Pork Katsu tan tan ramen - 3 stars - it's ok. The Katsu is crunchy, but the pork didn't have much flavor. The tan tan broth flavor was milder in flavor than other restaurants. When I looked at my friend's Katsu curry rice plate, it was huge. My ramen was regular size. And so, we contemplated driving elsewhere for dinner or just choosing to eat the place that was in front of us (so to speak). We chose the latter. 1. Yes, there's a lot of parking as this business is located at City Square Shopping Center. 2. Yes, displaying the menu in the front window may help people "choose" to eat at your business. That tactic slightly swayed our decision......and for the fact we didn't want to drive elsewhere. 3. Yes, there are many offerings on the menu. Besides ramen, there are sides, yakisoba, and Japanese curry dishes. 4. No, I didn't order ramen. I realize that's slightly odd. That's kind of like ordering chicken at a steakhouse, or not ordering cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory. But I digress. The chicken katsu curry was reasonably priced ($9.50) IMHO, and was a very generous portion. The dish was served hot, and rice to chicken katsu ratio was fairly equal for the most part (unlike another curry establishment I ate at a few months ago). My dining companions ordered the pork tonkatsu curry and the chef's ramen special, respectively. Both enjoyed their dinner entrees. 5. Yes, there's a decent amount of seating available. Counter seating along the walls is an option as well (this is useful I would imagine if you're alone). 6. Yes, I'd consider returning if I am in the area. We ordered the spicy chicken wings hold the spice, cuz Mama Bear don't play like that lol, and the veggie croquettes as pupus. The humongous wings were oh so crispy and golden on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside. Pretty much the perfect wing! The croquettes had a beautiful crunchy thick crust stuffed with fluffy mash potatoes and veggies. Mom wanted chicken ramen so we asked if we could order the Tan Tan Ramen sans pork, sub chicken, which was definitely a non menu request. They graciously obliged. I judge a good ramen by its broth. This one did not disappoint. It was creamy, and earthy...so much umami flavor throughout. My belly was definitely happy! Lastly, we had the chicken friend rice. Oh man, this one was loaded with chicken and topped with a fried egg. The kitchen even sent us sesame mochi stuffed with azuki beans for dessert, on the house. A friend invited me to come dine here but I couldn't make it out. After he posted his review and pics, I was disappointed that I couldn't make it out to dine with him. Everything looked so good so I made it a top priority to dine here within the next two weeks. I just made it to dine here in that two week time frame. Luckily I had some business in the area and another friend was off and wanted to check them out too. We arrived at City Square Shopping Center and luckily found parking right away. It's always busy here and parking is always a challenge. When we walked into the restaurant, it was packed! The timing of our experience wasn't the best though. The fire alarm went off 3 separate times during our lunch. It was very loud and lasted for extended periods. It's not the restaurants fault but it was annoying and took away from the experience. It's been a couple of months since I saw photos from Chef's Ramen on social media. I came across several reviews, both good and bad. I tried to arrange a last minute dinner here last night with a friend but that didn't capitalize. Not a fan of dining alone I still drove here. Located in City Square Shopping Center, which also popular businesses such as Kamehameha Bakery, Sugoi and Utage, Chef's Ramen is a cozy establishment offering popular Japanese eats of noodles, curry rice and side dishes. I arrived 730pm and was alarmed when there was NOT a single patron inside. I then started to have reservations of trying this place so I was going to eat elsewhere but sat at the counter seat and proceeded to order. After seeing a Mapo Tofu Ramen pic here on Yelp I had my mind set. But then the curry rice with fried oysters was appealing but went with my original pick along with a side order of chicken wings. I was pleasantly surprised to be asked if I wanted my food spicy or extra spicy. Not knowing the heat level here I opted for the regular spicy level. As the only one there my food came out quickly and immediately tried a spoonful of the Mapo Tofu. It was good but it tasted "Chinese". I was expecting the Japanese style Mapo Tofu, which I've been accustomed to when eating it with Ramen. My noodles very okay. Perhaps a tad over cooked as it