I had'nt eaten here in about 11 years. Since I was visiting a friend in the area and I was on my way home and hungry I remembered this place and decided to stop and take some take out home. Upon entry I noticed the dining area had seen some better days and the entire restaurant needs a serious overhaul. Overall it just didnt seem very clean. I looked at the menu and food prices were very reasonable. I noticed the woman who took my order was the same woman who served me 11 years ago!! LOL She must own the place? I remember having some of the best egg rolls here and decided Id order two. I also order thier chicken lunch special with came with a sauce and vegetables and requested if they could make me fried rice instead of the steamed. Take out was very reasonable at $16 total. I got home and was so hungry i opened my container and noticed the "old tired looking broccholi and vegetables". The chicken tasted boiled and slimey. The fried rice was just the steamed riced thrown into a wok and squished around. The egg rolls were not anything like i remembered. BEST Crab Puffs Ever- Super crispy and triple stuffed! Eggrolls are also super crispy, stuffed and bursting with flavor. Made from scratch and made to order! The egg fried rice was so delicious and quickly went. Their chicken breast Lemon chicken is out of this world, a definite must. (Insider Secret: The chicken breast upgrade is totally worth it and so minimal. Also get the lemon sauce on the side so when you get home it's still super crispy and you can pour as little or as much as you want. Full disclosure: I used to eat here as a kid. But I hadn't had it again until recently. So whether it's the tru tru or just my nostalgia, I think 'ol Chen & Wok is the best in Phoenix (no comment on the East Valley, I hear sh*t's HOT out there). And, I've come to realize it's pretty much been the benchmark against which I've measured all (American) Chinese food my whole life. So, where to start? All the food is FLAVORFUL. That should be a given at any restaurant, but a lot of Chinese spots in 602 suffer from blandness--all the dishes are covered in a mediocre gravy. Here, each dish--and Chen's got all the classics--is uniquely flavorful. I personally love the house chicken. It's just super savory, smothered in fresh green onions, garlic, and a deep, heavy brown sauce that's addictively salty with just the perfect hint of anise, which I generally hate but love here. The chicken is deep-fried, and the crust kinda melts in the sauce before you get a chance to appreciate any crispiness, but I actually think that works overall. The veggie lo mein is also astounding. Super salty and flavorful, but also kinda light. It's got all the minimally necessary vegetables (cabbage, carrots, broccoli, finely diced water chestnuts, green onion, and a F*CK TON of garlic). The cashew chicken, Mongolian beef, and Kung Pao are also really solid. The plain "egg fried rice" and egg rolls are correct af. My favorite, though, is the pepper beef. The sauce is, once again, super, super savory and garlicky, but remains surprisingly light. Though the beef is probably chemically tenderized, that's classic, and I can't get enough. Finally, the crab puffs. While, like virtually everywhere but Pei Wei, they're mostly just cream cheese with de minimis pollack, I like these the best. They'e shaped like little sacks, so you get more cream cheese than average (mmmmmmmm, cream cheese). And the wonton itself crisps up with lil bubbles where others are just smooth and slick with grease. Okay, enough. This place wins. It's also REALLY reasonably priced. So, in the end, this place is THE quintessential Chinese delivery spot in my opinion. read more

My family has been going to this restaurant for over 30 years. In the last two years the service and food has really gone down hill. I have waited to post a review because I was sure that things would eventually get better. For the third time we have not gotten our full order. It seems that there is always something missing. When I called this time the lady told me that I didn't order what I said was missing. Because of all the problems I've had with them I marked off everything on my list as I told them to make sure that I got everything. I told her that. A friend and I ordered from here yesterday. We were super disappointed. I ordered the garlic shrimp and chicken dish which was loaded up with some weird yellow vegetable. The Yui Shan Spicy chicken dish wasn't spicy. To be honest, the only reason I could differentiate between the Yui Shan dish and the shrimp and garlic was because one order had shrimp in it. . . They literally tasted the same. All of the food was bland and boring. It was a complete waste of $50. The orange chicken dish was soggy. And the white rice isn't "sticky rice." No onions or green peppers, or pineapple. Not every place uses pineapple, but no onion or green pepper? It was Just pieces of pork with red sauce on it. That's it. I guess a slice of onion or pepper would have added a nickel or dime to the restaurant's cost. The pork itself was ok, but again, it could've been better. Some of the pieces were more gristle than meat. Also the lunch combos don't come with an egg roll. It's just the entree and white rice. I paid extra for egg fried rice. It was pretty good. I wish i had pictures but this is one of my favorite chinese restaurants in the valley and for sure my favorite within north-central phoenix (my neighborhood). My go to options include teriyaki chicken, sweet and sour pork, orange chicken, fried rice and crab puffs. Don't ever skip the crab puffs. Egg rolls are also great. Some says that their flavor has decreased? --pls tell it to the owner or the chef, it will help with patrons like us, or new comers.
