I went to the Whippany, NJ location with my parents, brother-in-law and sister and we didn't have to wait for a seat because we came early. We were seated in the dining area that was spacious and bright. Kyle, our waiter was friendly and took care of us and was very attentive to our needs. We went to this highly anticipated restaurant with mixed feelings. Some of us were hoping to be wowed, while others expected to be let down. And we ended up having a mixed experience to go with those mixed feelings. We had a reservation but still needed to wait a few minutes for a table. The place was packed on a Saturday night for dinner (6pm-ish). We were seated in the back "yellow" room that looked like the inside of a barn. It wasn't as cute or as atmospheric as the front room with the fire place. We were a little disappointed. Also, they sat five of us at a table for four, so we were squeezed in pretty tight...and again, we had a reservation so they knew there would be five of us. Service was very slow. It took quite a few minutes for our server to come to our table and get our drink order. But the drinks were on point...we ordered some of the fancy cocktails and were honestly quite happily surprised at how good they were. I loved the French 75. The buttered pretzel was a great way to start the meal. All the food was amazing. We had some pizza, an order of pierogis, a pasta dish to name a few...all plates were pretty much licked clean. But it took forever to get drink refills (we had to chase the server down) and also to get the check. I wish the decor was less uneven between the rooms. I wish the back room was cuter and less loud. I hope the service continues to improve. And I really hope they do everything they can to keep that amazing bartender. I'll give them another try. read more

I used to go to the other two Chimney Rock Inns in Somerset County, so when this one popped up in Whippany, I was very excited! On the night we got food from CRI we decided to get take out, I wasn't in the mood for pizza so I opted for the Rock Chop Salad. The salad was good. I got the Southwestern dressing. It wasn't thick like I expected. My wife ordered chips and guac. Chips and the guac were average at best. It isn't quite what we'd get at a good Mexican restaurant (not that I expected something exceptional from a place known more for its pizza). Overall, it was good. Ok we heard this place opened in November and we really wanted to give it a try. I will say it gets very busy so make sure you make a reservation. Stopped in for a late lunch on Sunday. There was no wait and the hostess was friendly. The server took our drink order and apologized for the delay for my husband's drink since they had to get it from the back. The place is brand new and is clean and spacious. My husband had the brisket sandwich and fries. He said he sandwich was good the fried were really good. I ordered the mahi mahi tacos. They were good but not much Mahi Mahi. My wife and I visited the newest location for this group of restaurantes on Saturday, having been to both Bridgwater and Flemington area locations in the past. Walking in, was surprised how much the interior borrows it's looks from the Flemington spot, almost exact mirror view. On the right, more family style dining room and on the left is a bar with high tops and booths. We were escorted to the left which was fine by us. We ordered a pitcher of Miller Lite, served up cold. The wife got a mixed cocktail which she was was good. We started by splitting a garden salad and order of fried pickles, both were just great and served quickly. She got a Founder's pizza with added onion, a small which she literally brought 3/4 home with us. I ordered a large pizza with onions and peppers, did not disappoint. They really get their thin crust right here, it's the best in the area. The cost was in the pocket, pretty much what I'd expect. Got takeout from here - buffalo wings (GF) with guacamole and chips and a coke. The wings were large and juicy. The buffalo flavor didn't pack a punch like I expected it to. Guac to chip ratio was kind of funny actually. The guac portion was pretty small and there were a LOT of chips with it that ended up going to waste. Lastly, the coke was child size. All of it was $31. I like that they have a lot of GF options and I will probably try eating there and trying something else but so far it's just fine like the other reviewer said. read more

I love me some Chimney Rock Inn, and even better, there's now a location that's much closer. I was really hyped to try out the new location and finally made it there this past weekend. The layout and décor looked pretty standard for Chimney Rock, so it is very similar to its sister locations. My trio arrived a few minutes after opening on Saturday, so it wasn't quite busy yet. We were seated in a separate room off to the side, which would be great during busy times if you want to avoid a higher noise level from the main area. Our server seemed a bit disconnected but managed to get our orders through correctly. We started with drinks and tots, which was a great way to kick off our early lunch. They have so many gluten-free items on the menu, which is one of the top reasons I love the Chimney Rock Inn to begin with. I decided to try a new dish and went with the gnocchi rosa, which was quite good, if not slightly too al dente