Still like this place, but wanted to update: The mexican martini & cheese enchilada were not very good, but the carne guisada made up for that. Very tasty and the sauce was awesome. My partner again had the barbacoa tacos, same result, his favorite. He also loved the carne guisada, he ate more of my dinner than I. While he was finishing my plate, I waited in line to pay (they should really let you pay at your table). The price for all of the above was only $19 (before tip). Excellent value! read more

The food is cheap and never disappoints. It's not the best but it's perfect with a nice drink to get past the edge of a long workweek. Never crowded or too loud. Happy hour is from 3-10 pm with karaoke starting at 8 pm. I've been there several times and have enjoyed and come to look forward to the sweet WWII vet who kicks off karaoke with his rendition of Nick Villarreal's Hey Baby, Que Paso. I didn't have problems with the service like it seems previous Yelpers have. I enjoyed the chips and salsa, the margaritas were refreshing and reasonably priced (I think around $3.50), and the chicken fajita burrito was tasty. I didn't care for their "no substitutions" policy. I tried to substitute queso for red sauce and they said they could only do it if I'd buy a side of queso for over $3. I managed without either. The rice and beans were super tasty. I especially liked the rice. I've heard lots of great things about their breakfast tacos, but I haven't had a chance to taste them. Salsa is awesome here! The food is ok but everything on the menu is really pretty cheap so it's worth it. The service it good sometimes. I don't like how they have a tip jar. I would rather just tip the person who was helping us according to how good or bad of a job they do serving us. read more

Price/performance nobody in town touches this place. They are really solid. Great Tex-Mex and some "interior" dishes. Ask for green salsa, it slams (is good). It reminds me of taco truck type food in a sit down format. Would've given it 5 stars but they won't do ANY substitutions (like a soft instead of crispy taco when the plates are the same price). Chekos is one of my favorite Mexican joints in town. It's a relaxed place to grab a margarita with a friend and I've always received great service. Warning, Saturday night is karaoke night. If you don't want to be in a small, crowded restaurant with blaring karaoke in spanish, this is the time to avoid. Food isn't high end, but is tasty and VERY reasonably priced. I'm giving this place a bad review because the 2 times that I've been there I get the same waiter Juan, or so he told me, and he has a horrible attitude problem. The first time I went with a friend and when I mentioned to her that it seemed like he was having a bad day he comes back to the table and asks me what I said almost like he was ready to fight me. She told me to let it go so I did but did not have a pleasant experience after that at all. I thought maybe he was just having a bad say so I let it slide and went back a couple months later, yesterday, and I got the same guy. He was rude again to me from the start. When I first walked in he stared at me then said " what," like why I was there and I told him I wanted to eat. He then said, " to go?" in such a manner as to suggest that he didn't even want me in there. I was seated then the service was smi-decent for a little but then Juan started acting rudely again. He came to my table and asked me " what do you want?" And when I asked him a question he acted like I was an idiot for asking it, " what is the size difference between a large and a small shrimp cocktail?" He told me the ounces and I asked if he could show me a cup and he responded by raising his voice to me and repeating himself very rudely. While I was waiting I ran out of salsa and I had to get up and ask for more. When I asked him he stared me down and said he would bring it to my table again in a rude manner. I would like to add at this point that I was the only person in the restaurant so it's not like they were busy and there were 2 waiters. Again the rest of my dining experience was tarnished and I felt that anything I would ask for would be treated in an aggressive manner so I just made due with what I had at the table. I have worked in a few restaurants in my life so I always try to make the experience pleasurable for the waiter as they are, or at least should, doing the same for me but I was not able to do that in this restaurant. The food was just ok and the salsa was decent but the service was/is the worst I have ever had. I'm not sure if the owners know how much of a jerk this guy is but I hope they read this so they know what kind of person they are dealing with. read more

Eating yummy, cheap breakfast tacos at Chekos while getting the laundry done next door at Woodrow Washateria has become a Saturday morning routine for me and the boyfriend. A belly full of bacon & egg tacos plus clean clothes is always a nice start to the weekend. Aside from the breakfast tacos, the al pastor tacos are some of the most flavorful al pastor tacos in town. Two of those, plus $1 beer (everyday from 3-10, insane happy hour price and time!) comes out to around $5. The only qualm I have with Chekos are the frozen margaritas. Solid Mexican food at a very reasonable price. There are some consistency issues from time to time, but for the most part you'll get a good plate of food from some really great folks. The chicken is hit or miss in my opinion (mole pretty good, shredded in a taco not so much), but the other meat choices are all really good. I also tend to stay away from the cheese-based dishes since they using the typical yellow pseudo-cheese that I don't care for, and go straight for al pastor and barbacoa tacos or a burrito. Anyway...great prices, solid food, and friendly people make Chekos a good choice to satisfy your Mexican cravings. read more

