I want to add emphasis: Chicano's is one of Scranton's must-visit restaurants. Scranton's 21st-century food "scene" starts with this humble restaurant in South Side which opened when I was in elementary school. I love Chicano's. Everybody loves Chicano's. Random visitors on other platforms toss around derogatory comments about "authenticity" without having much of an idea of how important this restaurant has been to the area, or how sad Mexican cuisine actually is in most Rust Belt cities. Sorry, there are no birria tacos. Before Chicano's opened, the only Mexican food in the area was probably Taco Bandido down on Mulberry Street. Chicano's introduced Mexican food to the area. I wrote my supplemental college admissions essay for Villanova about experiences I had at Chicanos (yes, I riffed on the food being too spicy for me). I spent months living in Utah and couldn't find any humble Mexican restaurants like Chicano's. I spent a month living in (northern) Arizona and couldn't find any humble Mexican restaurants like Chicano's. I've lived in New York City for over a year and I have no idea how far I'd have to travel to find a similar Mexican restaurant that isn't reliant on serving mediocre burritos for $20 and pushing margaritas. Okay, when I lived in Chicago there were quite a few suitable replacements in Pilsen. Scranton is now a place where if you want takeout for lunch you can call multiple restaurants just to have them not pick up the phone, turn out to have changed their hours last minute, or take double the stated time to make mediocre food. Chicano's is probably the most reliable and quick carryout operation in the city and I'd trust them to prepare my last meal. read more

Would love to emphasize. Food is PHENOMENAL and is always big portions for a surprisingly good price. You literally can't ask for more. Everything I said before still reigns true- the service is quick (I just got my food in about 10 minutes) and the workers are polite and very accommodating. Also, the homemade chips as well as the horchata are both very tasty- the horchata in particular might be one of my favorite drinks ever. This is an excellent Mexican restaurant. Food feels very authentic. I kind of default to the chicken fajita. Portions are large and will be enough for more than one meal. It seems like a small mom and pop shop which makes me want to support them even more. We have done takeout and our food has always been ready on time. It's our go to Mexican in the area. read more

Definitely seems like a local joint. I was staying in downtown & this seemed to be the closest Mexican restaurant that was walkable. At first it felt like walking in someone's house. Service was good & fast. Maybe cause at that time I was the only customer. Food was just average. It definitely could've tasted better. I ordered the enchiladas with mole sauce. Looks like a house from the outside & was likely converted into a restaurant. Wasn't very busy inside on a Sunday afternoon (weird time in-between lunch & dinner) but can tell they do mostly a lot of to-go pick up orders. Food was excellent, definitely authentic Mexican home made everything from the chips & soft tortillas to everything inbetween. Prices are also excellent! Found it in a yelp search when another Mexican place was closed on sunday's but parking here was more convenient anyway. Visiting the area for a college tour and so happy we found this place would definitely come again if we're in the area! read more

After a disastrous dining experience at Don Pancho Villa and an unexpected extra night stay I decided to try out this place. Well happy to say was not disappointed. Coming from Jackson Heights, Queens were Spanish is king I certainly know about authentic Mexican food. I ordered the plate of Carnitas and they came out PERFECT! Nice and moist just how I like them. Together with the Aqua de Jamaica, which tasted much better then when I make it at home :( my meal was perfect. Now the only thing bad and it was mentioned in another review is that this place serves no sour cream. I run into this issue once in a while at an Mexican restaurant and I just don't understand it... gringos like sour cream just that simple... Also the chips while ok could be better a bit bland not much flavor. The salca was nice and picante; no issues there... On my next trip to Scranton would certainly eat here again... :) read more

