This isn't my first time at Chi Cafe in Chinatown, but I've never actually written a review -- and it's long overdue. This place is always a solid choice. The food is consistently good, the prices are reasonable, and the service is pretty efficient considering how busy it usually gets. We ordered a few dishes this time, including one that wasn't even on the menu -- Eggplant with Garlic Sauce. They said they could make it, and it was amazing. Perfect balance of flavor, tender eggplant, and just the right amount of garlic. 10/10 -- I really hope they add it to the menu! The Fried Fish Fillet with Sweet Saki Sauce had a nice, light batter and crispy texture, but the sauce was a bit too sweet for my taste. 6/10 The Salt and Pepper Pork Chops were flavorful and had a good crisp to them, but just slightly on the dry side. Would've been perfect if the meat was a little more moist. 8/10 The Walnut Shrimp was really good -- nice crunch, good balance of creamy and sweet. 9/10 And of course, we always order the Pea Tips with Garlic Sauce -- one of my favorites here. So delicious and healthy. 10/10
One of the best Chinese meals I have had in a very long time. We were able to feed my family of 5 (4 adults and one 11 year old) for only $100. The value you get and generous portions here is unbeatable. We were very stuffed after our meal. Service was super fast and friendly. We were seated right away and everything was perfect. We ordered: - Young chow fried rice with shrimp - Sizzling beef saki sauce (my favorite out of everything) - Sizzling beef rib black pepper - Shrimp wonton soup - Clams with black bean sauce - Oxtail clay pot with honey pepper sauce - House Hot tea for the table - We also had 3 bowls of white rice to share since all the entrees came with a bowl. My sister in law was saying that if you eat at Joyee right across from here it would be double the price. Definitely spend your coin here if you want authentic Chinese food in Chinatown!
Chi Cafe was my default place to eat and order delivery from for a few years. As more restaurants have popped up, we have tried others to get exposure to the parts of Chinatown. We finally dined in after not being here In a year or so. The food did not disappoint as I ordered my favorites - the salt and pepper pork and the egg white and dried scallop fried rice. Service was rather quick and we received our chow mein within minutes of ordering and the friend rice and salt and pepper pork chop soon after. We will add Chi Cafe back in our rotation.
Many years ago, we used to dine in Chi Café every time before heading to an art center's monthly Third Friday open house. There was also a time when we regularly picked up takeout orders for our daughter, who used to live in the city, after our weekly dim sum with extended family. This past Friday before we went to an art exhibit in Bridgeport, we stopped in Chi Café to dine again, after at least 6 long years! One major change is that they now cater to the late-night crowd, open daily from 4:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. When we arrived at 7:00 p.m., still early for the late-night scene, the spacious restaurant had only a few occupied tables. The interior was modern and very clean, though it was quite cold inside due to the strong air conditioning. I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious and clean the ladies' room was, which is often a rare find in the city. The only detail that needed improvement was the tea cups, which had noticeable tea stains. Soaking them overnight in baking soda might help. That said, the complimentary tea had a nice aroma. The staff were all friendly, and our server was especially knowledgeable about their extensive menu. He offered helpful suggestions and answered all our questions with ease. For the three of us, we ordered and shared the following: Curry Fish Balls Fish Fillet Congee Tofu with Fish Fillet Pot Stir-Fried Rice Noodles with Beef Chi Café Special Fried Rice The food was just as good as we remembered and still reasonably priced. My favorite dish of the evening was the sizzling hot Tofu with Fish Fillet. The tofu was deep-fried and then marinated in a flavorful sauce, with the inside soft and silky smooth. Everything was authentic Hong Kong Cantonese style. Portions were very generous, and we had leftovers for the next day's lunch. All in all, it was a satisfying meal with great value. We'll definitely be back for more. Highly recommended.
Wonton noodle soup was as hoped. Nice pieces of plump shrimp. Egg noodles were chewy and not mushy. Ask for the red vinegar and have on the side with white pepper. Garlic on choy had a nice garlicy sauce. Came with a bowl of rice. Chili oil is decently spicy so you don't need a ton like at other places.
Gets really busy and full, expect to wait for a table. The usual Chinese fare. They have my favorite pea pod tips. Neef dish and others are delicious but I worry about the healthiness lol. I meam there's a lot of fat and grease but that's what you expect in Chinese dishes and oftem what makes it special and delicious.
Went here because it was open late after seeing a concert at United center. Thankful. Ordered some noodles, fried rice, tofu, and green beans. Place felt authentic, busy, attentive. Service was quick as well. Food came out fast. It's very loud inside but I wouldn't expect less. Gives the vibes of an actual Chinese restaurant. Not bad for a quick bite and late night food!
First of all, The server took our order with a smirk like he's not glad that we're there which spoils as this is our first visit to this place. But instead of walking out, we still gave a chance to try it since it has 4.5 stars review coz maybe the food is worth it. We ordered beef brisket soup, chicken wings, beef innards and beef intestine. Other than being so bland or too salty, almost everything has a large amount of lettuce for salad which overpowers the taste. All the meat are hard and i choked a little like twice to their beef brisket and pork intestine. The noodle is not cooked that it is a little hard and dry, this is their beef brisket noodle soup. Their mango milkshake tastes like an instant or powdered milkshake. Not a fresh one. No free tea like the other chinese restaurants. In the picture i took all the lettuce because it is too overwhelming already. Oh, i forgot to take lettuce in fried wings. Condiment is only soysauce and chili. Just an honest review. I do not recommend this reataurant.
We usually come here if we have visitors coming to visit, since they open til 2am every night. Price is very reasonable and they have a wide selection of items to choose from. There's usually a wait if you come in late at night or during dinner time. Service is very quick and staffs are very friendly and efficient! It's our go to if we can't think of what to eat, we always get the sweet and sour pork ribs, garlic pea tips and the dried scallops egg white fried rice ! Their fried rice is also pretty decent!! It's a very casual quick dining, and they will validate parking if you park in that big parking lot. If you are looking for something quick, with variety and affordable option, definitely come check this place out!
We stopped by this evening for a bite to eat. The menu is extensive, offering a wide variety of choices. My husband ordered the Mongolian beef, but what arrived was more like beef and broccoli. It tasted somewhat like pot roast. The broccoli wasn't properly cut, with large stems included, resembling little broccoli trees. The beef was a bit chewy, and overall, the dish was not impressive. I opted for the honey citron tea, served cold. It was light, refreshing, and quite enjoyable. The service was quick, but not particularly personable. Nothing stood out that would entice me to return and try something else. The restaurant has plenty of seating, and the ceiling features a cool 3D leaf art installation that covers the entire area. Chinatown has so many great places to try. Overall, this one was just okay. Perhaps another dish would be better.

