I think it's hilarious that Yelp is asking if Chevron gas station has compostable containers, reusable utensils, & take-out. I guess they have take-out, but you have to provide your own containers. Anyway, I like this station for convenience, as they have 3 entrances, a smog check, & a convenience store. This pumps are basic, can only pay by inserting credit card, but if you care, you can get Safeway points. For large vehicles, you might want to go elsewhere. The only entrance wide enough is adjacent to the sidewalk, must be entered from market street. You will have zero ability to turn around, so pick you pump wisely. The other pump stations require some finagling, even for small cars. The gas is cheaper on the other corner, but much harder to access. One other thing, this doesn't happen on every visit, but the cleaning water was filthy. That said, this is my go-to gas station. read more

God forbid you try to take a penny from the leave a penny/take a penny cup...I did that once so I could get a dollar back instead of a bunch of change and it was explained to me that 'It's only for people who need it.' Okay, I normally don't review gas stations. But this one was notable enough to deserve a brief review. So first of all, I was shocked to find that they're as cheap as some of the "hood" gas stations I go to. So that's surprising for the bustling area of Castro, especially since there aren't many gas stations in the area. Second, they have these little screen things above the gas pumps. I usually ignore them because they're usually trying to sell me some gas card I don't need, but not this one. During the 90 seconds it took to pump my gas, I turned my attention to the screen and learned how to properly taste and judge pinot noir by color, clarity, consistency and how to properly taste it. Expensive. A bit hard to get in and out because it's in a weird spot in a complicated intersection. Basically, it's one of those places you only really go to if you REALLY need gas, don't have cash for the (much cheaper) nasty independent gas station across the street, and you don't want to wait until the morning on your commute out of town to get gas $0.50 cheaper. read more

This review is for a regular Smog Check. Does anyone else living in SF find the smog pricing here astronomically high? I called a few places all over the city and got quotes varying from $60-$100. WHAT?! or better yet, WHY? I found this station due to a Google ad which claimed to have the cheapest smog check in town. Well, I think it just might be! I pulled in at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon and was out by 3:10. You can also call and make an appointment if you are planning to come in at a busier time. The Turkish man working there was very nice and got the job done very quickly, which is all you can really ask for. I hope this review saves you some $$. Bring cash! read more

This is in the Castro district on Market Street, so serves the neighborhood as one of the only options for gasoline. On 05/09/15, I paid $3.99/gallon for regular gas. It is a nice area, fairly open and easy to access from the street. You can conveniently use a credit card to pay for the gas at the pump as the point of purchase for self service. Watch out as you pull in and drive out for pedestrians on the sidewalks. read more

I just got a smog check at this gas station a bit ago. The man in charge of the smog station is friendly and nice in manner and execellent in the service he performs. I'd called and checked around different smog stations and I couldn't get a go for the smog since those stations are so busy and I must make an appointment to come in, which I don't have time for. Newman, the man, at the smog station picked up the phone and he got me in the same day. The price is competitive if I have to compare but the way in which the service is handled and served is nicely done! and that gave him a 5 stars. Yay! keep it up Newman. read more

I took a picture of the sign for no other reason then i wanted to and as i was walking away i was confronted over the intercom as to why i was taking a picture. I give them no stars. I went in the get a smog check with a coupon and the guy running the place said it may be more. I asked him why and said it may be a "star, smog check" because of the year of my car. The coupon clearly states cars 1996 or older there would be an extra charge. My car is a 2003. That went well and I passed with no additional repairs...BUT... When I got back into my car to leave I was presented with a display panel of warning lights, most of which he could explain except for the flat tire light.. I really need to start frequenting more businesses in the Castro. I roll in there at 7:00 this AM, literally on fumes...no way I'm going to make it home. I seriously looked like crap. I hadn't showered and suffer from the worst case of chronic "bed head" of anybody I've ever met. They just remodeled and they have been open for ahile and they now have a nacho station. But guess what, no nachos. Been ove a month and still no nachos. This place makes most AM/PMs look like heaven. Candy prices here are high, prices for everything here are high. No car repair services. No smog check. No oil changes. Are you sure this is a gas station? lol No flat tire repair service. Crazy high gas prices. One employee speaks almost no English. Which is fine unless you want to ask a question. Another employee has some sort of skin condition where he has to always put some medical lotion on his hands so when you get change it's usually greasy. Um, filled up my gas tank...Paid a little bit over 45.00 using a credit card. I noticed they charged me 145.00 dollars. I called the gas station thinking I did not end my transaction and somebody used the pump right after me. That wasn't the case. Finding an easy accessible gas station downtown can be a hassle. This is little less of a hassle, but still not great to get into. To get into this gas station you must enter from certain direction. If you're going in the opposite direction, you're out of luck. Chevron is not the cheapest gas station in the world, especially in the city. I've gotten there a few times with half the pumps out of order. I once accidentally left my gas cap there, and I was headed back, 20 minutes both ways, they threw it away. I'll admit that the man was nice enough to fish out of the garbage can for me, but I've been to other gas stations where they just save it. You have a car and you need gas. Cheapest Smog test in the city by far. $29.75 + $8.25 cert fee+ $2 state fee = $40 total in cash. I called ahead to make sure I would get the rate and I got the impression the price could have been higher if I hadn't. I was really worried he would try to scam me after I read the other reviews on yelp but he never tried anything like that. When I called, he told me to come over since evenings were less crowded. I got there at 6:45 and he was done a little past 7. I had a great experience and you really can't beat the price. I'll definitely be coming back in 2 years. read more

