These are the best crabs I've eaten in at least three years. Sadly, I haven't had crabs in the last three years, and likely longer. But, even had I had crabs monthly for the last 36, I'm pretty sure the crabs from Chic's would rank in the top of the class. By the time I arrived at 7:30, my friend had already ordered a dozen crabs. They were steaming on the tray and I dug right in. They were nicely sized. A couple of them were near jumbo size; none of them didn't look at least healthy. The meat was moist and tasty, and the spices just hot enough to send a strong message. Jill's husband arrived and we ate our way through two dozen hard shell, Maryland-style crabs. Jill ate a dozen herself; Brad treated himself to a fried soft-shell crab sandwich. Were I not gluten intolerant, I would have scarfed up on some of it; it looked delicious. Brad kept trying to sell me on trying a salad or soup or something other than crabs. But, as I told him, with good crabs, nothing is needed and we seek to focus on the crab and the quest for meat. While the dining room was boisterous when I arrived (there was a table of twenty enjoying some sort of celebration), the sound was lost on me; I was enamored with the crabs and digging my way through the meat, enjoying the juice and the rind. Service was attentive by young Nicole. It was her first night serving as a waitress; she kept my soda full and the metal bucket, for scraps, empty In the mood for crabs and you're in western Maryland, this is certainly your place. read more

Driving through Maryland on a recent Boston-to-Atlanta trip, the gf wants what else, crabs. I'm thinking she means Red Lobster or something, but she says since we're in Maryland, we should have crabs from a local spot. She puts something into her GeniusPhone, and it directs us to some place that was closed, next up was this place. We head over, pull up and notice there are no other cars in the lot. A sign we wonder? We enter and a nice lady greets us. She tells us her name is Heidi. It's a fresh seafood shop in th front, and We look at the menu, and there are PLENTY of crab options. We order and wait. After what seemed like 6 months, food comes. First thing I noticed was that my flounder entree was previously frozen. It was Flounder Imperial. Frozen dish, with fresh, HOMEMADE crabmeat imperial. The crabmeat imperial was HEAVENLY! I mean, like REALLY good. I'd go back JUST for this- the homeade crabmeat imperial. Oh,goodness! The gf ordered crab legs, a fried crabcake (get the NOT FRIED option if you try one), and she got plenty for the price. NOW- the sides. Oh boy. Baked potatoes were microwaved. I stayed with the chips she had the fries. Both meals were tasty and portion size was good. Will be back for sure. I came for the Maryland steamed crabs and I was not disappointed. I got the smalls and the price was reasonable and the seasoning was just right. My husband got the chicken tenders and they were also very good. It is not a fancy seafood place. It is more a crab shack that also serves seafood dinners. There is a giant crab on the roof for a reason. Because the place is full of good seafood.

We ate at Chic's this past Friday, and I must say I was very impressed! I got the fried oysters, and they were HUGE - they were in a light cornmeal batter and cooked to perfection. One aspect of a seafood place in Maryland in particular is the use of local product, and those were definitely Chesapeake oysters. Along with the oysters I had a double order of the onion rings, as you are allowed to order two sides. Many seafood places try to force coleslaw (which I hate), and I was actually very happy Chic's doesn't do that - the onion rings were also impressive and very nicely prepared. For dessert I had the lemon creme cake, which was in reality more of torte than a cake, but it was delicious - the nice lemony twang was light and refreshing, and a good conclusion to a good meal. As far as ambience, the place is cozy, although at first you might have a little challenge finding the entrance - go into the door at the right. Once inside, a friendly counter person will direct you to the dining room, which is also entered from the right. Overall, a great culinary experience, and next visit I have to try the shrimp, which my wife had and were also HUGE! read more

I almost feel bad writing this review but this place was terrible enough to deserve every word. Some friends wanted to try it out so we stopped by Saturday evening. 7pm Saturday and 4 cars in the parking lot should've been a hint, well it was a hint, but we ignored it. Sat down at a sticky table that was about 6" too high for anyone other than a tree. That was the second hint, we still didn't get it and chose to proceed. This place is advertised as a crab shack, but it was dead silent inside, no music, no tv, just a few octogenarians rambling on about the holy war when Jesus returns. Wish I was kidding, I had to listen to that nonsense for over an hour. Apparently them not being able to hear translates into everyone else not being able to hear so the entire restaurant got a bible lesson at 120 decibels. Anyway all of those hints to leave went on by and we ordered our food. One should note that the online menu is probably 15 years old and the prices are way off. I got the jumbo fried shrimp, 5 of them, for like $20. I was expecting fresh, jumbo shrimp for that price but I got what was basically 5 Sea Pak shrimp that someone tried to cremate in the fryer. The hush puppies were good, potato wedges were decent, shrimp were barely edible. Fiancée got the crab cakes, these are the most awful crab cakes I've ever encountered. She had one bite and tapped out, they were that bad. Everyone at the table tried them, everyone had the same opinion. They had some weird seasoning combined with a metallic taste, completely inedible. We were fortunate enough to wash them down with Hagerstown's finest unfiltered tap water, almost as metallic as the crab cakes. Friends ordered NY strips that were super fatty, over cooked lobster tail and clams that were just alright. If you are three centuries old, lack taste buds and love to push your religion on the entire restaurant, this place is for you. If not, you'll leave hungry like we did with a lot less money in your wallet. The seafood options in Hagerstown suck at best but this place is by far the worst. The least they could do is play some music or liven up the place. The atmosphere combined with the food and the crowd (or lack there of) just sucks the soul right out of you. read more