I would say this place has pretty decent Mexican food for Scranton, but it is by no means up to par with what you get in CA. Just overall, our food was bland and lacked flavor. We really don't have any REAL AUTHENTIC Mexican restaurants in this area, so I feel like this is the best we're going to get. Yes it was a lot of food, tasted decent, satisfied my Mexican food craving, but I was not at all impressed. I'm from CA and there are hundreds of Mexican food restaurants, food trucks, and taquerias in each town, they simply offer better food, more flavorful salsas, and unique real authentic dishes (like fish baked in banana leaves for example). As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, the establishment is not much to look at from the outside. Looks pretty much like a new, residential construction with a sign on the roof, rather than a restaurant. Inside was clean, but lacked any real decorative flair or effort - pinatas and tiny sombreros tacked to the walls seemed like a last minute afterthought. No big deal. Very casual seating and settings. For a Wednesday afternoon they seemed to be doing well as far as the number of patrons go. The "wet" Burrito was ordered with a mix of chicken and chorizo with the green sauce on top. It was big and very flavorful, but, like how many burritos are made, the mix of ingredients was totally uneven. The first few bites were all rice, then some beans, then a very little chicken, then some chorizo. Had it been rolled evenly, there would have been a complementary mix of ingredients in every bite which would have improved the overall flavor ten fold. The carnitas were a little fatty, but that's not unexpected with that cut of pork. They were moist and flavorful. One reviewer complained that her carnitas were served as "big hunks of pork" instead of being shredded. FYI - the pork in authentic carnitas is always served cubed and never shredded - this isn't Taco Bell. The little chopped salad that came with the carnitas was fresh and delicious. The tortilla soup was served almost boiling. It was good with an interesting flavor that I haven't had before in a tortilla soup. Overall, we'd give this place 3.5 stars for it's authentic and fresh fare. The service was fast and relatively friendly, and the presentation of the food was well done. We liked it, but can't really rave. For the Scranton area it seems like the best bet for some authentic and tasty Mexican. read more

Always good and simple Mexican food and one of my favorite spots in Scranton. Friendly service, interesting mix of customers and very good prices. They're closed on Mondays so you have been warned! Today I ordered a new dish from here, Chuletas a la Mexicana, and it was as good as any I have had elsewhere. The cooks get the grilled chops tender but still cooked through. I ordered two tacos: spicy pork and beef. I also got Tostadas with spicy pork. We ordered guacamole for an app. (best I ever had; by far) The sauces are all uniquely different and excellent. The place is BYOB (best idea ever), but we hit up the Bog before and after for drinks so we went alcohol free during the meal. I had a bottle water and they had Mexican sodas. Neither the waitress not the kitchen staff know some basic Mexican foods; the appetizer was served as dessert, and the ribs a la Mexicana should have read "rib" a la.... One little prok rib??? WOW. Definitely not worth the effort. The owner walked in when I was ready to pay and explained that the kitchen staff was new and did not know all dishes. Come on, they are Mexican! I really regret trusting reviews here. I got a vegetarian burrito which consisted of very small amounts of rice, beans, lettuce and a slice of cold deli cheese. I had added a side of rice and beans as well. My burrito was a cold wrap, totally dry. None, and I honestly mean none, of the food had any seasoning or flavor. Think lunch at your local old age home. So being a kid who grew up in the San Gabriel Valley section of L.A. County and raised on Manuel's El Tepeyac in the Boyle Heights Area near Downtown L.A. Chicano's is lucky to get 2 stars from me! For the inexperienced "Mexican Foodie" this place might be great when compared to Taco Bell or Chipotle but with bland sauces and greasy foods in general I would call this spanish influenced food before I would call it Mexican food. The level of quality is most notable in the price, but when you use cheap ingredients, you can get away with charging less for it...The bigger deal here is the served it faster than expected, but 95% of mexican is "prepped" in the morning so heating it up and plating it makes it fast in service... Honestly if you like any place in Scranton or the whole valley over Garibaldi's...well then you are not a true "Mexican" foodie! read more

Friendly service & good quality Mexican food- perfect for a local eat. Beats a greasy chain restaurant any day! All dishes we tried showed a nice use of real Mexican peppers (casabels, ancho, and chipotle). I prefer salsa and chips rather than a sour-cream based chipotle dip as a starter but food was definitely homemade (rather than pseudo-Mexican slop from a can). Parking is a pain (street or tiny cars fit in back only) and we were surprised there was no chimichanga on the menu but we "Gringo's" got the sauced burrito and a beef dinner entrée our server (the owner's nephew) recommended. Chicano's tends to be the favorite Mexican place in the Scranton area probably because they were the first family owned business to truly succeed BUT I think Italo's has the better quality food, bigger portions, and more variety on their menu. I would recommend their wet burritos, but my favorite is their pozole. They're the only Mexican restaurant (I believe) that has pozole on their menu. You can get either chicken or pork pozole and it's delicious, and you also get tosadas with it as well. read more

Although it looks like a dove on the outside... Well, that look continues to the inside, too, BUT it's clean, well-maintained, and the food is very nice, fresh, flavorful, and large portions. The service was adequate - the gentleman serving everyone was not "friendly" but nor was he rude - he just never smiled, never said anything not absolutely required... Didn't really work for his tip.
