It's a true "hole in the wall,"with just a table or two; it's mainly take-out...but it's one of the two BEST takeout places in the area, in my book. The lomo saltados is TO DIE FOR, and the tallarines saltados is really good, too. I have gone back over and over and over again, and it is consistently amazing. Fantastic hole in the wall restaurant serving delicious traditional cuisine. This is truly a mom and pop shop ran but literal mom and pop. The space is small but quaint and cute. They don't have outdoor seating but they offer take out. The food was delicious. Definitely one of our best Peruvian experiences this far in OC. It was only two of us for lunch but we're both excited to bring family here so we can order a bunch of stuff to try. Highly recommend the Papa Rellena and the Tallarines Verdes con Pollo. The Tellena was seasoned very well. The chicken in the Tallarines was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Service was also great. The gentleman who helped us was really nice. Some of the best food in general I've ever had. There aren't too many Peruvian spots around me anymore so I make the drive for Chicama. It is definitely a treat whenever I get to have it. I always start with the ceviche. It has a burst of fresh and tangy goodness. Not exactly an IG-worthy place. Food doesn't look that appetizing and location is in a pretty crappy strip mall. It's not the kind of place I want to visit on a rainy day. It would be more depressing than watching reruns of M*A*S*H* on a black & white TV. Surprisingly, the food was pretty good, with few exceptions. I've only been to about four or five other Peruvian restaurants so I don't have a large base to compare, but most of what I tried were good. My comparison is more difficult for this place since I didn't order my usual items like lomo saltado, arroz con pollo, or ceviche, which are pretty much the only Peruvian items I'm familiar with. This place seemed to have a more diverse menu with several items I haven't seen at other Peruvian restaurants. Picantes - meat of choice in spicy garlic chili sauce and cubed potatoes. I ordered mine with chicken and it was excellent. I loved the spiciness and slightly thick sauce in this dish. It came with rice. Picante de Pollo con Quinoa - similar to the dish above but with quinoa instead of potatoes. I obviously liked the sauce in this dish but the chicken was overcooked. Tallarines Saltados - spaghetti sautéed with choice of meat, red peppers, onions, tomatoes, and cooked with soy sauce and vinegar. I got this with beef but it was kind of tough and didn't have much flavor. If this is the same beef this place uses in its lomo saltado, I will skip it. Aji de Gallina - shredded chicken in spicy sauce made with cheese, garlic, and Peruvian chili peppers. This is my favorite dish so far. The sauce was fairly thick and had a curry-like flavor. It was also the least expensive dish out of the four I tried. Aji sauce was good and packed quite a bit of heat. My only complaint is they only give you a very small amount and charges $0.50 extra for each additional request. I'm not sure if it's different for dine-in; I've only done take-outs so far. Dining area is pretty tiny and made me feel somewhat claustrophobic, so I will probably just stick with take-outs. read more

The food is ok ordered look saltado beef. It's flavorful but meat over cooked. Seems overpriced for portion. Would think that you would get better lomo saltado at a Peruvian place. She gave us a hand gesture to wait. Finally we ordered, Jalea, lomo Saltado and 1/2 rotisserie chicken. The jalea was beyond salty, and no one to be found to get water refills, lomo saltado meat was tough and dry-super salty as well, chicken-well it definitely didn't look like rotisserie, it looked old and had a weird brown color like it was incorrectly boiled.. we didn't even touch the chicken bc it looked unappetizing and unsafe to eat.. The menu is very authentic and the meals are genuinely Peruvian styles. There is a delicious green sauce in a squeezable bottle that goes on every table. Felt like we were ripped off with the charges. We came here with four people and ordered a meal each with a few sides, desserts and drinks. Water was not served for those that did not order drinks, we had to ask for it. We didn't get the complimentary bread with butter either. When the food arrived, most of it just tasted very salty. So salty that we drank most of our drinks and our water was never refilled. The dessert, one of us ordered the ice cream with crepes, but they ran out of crepes. The lady suggested fried plantain with ice cream. When we got our check, we were over charged for one of the plates, $65 for the vegetarian spaghetti. Luckily we caught it because we almost paid for it without checking. We told the lady and she went ahead and fixed it for us. I decided to thoroughly check the costs for each of the items. I remember the costs for exactly what I ordered. This time, she charged me $13 for the spaghetti instead of $12 like what the menu stated. Fried plantains with ice cream is supposed to be $8 but she charged separately--plantains $5 and Ice cream $4.5, together was $9.5. This goes for the rest of the items. We decided to not tip because we were discreetly charged much more than what was on the menu. That's just not right. I advise that everyone should thoroughly check their stubs if you do decide to come here. I can understand if it was an honest mistake, but in this case, I don't think it was...therefore, I'm giving it a 1 star. read more