One of my favorite childhood dishes was tomato beef chow fun, and when I moved to Chicago I felt so nostalgic to find it. After being repeatedly disappointed to never find it listed on restaurant menus in Chinatown, I decided to check out Chi Cafe one day and just ask about it even if it wasn't on the menu. They had it. Even better, I didn't have to explain what it was. Their version has eggs, which I didn't mind at all. It was a mouthwatering combination of sweet, savory, and acidic. I ate the entire dish myself. Came here on a Sunday afternoon with my friends and the food is delicious, especially for the price. We ordered four things: Westlake soup - nice starter with egg and beef inside. Fish filet with corn - breaded and fried fish that comes with corn in the sauce as well as rice. The texture and flavor of the fried fish is so good, and the corn adds a little bit of sweetness. Fried string beans - with minced meat and chilis. Crunchy texture and great flavor. Mongolian beef - this dish was a little on the saltier side for me, but the beef was really tender. Overall, for the total price of $38 for all four dishes (excluding tip), this place is definitely worth a visit. read more

After 9 years of my first review, this place still my favorite to grab a quick bite to eat. My husband, brother and I are regulars. We like the restaurant very much, but we love to order to do more because it does get packed at night. They are open till 2am so late night parties come a lot. The food is amazing and great for the price. We always order the on rice meals. Their Salk and pepper squid is amazing. Their soups are delicious. Must try the noddles dishes too. This place is perfect for people that don't have much money but enjoy delicious food. A lot of student come here and families too. The place is clean and the waiters are always nice to us. If you are looking for some good comfort food I'd say this a good spot to go to! Got the sizzling beef ribs, garlic on choy, I think the fried fish fillet with sweet saki sauce, and some fried tofu. Overall had a good experience here. Beef and the sauce was good but a little on the saltier side. I'd say out of these my favorite dish was the fish since it was fried really well and the sauce with it was sweet but also savory. Do wish the serving sizes were a little bigger but overall still good. read more
Very good authentic Hong Kong style Chinese food! If you're looking for a nice clean place to eat at in Chinatown with a massive menu, look no further than Chi Cafe. My family & I came around 1:30pm on a Sunday & we were seated immediately. There was no wait & we were instantly brought out hot tea. The menu was incredibly large & we had a little trouble deciding what we wanted to order. We ended up ordering 4 different types of congee, tai chi fried rice, & fried pork intestine. The congee was good, but they use the same base & just add different meat & toppings as you order them. The fried rice was incredible. Fried pork intestine wasn't really my thing but my mom really liked it & said it was very good quality. Overall, very fresh authentic Cantonese cuisine. Definitely would come back. read more