for some bites. The server seemed a bit off about the fact that I didn't clear my plate of gnocchi, even though I had a small salad and the tots for our app. Nothing ruins my meal more than feeling like I'm being critiqued for not finishing all my food. I stopped in during the soft opening and was genuinely impressed. The cedar-plank salmon was the star of the night--loaded with flavor, beautifully presented, and cooked perfectly. The space itself is gorgeous: brand-new, spotless, and surprisingly spacious, which made the whole experience feel elevated. The mac and cheese didn't quite hit the mark for me; it could use a bit more depth of flavor and creaminess. But the fried pickles more than made up for it. Not pictured, but absolutely unforgettable--perfectly sliced, super crunchy, and so addictive I ended up ordering a second round. Service-wise, our waitress was still learning the menu, but you could tell she cared. She was friendly, attentive, and genuinely trying to make our visit great. We've already returned since then, and the consistency keeps us coming back. With such a huge menu, there's always something new to try. I would say my first time here today was average at best. The lighting in the back room (booth seating) needs much improvement. You should not need to use the flashlight on your smartphone at 12:30pm to view the menu. Server was super friendly and helpful. The soft shell chicken tacos were underwhelming. Portion of chicken provided on the tacos was abysmal. One radish slice, and a light sprinkle of cojita cheese. Mostly all tortilla for the $13 tag. Flavors were lackluster, yet there was a good little kick in terms of heat. Nonetheless, I would not order those again. Wouldn't rush back, yet would not rule out trying again. Just not sure how much faith I have in that kitchen. Tacos done with attention and care, like many other dishes, can simply leave you wanting to return immediately. Chimney Rock is a decent spot for a cold beer and standard bar food. It's a brand new building - large with multiple rooms. Although the high ceilings don't help the noise level and I found the bar room to be a bit stark without some natural light. Food was fine. Wings, nachos and pretzels were all fine. Pizza was good but a bit too thin for my tastes. Good draft beer selection, served nice and cold. Service was very good but she was a visiting server from their other location. The busboys need some work. Three times behind us trays were dropped, scaring the daylights out of us. Good place to go with the kids or a couple of buddies. read more

Went on a rainy Wednesday night, so we were able to walk right in. Both my friend and I had the onion soup which was wonderful. They did the cheese brown and bubbly and the soup was seasoned just right! I ordered the fish and chips which was the best I ever had... three large pieces of fish which had a great crispy batter and delicious fish ! We went in December on a Thursday night and it left a lot to be desired. The wait was unnecessarily long despite checking in online, took about 20 minutes to order drinks, and then another 20 to get our appetizers. The food was ok, tried the pizza, pretzel, and hot chicken sandwich. I also found a tortilla chip on my pizza, which I found odd because no one in my party ordered anything with tortillas. Was it from another order? Probably. Was the dish on its way out or in? Who knows. After eating, it took 20 more minutes to get our check because our waitress vanished. The place was decorated nicely and was welcoming especially for Christmas time. However, for the amount of time waiting for a table, waiting for our food, waiting for a check, and fair quality food, I'm not too sure I'd return. Friendly staff but the food is just about average. I used to eat at the former Chimney Rock inn location at Berkeley Heights NJ. The food was better there. The pizza at the Berkeley Heights location was a thin crust and much tastier than at rt10. The pizza at the rt 10 location was thicker and soggy. I get it that this is a relatively new location for this restaurant. They need to duplicate the food and cooking they had at the Berkeley Heights location. read more

It wasn't bad, but not as good as Tommy's. From the outside, I expected a real country feel on the inside. Maybe even a fireplace on such a cold night, NOT. I found the ambiance to be boring. No decor. No personality, and that was just in the bar area. I never went into the dining room, but it looked tight and packed in like sardines. When you walk in they have a freezer in the entryway with frozen pizzas. Some of the pepperoni pizzas looked like they had freezer burn. Although we didn't order the pizzas, they did look like good old-fashioned "bar" pies. We had Caesar salads over-dressed, with too much dressing. The combo platter had good ribs, and barely 2 pieces of brisket, and my brisket was good, not overly smoked, but not enough food. Maybe my daughter's chicken pot pie was the best. Again, no real complaints with the food, just not blown away, and the ambiance is really a detriment to this space. Sitting in the bar area at a table, I had these spotlights on me, like outdoor lights on the corners of the bar pointed at us. I was just uncomfortable sitting there. Just ok. Waited to visit a second time to write a review. Service was good. During the second visit, we