We were in desperate need of gas. Like your car saying you only have 7 miles left to drive on your current tank. After drinking at a bar in Pacific Heights, my girlfriend's brother looked for a gas station and found this Shell. We stopped by on Wednesday, May 9th around 9:30pm. I didn't pay attention at all when we filled up, so i have no idea how much the gas costs. But the station was clean, well lit, had a market, and was fast and efficient. I had a flat tire Just now after 12AM and I drove to three gas stations before I got to this one to find the air machine is actually in service.. when I went inside of the loop shell gas station nobody was in there I said excuse me many times before this guy came running from the back looking like he was sleeping or doing something he didn't have any business and rudely told me in the middle of my sentence to get out of his store and told me he was closed. I asked him for air. He told me it didn't work he was cutting me off before I can even finish talking and shooed me out of the place. Obviously it was open because the doors were unlocked and the air machine did in fact work ..why did he lie to me about the air machine and I told him I had a flat tire? I don't know. I think he was racist because I am a very well kept clean decent person so I don't know why he treated me like I was coming in there to rob the place which I would have done if I wanted to because he wasn't even in the store to begin with. This place is apparently an Uber/Lyft driver hang out on weekend evenings. I came in yesterday evening at around 945pm and every single pump had a car at it and all but 2 cars were filling up. Some of the pumps were out of service but the others were just being squatted. Every parking spot was full but there was hardly anyone in the shop. A bunch of guys were out in the lot smoking cigarettes and hanging out. Luckily I pulled in behind someone who was actually filling up and was able to fill up after a 5-10 minute wait. But at least two cars came, left and went to the Chevron across the street instead. read more