Came here with some friends for dinner on a Wednesday night. There was no wait so we were seated right away. The waiter gave us some time to look over the menu, which was very necessary because the menu is huge and extensive. My one world of advice would be to come in with a vague idea of what you want (i.e., small bites, noodles, soup, rice, vegetables, what type of meat, etc.). My group of five decided on our order and ended up sharing most of what we got so we could all have a little taste. The standout for me was the Japanese style tofu. It was unexpectedly delicious! One thing I probably wouldn't order again is the sweet and sour shrimp. It was good, but sweeter than I was expecting. It was pretty much the only dish we didn't finish. The prices are super reasonable. So if your looking for some good dinner in the Chinatown area, come check out Chi Cafe! read more
This place has that classic HK style that reminds me a little bit of shooting star cafe that I have good memories of in Oakland, CA. The food here is again classic and authentic imo. Food (7.5/10): I love the baked dishes in particular bc they are more unique and you can't get it at any Chinese place. My favorite is the baked seafood over rice dish. It's cheesy and saucy. It can be a bit heavy if that's a concern but definitely an awesome dish for those late night munchies. Value wise this place is fair/standard. read more
A high 4 stars to the Chicago gem of Chinese food. I ordered in the following Items: Spicy beef noodle soup: this was spicy , fresh and delicious. I ordered with udon noodles which went perfectly with soup that came with it. The beef was well cooked. The lettuce was traditional as one would expect. Overall good dish. Good bang for the buck. Chicken fried rice: this was very well cooked. I ordered extra spicy thus they added jalapeños. I would have preferred more red chillies for this. The smell was great, the taste was traditional Chinese, and this was packed well. The restaurant took proper measures of safety when packing food so kudos for that. Good food overall. read more
At first I thought nothing would be open at 3am. I was about to Cry Cafe. I was slowly driving By Cafe. Then I let out a relieved Sigh Cafe. I saw this place open and I said Hiiiiiii Cafe! But yes, I breathed a Chi of relief when I found out that this cafe was open until the small hours of the morning. That was exactly what I needed. I'd been out with cute girls dressed in almost nothing, visiting nightclubs in The Loop and gay clubs in Boystown, and hadn't eaten, and now it was 3am. Unlike Matchbox 20, when it's 3am in Chicago, I must not be lonely. I wanted to love this Chinese restaurant but the truth is that I don't really love it. For starters, their service is absolutely atrocious. They were fairly prompt and did everything right in general terms, however in terms of the attitude - they not only gave me a bad attitude and treated me like they didn't really want me in their restaurant but they got into a verbal sparring match with a Chinese customer about what I cannot say because I still don't speak Chinese at all. Maybe there was a girl named Manda outside and they wouldn't let Manda-in. As for the food itself - the Hong Kong milk tea was very much average whereas the Salty Fish Salty Chicken Eggplant was good, but the Meat part was a little too salty and the sauce was a little too fake tasting. Definitely a very salty dish. However they did use good-quality eggplants and they tasted pretty damn good. Did I mention the saltyness? Speaking of salty meat.... oh never mind. I probably would have given this place at 4 star rating except for the unfortunate ending whereby he rang me up for $13 and then brought me 7 singles back and I I said Thank you and put my thumbs up to him and for some reason he thought that meant that he was keeping the entire amount of the tip. The service wasn't even good - not at all - and yet he was way over eager to keep a tip that would have amounted to 60%. So for this reason I give this place three stars rather than 4, despite the fact they have pretty decent food which is authentic Cantonese and despite the fact that they are brilliantly open until 4 in the morning. If the service was remotely friendly and not trying to take all my money as a tip then it would have been 4 or even 5. And I can't always write good reviews, but I can Try Cafe. And I was wondering what the customer was yelling about and being yelled at about, but I didn't want to Pry Cafe. So I didn't ask him Why Cafe. But the waiters looked at him like they wanted him to Die Cafe. Now Barbie wants me to go down to the Y Cafe. And I don't mean the gym. Later. read more

