Called in a to-go order around 2 p.m. on a Saturday. It included a large order of queso. When I went to pick up the order, they hadn't yet made it, so I ended up waiting 20 minutes for my food. When I finally got my food and got back to the car, I realized that there were no chips in the bag. I went back in, waited in line again, and finally got up to the counter. I explained that I just ordered chips and queso, but that I didn't get chips. The cashier told me that "chips come separately." Really? Since when? What am I supposed to eat my queso with, a spoon? I can understand restaurants charging for chips and salsa, but I actually ordered something that REQUIRES chips to eat it and typically comes as a unit. Anyway, I said "that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, may I please speak to the manager?" At which she said that she WAS the manager. "OK then, how much for an order of chips?" I asked. "75 cents," she replied. I checked my pockets and realized that I didn't have any cash, so I handed her my credit card. "Five dollar minimum credit card charge," she said. "would you like to order something else?" I was a bit taken aback and replied , "Well, I just spent nine bucks, can't you make an exception and either run the card for 75 cents or just give me the chips? I live around the corner and come here all the time." She flatly said "no." I said "I gave a $2 tip on the $9 carryout order, can you just take the 75 cents out of that." She shook her head and said "sorry." So I stormed out, went to the convenience store next door, and bought a bag of chips. Now, I don't have a problem paying for goods or services. But if they're going to sell something separately that normally comes together they should at least ask if you want to buy the other item. When I placed my order, the person on the other end of the line didn't ask "do you want chips with that queso?" Better still, just raise the price of the queso by 75 cents and include the damn chips. Needless to say, I will not be going back. It's not like there aren't 100 Mexican restaurants within a mile of this joint. How they can afford to alienate customers like that, is totally beyond me. They basically threw away a customer over a hand full of corn chips. The food was mediocre anyway, the ONLY thing this place had going for it was proximity. Oh well, their loss. I suspect that they survive on the lunch crowd from the Honda dealership across the street. It will be interesting to see how long Checko's lasts after the dealership moves later this year. read more

This place is pretty good food wise. A little greasy for my taste on some items by I tend to stick to nachos and what not. The service is ok, besides me feeling like sometimes they rush. I like to call in pick up here and one time my car broke down on the side of the street on the way there. I order a very cheap nacho plate and called to cancel and apologize as I was stuck on the side of the road. A younger female waitress, who I see there quite often, continued to tell me in an aggressive and angry voice that now she had to pay for my $4-$5 plate and that I should never ever call or come there again. I proceeded to tell her I was sorry and that I could come by later to pay for the meal once my husband was home. She proceeded to scoff at me and tell me "trust me you don't want to come back here." And then hung up on me. I kind of took it as a threat and haven't ordered in my name since then, or gone in. Which is unfortunate because we use to come here multiple times a week. I tried calling back to speak to a manager at the time but she still had the phone and hung up on me twice. read more

This place use to be my go to spot. Recently there was hair in my food,and salsa. The waitress was making me a michelada and as she was stiring it she was using a spoon. She then tasted it and stuck the spoon back in the cup. I was disgusted. read more

Breakfast tacos are okay and Horchata is delicious. Their queso is gritty because it is powdered cheese.

It is not perfect but I have to give Checko's a 5 star. I live walking distance from the restaurant and have had almost everything on the menu. The quality ranges from above average to un-be-freaking-lievably awesome. This is coming from someone who grew up in SoCal and knows good mexican food. My personal favorite is the Bistec a la Mexicana. Oh. My. God. Most people have never heard of this dish, but it's sort of a beef stirfry with onions, tomatoes, and jalapenos. You dish it into the best corn tortillas ever and go straight to heaven. Other favorites are the fajitas and chile relleno. They give you a freaking mound of fajita for $8. Unreal. The breakfast tacos are hands down the best I've ever had. I don't know what they do to make them so good because it's just normal ingredients. Just go check it out. And all this good food is offered at bargain prices. Literally half as much as some other places with inferior food. The one knock is that the service is not excellent. It used to be horrible but has improved over time. They are definately not rude, just slow and sometimes forgetful. I am willing to overlook that for awesome food at low prices. And if you want spice, ask for the green salsa. read more

We've started eating here so often. The food is very fresh and flavorful. Come early if you want the blackboard specials, like chili rellenos, 'cause when they run out for the day they are done. The barbacoa is AMAZING-try the barbacoa tostada with cilantro, onion, and the super-hot green sauce. Yum yum yum. I used to go there a lot for breakfast tacos,omelets, and taco salads,the food was never spectacular, but not bad either and they are really cheap, so today was the first time in probably three years I came in for breakfast, ordered an omelet (you pick too ingredients) I asked for ham and bell peppers,the meal used to come with re fried beans, potatoes, and tortillas so first the waitress tells me they don't offer the tortilla anymore. and asked me if I wanted to order some (which was a bummer,but at least she offered.) Then the food came. it was a slimy, two egg ?? omelet filled with "pressed" ham sandwich meat and hard bell peppers and nothing else just sitting there swimming in grease and red stuff. no potatoes, no beans, and old tasting tea I was so disappointed, and already feel a bit nauseous. exactly why I ate it is beyond me I should have gone with my first instinct and sent it back read more

Great place. I used to live in SA and was spoiled with homemade flour tortillas: they do not have these BUT they do have homemade corn tortillas that rock! Also, they have awesome breakfast tacos and the Cubana sandwich is awesome and cheap! My stepson loves the Tampiquena - which is two enchiladas with a huge skirt steak on it for only $7.00! Three of us eating lots of food and drinks (non-alcoholic) got out of there spending less than $30.00. If we had a comparable meal at Chuys - we would have easily spend $50 - definitely a bargain - consistently good - and the owners care about their food! read more