So tonight I drove up to this Shell at 2:30 in the morning to gas up and grab some snacks. Low and behold, The clerk tells me that they now close at 1:00 AM. So the question is, what is the purpose of having a brand new LOOP in the Pacific Heights neighborhood if they aren't going to be open 24 hours like all the other Shell Loops? I come to this gas station occasionally as it's the closest to my house and the cheapest. (Why is it 10 cents cheaper here than the gas station directly across the street? Are they diluting the gas with diet Mr. Pibb? I mean seriously, who drinks that shit?) I stopped in this morning for my weekly gouging and raping of the planet when I noticed something different. They had put TV monitors at every pump. My eyes glazed and my mouth hung slack while spittle collected in the corners. Damn Chewy, why you so stoooopeeeed?!?! So yesterday I needed gas since we were making the trek out to Tarjaay, ya know that fancy French import store in Daly City. Yeah, that one. I was teetering on empty and needed to fix that so I spotted this here gas station and pulled in. As I swiped my card in the machine it said "See Attendant." Great. Hate that. I want as little human interaction in my gas pumping experience as possible. So I walked in and told the guy that the machine said to see him and I needed a fill up. Now, at this point I could almost see my words hanging and dangling in the air, "Fiiiiiilllllll uuuuuuuuppppp," but for him, I think these words did not compute. Why? Because he stared at my card, stared at the cash register, stared out the window, literally scratched his head and well, looked very confused. As he was standing there debating the meaning of life, some jerkoff came up behind me and then proceeded to cut in front of me and slap down two Gatorades and demanded to pay. "Hey buddy, I'm waiting here too, that's just effin rude! Who raised you?! Go to hell!!!!" Of course, I didn't say this, but dammit, that's what I was thinkin!! The guy then helped Rude McDude and he was on his way, but my card was still being held hostage by the clueless. I then said, "Umm, I can just use another card or can you just swipe it for a fill up?" It occurred to me then that "fill up" might have been the confusing word play for Senior Huh. He then swiped my card and charged $40 on it. Um, is this 1992? When was the last time you could fill a tank up for $40? (Thanks Bush). I then just didn't feel like arguing about it, so I headed to the car and started pumping. I then made the silly decision to purchase some water and plunked down my two bottles of Dasani. He was now wrapped up in a much more interesting conversation with someone than with ringing me up. From what I gathered something was "mujer" y "grande" y " bien" (There he goes talking about my ass again, hehe) Finally he rang me up...and I paid cash and I was on my way. After Sunday's experience, I probably won't be going back to this gas station again for gas any time soon. Seems from the other reviews that it's a good bet for service, but gas, not so much. Took in the Honda "Civic Center" Mobile for a couple routine things: Oil Change, Brake Check- and also for another issue: a leak in the passenger side AC/ Condenser thingy that was creating a moldy smell in the car. Oil Change was not cheap, but I was told that the brakes were fine (didn't see that coming...) and they fixed the leak by patching/replacing the hose. Car no longer smells like a public restroom by the beach. Hooray! Also, I liked the fact that I was able to drop the car off, get a diagnosis over the phone, and have it ready by the time I was done with work... all in a day! I have lived in SF for over 8 years and have never found a shop that I really liked. I think my search is now over. I have an aging Jeep Cherokee and as expected it needs some work from time to time. This one was a tough issue that had to do with the front suspension. These guys were great and were nice, knowledgeable and very fair and up front on pricing. 2009 has been a bad year for my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. But Doug and Bud have eased the misery so it was about time that I wrote them a review. 2.12.09 -- Jeep's battery dies. I was parked in a street cleaning zone and had to move my car before the morning. Even though the service station was closed I was able to park it at the Shell overnight, left my key with the gas attendant, and Doug called me the next morning. He gave me quotes on the battery and a few other things I asked him to check out. I didn't have money to get it all done but Doug helped me prioritize and didn't pressure me into working on it more. I picked it up later that day and everything came in as quoted. 3.3.09 -- Jeep gets broken into and the side window smashed to bits. And oh, if it was you, are you enjoying the crappiest after market CD player ever made? I hope it was worth it, a-hole. I called Shell and Doug advised me to call around to several auto glass repair shops to get the best quote. Apparently these business are very competitive and will match quotes. Thanks for the advice! See my review of Atlas Autoglass. 4.16.09 -- Jeep needs an oil change. Ok maybe I could have saved a little money using some coupon at some shady place, but Shell is literally blocks from my apt and Doug gave me great service and was so friendly the first time that I brought it back. I didn't need an appt and he checked everything thoroughly. He also discovered that I needed some lights fixed possibly saving me from a fix it ticket. 4.21.09 -- Jeep emits death squeals on my way home. I had no idea what was going on, it wouldn't stop with the squeaking no matter what I did. So I panicked and drove straight to Doug at Shell. He jumped in and I drove him around the block to demonstrate the horror. He immediately guessed at what is was - the rubber was squeaking around the front bushing, probably due to the hot weather. He was right, a few squirts of WD-40 and it was cured. No charge. Sigh of relief. 4.29.09 -- Jeep gets a flatty. Go figure. Luckily I signed up for AAA after my battery died in Feb so I didn't break a sweat. AAA got my spare on and I headed over to Shell. Bud was working when I showed up and he looked at the screw sticking out of my tire and assured me he could fix it. About an hour later he called and it was patched up and ready to go. Woo. Saved the day again. These guys are friendly, honest, fast, and most importantly they KNOW what they're doing. Thanks guys! read more

I had such a great experience here! First of all, I called a day or two ahead to try and get an oil change for me car. The person who answered the phone asked me when I would need it by and I said that I had work at 12. So she told me I could bring it in before 9 and they'll find some time between 9-11. Thursday comes along I bring my car in a few minutes before 9 and Chelsea was super friendly. She introduced herself as well as the person who was going to be working on my car. Super friendly! I dropped it off, gave her my key and went home. Around 10:20 she calls me and let's me know I have about 5 lights on my car that aren't working. To fix them all it would cost $45 extra, and she called to ask me if I wanted to do it now or not to bother with it. I thought this was great! Thanks for offering to fix and call me to check if I wanted to fix it or had the money too. No extra appointment, no surprise charge for an oil change. Oil change plus 3 fixed lights (I didn't have the time to fix all 5) and it came out to $85. Super staff! read more