was softer than what I was expecting. Spice level was good but could handle a little more so I added a couple spoonfuls of their chili sesame oil. Now the dish was to my liking. I noticed the waitress spoke Chinese, then I realized this is a Chinese owned Ramen establishment. The chicken wings arrived shortly after and despite waiting a bit to take a bite, it was still temperature hot with a nice crisp. Packed with lots of flavor the wings are legit. I did see on their menu that they also have dessert offerings but I had my mind set swinging over to nearby Magnolia. The dessert menu looked promising, perhaps I'll give it a try the next round. Portions are decent and a good value with such reasonable prices. Toss in lots of parking which makes me want to come back with family and friends to sample more menu items. Recommended. 2. FOOD First of all, the ramen noodles taste like they're from packages of the local Sun Noodle brand. You can buy it in bulk at Costco, supermarkets, or get it served at other restaurants like Zippy's as saimin. The Tan Tan Vegetable Ramen ($10.50): piled with sliced cabbage, mushrooms, and green onions, what's neat about the dish is that the broth is thick, but not so thick or salty as that of the competition. The Tonkatsu Vegetable Ramen ($10.25): features much of the same - they don't hold back on giving you sliced cabbage, mushrooms, and green onions in a lighter, not-too-salty broth. Purists may balk at what they find broth-wise here, but if you're wanting to enjoy ramen in large portions without getting heart disease, this is the place to be! A Meal Add-on ($5): gives you a small curry rice plate which tasted sweeter than the Japanese curry in most places. It also came with four (4) pieces of gyoza which seemed homemade: the skin is thicker than that of other places with homemade gyoza but those hating ginger will delight in the fact they the meat filling is devoid of ginger - whoohoo! 3. SERVICE There's a single lady in the front of the house waiting tables and taking care of the payments; service seemed just fine, but is better if you speak Cantonese rather than English. 4. ATMOSPHERE The place isn't overtly large but you could fit groups of up to 6 here without difficulty. Someone seems to have taken laminate flooring and used it subway-style on the walls. Stumbled onto this place with the kids when looking for a great spot for dinner. Awesome choice and decent prices. First off I had to say they had lots of parking, came in and was greeted nicely and asked for here or take out. I mentioned here and was escorted to a table by a sweet older lady. Service was good, staff was so kind and attentive to our needs. Promptly refilled drinks dropped off food and offered dessert. All in all this was a great stop and can't wait to return. I'm on a roll, er, getting rolls from eating so many delicious noodles. I love all kinds of noodle dishes from Asia or Europe. Um, didn't I just say "I Love eating noodles"? We happened to be in the Kalihi neighborhood the other evening after shopping at a home improvement store and decided to dine at our usual favorite, Utage. However, when we arrived, Utage was crowded (don't know if there was an event there) but luckily we found a parking space right in front of Chef's Ramen. I quickly checked my Yelp App and found this business as "Hot and New" since it opened in early December 2016. So, being hangry, I told my husband "Let's try it". Upon entry, we noticed a nice and bright digital menu board and a female worker behind the counter greeted us. She asked if we were dining in or doing take-out. We chose to dine in and were seated at one of their four-top tables. The restaurant is clean and well-lit. So as we perused the menu, I noticed their signature item "Black Garlic Oil with Parmesan Cheese Ramen" and my husband took notice of Oxtail Ramen Special + 4 FREE Gyoza. Okay, for ramen that sounds like it could rival a certain other ramen chain...this place does not disappoint. -Black Garlic Oil with Parmesan Cheese Ramen: The ramen had a good texture to it and the Black Garlic Oil broth was rich, flavorful yet not greasy. It was similar to Pearlridge's Weiliya but, had a better "finish". At $12.50, it cost more than Weiliya but certainly a lot less than the "other" ramen chain. For the neighborhood, it may seem costly but the portions are quite generous and flavorful. -Oxtail Ramen: The broth was consommé-clear and had a light star-anise flavor and beefiness. There were peanuts and black mushrooms (shiitake) and it was served with 5 nice sized pieces of tender (near falling off the bone) oxtails. Our server brought finely minced ginger root to accompany the