    wonton soup
    Susan H.

We were in the area and looked for a place to have an early dinner. Thus, we came across Chen's 22 and agreed to give them a try. As expected, since it was early for dinner so we were the only dine-in customers there. The restaurant is on the small side, kind of long and narrow. We were greeted and seated by a friendly woman who also turned out to be our server. Interestingly, each table had a small bowl of duck sauce and a plate of crispy wide noodles on it. We had never seen that before. We started with soup. My husband and I had a cup of hot and sour soup while our son-in-law had wonton soup. The hot and sour soup had a generous amount of stock but didn't have any kick to it. Our son-in-law liked his wonton soup which had a generous amount of wontons. We used the crispy noodles in our soup. The restaurant has an extensive menu of Chinese items, as well as some Thai entrees plus sushi. We all had Chinese items. I had chicken with bok choy which consisted of small strips of white meat chicken which was on a bed of sauteed bok choy. This dish had a mild sauce and I enjoyed it as I hadn't had bok choy in sometime. My husband had chicken with garlic. He said the garlic flavoring came through very clearly. Our son-in-law had sweet and sour chicken. The chicken was fried and the sweet and sour sauce was served on the side. He, too, enjoyed his dinner. We were offered a complimentary pot of tea which we accepted. Our son-in-law got a soda. As our meal progressed, we realized that this restaurant is a true mom and pop business. Two young children (pre-school to elementary school age) sat in the restaurant and kept themselves occupied. At one point, their dad came out of the kitchen. Kudos to Mom and Dad for two very well behaved kids! We found the food to be A-OK. The portion sizes were generous and reasonably priced. Should we ever be in the area again, we would consider coming here to eat. They have their share of regular customers. While we were there, one came in for a take-out order.

    No fish at all.

Just picked up supposed roast pork lo Mein. No veggies, almost no pork, really just a box of $11 sautéed noodles. Will not be going back

We had to wait ~15 minutes for a table to open up before we were able to be seated despite having a reservation. There was a large (and disruptive) party next to us and it seemed like the place was understaffed as our server wasn't able to attend to us much and he seemed frazzled. For appetizers, we had the vegetable gyozas and fried wontons. Both were pretty unimpressive and I wouldn't order them again. I ordered the tempura udon for my entrée which came with a bowl of miso soup which was pretty good. One of my friends got the D.E. warrior roll which was quite pricey (~$30) and was chewy since all the meat was cooked. My udon was decent and came with two shrimp tempuras and two broccoli tempura as well. However, I wasn't a fan of the spinach that came inside the soup. Overall, we had a satisfactory time at Akai but we don't think we would return.

Makes sense, as the restaurant is small and it gets crowded especially on weekends. The restaurant is family run and very friendly. We tried a few rolls and everything was nice and tasty. I saw a sign that they offer omakase on certain days, and would love to try that next time.

While it's not quite on the level of New York City's omakase spots, it's solid for New Jersey and worth a visit if you're in the area. Standout bites for me were the Otoro and Chu Toro- both beautifully fatty and flavorful - as well as the Hamachi with shishito and the scallop topped with crispy garlic. Other highlights included the Madai (seabream), barracuda, striped jack, and a satisfying bone marrow served with toast. I also tried Kumamoto oysters for the first time in years, and they were a lovely surprise-cleaned properly, topped with a light sauce, and incredibly fresh. The Hokkaido uni was creamy, though slightly more briny and bitter than I personally prefer. Mr. Bin himself mentioned that uni flavor can vary depending on the season. Throughout the meal, Mr. Bin was present and helpful, guiding us toward which fish to try. The fish is delivered fresh twice a week, and the quality really does show. That said, it's still missing that little extra something that sets top-tier omakase apart- the purposeful dot of yuzu sauce, the hidden dab of wasabi under the fish, or a crisp garnish that adds dimension and surprise. Some sushi have this, some don't. The technique is good, the fish is fresh, and the experience was enjoyable- I'd return- but it's a notch below the more elevated experiences you can find in the city. Hence 4 stars. Solid though, and friendly. Nice ambiance inside too, Saturday dinner time it filled up quickly so I recommend a reservation.

It was my first time doing karaoke and I honestly don't know that I would do it again. We booked a karaoke room for an hour for 6 people on a Thursday evening, and while the singing was fun, the service was below subpar. When we arrived, we did not have a full menu available to us in the room, so it took a few mins to get our order in. Our server kept close tabs of every minute in karaoke, but not the food. It took over 60 minutes to get our wings! Apparently there was some sort of mix up in the kitchen & while we were understanding, what threw us for a loop was that even though our wings were DELAYED, our server was hesitant to offer complimentary time in our karaoke room while we waited. Right at the 60-minute mark, he was quick to offer two options - our wings to go or a table in the dining room. In the end, we had to negotiate an extra hour in the karaoke room since our food took SO long to come out. When paying the check, we were surprised to see a charge for food we never ever received! I'm super disappointed that they tried to take advantage of us, when we were very understanding of their mix up. In my opinion, servers could use a lesson or two in customer service. Never in my time in hospitality, have I ever behaved in the way they did.

I dared to try the cauliflower wings (half & half), which actually wasn't bad. Both flavors was good, although I personally like the spicy better (just make sure you can handle it, although it won't be too bad if you're used to spicy food). Garlic fried rice was okay, but not the best. Also seems like they don't give you a side of pickled radish at this point, but maybe that's because we're in Jersey. Also the kimchi fries weren't what I expected. What the fries were crispy and tasty, they just give you a tiny cup of kimchi cheese sauce. Maybe I'm spoiled, but I expected the fries to be way more loaded. I ordered for pickup and it did take a lot longer than expected. I also felt sorry for the hostess, who was running around trying to help. There also was 5 people just standing around chatting, but the music was just a tad too loud to hear anyone trying to get their attention. I'm sure dining in would be a chill vibe, but can still have that and have it all together yk? Last thing is I definitely asked for bacon mustard sauce and heard them confirm over the phone, a bit annoyed they forgot that!