I just discovered that there is a great guy named Dan at California Shell (California and Steiner) who does car washing and full detail work - he did such a great job and was such a nice guy that I felt compelled to pass along his info. Not cheap @ $45 (for my subaru, might be different for your car) but WELL WORTH IT once in awhile, I promise. He made my old beater subaru shine like new and brought the interior to life, not to mention I asked him to clean the lenses on my headlights (extra) and now I can actually see in the dark again. Came here because it's close to my apartment and it had some awesome yelp reviews. Yes, they are very nice, but unruly when it comes to their prices. My brakes were squeaking pretty bad and I needed to fix them. They quoted me $350 for just the front brake pads alone. Found out from a friend this was pretty high for the price considering it's only the front pads. Got a second opinion from Emerald Auto Repair Shop. Emerald quoted me $175 for all pads and out the door by 1pm if I drop off my car by 10am. I'm sorry Shell, but I do not trust your prices anymore. read more

Update: I just dropped a whole paycheck's worth of $ here for car service plus new tires. However, Doug kept me informed about what was going on with my car, when needed shipments were coming in, and I felt he gave pretty fair prices for services rendered. I admit I'm no expert, so I usually leave car places feeling either kind of ripped off or extremely ripped off. Probably because I'd rather go out to a dozen expensive dinners or travel somewhere cool instead of buying new tires. Sigh. Overall, I'd go here again because of convenience and good communication. This gas station never has a crazy wait, it's always 20 cents cheaper than the Chevron across the street, and they are very helpful with car repairs. Also, the gas pumps have TVs that give you a news/weather brief which is nice if you fly out of the house in the morning feeling like you have no idea what's going on in the world. Great prices and quick service. I have taken my car here 3-4 times for routine maintenance and smog checks. They offer a nice service where you can leave your car there one night, talk to them the next morning about what needs doing, they give you your estimate, and then you pick it up at night and just pay the cashier. A nice touch for those of us who can't take time off work to deal with getting an LOF. The service guys are honest. I've never had them charge me more than their estimate. I love Doug and Chelsea. I miss them since moving down to Santa Cruz. I miss having them do my oil changes (well, somewhat) cheaply on my VW because it uses so much oil in the change- and of course full synthetic is so cheap...ugh. It was always so nice because I could just walk home from the shop, or to the bus stop. Alas. Or wen they did the big services it was even cheaper than my other shop I liked a ton. I originally went there just for an oil change and then Chelsea told me they specialized in the VW group cars and I kind of felt bad about how I was going off about ow much I loved my other place. Well, obviously I just went down the street as opposed to sketchily going downtown again. Oh, and my mom got a Mini with those silly run-flat tires that always have problems, so I told her to go there. So she does. They fix them up when they can. And that's pretty rad. Oh how I wish I could have Doug scold me for having 2 extra lbs. in my tires right now, if only I could get them to do my 60k service in SC. These folks do not mess around. They are great. One night I noticed that my brake lights were permanently on. This was definitely a problem because it was going to quickly drain my battery, so I called up the two nearest gas stations to me - the Shell station as well as this Chevron at Steiner and California. The Chevron folks had no idea what they were talking about and were going to charge me $300 to fix a little switch on my break pedal, and I was going to have to wait for them to order the parts. Doug at Chevron fixed it in less than an hour for $50 and were really friendly. I'm going to come back for small maintenance issues from now on! read more

I just got back to my desk after having my smog check done at California Shell Service and had to write my review right away! This service station is absolutely fantastic. Albeit, I've only had my smog check done, but I would feel comfortable coming back for any of the other repairs they do here, that's how confident I am in their team and workmanship. Chelse is an absolute saint - she had my car done in 30min (no wait) and even took the time to grease my squeaky timing belt. The team is very professional and their upbeat attitude doesn't go unnoticed. Not many places have that level of customer service and care these days. I heard they may be turning this 80 year old establishment into a big convenience store...let's not let that happen and keep this neighborhood shop in business! read more

