Checked out La Tonalteca for dinner. Drinks are good but seemed to be a bit to sweet. After one or two of them I think I'd have a headache. Food is more Tex-Mex than authentic mexican if that's what you are looking for. Very big space and was busy when I went! The service was great even though it was busy. I got tacos, they were good, but nothing was crazy about them. These churros on the other hand were awesomeee!!! I think this is good spot for some casual food. Conveniently located in the shopping center with plenty of parking, this is a nice spot with very friendly staff. Came here for lunch with my family and we tried a few different dishes. This restaurant is crazy beautiful. Maybe a bit more towards crazy, but I found it beautiful. There are pictures. All of the booths are carved and painted bright colors. I don't have the words. But I did take pictures. I thought the food was very good. I gave this restaurant five stars because I thought the overall rating for this restaurant was way off. Definitely in the 4 to 5 star range. I thought my server was very sweet. Maybe could have been a bit more attentive but sometimes I think that's harder when the restaurant is pretty empty. I came just before 3pm. Stopped in by accident. No plan just driving home from Binghamton and stopped to stretch my legs. The lunch specials end at 3 so just made it. I think mine was $13? They had a bunch of lunch specials and mine was a pork burrito with beans and rice. I thought it was excellent. Really flavorful. They start you with chips and salsa. Chips are thin fresh and hot. Salsa didn't blow me away but good. Overall a good experience would definitely try again to try some other things if I ever went back to Binghamton. I tried this place when my mom came to visit me and we both really liked it! The food was super good. My favorite was the chicken quesadilla! The tortilla was crispy and the chicken tasted great! The Texas Fajita was also delicious. The rice here is so good it came with all of the dishes my mom and I ordered. The grilled fish tacos were good but not my favorite because the fish was a bit dry to me. None of the food is spicy here so we had to order a side of jalapeños. The waitress said the dishes themselves can't be made spicy but we can add a side of jalapeños. A bit weird but it wasn't a big deal. I highly recommend trying the chicken quesadilla! It seriously was my favorite dish I tried Our waitress was really nice! She was attentive and made sure to check on us. We did go during the day when it wasn't too busy. The place itself is big and has a lot of seating available on the inside. There is outside seating as well. This restaurant is a nice casual spot. Well well, well I have found a great Mexican restaurant. Reminds me of Tex-Mex places you find with a mismatch floors in Texas. I tried the double chicken chimichanga. Here at this place, you can get it fried or just in a flour tortilla, which is always been my wish as fried foods makes my stomach hurt. Chips were warm and Salsa was good. But the Margarita was excellent. House made spurs mix. Made with Jose Cuervo Respisado. As a learned this summer...Blanca is the lowest grade u can get. After shopping near Scranton, PA, we couldn't resist stopping at La Tonalteca for lunch. It's long been a favorite of ours, so lunch there was a no brainer. We were seated immediately, and received our drinks in a couple of minutes. Our orders were taken and arrived in short order. The waiter was friendly, and very helpful in explaining the various Mexican dishes. We love the decor here. It's more Tex-Mex than any Mexican restaurant in our in our hometown of Binghamton, NY. Here, you get a genuine feeling that you're close to being in Mexico. Check out that light. The cheese quesadilla and enchaladas we enjoyed were delicious and served fresh and hot. Of course our Margarita and Sangria were tasty and delightful. It was another very satisfying meal at a place I recommend everyone within reach, or passing through Dickson City, try. read more

Passing this place often, my dad and I decided to give it a try. Always a lot of cars in the parking lot, today was no exception. But don't worry, it's pretty big inside with lots of seating. With that said, our experience was not great. Our waiter introduced himself and said when we were ready he be right there. Not true. He didn't come back at all. We had to stop another waiter to ask if he could find our waiter. After ordering, it took forever for our food to arrive. I know our food was sitting back there because my father ordered the Steak Fajitas plate, and when it arrived the plate was not sizzling (like we had seen pass us for others). Wow. They've changed a lot. One of the reasons I came here over other Mexican restaurants was for the salsa and chips. Well, now as you can see in the photos, they still bring out a large bowl of chips but a very small bowl of salsa for a table of four. I asked my renter for more salsa for the table and she tells me that they only give one bowl and charge a dollar for every bowl after the 1st. Seriously. Then bring a bigger bowl for a table of four. I have been going to La Tolanteca since they opened. The food and service have gone down hill bad. I went for my birthday and ordered the same thing I have always gotten. I was given ground beef instead of shredded beef. When I asked why, the server didn't know what to say. Then a male server came over and insisted it was shredded beef and not ground. I said no, that is ground beef. He proceeded to bully me and tell me I didn't know what I was talking about. I said I didn't want the food because it was not correct. So no birthday dinner for me. He took the plate away along with the original server. I sat there watching my husband enjoy his meal. A short time later another server came over wanting to know what the issue was. She said no problem, let me get you the correct order. She brought it out and this time it was correct. Needless to say I will NEVER go back there again. I should not have been bullied or spoken to in that manner. I was humble and polite but got treated terribly in return because I was not going to eat something that was not what I ordered. read more

