We were out of town and as usual, used Yelp to find a good restaurant to get a great takeout meal. We found this place and Yelp (as well as Cheng Du) did not disappoint. We ordered pork fried rice, special wok made dishes and their chef special lightly fried shrimp with garlic sauce and dry noodles. Everything was very good and had great taste, especially the shrimp dish. The wok sautéed items were cooked to perfection but could have used a bit more seasoning. Nothing bad, we just like robustness of flavor. The rice was some of the best we have had in awhile. When we are in the area, we will definitely be back to order different dishes since we were very happy with our meals and portions. I came here alone for Friday lunch and to my surprise this place was completely packed. It took about 30 minutes for me to get seated and for my food to arrive. It took another 15 minutes for me to pay the bill. I eventually just walked up to the counter with my bill to pay my bill because this whole dining experience took way too long for my 1 hour lunch break even though there were three servers. The saving grace of this restaurant is the food. It's seriously delicious. if you have 1+ hour to dinning, I sincerely recommend you try this place out. I order the dry hot pot shrimp and it came with mushrooms, lotus roots, mung roots, 10 shrimps , and some parsley for garnish. It's an eight level spice and for me that was perfect! We love this place but sadly live over 30 minutes away. It's by far our favorite restaurant for authentic Sichuan food in the Philly suburbs though. Our go-to's are the Fish - Hot Sauce Style (water boiled fish) and the Mushrooms - Hot Pot Style (dry pot). The prices are very reasonable for the portions too. It's probably not the best ambiance if you're looking for that wow factor but the quality of the food more than make up for that. Stopped in last night to get takeout. Second time here. The food is good as usual. However I found a sliver from a can that was opened and they dropped in in my Singapore rice noodles. I thought it was a thick black hair. My wife picked it up and upon examination it was a piece of steel from opening a can. Gotten takeout a few more times (including twice in the past week) and the quality of flavors here is consistently great. The beef chow fun is one of the better versions I've had anywhere, with very tender beef and perfectly cooked noodles. The eggplant in garlic sauce is packed with flavor. And the garlic sauce pork continues to impress. Even the wonton & dumpling dishes have been really good. Quality is clearly a cut above other Chinese spots and the authenticity is real. My last experience with Ping Pong left me disappointed. Where would I eat Sichuan now??? Would I have to go all the way to Chinatown to ease my craving for pork Hot Pot? And then Cheng Du happened! We tried the Sesame Cold Noodles, Pork hot pot, Dry chili pepper fish, Dan Dan, Pickled Prawn. Each dish was so flavorful! Perfectly seasoned and so much better than I remember Ping Pong's flavors to be. Even the rice was so tasty..This is the family's favorite place now. Only downside is that there's not enough room as Ping Pong so there's a bit of a wait if you're visiting during peak hours. But so so so worth the wait!! Very authentic and delicious Sichuan food. We drive 40 minutes both ways at least once a month to get the Hot and Spicy Mixed Stew, it's that good. Not too spicy, lots of different meat and vegetables, and great flavor that makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The restaurant is never too crowded when we go and they have had a very convenient and safe takeout setup during the pandemic. The staff are polite and don't bother us often while eating, but are very quick to respond when we ask for more tea or rice. A lot of the negative reviews are from people ordering Chinese-American cuisine at a restaurant that specializes in Sichuan cuisine lol. Sichuan is a province of China and the food in this region is very spicy, so don't be surprised if your dish is spicy. I would recommend branching out from your typical orders and trying the authentic Sichuan dishes offered because they are great and you might find a new favorite while experiencing another culture. read more

Wish I could give this restaurant a no star review. My husband and I both shared the same take-out meal last night: egg drop soup, Dan Dan noodles, triple seafood feast. The soup had absolutely no flavor whatsoever very glutinous nd ended up down the sink. The Dan Dan noodles or over cooked and even with the spice rating very spicy. The triple seafood feast was just edible. To make matters worse today my husband and I have very leaky plumbing and I ended up with my head in the toilet bowl about mid morning. My husband and I were very disappointed but trust me we will be searching for another Asian takeout. Too bad the Hong Garden in Paoli did not make a come back. They are missed by many. read more

My wife and I were here for lunch earlier today and we enjoyed our dining experience. We had recently been to another restaurant serving Schezuan restaurant in the area (Pin Wei) and were unpleasantly surprised at the sheer spiciness of their food, so we were a lot more careful here. That caution may have been unwarranted because we went up to items marked 8 on the spice level (varies from 1-10) and could handle even those items reasonably well. But more on that later. The other comment besides our caution was the large number of Asian patrons coming to the restaurant. If one seeks Asian folks frequenting an Asian restaurant as a marker for authenticity, Cheng Du certainly met that test and with flying colors. Back to the food. This is what we ordered for the two of us: a scallion pancake for appetizers, and sichuan style chicken lo mein, pork with chilli green peppers, and hot pot style shrimp for our main course. The scallion pancakes were not impressive but one nice feature was that it had been cut up making it a bit more convenient to eat. All three items that we ordered for our main course were enjoyable. The pork with chilli green peppers was a 6 on the spice level and the lo mein was 5 and for both items, I found it best to add a sprinkling of their chili oil. The hot pot style shrimp at 8 was at the spice level I expect of Schezuan food and manageable for both of us. Besides the shrimp, there was a fair amount of veggies in it, which my wife always enjoys. In terms of portion size, what we got was too much food for the two of us and we took home about half the noodles and the hot pot shrimp even though we were both fairly hungry as we came in to the restaurant. Service was fine without being exceptional. We requested forks as we aren't quite proficient in the use of chopsticks. We were also served a pot of hot tea as we entered and on a cold January afternoon, that is always welcome. Bottomline is that we enjoyed our dining experience and if we were in the area, we would certainly consider coming back here again. read more

