Always have come to this Shell for smog checks (3-4 times now). Like others have mentioned, mention Yelp discount for better pricing. I just got mine done today (Jan 17, 2024) and I think pricing went up a few dollars but not by a lot. Total was $54.95 today. The guys here are usually really quick (no longer than 30 minutes) but I usually come in the mornings so I can't speak for later in the day. Today I actually had 3 other cars in front of me but it still didn't take more than 30 mins. I really appreciate the guy running the smog checks today. He was hustling, running back and fourth when he really don't need to but it's awesome to see him taking his job seriously and wanting to get customers in and out to go about their days. As soon as a customer pulls up, he grabbed a clipboard and ran over to them. When customers were on their phones while sitting in the waiting area, the employee came over to let them know it's ready instead of yelling out their names. Just little things to made it a pleasant experience. Taraval also has a few coffee shops in the area so you could also go hang out somewhere and check back in later! read more

This station should be making bank with its primo spot at the top of 19th Avenue en route through Golden Gate Park all the way to the Bridge and Marin County and at a midway point north and south through the city. They're skimping by not reinvesting in their equipment: The pumps are old with out-of-date vapor recapturing sleeves and seemingly old card readers that put credit cards at risk. They have a Loop market for coffee and basic convenience items but I didn't go inside. Room for improvement, like equipment updates asap! read more

Got gas here the other day. Prices are regular shell prices--just above the normal. Didn't feel unsafe here mid day. It's right off the street for easy in/out access. BE AWARE AND DON'T GIVE YOUR ID CARD TO THE CASHIER!!!! On my way home dropped by to buy cigarettes. The cashier asked for ID, which is understandable and doesn't matter how old you look. So I showed him my ID in my wallet. The cashier asked to take it out (again, understandable, some people don't have good vision. After I handed him my ID he scanned the backside with his scanner. I was surprised. I told him that he could've read my birthday and enter it to the system and asked why he scanned my ID card. He didn't give any reasonable explanation and only said sorry. And like most of gas stations no manager on-site. That bar on the back of ID contains information that is not relevant to a gas station. It's sensitive personal information. They have no rights to scan my ID through their system! read more

I went inside shell gas station after mechanics told me I failed the smog test and Deyvin the cashier was very nice and helpful. He recommended what I should do to pass smog and recommended me to go to his auto shop that is honest and will not overcharge me. Thank you for your kind service and honesty Deyvin! First of all, you need to know the difference between a smog check and smog test. Look at your DMV renewal to see which one your vehicle requires. This place does a smog test only. The shop owner gave me a discount even though I didn't bring in a coupon. His first question to me was how did I hear about this place. I made up some reason - said hubby took his car here for smog test only. Later on I told hubby and he said he was also given a discount sans coupon. So I guess the shop owner likes giving out discounts. Warm fuzzy feeling to think we're saving $. I dropped my car off around 3:30pm, and was told to come back 2 hours later. No problem as I live nearby. Came back two hours later and my car was ready. I was told my gas cap needed to be replaced as it's about to crack. We drove up, granted on a saturday, and it was busy. We pulled up closer to the garage and a guy walked out. My husband asked how much and the answer was "$60 and your going to wait an hour" and he stormed off. His tone. His demeanor. Everything was just all wrong. So it's a gas station and nobody looks forward to going to a gas station. That's not the owners fault. And they make most of their margin from the convenience store, not pennies per gallon. But they don't honour the posted specials for the convenience store - for example 2 drinks for $3, and the guy trys to tell me that because of CRV thst they're now $4.68 when he goes to ring it up. I asked him to check because of the posted special and he just threw my cash back at me and started pretending he no longer spoke English.. You get the picture. read more

