I called Illinois Insulators based on reading some good reviews, and I was very happy that I did. Steve the estimator came out in a timely manner and gave us advice about what we might want to do to improve the insulation, but I never once got the feeling that he was pushing work that was unnecessary just to pad the estimate. The crew showed up on the appointed day and worked very hard, and left our entire house exactly the way they found it. They vacuumed after themselves and everything was very tidy when they left. I feel like they were very thorough and efficient, and I am very happy that I called them to do this job.

Rearranged my schedule to be there at 4 o'clock on Friday. 415. No one called me. I texted the woman who made the appointment. She said John was stuck in traffic and he would call me. Shocking traffic on a Friday afternoon the weekend before Christmas?!? John called me. He said he was just getting on the freeway and was an hour and a half away. I rearranged my schedule again. I told him I would be there till six. He said that's fine. He would come after his next appointment. 630 he still had not called me or come. The water restoration company requested that the snow and gutter ice be removed before they could begin the mitigation process. Given the cold weather and snow storms, it was difficult to schedule an appointment with a snow removal company. Subsequently, we found American Roofing & Snow Removal ("ARSR") during a google search. We called the phone # on Yelp, and the owner--Alex Stevens--responded immediately. They had a crew available that afternoon, and we signed a contract that stated ARSR would: "Remove all ice and snow from sections of roof of property where needed all ice and snow will be removed from deck of roof and gutters and downspouts and also remove all snow and ice . To remove snow ice we will be using a pet friendly sodium and calcium melts and tools and heating elements. After snow and ice is removed we will inspect damage and consult with home owner options on repairs to stop current water damage." The hourly rate was $250/hour and they only accept cash. The crew estimated that ~ 30 inches of snow accumulated on the roof. The attached pictures illustrate the snow removal and existing gutter ice. They did not remove "all ice" from the gutters and downspouts per our signed agreement. They told us it would take 24-48 hours for the calcium to melt the ice. The pictures were taken on Sunday 2/21/21, and the gutters are still filled with ice. I texted and called Alex over the weekend, and demanded that he return and de-ice the gutters. He has not been responsive, and has been elusive. He will not confirm a time to finish the work for which we compensated him. I will update our review if ARSR completes their obligation outlined in their contract.

Our whole experience was wonderful from beginning to end in working with Jim and his team…read more Jim and his team were punctual, professional, and easy to communicate with either by phone or email. Jim's initial assessment of what we needed felt very honest and he spent a lot of time answering our questions and helping to educate us on why he recommended certain things and not other things based on our home and what he saw in our attic. The price we were quoted felt fair based on the work that was needed, and the rebate that Jim was able to offer was also a gamechanger. We'd happily work with Jim and his team again for our energy related needs. For context the work that we had done was having additional blown-in insulation added to get up to code, sealing gaps & air leaks, and adding weather stripping around our hatch to create a better seal.

While other assessors came across with a salesman approach, Jim was super practical and realistic from the start about my options. Like I was initially set on getting cellulose for my attic, but Jim pointed out some limitations given the age and construction of my home (condo built in the 1970s). He mentioned examples of older places with cellulose developing issues like sagging ceilings. No other assessor mentioned this, so deciding to work with Jim was an easy choice. He was honest and only recommended what worked best for my situation. As of writing this review, it's been over 2 weeks since his crew came and completed both air sealing and insulation. Before, my second floor would always had a 4 to 5 degree temperature difference from my main floor. Since their work, there is no significant difference. I even checked the temperature consistently for a few days just to make sure. Whatever they did, it's made a huge difference! Overall, I'm very happy with Jim, his team, and the quality of work they provided.

GoFoam is a great provider of retrofit foam insulation for existing construction. When we found…read moreout our condo had no insulation installed in the gut rehab done in 2005 (boo! to the developer) we contracted with GoFoam to get us insulated. They do foam install during construction too (wish we could have taken advantage of that instead). The process is a little scary (many large holes drilled in the drywall so foam insulation can be pumped in) but the team is completely professional. At the end of the day, our place was clean and plastered, and at the end of the week, we had skim-coat completed and all our paint back up through a recommended partner. I'm going to have to find his info as well and throw him up under painters - total sweetheart. There's a tax rebate and right now Peoples Gas is issuing rebates as well, so it wasn't cheap, but it was affordable. Our place is a lot warmer and quieter. Since the real estate market sucks right now, it was worth it to make our current place more comfortable.