Staying overnight in the Berwyn area and was in the mood for some really good Chinese food. The reviews lead me to Cheng Du and it didn't disappoint. This isn't your typical run of the mill Chinese joint. They have a REALLY authentic and diverse menu with lots of different and unique menu items. The spicy wontons in chili oil called my name and I was glad I listened because they were DELISH!!!! The wontons were thin which I LOVED and the chili oil packed the right amount of heat! I couldn't make up my mind about the entree and was afraid of stepping out too far on a limb and spice level (the menu has every item's spice level indicated by a number) so I went with the seafood delight which had shrimp, fish, crab and veggies in a white sauce. Although it was a safe bet it was a YUMMY one too! I scraped the plate! Oh, and they serve you your own personal pot of green tea to enjoy throughout your meal. The only reason I didn't go with five stars was because the service was mediocre....perhaps because I was a table of 1 that wasn't going to order a hundred dollars worth of food. I was so, so excited to try this place after hearing such great reviews. However, after the experience yesterday, I will not be going back. Orders took a very long time with no estimated time given. When I called to ask about it, the woman was very rude. I simply wanted to know how much longer to wait after 1/2 hour. I got four entrees and all of them tasted bland and flavorless. We came to this restaurant upon the recommendation of the same person that suggested we go to R&G's Ping Pong. When I told her about my awful experience at Ping Pong's she told me her family didn't go there anymore because the quality had gone downhill. Instead she goes to Cheng Du's. Go figure. What a complete 180º experience from Ping Pong's! I'm salivating just remembering. The portions are good. Flavors spot on. Prices affordable. This isn't your average Chinese restaurant. This is authentic Chinese food. If you are looking for Sweet and Sour Chicken with Pineapple Chunks you are in the wrong place. I honestly hesitate to recommend this place for fear they will get too busy, but, they deserve kudos for their great food. Suggestion: please improve your website so people can see your menu better. Wait staff and owner are very attentive and will provide advice if asked on menu selection. Owners (husband wife team) were at the nearby Ping Pong. I have not been there since and same for Pin Wei in KOP. I highly recommend Chengdu. Came here for a lunch celebration for Chinese New Year and Cheng Du did not disappoint! Definitely the best Szechuan restaurant I've been to! The chicken with pepper, sparerib in garlic stir fry, beef and onion, and onion were our favorite. The whole red snapper was also delicious and sitting in a chili sauce. Very flavorful and surprisingly not that spicy! We started with the scallion pancakes which were delicious. The Dan dan noodles at level 6 were very spicy for me and I have a more mild tolerance for heat. The fried shrimp was also cooked perfectly. Food from Cheng Du was practically inedible. I ordered a scallion pancake, egg drop soup and steamed dumplings. The scallion pancake was undercooked and lacked flavor - it was white and flaccid and world's away from the crispy and golden version that I'm used to eating. The egg drop soup was also seriously lacking in flavor (I actually had to salt it, which was a first in my many years of ordering this soup) and tasted strongly of chlorine. It seemed that the soup was made with unfiltered tap water which rendered it inedible - it was literally poured down the sink after a few bites. The soup came alone and wasn't accompanied by the crispy wontons that usually accompany a soup order, which was disappointing considering that an order of soup is over $5.00 which is a bit pricey when compared to other Chinese takeout places. The dumplings also tasted vaguely of tap water but it was easier to mask with the dipping sauce however their insides were an off-putting gray paste. Please give your business to the other local Chinese restaurants. This one should be avoided at all costs. read more

You need to eat this with white rice cause it'll cool the spice down and it's a great mix of textures, they go hand in hand with complementing each other. Beef in chili oil - basically the same thing what everything is drenched in again...but with a beef that's super tender and flavorful Potato noodle with intestine - a clear potato noodle that has pig intestine in a Sichuan pepper sauce pool, enough to drown a man in haha... As you can tell there is a common trend...everything being drenched in hot Sichuan pepper chili oil Place could use a touch up with more decorations as it's pretty plain in there, but that's the only thing id say needs improvement. I'm sure they also have non spicy food, but I got: Spring rolls (yuck - mushy and maybe premade) Quarrelsome beef - good, but bathed and dripping in pepper sauce. It's days later and I can still feel it. The meat was room temperature and much of it non standard for Americans. I know there was tripe, but also a bunch others I would normally not try. We had a yen for Chinese food and of course I went to yelp for reviews. We saw that Cheng Du was the new restaurant opening at the old Le Saigon location. Since Le Saigon was an okay spot, we figured we'd give it a try, and the reviews were generally favorable. We ordered Wonton Soup Scallion Pancakes General Tso Shrimp Pork Fried Rice. and we figured what could go wrong.............. Well maybe I should have thought harder when I asked the girl taking our order if they used MSG and she said they didn't have to add it................... But we were hungry . The scallion pancakes were lightly fried and flaky. Not many scallions, but when dipped in the sauce it came with were tasty. The amount of meat in the Think skinned wonton was hard to find. The soup was okay, but overall I'll not get this again. The pork fried rice was just okay. Not what we expected, but edible. The general Tso's Shrimp--------------skip it. We can't decide if the shrimp had been frozen and got freezer burn, or they just over cooked it. Since my husband got an upset stomach later that night we agreed to toss the left over shrimp.