The food is good here but we recently had a terrible experience with their service. My husband and I went there for breakfast on a Saturday. We ordered some breakfast tacos and coffee. The coffee arrived fine but after half an hour, no tacos. The manager came over and said they were coming right out. Ten more minutes - and lots of food going to other tables - and still no tacos for us. More time went by and lots of tables with people who came in after us have their tacos, but no tacos for us. Finally we left and went to Jeffe's instead and their tacos were delicious. If anyone had explained why our tacos wre delayed, or had offered us a free snack while we waited, or offered to comp future tacos, I'd have nothing but good things to say, but they did none of that. Absolutely unbeatable happy hour. Does any other place in town have Dos XX pints for a buck? That's actually cheaper than buying it at the grocery store. The food is pretty good, not the best I've had but not the worst either. You can get two meals and six beers for less than $20, and for that I'm willing to eat the occasional stale chip. I do wish they'd get rid of the plastic pint glasses, though. read more

I have been trying to find a good Mexican restaurant that served good enchiladas. I finally found it, I'm huge fan of chicken mole enchiladas!! I decided to try the mole it was just right not to spicy or sweet and not to runny it was just perfect. I can finally enjoy a good mole plate for a low price. My husband had the "parrillada plate" the fijita meat was great too, and they make their own corn tortillas. Huge fan of corn tortillas. This hidden restaurant was way cleaner than the others i have been to in the neighborhood, also their staff is way nicer too. Oh by the way they also have wireless internet I thouth that was different. I was also able to meet the owners they are very nice folks. Over all their food is the traditional mexican food, they serve "aguas frescas", beer and margaritas yumm!! I will be stopping this place more often. read more

Me and my partner go to Checkos very regularly. Dona Minerva is super friendly and accomodating. This is the only place in town where my partner can get his potatos "tostadas y negritas" like he likes them. Always a special order Dona Minerva is happy to get for us. The food is good and tasty and we always feel welcome there. We live in the neighborhood so we feel at home every time we go. Great food options and nice price. Great tortillas and salsa picante. We've been going here regularly since moving into the neighborhood about a year ago. Above average food, below average prices-- what's not to like? I have run several restaurants over the years, and Cheko's achieves what is one of the hardest things-- consistency. You very, very seldom get a below average meal, it's almost always good, fresh Mexican food. Friendly, family atmosphere, the owners are usually there and many of the staff are related to them one way or another. I think that's one of the reasons it is consistently good. read more

Great enchiladas and the happy hour special with $1.50 Dos Equis can't be beat! We run into many of our Brentwood/Crestview neighbors there and it's always a fun atmosphere. Love love love this place. They have the best mole in Austin. I have lived in Austin for over 25 years and have tried the mole at every Mexican restaurant I go to. None compare to Checkos. Also, their green sauce is very similar to Taco Deli's La Dona sauce. Sooo sooo good. read more

Well, what can I say...This place rocks!! Since becoming Cheko's, it is still compared to the last restaurant that was in the same building, but it truly is not. It has a new owner along with, the exception of the two morning waitresses, an entire new staff and cooks. The place is much cleaner and brighter. Although to me, the jukebox is an eye sore, the place still wins me over with the other important qualities it carries. I've gone to eat at Cheko's several times during breakfast and dinner. So far every plate that I've ordered has been rich of flavor and aroma. For instance, the Barbacoa: it is out of this world!! I've yet to taste Barbacoa this good anywhere else. The Tortilla Soup is also fantastic and flavorful! ( I have to have the shredded cheese removed though, due to my lactose issues). The corn tortillas, I'm not sure if they're made at the restaurant, but they sure taste like they're homemade! I've also had the Mojarra Frita: It's a fried Tilapia served with rice and french fries. At first, I was expecting to see a Tilapia filet on my plate, but when I saw the whole fish (head and tail), I was taken back a little. That feeling soon disappeared after the first bite of my Tilapia! And as prices go...I am amazed to see through the menu, that everything Cheko's serves (which happens to be a great amount of choices) is at an extremely reasonanable price. (The Shrimp Parrillada being the highest priced @ $10.50 a plate!) I really enjoy this place...and everytime I go, I tend to see a lot of the same faces eating at Cheko's as well. This is the absolute worst! Our server didn't want to be there and he made that very evident. He was rude and never once checked on our table! When we asked for straws it appeared to be an issue that we had the nerve to even ask. He never asked how the meal was, we didn't get one refill on our drinks. Two feet from where my husband was trying to eating he was ringing out a dirty mop. I watched him take trash out and mop and never once did he wash his hands! For the first time ever I didn't leave any tip at all. We will never be back and we will make sure our friends in this neighborhood are aware of what they can expect if they go there! read more

We have been going to this place for years and the service has never been good but after last night, I am done. They have a rule that you cannot have pastor on a small corn quesadilla. I don't know why they have this rule. Last night I asked if I could have pastor on the big flour quesadilla. I was told that that was against the rules but I could have it on a small quesadilla. Perfect! I said great. My son got his meal and I waited. When he was almost done the waitress came over and said she had bad news. I could not have pastor on a quesadilla of any kind. I said it was simple. Place the pastor in a corn tortilla, put some cheese on it and grill it. She said no. I might have been more gracious if there were more than three other customers in the place or if they told me before my son was almost through with his meal. I told her, either make the quesadilla or we will go to Aranda's from now on." She said, "I am trying to be patient with you." We left, never to return. read more