found this spot for its noodles & late night hours! we came around 12:30am on Sunday night & there was a short wait. we started with wonton soup and garlic honey chicken wings. i loved the wonton soup! the garlic honey chicken wings tasted like sugar rather than honey. we ended up not eating them. for noodles we got the fried rice noodle & beef with soy sauce and the stir-fried chow mein noodle with beef. they tasted very similar & needed a little something for better flavor. overall we'd go back when craving chinese late at night! read more

It's been a while since I've had Chinese food, and I was craving fried rice. Decided to pick some up from Chi Cafe today. Now I know I haven't had any in awhile, but since when do we put lettuce in fried rice? It's definitely not green onions. Besides the lettuce, the rice is ok. I just hate when I have a craving for something, and what I get doesn't live up to expectations. read more

This is how my food was delivered. Very disappointed! The driver literally called them scurried away leaving the food in such poor condition. They will typically ask for a tip and signature upon delivery, but not this time, and it's obvious why. I've eaten here in person several times and have had good experiences, however I will NEVER order delivery again. read more

Quick service this time around to get sat however it took about 35 minutes for our entrees to finally come out. We also got mango smoothies with boba which is always our go to and tasted delicious. Highly recommend still getting the sizzling beef with the sweet sauce and the salt and pepper smelts! The best food on the menu hands down! I paid $43 including tip and tax. read more

One of my favorite places in Chinatown! Fish stomach was good, it had some chives with oyster and was seasoned well. If you haven't tried salt and pepper smelt fish, it's a must, it's with rice. Salt and pepper squid is excellent too. Trying fried pork intestine for the first time, it was a little fatty on the inside than what I expected, also wish it was a little bit more crispy, but it was still good overall especially with the sweet and sour sauce. Not on the pic, but salted green beans is too. Place is clean and staff is nice. read more

Stumbled across the store by accident since it's one of the only few places that are open after midnight. The food was quite good and the price was very reasonable. For the appetizer, I got the beef variety, which had tripe, intestines and liver. It was all good other than liver, which was hard for me to eat. The shrimp wonton was full of shrimp, and some cilantro and green onions. The noodles was a little firmer than I would like but I still tastes pretty good. read more

Cold. Stale. Rough. I have no clue why Yelp listed this as the best General Tso's in Chinatown. It was easily the worst. The crab Rangoons were equally awful. Save your money. Don't bother. read more
This place got good reviews on Yelp and was featured in some articles about cheap eats in Chicago so I was excited to check it out. First off, my limited intelligence hampered me from finding the entrance to this place as there is no entrance for some reason from the side of the Chinatown Square that I approached. I realized I had to enter from the center of the square and work my way around. Judging from the single $ sign on Yelp, I thought it'd be a place without table service but I was disappointed to find out that it was cause I hate paying tip. Anyways, the place was pretty simple and clean with a bunch of tables and such. I ordered curry fish balls ($5) and spicy beef noodle soup ($6). Total came out to $12.20 and I paid about $15 including tip. $6 is really cheap for the beef noodle soup, but $5 for fish balls is pretty unacceptable; it should be like $3.50 at most. And they gave a very small portion size of 10 tiny balls. The balls were pretty enjoyable as they had a pretty firm texture that was satisfying and the curry sauce tasted higher quality than an instant packet. The broth of the beef noodle soup was nice as it had a lot of pepper flakes in it that made it a little spicier than a typical beef noodle soup. But there wasn't a lot of beef or noodles in the bowl. It was enjoyable overall but wasn't anything special. I was a disappointed because the food didn't seem to live up to the hype but I guess that's how it is. It'd be cool to try some other things on the menu if I ever come again. read more

