The quality is unparalleled, the flavors fresh/authentic, and there's enough variety that I probably eat here 2-3 times a month without ever getting bored. Every dish was solid. You can tell they have paid attention to detail in the food and is made with love and care. We had the posole, tampiquena, chili verde and guacamole and chips. All amazing. I have over stuffed myself. The veggies, fresh, and the meat tender and tasty. Loved that the pork chunks in the chili verde were bite sized and not big dry hunks that you tend to find in a lot of other places. A great neighborhood spot with a true charm and mom and pop feel. Chico's is amazing! Felt compelled to write a review tonight after they catered my staff retreat lunch today. The food was such a hit. Multiple people throughout the day commented on how good it was. Some of our staff are from out of town (NY) and said they were sad they didn't live close to such delicious Mexican food. I let all staff pick whatever they wanted and they all chose diverse items yet everything was good (coctel de camaron, veggie burritos, cocido, sopes, ALL OF IT WAS AMAZING). Not to mention that Alberto made it so easy to place the order. He delivered the food to the retreat space and organized so well that it was super easy to make sure everyone got exactly what they had ordered. I am amazed at the amount of the people from San Francisco who insist on comparing Mexican cuisine up there to that found in Los Angeles. And while there is no doubt whatsoever that San Francisco has some of the greatest, world-class cuisine items AND is known as origination point of the "mission-style" burrito, the fact of the matter is this: Los Angeles has a larger, more diverse Latino population. Because of its closer locality to the border, this also means that epicureal trends, techniques and styles happen and are perfected here first, before eventually reaching San Francisco. Oh, and contrary to popular local San Francisco belief, the burrito was not invented in there. But I digress... Chico's is a small, humble restaurant tucked away in Highland Park. Chico's serves fresh-prepared, near home-cooked, south-of the-border cuisine that easily stands above the well-saturated Highland Park restaurant scene, as well as being comparable with some of LA's more notable eateries. It's really no secret why: the food is damn good. The usual patrons of Chico's can be described in one single word: everyone. From trust fund-hipsters to blue-collar janitors, there is no one single, specific, so-called demographic. The prices are inexpensive, the food is fresh and prepared per order (and no, they don't use lard -just ask if you're concerned), and are more than willing to make reasonable adjustments to an order. What makes this particular family owned and run restaurant so successful is that even in their modest size, they take the time to prepare each order with the care to bring an order above "run-of-the-mill," to "could-have-been-prepared-in-your-own kitchen-by-your-mom" (assuming your mom cooks superb Mexican grub in her kitchen). Dining in is sort of a crap-shoot. Some days you can walk in, and there's not a soul outside of the kitchen/counter area, while other days, expect a bit of a wait for a table -usually on the weekends. A good (not to mention popular) way of getting around this is to phone ahead with your order for either take-out (sorry kids, they don't do deliveries), or dine-in. Many people have made the suggestion that they should consider expanding; perhaps opening at a new location or even a second location. But as the saying goes: if it's not broken, don't fix it. There is no reason for them to move to a new location or franchise out. One small kitchen is all that's needed to prepare some of the best food in the Highland Park/Cypress Park area. read more

On my way to an LA Conservancy Walking Tour of Highland Park, a bright, colorful yellow building caught my eye and considering it was on a street running parallel to the one I was driving on, I probably shouldn't have been taking a peek. I did make a mental note; however, that it was a Mexican restaurant and that maybe, I'd check it out after the tour. Lo and behold, our tour ended right across the street and I knew it was fate. Before I walked across joined by others from the tour, I did notice the remnants of an old sign with the words "Cafe" on it, attached to the same pole as Chico's Restaurant sign. It seemed so somber in color and out of place sitting over a building that looked as if a rainbow exploded over it; yet, keeping that old sign seemed almost as an homage to what was past was actually pretty cool. Entering the restaurant, with a blue sombrero touting "Respect Your Hood" painted above the door, I went into a dining area with red and green striped booths and with walls showcasing painted murals of Mexican life. It's not a very big space, but I really liked the vibe and soon a very friendly waitress came our way with menus. Even the menus were a little different than what I've seen before. These weren't pages filled with computer fonts neatly typed. Instead, the menu pages contained illustrated images and even the text, except for one section, looked like they were drawn with a feeling of liveliness. From the outside to the inside to the menu, Chico's was definitely a visual experience. Before even placing our orders, we were served the proverbial chips and salsa, but that salsa was really good. The flavors were as fresh as the ingredients were vibrantly colorful. When it came to ordering a drink, I skipped over the soft drinks and opted for a strawberry agua fresca. I have to say that while I like ague frescas, I've had them in the past where they were too sweet, too sugary, but the one I had a Chico's was just right and very refreshing. While others in the group went for the tacos and burritos on the menu, my taste buds had a hankering for the pork chile verde and that's exactly what I got. My taste buds picked a winner. The tomatillos in the chili verde sauce added a nice tangy-grassiness while the chilies added a little kick to the fork-tender pork, which made not only for happy taste buds, but also for a happy me. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal at Chico's, but more than just good food, Chico's is definitely a visual feast. Coming from a graphic design background, I can't help but appreciate the fun colors and the quirkiness of this restaurant space. I bet even in the gloomiest of days with pouring rain, Chico's bright yellow facade would still be a beacon that hungry customers can find their way to and with the good food waiting inside, who could blame them? Well wow then. My first time here. Stopped to pick up some caldo for my house full of sick people. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. The food was tasty! I got myself soup and an appetizer to share. After eating part of the appetizer I did not have room for soup. When we did not receive that confirmation, we called the place and we're told that our order went to another company. Excellent customer service. Decent prices. Plain food. I ordered a chicken burrito. The beans were a tad dry. The rest was okay. The sauce and chips we ordered as appetizers, the chips were old chips mixed with older chips, the salsa was bland and a waste of a dollar. We asked the waitress to replace the chips and they only taste slightly better. Do not order the chips. However, what saved the burrito was the hot sauce. It was actually good sauce! The burrito needed sauce because it came with no sauce, and other places make burritos with sauce. But I recommend ordering their red sauce with your burrito. My mother ordered their huevos rancheros & the eggs with chorizo was better than Denny's and other restaurants I've been to because they weren't dry or burnt. read more

DAMN GOOD AL PASTOR BURRITO. I just had to get the burrito after seeing a review raving about it here on Yelp and I am so glad I did! The burrito is huge, packed with plenty of tendor al pastor meat, beans, some type of god-sent chilli/meat sauce, veges , and rice. I love that there's more meat than rice, NOMS. It comes with a side of fresh salsa and chips. I also highly recommend the seafood ceviche, high quality and generous in portions. The cafe de olla here is amazing. $2 for unlimited refills for sit-in and $2.35 for a huge cup to-go. You can get it hot or iced. The venue and service is great.
