I have not been to Kampo Garden in quite some time so I decided to stop in again recently. My last…read morereview gave this place a less than stellar rating but after my most recent experience I'm going to bump it up by a star. The interior of Kampo has changed a bit since my last visit. One side that used to have tables has been walled off as a storage area. The tables on the other side now have diner style booth seating. There are some seats towards the front for those waiting for orders to sit on. One of them felt like it was going to collapse when I sat on it so I switched seats. Be warned. My order was ready very quickly and the gent behind the counter was very nice. Sadly we did not speak the same dialect of Chinese so we muddled through with English. I wound up ordering two dishes: MIXED VEGETABLES IN GARLIC SAUCE This was a well done dish. Most of the veg was broccoli, which I'm more than okay with. There was also some Bok Choi and carrot in the mix. The garlic sauce was tasty and this made for a great dish to eat over rice. The vegetables were also cooked well. They still had some bite, but were not underdone. GENERAL TSO'S CHICKEN Keep in mind I took this to go so the dish had some time to steam in the packaging and wound up losing some of its characteristic crispiness so I did not get what you may call the "full" experience of this dish. Still, I enjoyed it! I'd say in the pantheon of various versions of this dish I've had in my time this rates at about a B-. The flavor was good, the chicken chunks were nicely breaded and they were a good size. The sauce was tasty and had a bed of broccoli underneath. I do wish there had been some spicy peppers thrown in for a bit of heat but not all restaurants do that unfortunately. Overall Kampo did well on this visit and I'd definitely consider visiting them again in the future.

For a variety of reasons once 2010 or so rolled around I stopped getting take out from Red Apple. Recently I wanted to grab some food for dinner so I got off my bus before my stop to grab some food. This is not a sit down restaurant. You go in and order your take out, sit on a chair to wait and then head out with your food. The place looks very much the same as it did over ten years ago but they added a Hibachi extension next door. When I look back at my older review, I really feel that I should have given it 4 stars, but Yelp ratings were a tad different back then if I recall correctly. I have to say that after all this time I am very sad to give it such a low rating now. I am very sure at this point that the owners of this place are not the same ones from years ago (at the very least the chef is different). I picked up three dishes and well...read on... SHRIMP TOAST This is a Chinese take-out classic that I remember having back in New York City from several Chinese places so I've had this dish a *lot* in my time. Usually you want it to be crispy but light with a nice chew on the inside where the shrimp paste is sandwiched between two pieces of bread. For the most part they did an okay job here but the toast was fried too long. Much of the outside ranged from black to dark brown when it should really be golden brown. The flavor was good but if it had not been overcooked it would have been better. COLD SESAME NOODLES This is one of my favorite dishes from Chinese take-out places. However, it is hard to find a place that does it *well*. Even when it is only "okay" however, it has some commonalities. Usually there are egg noodles with some type of peanut or sesame based sauce, scallion and sesame seeds. Some places also add hot sauce to give it some extra kick. What Red Apple gave me was...not this. Oddly, I"m not sure *what* they gave me. The noodles were warm, the topping was a vegetable medley with...onions? There was no sesame or peanut sauce. Really, the whole dish just tasted like a light veggie lo mein which was *bizarre* and not at all what I ordered. GENERAL TSAO'S TOFU This was one of my favorite dishes from this place so I was excited to have it again. Then I saw it and I knew something was wrong. Most General Tsao's dishes should have fried chunks of something (chicken, tofu etc.) with a thick red sauce that caramelizes around the edges. The sauce should have some sweet and savory elements (and ideally a tad of spice via peppers). What I got? Was...not that. The tofu chunks were in a runny, thin sauce that tasted *terrible*. It just tasted like sugary sauce with a pile of salt on it. It was so terrible I wound up eating a few bites and tossing the rest. I'm so sad to be writing this review. I really had hoped this update would be a 4* celebration of a place I used to go to but I think I'll be staying away for a while.

So last Thursday I finally stop by. The lady at the front counter was very nice, speak English, I ordered the Sesame Chicken with Fried Rice, it was pretty good, chicken not over cook like most places, very happy with the result Friday I went there again because I like the Sesame Chicken so much. But this time, the lady not there, a nasty looking guy was at the front counter So I thought, he's not the cook, should be okay. I placed my ordered to go. I was standing at the front counter the entire time watching the kitchen staffs cooking my food. This nasty guy cook the fried rice, and I assuming one of the fried rice he cooked, got something in the rice, he used is nasty fingers and picked out whatever it is, and later he came out, I look at his fingers, he is one of those let his nasty finger nails grown, and black stuff under it. Ew..... I kept looking and luckily, that wasn't my fried rice, it was someone else. Later he went to the back, he took a bite of the watermelon and leave it in the back counter and used his shirt to clean his hand after he took a bite of the watermelon Later, the phone ring, and someone trying to place an order, he was very rule telling the customer on the phone saying. "IF you want to order two, just say two, don't say three" Now, this guy have no problem with his English, which is unusual, because as you all and I knew, most people picking up the phone can't even say "Chinese Food" You know I'm right. lol So the way he told his customer over the phone "don't say three" is just very rude, he lucky he was talking to someone nicer then me, or it will be some ass kicking I will not be back for sure because of this nasty ass guy there, I don't want his fingers in my food. NO WAY!!

My family and I are New York ex-pats now living in New Jersey. We love Chinese food but haven't been able to find a place that comes close to the watered down americanized version of sezchuan chinese food we have grown to love. But this restaurant really comes close!! Here is the good: 1. The sesame chicken and general tso chicken were crispy and really tasty! 2. The general tso chicken was flavored nicely with a mild heat. 3. Large portions that 2 people can share. 4. They give you 2 free cans of soda if you order over 20 dollars 5. Food was cooked really quickly (even for Chinese food) Here is the bad: 1. They do not take credit cards :( 2. The egg rolls were greasy (but still tasty, lol crazy I know!) 3. The rice was a little bland and not as fluffy as we are used to but my daughter liked the rice when mixed with the chicken. Overall I gave it 4 stars because it is a great little local chinese place that offers tasty food at a great price even if it has a few shortcomings.