waited several minutes for the host to greet us even though the place was empty. Service. Slow to get drinks. Drinks: Ordered the winter margarita from the drink specials menu. It was tasty but for 12.00 we literally had 3 ounces of a drink and the rest was ice. Food: Rock burger was ok. Guacamole and chips below average. Tasted like mass-produced guacamole. The ribs were not good at all. Tough. Not falling off the bone. Chicken fajita appetizer was gross. A bad blend of rubbery chicken (dark and white meat) and vegetables that were greasy. The pirogies were ok. DO NOT order the artisan pizza. It's terrible. I've had better frozen pizza than that pizza. It is like a mass produced frozen cracker dough, with WAY too much sauce and hardly any cheese. No spices. No salt. No basil. No flavor. Not at all like the description on the menu. I hope they fix the kinks. I think maybe the Polar Express people crushed them this holiday season and they will have time to tweak the establishment. Would leave no stars if I could. First off, everything took forever. And my god, the silverware is the cheapest stamped metal stuff there is, with sharp edges that hurt to use. Now the food. Let's start at drinks. I ordered an espresso martini. The person making it has clearly never made espresso. It was burnt, acidic, and downright undrinkable. My wife ordered a drink as well that had barely any taste. Both drinks tasted and felt like they had no alcohol, genuinely. Then the food. I got the "blackened mahi mahi with brussel sprouts and cilantro lime rice". The small, bland portion of fish that came out was barely seasoned at all, and certainly not close to blackened. The rice was plain white rice that seemed to have been microwaved. The brussel sprouts were cut into fourths and somehow burnt on the outside, and essentially raw inside. My wife ordered a pasta dish and git the complete wrong thing, but it had been so long she was starving and simply ate it. Had we not been out in a group for an event, would have asked for a manager and said everything was wrong and we would be leaving. Very disappointing for a new restaurant Service was good! Fork was no wider than my index finger. Spoon was so shallow it took for every to consume the soup! The charged $1.99 for extra tomato sauce for the $19.99 home-made gravy dish. Meatball and garlic knots were hard....must have been precooked and reheated! We were shocked at the small portion of salmon.. it was cooked on a Cedar plank and both were charred equally.. salmon was dry! Smoked barbecue platter was $27.99 with no soup nor salad..[thats exspensive] Very stingy on the frys as you can see.. Barbecue sauce on the side was in a squeeze bottle that was ice cold.. Ribs had a aftertaste!! They too were reheated ribs, not fresh.. Bathroom had no paper towels, just air dryer. I had to go get toilet paper to wipe my face from the barbecue sauce and blow my nose... Then, when I went to throw out the toilet paper, I noticed there was no garbage can... So I had to go back to the bathroom stall to throw the paper in the toilet... Went here on a Saturday afternoon and got a buffalo chicken pizza while my wife got "supreme" nachos. Had two waiters with one supposed to be training the other. However I couldn't tell who was training who, as they both seemed extremely inexperienced. Our waiters went by our table over a dozen times and never grabbed our leftover plates. Either did the busboys. My pizza was abysmal. The crust was basically a cracker and couldn't support the toppings. The taste reminded me of a Chuck E Cheese pizza. I am convinced the pizza is premade and heated up when ordered. You can tell because when you walk in, there is a freezer filled with the same exact pizzas I was served. As for the nachos, I wouldn't call burnt Tostitos and insipid cheese "supreme". I would assume supreme nachos would come with jalapeños, onions, olives etc. It only had a few diced tomatoes. You have to pay extra for sour cream and guacamole which are synonymous with nachos. The customers behind us were also complaining about food and service the entire time. I do truly think this place has potential as it has a great atmosphere. I am only writing this review as this place is packed and becoming pretty popular. I loved the atmosphere! Very cozy. The system wasn't working and so it was a little bit slow and orders were going to the wrong table. It's no one's fault that the system wasn't functioning. We did have to ask for things multiple times. I got a plain burger with nothing on it, which was good but the bun could have been better. Service only came once to take order and drinks never returned to check on patrons needs, different servers gave us our food loudly dropping plates on the table as if annoyed they had a job to do !! There was what appeared to be a floor manager walking around observing but never spoke to customers to ask about there experience, absolutely no people skills. If you're looking to hang out at the bar and grab a bar pie then you might like going to this place if you're looking for a family dinner environment to sit down and actually enjoy different types of foods I would not recommend going there. The freezer by the front door full of premade pizza should tell you enough !! Actually hade high hopes for this place to open and have something new in our area to enjoy .