Overall good experience - the waitstaff was a little awkward but not terrible and we enjoyed the food. Went on a Tuesday mid-afternoon for a late lunch and it was pretty quiet. I had the Chalupas Poblanas and although it was a little plain it was a good, straightforward meal. The corn salad and roasted poblanos were tasty. I like that their menu has lots of vegetarian options that go beyond the very basic offerings. Also bonus points for free chips and salsa! As others have said, it's not super authentic Mexican, although I think the exact degree of authenticity depends a little on what you order - there are some dishes that are Mexican-inspired but not really Mexican, and there are others that are more-or-less-successful attempts at actual Mexican food. However, based on our experience there it's enjoyable food nonetheless, and we'd go back if we were in the area. read more

If I can give it a zero stars I would. Went there the other day, my son found a bone in his fish. Told the waiter about it and that we wanted to talk to the manager. He left for 10-15 min and said the manager wasn't there and he said no supervisor was there too. Lied because I know there has to be a supervisor there. If you want Mexican food, are in the area, nothing else is open, and you really don't want to drive further out then this is probably your best bet. Located by the Viewmont Mall in Dickson city, this restaurant is easy to find and there's plenty of parking. This restaurant is bigger than it looks as they offer both indoor and outdoor seating - definitely recommend the outdoor seating in the summertime. The staff is usually pretty friendly and we've never had an issue here. They do their best to give you the optimal experience and are good about making sure your order is correct. We've tried the quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas and burritos which are all pretty good. Definitely not the BEST ever, but good enough if you're really craving some American-esque Mexican food. The food is much better served when dining in (as is the case with most restaurants) so that is something to note if you're ordering take-out. Regarding the drinks, we've tried the margaritas here and they seem to be on the weaker end. Very sugary and fruity if you get a flavor. Nothing to rave about. The prices are decent and on par with the prices at other Mexican restaurants. The biggest issue with this place is the wait time. They're very busy around dinner time so you will likely be waiting 20+ minutes to be seated. If you're ordering take-out during dinner time, expect to wait at least 45 minutes. Ordering take-out during the afternoon before rush hour is a little better, but still, expect at least a 20 min wait. Overall, this is your run-of-the-mill chain-Mexican restaurant. It's really good if you're not into eating Mexican food or have little experience with the culture, but mediocre if you're an enthusiast. Then the female manager gave attitude toward me about it and questioned whether we had really received only two kids meals. Came here on a Tuesday expecting it to be dead and it was packed to the brim. Our party of three thankfully snagged the last indoor table, although I noted after the fact they had a decent amount of outdoor seating. Hostess situation is little to none, so took some time before a staff member acknowledged the few people waiting for to-go orders or tables, and none of the front of house staff was remotely congenial (although would you be after having to serve annoying crowds of thirsty and hungry people after a year-long pandemic?) Decor is LOUD, as is the sound level. Pretty expansive food and drink menu that all sounded enticing but unfortunately didn't translate to the plate. Presentation leaves little to be desired and taste is bland. I ordered the carne asada platter with tortillas (expecting what anyone would when they see the words "carne asada": flavorful and juicy strips of grilled flank steak, soft and warm flour tortillas, fluffy yellow rice and smooth refried beans, and a heaping of sauteed peppers & onions, maybe some fixins' like salsa and sour cream, etc.). What I got was pale boxed rice with peas in it, watery refried beans, day-old tortillas, and three large, flat Salisbury steak lookin' mother-effers, no juicy strips to be had. I had to go at the meat with a serrated knife and shove it in the blah tortillas without so much as a dollop of Daisy or diced tomatoes. My guests' dishes were also equal parts slop on a plate and unwieldy ingredients (the chicken avocado salad in a taco bowl was toppling precariously with rough cut raw bell peppers and onions, making dressing it impossible) and the cheesy shrimp enchiladas looked like they were already digested. Had I not driven, I maybe could've knocked back a few frozen margaritas and then really pretended to enjoy