Seems to be quite the spot for late night from some of the reviews I browsed through, but it's a solid spot if you're looking to grab a Hong Kong style morning breakfast for cheap. They have $5.95 and $6.95 combination breakfast options. You can choose from different noodle soups, stir fried noodles, congee and even more traditional American breakfast options and each comes with your choice of a beverage (milk teas, coffee, ovaltine, etc). Service is pretty spotty here and you'll definitely have to be assertive and flag someone down when you need to order/pay. But aside from that, I'll say my noodle soup with beef brisket and instant coffee was quite delicious for an early Saturday morning. Would also make quite the hangover cure as well. Can't complain for the price point. I'm sure I'll be around this one again sometime soon for breakfast. 'Til next time, cheers! read more
This little hole in the wall place was amazing!! The chicken and rice was essentially friend chicken covered in curry over rice. Man was that an amazing meal I still think about it!! The other rice dish we got was also super yummy. It had pieces of fried Chinese sausage in there which gave it so much flavor. Seems like everything there was packed with flavor and was just so tasty. Definitely check it out if you're in the area:) read more

It's not known for the service and the facility isn't necessarily the most clean either. This place is mostly known for the cheap food and the late night hours. Tons of people come through after a night of drinking/clubbing. If you want a quick fix for Chinese food this place is fine. If you don't want to deal with the line I'd recommend coming at off peak hours. Update: Tried giving the place another try, but after seeing the man making the food not have his mask on all the way was really a turn off. The service was a bit better this time. Maybe it was cause it wasn't as crowded. Decided to remove a star due to the cook. What's the point of having a sign at the entrance that says masks are required? Their own workers don't even follow this. Isn't it supposed to apply everyone that enters the restaurant? Guess food safety and customer safety isn't a priority at all at this place during the pandemic. read more

Great place for a filling, cheap meal right in Chinatown! Their menu is pretty extensive but they have a focus on Taiwanese and Hong Kong style dishes like braised or fried meat dishes over rice, but also a huge selection of other meat or seafood entrees, noodles, soups, bbq-ish meats, etc. My girlfriend and I stopped in for a quick lunch and ordered the dried scallop and egg fried rice (it's similar to salty fish fried rice if you've ever had that) and curry beef over rice. Both dishes came out pretty fast and hot, and the place was packed so the kitchen must've been working super efficiently. The fried rice had a bit of that fried smoky flavor you expect, and a lot of savory seafood-y flavor from the dried scallops, as expected. The portion of curry beef was pretty big, with nice chunks of meaty but super tender beef, and a good mix of lean and fatty/tendon pieces. While the rice was reasonable at $10, the curry beef rice was a steal at only $6! Most of the menu is under $10, so no matter what you're in the mood for, you'll be able to find something affordable to find something affordable and tasty. While this place is definitely on the more basic side compared to some of the newer or more interesting joints in Chinatown, it's definitely a reliable place to get some cheap, good classic food. read more
I've been dining at Chi Cafe for years and it proceeds to be one of my favorite restaurants for delicious, comforting Chinese food! It's also one of the best spots for an affordable late night meal in the city. The food is served family style, which is perfect for sharing with friends. This time around I ordered a large Hot and Sour Soup, Fried Squid Hong Kong Style, and Soy Sauce Rice Noodles. read more

This place never disappoints - I've been here like five times, and there's always something good! Another perk, it's open late. We always make an impromptu appearance here, and the food is always delicious and on point. The servers can help you make selections, if you ask. It's really quite wonderful in that we were about to order the shrimp dumplings, but the waiter took one look at us, and was aware enough to ask if we ate pork and beef, and we answered "neither", and he said, well the shrimp dumplings have minced pork! Disaster averted!!! I almost wanted to kiss him!!!! We love the Sichuan Shrimp, and we always get all our orders made extra spicy. Also, their spicy shrimp fried rice is great too. The pan fried chow mein is another delight. The rice cakes are dope. But my FAVORITE part of the meal - their crab rangoons. We've ordered them five times and they've always come out hot and fresh! The tea served with the meal leaves something to be desired as it's bland, but the food is totally on point! read more

Is this restaurant good for kids?
Yes! Super casual, they can make some noise, it's big enough they can move around if needed. Menu is easy to find chicken dishes or appetizers that they'll enjoy.
Does anyone know how to replicate their chili oil (w/ the little shrimpies)?
You can buy some 🌶 oil from asian groceries stores or im sure u can find a video on you tube on how to make it, hope this helps!