My back wheel encountered a flat after brunch on Sat and I was panicking and freaking out, not knowing what to do. My friend said to bring it into a gas station close by to have it checked out. Being on Pine and Fillmore, the Shell station on California and Steiner came to mind. I was freaking out that it would be several blocks away but Steiner St soon came into vision and we slowly drove the car in to this Shell station. We had the repair guy replace the spare for us with his workshop equipment and I tipped him some $$ and he even checked the air for the rest of the tire. Unfortunately, we found a nail...sigh...so I'll have to replace 'that' tire but since I have a full-sized spare, I'm able to drive around with it for now.... read more

Most painless car maintenance-related experience I've ever had. Went in for a smog check after reading yelp reviews and was not disappointed by Chelse's cheerful, professional, incredibly efficient service. Had no appointment, came in around 11 am on a weekday, and the whole process took half an hour. With the heart of Fillmore around the corner there could not be a better place to waste a little time. $80 for the service, and Chelse directed to me to the best AAA location to get my vehicle transfer paperwork done. Talk about fast, friendly, excellent service! With all of the rain lately, I knew that I had to replace the windshield wipers before it started up again. Last year I had tried to just replace the blade on my existing wipers. I'm sure that it would have worked had I known what I was doing....but I didn't. The wipers worked fine at first, but then they started to not work as well and left huge streaks on the windshield. Fast forward to this year. I decided that I would replace the entire wiper to avoid making the same mistake. I purchased the wipers, but wanted to have a professional install them (I wasn't going to chance it again this time). So I called and spoke to Doug. He was extremely polite on the phone and told me just to drop by and someone could help me out. I took in my car yesterday. I was immediately assisted by a friendly blond woman (I never got her name!...sorry about that). Anyhow, I showed her the blades and explained why I wanted to have someone install them for me. Not once did she make me feel stupid for not being able to do it myself. She made me feel comfortable and provided excellent customer service. When everything was said and done, I asked her what I owed....and she said nothing! Then she immediately went back to working on another vehicle that she was working on previously. I wanted to give her a tip or something, but she was sooo fast and disappeared like a ninja. I believe in all good deeds shouldn't go unrewarded or recognized, so this is my way of saying thank you. Their smog check is $80 but you can easily get one done in the city for $50. Getting a smog check is a standard state procedure so paying the extra $$ doesn't make a ton of sense. Chelsea and Doug are good people and hold high integrity in an industry often run by corruption. I give them kudos for that. My last experience with Doug was not the best, unfortunately. About 1.5 years ago my car was hit with crime. Someone cut my catalytic converter out while I was parked overnight (sold for scrap metal). This despicable crime is common in SF and other large cities. So I brought it to a discount muffler shop (that had good reviews) and got an after market cat. installed. I have an old car and this made most sense. This August I brought my car in for a smog check. Environmentally, it passed but Doug failed me for having a "tampered" cat. The cat. did not have an EO number on it (which the state requires now). Doug conveyed that if I had an EO number put on it, he would pass me. So I brought it back to the muffler shop, explained the situation, got an EO number put on (at no charge) and brought it back to him. Doug failed me again bc the EO number didn't "match up". He suggested I buy a whole new cat. for my old car and call the whole thing a "learning experience". Good suggestion! Not really... I am not upset that Doug "plays by the rules" but the burden of this corrupt auto industry ends up falling on the consumer. This is an example of getting screwed multiple ways. Not only did I spend $70 at Shell to get a failed smog check, but I wasted 3 half-days of work trying to deal with all this. Also, I learned that Doug was never going to pass me with the replacement cat. I had on my car. He could have been more direct in telling me this from the start. I would have respected that. It would have saved me hassle, time, and money. I ended up going elsewhere and getting a pass (for $50). The auto industry is about as dirty as the hands of a mechanic. Be careful people. read more

I took my car to California Shell for what I thought might be a relatively expensive job - an electrical problem that affected my right blinker which resulted in it not working when my headlights were on. Doug the mechanic totally took care of me. He fixed it in a couple of hours, charged me a very low rate, and didn't give me the whole mechanic shpiel of "you need this fixed, too" or "your flux capacitor is out of whack and I can fix that for $800."
