He repeatedly threatened to walk off the job when things didn't go his way, and eventually did--leaving the project unfinished halfway through construction. He even tried to discredit me by claiming I was yelling at his crew, despite the fact that I have video and audio recordings of him yelling and using profanity at me while I maintained politeness. I purchased a coop and will be doing multiple jobs over the next two years - including a new bathroom and kitchen. I was starting with a smaller job first involving multiple carpentry related items. It's a good way to assess whether I'd use the contractor again for the more complex kitchen and bath. My HOA must approve any contractor before work commences and requires that they be licensed in Chicago, Insured, and bonded. Chicago Partners claims to be so on their website and confirmed that to me in person. IIan was very charming, knowledgeable, and initially quite responsive. His quote was detailed and helpfully assigned a dollar amount per task, as I'd requested. Unfortunately, as another reviewer noted, the proposal included language that would waive and indemnify Chicago Construction for any damage, harm, or injuries etc. that Chicago Construction might cause in the course of their work. I spoke to IIan about this and he said he was a lawyer and wrote it himself. I'm certain he did. I managed a contracts office doing over $300 million in business each year - none of my staff would ever approve a waiver that puts 100% of the risk on the client for harm that a contractor might cause. I asked IIan what was the point of requiring a contractor be bonded and insured was if I was going to waive their responsibility anyway? I told him my association wouldn't approve such a waiver. I asked him to strike the language and also to reduce the tasks in the quote. Unfortunately, I never heard back from him. This was in July. I used another contractor to complete the project and am now taking bids for the bathroom. I will not seek a bid from this company. read more

We hired this team (Ilan, Sam) to build and wall and install a door after getting quotes from a few different contractors. This was the middle-price option. The project was eventually completed and generally looks okay (not perfect, but not bad). Overall, I wouldn't hire them again, but I work in design and have slightly higher standards than most! There were a few things that went wrong in the process that may be helpful to share: (1) Their team failed to install drywall tape at the top of the new wall (drywall install basics), which resulted in the wall separating from the ceiling as temp/humidity fluctuated. They came back to fix it at no cost, but this was a big error that should've been caught the first time around. Our bedroom was covered in dust twice (vs. just once)! (2) I provided a very simple sketch for how they should finish the top of a short wall, and Sam acted like he understood it. He definitely didn't, which is fine - but he could've asked more (or any) questions. The initial result was very sloppy even by a non-designer's standards, and I unfortunately had to ask them to redo it. (3) The project took twice as long as they said it would, even before the missing drywall tape was discovered later. This is typical of most contractors, but it's always a bummer. read more

I had them come out to repair a dishwasher that came disconnected in my kitchen. Anthony came out for a quote shortly after I reached out on Yelp, and then they sent Lorenzo out to fix it about a day later. The fix was simpler than we'd realized once Lorenzo took a look at it and instead of doing any sort of make-work, he just did what needed doing. He had all of the tools and parts he needed with him, and so he was able to do the job in under an hour. (I'm actually running the dishwasher as I write this.) We looked for a contractor for quite some time. We clicked with IIan immediately. IIan took care to review the project, visiting with us twice before we hired him. No nonsense, no drama, no Taj Mahal recommendations, just sensible pros delivering quality work at a fair price. The team checked in with us often to confirm details, even those that others might have deemed too small to bother, but it all added up to make our new kitchen even more than we hoped. And that's saying something. I had drawn ideas for our new kitchen at least 100 times and saved for years to pay for it.