the grub, but alas. I was disappointed, as I had heard good things, but in their defense that was YEARS ago so a lot probably has changed. The food was far from authentic ..... in all honesty everything tasted and look like it came from frozen or a box nothing fresh at all. The chips were stale and salsa taste water down. I wouldn't come here expecting authentic Mexican cuisine but it does offer very good "American style" Mexican. We ordered a couple of Margaritas, one house and one mango. Both were really good but a built stronger than we had expected. To start we chose the Queso Blanco which was delicious! For entrees we decided to stick with tacos. We ordered the beef tacos in hard shells and the shredded chicken in soft shells. The ground beef filled tacos in hard shells were much better than the chicken tacos. Four hard tacos were served which was a bit too much in my opinion. Three would have been plenty. Although the chicken soft tacos were ok, one big complaint was the filling was a bit on the wet side which caused the tortillas to become very soggy. The service was friendly and efficient. We did not check yelp before stopping here. We almost always check yelp before venturing to a place we have not been especially when we are out of town. Fortunately we were happily surprised. It's close to the highway and we needed lunch and so this fit. First off the service was great. Our waiter was very friendly Sven before we placed any order. It's always a good sign with a friendly waiter. My wife got the chicken tacos and it came with a side of refried beans. I am glad she got the beans. I am very picky when it comes to refried beans. Not that I won't eat them. I just know the exact flavor and texture I miss from eating in Arizona and Mexico. The beans here were spot on. I ate most of my wife's beans as they were that good. I ordered the carnitas bowl. I did not want a heavy burrito sitting in my stomach for the next 3 hour ride home. The bowl was a good size with 1/2 an avocado on top. The pork was also cooked nicely with a mix of well done and stringy pork. I would order that again. Food was spot on and the service was great. For 2 hours Annoying Caribbean music and no Mexican music. This is Understandable since most of the employees were non Mexican Latinos. Not very authentic. We happened upon this restaurant on our way to Maine. There was a small line when we arrived. We were seated fairly quickly. The salsa, chips, and guacamole were fresh and tasty as was the Peach margarita. Our table also had a classic lime margarita, and it was declared excellent. I've been a loyal customer at this restaurant for 16 years. I told so many people about how amazing their food was. Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding and a problem with a previous bill, I was treated like a common thief by the skeezy manager or "owner"...whatever he is, who likes to get handsy with women and then gets resentful when it's awkward cause he shouldn't be putting his hands on customers. Supposedly I left without paying a bill, and then I guess I went back to the restaurant just to rub it in their faces that I ran out on my bill (cause that's what people do, right?)...per that sleezeball. But I'm not an idiot, and wouldn't walk out on a bill EVER, especially if it was once my favorite restaurant, and honestly my friends and I don't even know if it's the truth cause they didn't give us an itemized bill to prove anything. He threatened me, he was saying really shitty stuff under his breath to me so no one else could hear...it was honestly the most unbelievable and one of the most humiliating experiences of my entire life. I had cash that day he claimed I didn't pay and we think the waiter may have mistaken it as his tip. There was a time my friend offered to pay for my drinks. That night we both ended up paying for my drinks. I had three drinks and they were on both of our bills, so they double-billed us. I didn't realize until I got home that they charged me too. I was going to say something but I decided to let it go because I thought they may not remember and I didn't want them to think I was trying to get one over on them. I had a lot of experiences and memories in that restaurant, there are so many people I took there and told about this place, and I figured bringing up those drinks wasn't worth it. I valued my times and experiences at that restaurant more than the cost of those 3 drinks; unfortunately, they don't value loyal and consistent customers the same way. They only care about money, even though I always paid and tipped VERY well. I honestly don't understand what even happened. I also tried to call to straighten it out the next day but the POS manager never called me back. I think he's a bitter and horrible manager. I've never been so offended in my life and I will never go back there or recommend it to anyone. In fact, I will tell everyone I know about this experience cause you think it's a good business but they care about one thing and it's not doing what is right for their customers. Karma is a bitch and I am convinced this POS weirdo manager will get exactly what he deserves. I am a veteran of the US Marines and it's crazy I can deploy and go fight for my country and it's people, POS manager included, but I can't go to a restaurant and be treated like a human being. But if you do go there and Maurice is your server...tip him well. He's the best, and I will surely miss some of the staff they have up there. It's unfortunate the manager sucks, like really bad.