Fist time and last. For the Maryland crab soup which had no crab meat. The crab imperial, one of the most expensive dishes on the menu, it was salty soupy and watery. ive been coming here for years , its slowly been getting worse and worse , i went in for a dozen hard crabs I was told they had NO Large over the phone only mediums , i show up and she said "he picked through and pulled large's from the mediums" , the mediums price jumped to $75 for a dozen this year , for MEDIUMS , i figured they better be good , i elected not to pay more than $75 for the "Large" that moments ago were mediums as soon as i picked the bag up i knew this wasnt good , very lite, keep in mind they claim ALL of their crabs are #1's so thats why they sell by size , having grown up on the shore i know #1's are suppose to be heavy/full , a dozen in a bag that is lite are not #1's ,lite medium crabs do not cost $75 a dozen , i took them anyway my mistake i get home and there is no seasoning on them ,not only no seasoning were on them i could not taste and seasoning or vinegar in the meat , these were the most bland crabs ive ever eaten , over the last few years its been hit or miss , this miss has cost a customer of at least 15 years , for $75 this was inexcusable read more

We live on the coast. Seafood is available dockside and we have a short ride to Calabash for its style of seafood. We moved from outside of Hagerstown and are returning next week for a visit. Where will we go for our first meal? Chics. We agree with some earlier posts. This is a fish market and a seafood shack style restaurant. If you want fresh seafood, this is the place to go. If you want a bushel of crabs, this is also the place to go. We wish Chic's would move to the coast with us. read more

I am a lifelong Marylander and I know crabs. I got steamed crabs from here last summer (2012) and they were cooked so poorly that you couldn't even pull meat out because it had turned to soggy white mush. It made me cry. Their homemade seafood seasoning is not great either. read more

We went to Chic's because we happened to be in Hagerstown and hungry. We looked up Seafood in Hagerstown on the smart phone and there was Chic's. Don't be put off by the neighborhood it is a great place. The inside is clean and the staff was great. Our waitress did a great job making sure we had what we needed. Try the cream of crab soup, it was thick, creamy and had the most crab meat I have ever seen in cream of crab soup. Everything else was also great, oysters on the half shell, stuffed flounder, snow crab legs, cole slaw, fries, baked potato al done right and the bill was just $69. Cannot beat it. read more

The soup and the entree I tried (crab imperial) were ok, but extremely over-rich and heavy (I enjoy a good heavy seafood chowder, and crab dishes... but this was a bit overbearing). I have generally received great crabs from here in the past. We ordered a bushel of #1s for Fathers day for 250, twice the price of #2s and what I received was a bushel of mixed 1s and 2s around 5-1/4, which is what all number 2s are starting July 1st. My daughter brought a half bushel of crabs for 115.00. We have brought crabs from this establishment several times before and have been totally satisfied with the results of purchasing bushels and half bushels!!! Until today today unknown to us our half bushel crabs were measured in some sort of container and whatever was in this container was what we received as a half of a bushel. Are you with me so far... we received eighteen crabs and didn't discover it until the four participants eating the crabs at home, were done in about 15 minutes...We discovered we were dupe ! When my daughter called and spoke with the owner ( he acknowledged what his clerks had done in giving us 18 crabs as a half bushel and hung up on her when she argued a half of bushel isn't 18 crabs but three or four dozen)the manager tried to explain their new measurements and the clerk tried to convince my daughter that because she chose to purchase the larger crabs meant she got the container purchase because of the size! Confused?! so were we ! A dozen of crabs will always equal 12 crabs no matter the size two dozen is 24 crabs no matter the size a half bushel should of been 3 to 4 dozen no matter the size instead we got 18 crabs. Not even two dozen!!!!! Why would we pay More to receive less?! THIS ESTABLISHMENT STEALS, LIES AND IS VERY DISHONEST PLEASE DONT SUPPORT THIEVES !!!! Horrible management/staff. Picked up take-out and discovered my car was broken down when I tried to leave. Since the food was made fresh and I had nowhere to go until the tow truck arrived (45-minute​ estimate​), I tried to eat it inside while waiting only to be to turned away because​ "the food costs more if you dine-in". Also, our therapy dog was allowed in before buying the take-out but once we tried to re-enter I was told to take her away. My family and I stopped here today around 1:00 pm. We were the only ones in the restaurant. We have been here numerous times in the past, but nothing to recent. We always get the cream of crab soup and a fish sandwich. The soup which came out first (as we asked) looked delicious as normal. but when we took a spoonful it was barely warm. So I had to go ring the door bell so that our waitress came out from the back of the kitchen. We asked for the soups to be reheated. She came out a few minutes later and he soup was definitely warmer but not hot at all. The taste of the soup would have been a 10 but it was way to salty. This was a first. Our fish sandwiches came out a few minutes later. The fish was good but seems if the fish portion was cut in half since last time. I will give Chic's another shot, but if it is the same as this time then I think i will have to cross them off my list. By no means do i want to bad mouth this establishment, i just want them to realize our opinion, and hope they can correct it. read more