I'm giving four stars because I have only eaten here twice and had the same thing. But that same thing was awesome. Chorizo and eggs is a favorite meal of mine and theirs just might be my new favorite in Austin. This is your typical, small mom and pop Mexican restaurant. You won't get five star service, but they are pretty good at taking care of you. Ask for the green sauce for more spice. Only thing I don't like... This place is ausome. The food is great. I see most negative reviews come from non Hispanic people and most don't know or have never tasted authentic Mexican food and this is pretty close, not prefect but pretty close. You all are used to tex-mex food and this is not tex-mex. Go to Chuy's, Chili's or Taco Bell for that. People complain about the Mole sauce the queso the wobbly tables the decor well it's not a furniture store and I'm sure the wobbly furniture was made like that by the customers in time. I go there to eat not to see their decor or furniture. Ive sat in a place and was not comfortable and moved to another place, no big deal. I really like their pork chop plate with rice and avocado and salad and refried beans. I don't care for Charro Beans anywhere. Fajitas are great and enchiladas are just awesome. I dont know about the drinks since I'm a light drinker and I'm usually on working hours when I'm there. I give this place 5 stars and 2 that are not shown and everyone is friendly and when there is alot of people there I know I won't have the staff catering to just me like a king because everyone else needs to be attended to. I want to like Chekos. Their location is very convenient to Brentwood and Crestview. Their food however needs some updating. Most plates seem like just melted cheese, meat, and beans on a plate. I know, this is Tex-Mex right? Not really. Most Mex restaurants at least give you a small dapple of green or avacado or fresh tomato. Not here (unless you are ordering guacamole). On the plus side, their happy hour is good. And the micheladas are a go-to favorite for us on Friday nights. read more

My wife and I went to chekos for a light dinner of 2 chalupas each, being vegetarians , ordered without cheese or meat, only quacamole and some beans on the chalupas and diced tomatoes and onion, very light, not much food. We got a water and 1 soda....got a bill for 33.00...guess the waiter did not like the way we looked,...when we asked about it he was very RUDE.........and threatened to call the police, would not call his boss for us...NEVER GO THERE. Cheko's gets a solid four stars outta me. Sure, the waitstaff can be a bit disinterested, the salsa isn't always perfect, and I wouldn't know a thing about the meat. But the beer and food is super inexpensive, and it's spot-on border Mexican, just like in my old home town. I usually get the chile relleno. It ain't high-end Tex-Mex with capers and sour cream with currants on top of a Chilean Andes-inspired ice cream flambé. It's good, solid, consistent border Mexican food. When I lived elsewhere, I longed for places like this. Why it's so hard for New Yorkers to replicate this simple pleasure is one of life's greater mysteries. I love checkos, I've been coming here for two years and have never written a review for it. The food is great, I've almost had evening on the menu. During the weekdays they'll have daily specials, the lunch specials, and the normal menu itself. I highly recommend the mole enchiladas, I'm very picky about mole sauce but this place has got it down. Very authentic, cheap, and delicious. The staff is great, always greet me with a nice smile when I walk in. However, just like us people the restraunt can have its days. Sometimes the staff can be ok service, sometimes there can be a new chef in the back and the food can be ok, other than that... For the price you're paying there really isn't anything to complain about. Its amazing the majority of the time I go, I love it regardless. Hope this helps some of you! read more

So we went to Cheko's because a place we usually go was closed. It was okay, at first my friend ordered a Dr.Pepper and received a water. The biggest problem I had was the use of what I assumed to be kraft singles in the cheese enchiladas, they tasted horrid and I couldn't bring myself to finish them. My sister found a strange leaf in her beans, hoping it's a spice of some sort. Everything else went okay, the others enjoyed their food. My boyfriend and I come here probably once a week, and if we could we would eat here more than that! The chicken mole enchiladas and flautas are AWESOME! The combo plate is stacked full! Seriously, it's 3 meals in one, and it's so cheap! I suggest the barbacoa and al pastor combo plate. I really love their picadillo too.