We were so disappointed in this restaurant. I don't even know where to start. We ordered appetizers and they sat on the counter for 10 minutes before the waitress brought it to our table. We were sitting in front of this counter. I wanted to grab our food myself but wanted to see how long it would take before she brought it. 10 minutes. The food is edible but not great. If you want Peruvian food, there are many other options that would be better. What finally killed this place for me was when my friend got his dish, the inside of the meat was cold. He told the waitress and she literally asked him "what do you want me to do?" in a very condescending manner. No apology, didn't take the plate to try and heat it up, nothing. We went for the Lomo Saltado and the cheese empanadas. The cheese empanadas were ok but nothing special. The crust was a tad stale and the cheese was very bland. I have a feeling they would be delicious if it were straight from the kitchen so we're going to give it another chance when they open back up for dine in. Over the past couple of years I have grown a fondness for Peruvian food and after losing a Peruvian restaurant close to home awhile back I have been looking for other alternatives. Chicama is a small and quaint little near the corner of Cerritos and Knott in the city of Stanton. Chicama has a fairly large and varied menu along with all of your Peruvian favorites such as the Lomo Saltado, Saltado de Pollo as well as the Tallarines varieties with noodles instead of rice and much much more. During my first visit here accompanied by my mom who met me for dinner, I was surprised to find that we were the only guests in the entire restaurant. This often gives me the first impression of why? Is the food bad? Is the service unfriendly? Are the prices too high? Luckily for me, none of these were the case. I opted to stick with a classic and ordered the Lomo Saltado and although a tad saltier than my preference it was a good portion, tasted good and came out relatively quickly. The server was attentive but there were large gaps between checking on us and paying the bill which shouldn't have been since we were the only guests in the place. After a good first visit I had been wanting to go back. While searching the area for something other than a burger or Mexican food, I remembered Chicama and me and the wife headed over. This time I went with the Tallarines Con Carne and it was delicious as well. The place was a tad busier but they did unfortunately bring my wife the wrong dish. She had ordered the Saltado de Pollo (chicken) and was brought the Lomo Saltado (beef). She has slowly been transitioning beef out of her regular diet and going for leaner proteins but she decided not to say anything and seemed to enjoy the dish nonetheless. Overall, I am a fan and will definitely come back for another round. Hopefully the attentiveness of the staff will pick up a bit and they can ensure the right dish comes out of the kitchen (always a worry when they take your order without writing it down). An easy 3.5 stars that I will round up for the quality of the food. read more

Yelp Challenge 2016 *update* Time to turn in my crown. My last 3 visits here have been unmemorable. The food from their early days are nothing but a distant memory. Located at Knott and Cerritos in a tiny plaza. Came on a Saturday for lunch. We were the ONLY customers. I'm not sure if the owners head was in another world but we had zero service. His attention was spent staring at his computer screen. Not once did he check on us between bites. After our order was placed and bread was brought out, no check ups until our meal and extra bread was brought out. Then he went back to his screen. Our drinks were empty, never refilled. We had to motion for our check because his attention was on his screen. The food here is just okay. Pollo Saltado has very little meat. Its more fries and onions. The steak dish we ordered was very dry and plain. A few weeks prior to my last visit, my to go Pollo Saltado was the same. Less meat more fries and onions. The mister told me to remind him about our service next time he has an itch to visit. Super sad about our last experience and last to go experience. Service goes a long way. I understand if the place is packed but we were the ONLY ones here the entire time. 4 stars to 2 stars due to inconsistency in service and taste. The food isn't horrible. Really good food and the prices are reasonable. Came here once for to go and came here to dine in. They can definitely improve on their service, no one even came up to us and asked if we needed anything else or how was everything, refills on water, etc. I got the pollo saltado and it was really nice, fresh tasting and very flavorful. The previous Peruvian restaurant at this address was Nory's and it was a horrible place to eat. When Chicama took over I was hesitant to try it just because I couldn't get Nory's out of my mind. I'm so glad I gave it a chance since my two visits have been excellent. It's a true mom & pop restaurant and everything is made from scratch. Sunday Dinner was a waste of time. I had convinced my husband to come have dinner here, my husband told not to because his previous experience in wasn't great. Of Course I didn't listen. We finished the bread basket with the aji sauce and our waters didn't come. Went up to the counter and asked for our waters. Soon they brought out our plates. An unassuming mom-and-pop place. Came in early on a Wednesday night because I had heard of the amazing shortbread cookies here. They are Alfajores cookies - a delightful light shortbread sandwich cookie with Dulce de leche (maybe?) filling. Proprietor (I assume) knew exactly what it was and said $7.50 for 6. I was trying to decide if I wanted to get more than one order but decided to try the beef empanadas instead (3 for $9). Decided to also take something home for dinner - was recommended the Seco de Cordero (lamb stew) - $17.50. "No, it's not strong". To be fair, he did recommend the Lomo Saltado but said it would be better eaten there. The empanadas were pretty small, and tasted like it was fried in old oil. I had high hopes but the filling was unremarkable. The lamb was a tad gamey, the stewed beans were palatable. The star of the meal were the alfajores cookies, albeit pricey. Very tasty PLEASE NOTE: The Aji De Galinas is not on the menu but amazing! This is one of my favorite Peruvian dishes. They forgot to put it on the menu lol.
