Wife and I tried Chicano's based on Yelp reviews, and were not disappointed - this probably is (as their award posters in the windows proclaim) the best Mexican food in Scranton. Although it looks like a dove on the outside... Well, that look continues to the inside, too, BUT it's clean, well-maintained, and the food is very nice, fresh, flavorful, and large portions. The service was adequate - the gentleman serving everyone was not "friendly" but nor was he rude - he just never smiled, never said anything not absolutely required... Didn't really work for his tip. What a gem ! Stumbled upon this place on the way home from Ithaca craving solid Mexican food - which I'm pretty picky. Service was quick and friendly. Food was clean, flavorful, and delicious ! Chicano's is a hidden gem located off Cedar Ave in South Scranton. This restaurant offers great, authentic Mexican cuisine at an affordable price. I have gone here twice, and both experiences have been outstanding. The service is top notch, and you can expect to be in and out within 30-45 minutes depending on how busy they are. Amazing food and authentic to the core . I love the house dip they give you when you first get there , it's like a chipotle mayo of some kind . The Chile rellenos were delicious . Chicano's is AUTHENTIC Mexican food cooked with passion. Genuinely warm staff. Very reasonable prices. Best Mexican I've ever tasted. Generous portions. Accommodate groups (at 2 tables). Wonderful home-style atmosphere. I cannot speak highly enough or recommend Chicano's higher. It's what restaurant dining probably was, 50 or 100 years ago... home-cooked and personal, all fresh ingredients, etc. I only wish Washington DC (where I live) were closer to Scranton. I'd eat there 3 times / week. My ski plans this season will include Sno & Elk Mountain, just so I can eat here a couple times. read more

I am from NYC and I have tried Garibald's and lots of other Mexican restaurants around. After eating at and seeing the reviews from Mexican places, I cannot help but give Chicano's five perfect stars. Their food is real traditional Mexican, no sour cream and crappy cheese. Everything...everything is fresh. I have been going there multiple times a month and have never been disappointed. It is family owned and you can taste with each bite that they put their hearts into their cooking. The carnitas tacos are excellent. The refried beans are perfect. Their guacamole is so fresh and they are so welcoming and friendly. I would bring any friends of mine from NYC and challenge them to find better Mexican there. Recently there have been a chain of places called Mole which have a opened up with a similar style of authentic Mexican cooking but anything I missed from Mole was replaced with even better dishes at Chicano's. read more

Authentic, that is the one word summation of this little place. Everyone here is nice and accommodating, largely due to the fact that this place is basically in someone's house. The family run restaurant sticks to fresh ingredients and flavor stuffed dishes. The meal begins with chips and a deep red sauce that is full of heat and spice. I tried a milkshake after a recommendation made by my friend. I had the banana and she had the strawberry, both tasted amazing and different. I finished my own in a matter of a few minutes. I had a burrito filled with steak and a variety of onions, peppers, and cheese. I am so used to the Americanized Mexican food that everything seemed some overwhelming. It was good I was just too much much of a pansy to get past the spice. All in all, these people are doing it right. They know how and have known for years which is obvious when you see the range of age in the kitchen. Its a hole in the wall that that deserves a definite visit. read more

Awesome little hole in the wall. Great food. Ordered empanadas, a taco, and the enchilada dinner with chile verde. Food was prepared quickly and empanadas can out super hot and crispy. The carnitas on the taco was excellent, very well seasoned. And the verde sauce was really good too. Everything was very fresh and also inexpensive. Everything that I ordered came to about $10. Tasted like canned sauce on the enchiladas and the "salsa" was very hot and also tasted like it was from a bottle. Chips were stale.

The tortilla soup was a generous portion and very tasty. I also ordered the vegetarian burrito and it was nice and fresh. My husband had the enchiladas and they were good.
