Holy Chiltepes. This is a diamond among diamonds for sure. I say this because this corridor of South O is culturally rich and full of diamond studded eating options. Whether you're looking for a street taco, a Mexican sweets bakery or ice cream shop, all of it can be found here. While Mexican street cuisine rules most of South O, it's fun to find some other types of Latin/Hispanic fare. I have tried Salvadorian and Ecuadoran food here in this area, and now most recently Guatemalan. I have never traveled to Guatemala, but I do know what the basics of their cuisine is (thanks travel channel, youtube food, and food network). I was excited to not only try something new, but explore and expand on my taste buds. For my first taste of Guatemalan cuisine, we decided to order the $30 platter sampler that feeds 2 (but realistically up to 4 ppl if you're eating light). It included thick tortillas; hand tossed and pressed, then steamed/baked by an elderly woman in the back. The platter itself had sweet cooking bananas, salad mix, and marinated and grilled pork, chicken, and beef. There were two little sausages packed with flavor and deliciously grilled garlic shrimp. The black bean/dirty rice combo had a fantastic texture and flavor. Each item has it's own flavor profile and texture, and it made the whole experience that much more wonderful. The wait for the food was about 35 mins but it was worth every min to savor the steaming hot finished product. Not a stop to miss in South Omaha. Made to order and fresh ingredients will keep customers coming back.

Shuco Gigante

Today was the first time trying authentic food from Guatemala and I was not disappointed! Had the huco Gigante and it was one of the best sandwiches I have ever had if you'd consider it a sandwich. Also the service was fast and very friendly!

My husband (being from Guatemala himself!) has been dying to try this place out. Three different attempts have all failed him so far, even though he went within the posted business hours on the door. Today was his lucky day, though! We were in South Omaha and hungry, so he suggested we give Chiltepes a try. We were seated right when we walked in the door. It is a smaller place, but there appears to be additional seating upstairs. The kitchen is open - so you can see most of the fun taking place right before your eyes. The waitress brought out of chips and salsa (I loved the red salsa - didn't try the green) and took our drink orders. A nice variety of both hot and cold drinks, along with your standard glass-bottle Hispanic options. I went with an atol de elote and a Coca Cola. Husband chose coffee. We ordered right away, and only minutes later my food was brought out. I ordered the breakfast plate. Two eggs, refried black beans, fried plantains, cheese, and bacon. Omg. Flavor explosion. It was delicious. I don't even care for fried plantains, but these were AWESOME. The beans, the bacon, the eggs, and especially the cheese... it was all better than I ever expected. Will totally order the same thing in the future. My husband ordered the carne asada plate, but due to a series of phone calls - he ended up getting his to go. It was a huge portion, though, and what he did eat he said it was delicious. We will for sure be back. The waitress was attentive and quick. The checkout process was easy. I would for sure call ahead, though, just to make sure they are open. I hope this place sticks around! Omaha has next to no options for authentic Guatemalan cuisine.

Bandeja Típica. Usually for 2 people but they made this one for one person.

Great food! Very friendly staff. They had a sample plater for two that looked amazing, but I was there alone. They were more than willing to make it for one person instead. It was delicious! Grilled beef (asada), grilled chicken (pollo), and marinated pork chop (adobado). Served with rice, beans, shrimp, onion, and plantains. Very affordable too.

First floor of the restaurant. Great vibe with authentic artwork on the walls. You can order to go or dine in.

South Omaha

Just had an early lunch there. Had eaten there once before many years ago, it was great then. Today…read morenot so much. Had the Salvadoran tamales. I have had Salvadoran tamales in more than a few places and states. I just love them.Todays were the worst I have had. The masa was under cooked and one was only a quarter filled with chicken. Must have been the last one made in that batch. Ordered a margarita with no luck, tried for a beer next. was told the girl that handles alcohol just left. Server said she had a hard time serving alcohol. How hard is it to "Pop a top".

Another Salvadorian place???…read more I feel like my access to Salva-poo-poo (aka pupusas) are almost as numerous as Omaha potholes! Out of all the Salvadorian places, I would say this place has the largest menu coupled with the highest prices (you got to pay the over achieving menu maker somehow!!) Unfortunately you can't get dollar poo-poo here... BUT you can compliment your poo with some plantains and Salva crema! I have a Salva friend who educated me on the wonders of eating plantains, queso blanco, beans and crema like they do it back in El Salvador. This place had just that - score!! It's definitely not for everyone because I remember the salty/sweet/soccer/salva tastes that threw my mouth into a slight state of confusion; yet still induced some Salvadorian saliva dripping down my chin. (that's a good thing) We had the garlic fish dish (only get this if you like whole fried fish) and there was so much garlic, I had to use the fish bones to clean my teeth out. I love garlic more than my nonexistent children, but being on Team Edward, I need to keep the g-lic on the DL mmmkrrr! The poo-poos (which is a MUST at a Salva place) were just meh. Not bad by any means, but just... meh-diocre. I think I would rather go to the poo-poo palace on 17th and Vinton for some dollar-make-my-belly-holla cheap poos. I guess if you are in the area and you want bigger menu (size queens...) including all your mexi classics, check this place out. But ONLY if you order at least one p-poo!!!

I am always a little nervous about "small plates" - like, how small are we talking about? I feel…read morethe same way about sushi. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit this but surely I am not the only one, right? My husband and I came here for lunch. We ordered 3 items total and that was pretty much exactly the right amount of food. We got the chicken skewers, the chicken empanadas, and the fish ceviche. Everything was well-prepared and tasty. I always love sauces and those were good too. We sat outside, which was a little noisy due to streetcar construction, but it was a nice day. Pleasant music was playing. Dining room looked lovely and welcoming as well. Service was good. I liked it all - and I really loved the Topo Chico limeade. I didn't see it on the menu so you might have to ask for it. You should!

I should have taken pictures, because the food at Cumbia was beautiful to look at, but it was even…read morebetter to eat, hence the lack of pictures. My wife and I went here recently for a date night, and we really enjoyed everything. The menu is tapas, so we ordered a bunch of different food and shared, with the exception of one dish I would order everything else again in a heartbeat. We started out with a few drinks, which were very tasty, then ordered the house guacamole with plantain chips, the carnitas bravas, grilled chicken skewers, chicken and beef empanadas, shrimp cocktail, and Peruvian ceviche. All were excellent with the exception of the ceviche, there was nothing wrong with it, just compared to everything else it was fairly bland. The plantain chips and guacamole were so good together, way better than tortilla chips. If I had to pick a favorite I'd say the carnitas bravas, perfectly seasoned and just the right amount of crispy. Service was fine, the waiter took care of our needs and let us enjoy each other's company, I appreciate that. I'd say 4.5 stars overall, but closer to 5, very impressed.
