First time here for breakfast and ordered the menudo. First off they only have one size option "Large" and it was served piping hot. Let me begin by saying the food is good. However, their ordering policy is nothing but greedy. One morning I went in to get a single breakfast taco before I went on a bike ride on the T. Trail and was told I had to order 3 tacos. This morning my wife and I wanted 2 tacos apiece but was told I had to order 3 or 6. Why can't I have what I need? Why must I pay for more than I need to get what I want? I have had it with them! It's a shame because I live close by and enjoy the convenience of walking over and getting breakfast on Sunday morning. read more

Another authentic Mexican restaurant that hits the mark! Helpful, attentive and polite staff. It's busy, but efficiently run. My fiancé work is around the corner and he tries all the local places. So he decided today was the day that he would bring me to try this place out. It's nestled in the North side of FTW, near the stockyards. These mom and pops authentic Mexican places are the best. This place was immaculate the service was quick and the food came out fresh. We both got the #13 Asado Rojo. This is park with red chili, served with a side of beans and rice. Chips and SPICY salsa. The corn tortillas are home made and were warm and tasty! This is one of my favorite places to go to. The food is great and the prices are fair too. The corn tortillas (and flour I think) are handmade which I love, and everything is authentic. My only small complaint is that it can get crowded sometimes, so I try to not to go during those hours when a lot of people go (mainly on the weekends during breakfast, lunch, and dinner rush hours). read more

Great breakfast. Ordered the patron breakfast with barbacoa. Homemade tortillas were delicious. The barbacoa was a little different than the traditional, they put something on it to give it more of a reddish color, but the taste was authentic. I did think the mashed potatoes with breakfast was a little odd. The food was flavorful none the less. They don't have fountain drinks and soda was served in a can. Went to pick up breakfast togo for a group when they first opened. The girls up front were great and very accommodating. They do have off menu breakfast specials which were amazing! I ended up also getting the small relleno taco/burrito and it was huge! All the flour tortillas were made by hand for all the tacos and burritos so it took a little bit, but it was well worth the wait. Great place for breakfast, will be trying lunch next. read more

The other day I was running errands during my lunch break and on my way back downtown I drove up on this place. I wanted something to take back to my desk and popped in to see what the menu looked like. It looked good from what I could tell. Thank goodness for pictures on the menu. At least 98% of the menu is written in Spanish. I read about 1% Spanish but that's cool. I ordred the #10 which is Quesadilla con hongos o pollo. Your choice is mushrooms or chicken. I love both but for my first visit I selected chicken. I'm smart. That chicken had this really tasty seasoning on it. I was very pleased with my selection. I ordered a side of guacomole with my lunch. You can order small for $2 or large fo $3. I ordered the small and it was a perfect portion. I can barely read the menu but I don't care. I love good food and I will definitely go back agan. read more

This is really good!! No beef enchiladas but that's not a deal breaker!! Hot sauce is hot....food comes out HOT!! Not the typical type where they put everything on a plate and throw it in the oven. Each item is hot where they put it together on your plate and serve it...10 minutes in food still nice and warm....I'll be back when I can!!! read more

I placed a simple order of 4 tacos to go with bacon potato and egg. The girl said they'd be 3$ a piece. I thought wow, they must be huge tacos, lol. She gave me my order and it was 17$ with 2 coffees. Got back to hotel and no bacon and the smallest most pathetic tacos I've ever seen. Barely any egg and ZERO BACON. Very dissatisfied! read more