oxtails. The generous portion of ramen held its texture even while my husband noshed on the oxtails and drank the broth. $12.95 -Gyoza: The oxtail special came with 4 FREE gyoza and I ordered a side order (eh, I shared them) of 6 gyoza. The bottoms were nicely pan-fried brown and the upper portion of the wrappers were thin and delicate. Each gyoza was plump with a flavorful pork filling. The owners of this ramen shop may be from Hong Kong but they have over 20 years of experience making ramen or . I believe they do this one at Agu for about $14 or so. Although a tad cheaper at Chef's Ramen, it missed the mark. The broth was decent but the noodles weren't right for the broth. My impression is that this is a joint more similar to the "fast food" ramen shops like Genki Ramen trying to be an upscale ramen shop. So prices are in between the two and quality is not quite there. It was their grand opening or something so we got free gyoza - that was an unexpected nice treat. Not too many seats - maybe 20-25 total. Decent and free parking in the City Square parking lot. Now that we're getting take-out so often, I'm generally not looking for an "authentic Japanese experience" or fancy hand-cut noodles anymore. In fact, if I can just plop myself down in front of my own TV--preferably in my comfy-est pajamas--with a giant bowl of quality broth, filled to the brim with nicely cooked (NOT limp or soggy!) ramen noodles and a few toppings, I'm a happy camper!! With that in mind, I'll be the first to admit, Chef's Ramen is NOT truly gourmet fare. Their broth is slightly thinner than other tonkotsu broths I've enjoyed (which usually have a thicker, fattier, mouth-feel). Also, their ajitama (the seasoned soft-boiled egg served on top) can be a little inconsistent...sometimes spot-pn, but sometimes a touch bland or overcooked. However, the noodles here are very good--thin hakata-style, nicely cooked so it retains a slight chewiness--and you can ask that they cook your noodles a little less or more than usual, to fit your personal preference, yay! Plus, at $10 per person (give or take a couple dollars), you get a GREAT value for your money here--the portions are large--and you can still afford a fun add-on, like gyoza or chicken wings (for extra big appetites, or leftovers)! Another plus about Chef's Ramen is that there's basically something here for everyone. Along with the wide assortment of ramen (tonkotsu or tantan), they also offer various types of curry, fried rice, yakisoba, gyoza, AND discounted combos of almost any of these! If you're looking for something "different," some of their more unusual offerings include kim chee fried rice, kim chee ramen, loco moco curry, mabo tofu ramen, spam katsu curry, black garlic oil parmesan ramen and "cheese gyoza." Although I'd like to try more of their menu items, it's hard for me NOT to order their black garlic oil parmesan ramen, anytime I have the chance...because it is SO GOOD (yes, all caps lock good, hehe!), and surprisingly affordable!! For about half the price of a similar dish (offered at trendier ramen shops), Chef's Ramen serves up a big bowl of umami that's bursting with layers of porky goodness, garlic and cheese...and don't forget the toppings: 2-3 slices of tender (and relatively lean) char siu, half an ajitama, some menma, garlic chips, and choi sum greens. Whoa! Sounds good? Then you might be a future fan of Chef's Ramen! As a sidenote, I recently tried their cheese gyoza, which are basically "crab puffs": deep-fried dumplings filled with imitation crab and cream cheese. Personally, I prefer a stronger cream cheese flavor (and maybe some garlic salt), but I'd eat it again if someone else ordered it, lol. Customer service here is great--friendly, yet professional, and efficient--and there's always ample free parking at the shopping center parking lot. Best Oxtail Ramen I've ever had. It's also the first oxtail ramen I've eaten so I have nothing to compare it to. It doesn't matter because this ramen rocks! The broth is flavorful, the greens are cooked perfectly, and the oxtail meat was falling-off-the-bone tender. I posted a picture of my bowl. Look at it! It's gorgeous. I ordered the #1 - Oxtail Ramen with 4 Gyoza. Excellent combination. It was suggested by the nice lady behind the register. I came on a Sunday evening at around 8:00pm. The first thing I noticed was that the place was very clean and had nice lighting. I was one of the last customers there so the cook came out and we chatted. He said that their restaurant has been there for a little over two years. They're adding new menu items and redoing some of the recipes for some of the items. He also said they don't use MSG! Sold!