I pumped gas here around 12:25pm today and had the worst encounter with an employee named Sanda. I got out of my vehicle to pump gas with 3 children inside. I am also 5 months pregnant. I had a dirty tissue which I used to wipe my hands from the greasy gas pump and tossed it in the nearest trash bin. Within seconds I was harassed my Sanda. She came up to me and yelled at me to get out of my car to remove the tissue from the trash because the "trash can was not ready". She had her arm about 1 inch from my face directing me to remove the trash. I walked over to the trash can and realized that the trash bag was not yet secured around the trash can. I can understand she is upset I put trash in her empty bin, but I am furious that she had to get up in my face for an issue so minor. She clearly does not respect her job or her customers. Being that my vehicle hit 10 years, I needed to take it to a "Test Only" site to get smogged. The owner Henry Le is efficient & multi-tasks in a manner I've never seen. As a one man operation, he lined up all the cars to be smogged and tested them each within less than 15 minutes. While I waited & on-viewed his work, all the cars passed the test. This place is a shell gas station that sells quality gas, that is the only good thing I can say about it. Took my suburban here on a Saturday afternoon for a smog to sell the vehicle. I did not ask how much they would charge me assuming it would be around whatever everyone else charges. I was wrong, $80, are you out of your mind! Several weeks later I went to fill up my new suburban with my fuel rewards card from Lucky groceries. Submitted the card in hoping to save 15 to 20 cents a gallon. well just so happened the pump I picked was out of order and wouldn't turn on. Went to the attendant to inform him the pump was out of order and get my discount on another pump. He said "Oh yeah I was too busy to put an out of order sign on pump and He cant do anything about the discount" He was too busy at 4:45 in the morning with no one else around. very poor excuse. So I filled up here a couple of months ago since has almost no gas left in my tank and it was the last stop 19th southbound where I could just hop in and out. I had a very weird experience here. I had a hard time working the machine. There are two awkwardly placed screens, one that you need to operate the pump, and another that barks up-to-the-minute news. It's like a TV, and it's kind of distracting. So by the time I got the pump to work, I was already late to work. And after the pump stopped, it literally jumped out of my car and spilled gas all over my jeans. I smelled like gasoline all day. I started coming here for Smog Check since July of 2013 (we were buying a minivan off our friend and selling 2 of our cars). I went to this place because I found a coupon from the Value Pak and it's only a few blocks from home. Howard, the owner, was great. I had to wait about an hour since there were 3 customers before me. When I told him I had a couple more cars for Smog Check, he told me to call ahead for appt. next time so that I don't have to wait. Yesterday I drove to the Shell Gas station at 19th Avenue & Taraval to purchase gas. A full tank of gas. I entered the store and asked the attendant to charge my debit card. He asked me why I didn't use the credit card station at the pump and I told him I didn't want to risk getting my card information skimmed. He seemed annoyed that my being there caused an interruption to his reading. He asked me for my I.D. and I promply produced my driver's license. He held onto my card and upon returning my driver's license, he let me know the pump station was now ready for use. I purchased just over $40 worth of gas to fill the tank. Upon my return, he produced a reciept for the amount purchased and gave me back my credit card. Off I went for my drive. This afternoon I checked the balance on my bank statement and noticed $100 had been debited for the gas I paid at the Shell station at 19th & Taraval. I immediately called my bank to alert them of a possible fraud purchase. The customer service representative said it was common practice for gas stations to charge as little as $1 or as much as $100 to ensure funds are available for purchases made using a debit card. Apparantly this is a common practice and I was equally shocked to learn that banks and merchants (like Shell Gas Station) allow the use of this practice. The customer service representative assured me that in 24hrs time, the correct amount will be reflected and my money returned to my account and that I "should not have anything to worry about." What the heck? Since when is it legal for merchants to take your money for products that i did not agree to purchase and further, was never delivered to me? There's something wrong here. The gas station attendant did not appear to know how to process my purchase was annoyed that his reading time was interrupted because of my purchasing gas. Lesson learned: I will never purchase gas from Shell Gas Station at 19th & Taraval and I will disuade anyone and everyone I know from patronizing this gas station. I will be checking my bank statement again in the morning. read more

This was my second use of 19th & Taraval. First was 2011 and he did a good job then, as he did today. I made a phone appointment today for same morning and rolled right into the shop when I got there. The price was actually lower this year than previous visit 2 years ago. He did the smog check, the certificate, and electronic transfer fee for $49.95. BE SURE TO MENTION YOU SAW HIM ON YELP FOR HIS DISCOUNT. I was in and out in 1/2 hour. I recommend this smog station. He is friendly and professional and really works fast to get you through. PS: I've read the Yelp reviews about this Shell station. Please realize that the smog test is an independent business from the gas station.