Came here after my bachelorette party the morning after. I was specifically looking for a place with pozole. They have all sorts of authentic menu items. Not sure how the place works if you sit or wait to be seated but it was hoppin on a sunday morning so we sat down and were waited on fairly quickly. Had the Pozole (made with chicken not pork) and chicken enchiladas in red sauce. 1 Diet Coke (in a can). Total $23.00 (not including tip). Portions seemed rather small for the price, especially the $11.00 bowl of soup (Pozole). Waitstaff was friendly and (mostly) attentive. Pozole was satisfactory, nothing special. Chicken enchiladas in red sauce were the most bland, tasteless enchiladas I have ever eaten. I'm pretty sure the white meat chicken mush stuffing was canned chicken with no extra seasonings and the red sauce on them was unseasoned except for salt and the very bland chilies it was made from. The rice was nicely cooked but again, flavorless. The refried beans were satisfactory, nothing special. The 3 flour tortillas appeared to be made in house and were excellent. The salsa and chips appeared to be made in house and were excellent. The inside of the restaurant was clean, neat and bright. Very homey and authentic feeling. The menu was limited and primarily in Spanish (not a big deal, easy enough to figure out). No reason to ever go back. read more

First time coming to this place.....I really liked it. Everything we ate was delicious!!!!! I had to take a bite of everyone's food!!! So Good!! I ordered the Posole...it came with cabbage and onions on the side. I mixed it all in my posole and I added some lime. It was very good!!! It came in a huge bowl!!! My husband got a big steaming bowl of Menudo. That was very good also. He also said the chips and salsa were on point. My son got chicken enchiladas with red sauce. Those were delicious!!! Next time I go I'm going to order me plate of those. We all agreed we loved the place and we will most definitely return very soon!!!! read more

Read a review in Fort Worth Magazine and decided to give it a try. Simple place on the north side near the Stockyards, I usually judge a Mexican restaurant food by their enchiladas, I was not overly impressed, they used ground meat that was BLAND, and the red sauce they were topped with was the same way, no flavor. I poured the sauce that came with the chips over the enchiladas to get some kick and flavor in the meal. The sauce and chips were very good, service was also good. I doubt that I shall return, there are many more small Mexican restaurants in Ft. Worth that stand above El Patron. read more

A quick note on seating: the patio is lovely in theory, with the optional open windows and a breezy feel, but the chairs are not winning any comfort awards. Inside booths are the move. Also worth noting, this is Fort Worth, and once the thermometer hits triple digits, the patio conversation ends itself if the windows are open. Plan accordingly. Malai starts every table with steamed sticky rice and an eggplant dip, which is a charming little ritual and a genuinely good one. We also kicked things off with the Edamame, a heads up on the heat level there, and the Fried Imperial Rolls, filled with ground pork and shrimp and served with a sesame soy sauce. Fair warning: these do not photograph well and arrive at the table looking a little shy. Don't be fooled. They're flavorful, subtly spicy, and well worth ordering. For entrees, we tried the Basil Vegetable Fried Rice two ways, one vegan and one with chicken. The vegan version was a genuine surprise, with vegetables cooked just right and a flavor that didn't need the chicken to make its case. The mushrooms, however, had the texture of something you'd find in a hardware store. Chew at your own risk. The Green Curry, meanwhile, was a case of too much of a good thing. The curry was so heavy-handed it drowned everything underneath it. Sometimes restraint is a virtue. Save room for the Banana Pot de Crème. It's creamy, subtly sweet, and a graceful finish to the meal. The service at Malai is enthusiastic, and I do mean enthusiastic. The staff works as a team, all smiles, attentive, always nearby. Occasionally a little too nearby. More than once a plate nearly disappeared before we were done with it. It's a small complaint, and honestly a far better problem than the alternative. They're warm, cheerful, and clearly enjoy what they do, which goes a long way. Portions are generous, so order a few dishes and share the wealth. For a lunch stop between shops, Malai Kitchen punches well above its weight.

Only qualm about it was that the patty did give way about halfway through. Though, I find that's on par with a good messy burger. Overall, would come again, especially with the immense variety. The staff allowed the dog's water bowl to be placed on the table, and while the dog remained on a leash, several employees stopped to pet it before returning to refill drinks, deliver food, or check on guests. Fresh hand made tortillas! If you're looking for authentic Mexican food with amazing service and a welcoming atmosphere, El Patron is definitely worth visiting. The food was fresh, flavorful, and came out quickly. You can tell they put care into every dish. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home from the moment we walked in.