update to my last review, I reported Mike to the Automotive Bureau and the investigator was awesome. He even went straight to the owner Mike and called me to say that Mike was finally was going to refund the money. I think he could tell the owner was a jerk, because he called me back to say that he didn't think it was a good idea to have him mail a check so the guy wouldn't have my home address and he thought I should go pick up the cash in person. Obviously it's not the money, it was the principle. How he treated me that started all this in the first place. I gave him every opportunity to make it right before reporting his shady tactics. I go, I park and I wait for him in the shop and I know he recognized me cuz he immediately gets on his phone and walks away. then he walks behind my car and stares at my license plate while he's on his phone and it looks like he is telling someone my plate number. i start freaking out a little and I decide I should move my car since he was ignoring me. He orders me to get out of the car to sign the refund form, even though he could have handed it to me as he was right next to my car. I finally get out even though he was trying to intimidate me. WOW... I should have brought a posse because this guy verbally abused me, threatened me because of my negative review on yelp, and said I was stealing from him and he was doing me a favor by returning my money to me. He continued to berate me but as soon as he handed me my cash, I signed my name on the receipt and got out of there while he was still yelling at me saying he reported what was under the hood of my car (?) and that he knows I paid $50 for the smog test at another location. What an idiot, so what if I paid $50? I got my smog test when you and your stupid machine says I failed it and you forced me to pay even when I proved to you that it was your machine that was at faulty. Went here for a smog test. Scumbag guy tried to charge me $104 for the test after telling me three times that it was $29.95. He has the balls to hand me the invoice at the end of the test and tell me the regular price is $89.95 plus tax and some other BS fees. I said "you said it was $29.95," and after being friendly to me the whole time up to this point he informs me coldly that "special promotions are cash only" (meaning I had to pay in cash). That's fine, but don't try to rip me off you GD scumbag crook! Plus, how the F--- did I know that you were quoting me a promotional price?! That's the price that they advertise on their website! I believed the big advertising of $19.75 + $8.25 State Cert for smog checks - When I drove in and parked the car at the station, the guy said it would be $10.00 more because he identifies my RAV, which is a two wheel drive passenger car,to be an SUV. That's totally ridiculous. He wanted to know why I was angry with him. There is no mention of this extra charge on the internet coupon which I had printed and brought with me. These people are deceivers. They advertise in large print that they are a "Star Certified Station" and "Cheapest Smog Check in Town". Price offered: $21.75. Then you go to the station in need of a "Star" certification. They point to tiny and obscure small print and say that the since you require a check at a "Star" station, the price to you will be $50. When you phone later to express your objections they cuss at you using the infamous "F word" over and over, and hang up. Then, the next day, you find that your review, which had been at the top, is no longer given prominence on the first page of the Yelp website. How did that happen? I want to repeat that this is the worst deception and worst treatment that I have ever received at any San Francisco based business. Nice. In-n-out in a half hour. Talked with the owner on the phone, discussed the price, went in 10 minutes later, left the car there for a half hour, passed the test and paid. In the intervening time, I walked around the Castro (fun!), got myself a white chocolate caramel cappuccino from the gast station (sweet!), replied to a few work emails (productive!) and then went home. Lesson learned - I should have checked yelp before believing the smog check advertised price on their website. I even called to confirm before I sent my husband over with the car and they still insisted on charging $20 above the advertised price and the one quoted to me on the phone.
