Our porch was incredibly old and falling apart, so we desperately needed a new one. They came out for a quote, and I feel like Patrick knew exactly what we wanted, I didn't have to explain very much what we were looking for. He noticed that some things were out of code and said that the old one would have to be completely demolished and a new one put in, including footings. About 24 hours later, we had a quote with three price points, one with wood only, one with Trex only, and one with wood with Trex for the stair treads and landing. We went with the mix. We were lucky and our porch was small enough not to require any city permits, so we were able to skip that step. They said they were a few weeks out, which we were fine with, we weren't in a rush. But, we got an email a few days later saying that they had to reschedule another job and could fit us in earlier than expected. Perfect for us! The whole thing took three days, 1 to demo and build the new footings, 1 to build the rest of the porch, and 1 for the clean-up crew to pick up the debris. Everything went really smoothly; I was impressed with how clean everything was after the fact and the new porch looks great. It was clear that we were getting a solid value for an install that was completed on-time in December no less! Old deck was demolished in half a day, then a one hour crane to lift off the old deck and lift up the material, timed perfectly. They accommodated a half-day pause for some roof repairs that I hastily scheduled. The quality of work was truly outstanding for the value. We opted for the picture frame which makes for a great and refined look. We went with standard pressure treated pine for the railings but with a Trex cocktail rail to protect the railing. Homework: we did it. We called a bunch of porch companies to come give us estimates. Some never showed. Patrick showed up on time and was polite and professional. He didn't push anything on us. He took notes and got back to us each time in a timely manner through out the whole process. I liked Patrick. He wasn't one of these guys that shows up and acts like he can't talk to the wife. That stuff doesn't float here. This is OUR house and I feel like some companies don't get that. Patrick gave us a timeline of what would happen. He never sounded or acted annoyed if we reached out with questions or wanting more updates. The deck took 2 1/2 days to be put up. It was amazing to see how fast the guys worked. It was on some hot days here in Chicago. They worked fast, did a great job and they were also super nice. Conclusion: we love our deck. It's beautiful. It looks and feels strong. After much research I decided to use Porch Builders/Estes Builders. Still confused by the 2 names. I have been in contact with Patrick Grzebicki. We spoke on the phone, via text, via email. Always good to have a paper trail. I received a quote of $3400 to redo my porch which included a $500 City of Chicago permit fee. That's Chicago 4 ya! Once I accepted the contract and signed I was told I would be put on the schedule. After 6 days I reached out to office & informed them I need a more concrete date due to work, other appointments. Patrick was efficient to get me in earlier. The 1st crew came and demoed the porch on 6/26. Next day 2nd crew came & built most of porch. I was told the main post will need to settle for a day & will be back on 6/29 which a guy came back and installed the spindles by himself. He also accidentally kicked a sculpture of mine. I informed Patrick who apologized as well as worker and deducted it from my balance. On 6/30 1 of the original guys returned to pick up debris. They take any surplus items(extra wood, 2 bags of cement), states in contract. Rep had to replace 1 of the cracked spindles. If u use your credit card u are charged a 3.5% convenience fee(1/2 down, $1700 + fee of $59.50; same with balance). Overall I feel this was a good transaction however I deducted 2 stars for spilled concrete on sidewalk, fence & bricks; broken sculpture; had to tell worker a spindle was wrong way; a spindle was installed but obvious cracked; excessive sawdust over back yard, basement entrance & in decorative rocks; placed some debris in regular trash can. I feel they should have used a tarp to control some of the sawdust. Otherwise I recommend. read more

I feel terrible that I have not made this review sooner. The reason I feel that way is that I hope that if anyone is looking for a porch, whether it be a wooden one or a deck of Trex, that this review would make the selection of a builder to do the work much easier. My wife and I interviewed 5 different deck builders, 3 of which were listed in the Trex website as Trex authorized. One of our requirements was that we also wanted a pergola; what's the use of a deck if it's to hot to enjoy? Porch Builders / Estes Builders was the 5th quote we got. The issue was that most builders did not have a pergola option, or one that we weren't interested in. The other issue was price. Only the Highland Park company's estimate was twice what others were charging, otherwise, the deck without pergola was all within $2,000 of the Porch Builder price. There were 3 additional factors that led us to select Porch Builders (PB for short). 1) Patrick Grzebicki. He came out to take measurements, was extremely likeable, courteous, well informed and completely understood what we wanted in a deck. Throughout the process, he promptly answered questions, even often at night. During the process, my wife & I made numerous changes and upgrades and Patrick was right there providing new cost estimates and options. More importantly, not once did I perceive any hesitancy in his or Adams' (more on Adam later) voice or tone. It was a very smooth build. 2) Adam owns Porch Builders. He came out several times before and during the build. His attitude is what actually sealed the deal. He was able to visualize EVERYTHING Connie & I described. Then he took our rough design and turned it into a masterpiece. I hope I can post some pictures here after this review. If not, feel free to ask PB to have us send you some. In fact, I see that one of our referrals posted a 5 star review here too! When Adam came out, I would suggest something like a privacy wall here and steps moved there, a pergola that extended over the steps, maybe a pergola that can open and close - is that possible? He would just say sure, no problem, we can do that, not hard at all. How about electric outlets here and there and a storage area beneath the deck. Nothing we asked fazed him. His confidence level was astounding and it made us feel confident in his ability too. Every time we asked for 'more', Adam got Patrick to rush off an updated quote and provide answers. 3) Not many deck builders would build us a pergola. It's just not what they do. Patrick sent us to a home owner in which they built a pergola (and Trex deck). It was a multi-family unit with the deck on the 3rd floor roof. This homeowner was so exuberant in the quality of the deck, workmanship and pergola, it almost seemed as though they could have been relatives. She wasn't and I now understand why she felt that excited. We are as excited and thrilled to have our deck as she was to have hers. I get it! The Build: The demolition team came out and removed the old wooden deck in short order. It took me an hour to remove one plank, these guys removed the whole deck in just a couple hours. What they left was nothing! I mean, every nail, screw, piece of lumber was gone. They were efficient, had a great demo truck (that said Estes Demolition on the side) and picked up everything that they tore down. They did a great job. They were also very courteous. A day or two later, the cement footings went in, we had a lot of rain so things got slightly delayed after. There were a couple of unforeseen issues, such as one of the pergola posts was missing from the truck that delivered it directly from the manufacturer. In this case, Patrick got on the phone and the missing piece arrived just a couple days later from Kentucky I believe. There was never a real problem. If something came up, they just took care of it. A special shout-out to the two workers that essentially built our deck. They may possibly have been the two best professional construction workers I've had the pleasure to work with. They came to work early and on time each and every day, and did a fabulous amount of work. The wiring that they installed for the low voltage lights (stairs and railing posts) was tight, well routed and nicely secured. The wiring for the louvered, motorized pergola is well hidden and it too is nicely secured. I would NEVER hesitate to have these gentlemen work on another project. It was late in summer in ordering our deck. The deck was completely finished on Dec 26th. The construction quality was way over the top. Our pergola is like no other. The base has double wall 2 by 10s, solid, level, beautiful. Our neighbors and friend marvel at the construction. It's an engineering delight, a work of art. Adam has a vision and his workers carry it out. Do not hesitate to have Porch Builders build your deck or porch, you can't go wrong if you do. read more

They submitted a professional proposal to me with their licensing and insurance information. Other contractors did not present themselves as professional and knowledgeable as the Porch Builders. They gave me an estimated schedule of the work timeline and they showed up and worked and delivered a finished product that satisfied me. They tore down and removed my old concrete porch and stairs and put up a wooden (pine) porch and stairs with wooden railing.
