4.2 stars Take out order The place is cute with indoor and outdoor seating. I ordered the pork katsu bowl It was beautifully done and a good portion of food for the price. The katsu was cooked perfectly. There was a lot of rice in the dish but otherwise it was great and would definitely come back here again and order other items
Came here after a run and was seated immediately. We ordered the curry katsu and pork katsu with a side of fried. Everything was deliciously juicy, fries were crispy. I was happy that they didn't submerge all the katsu into the curry sauce, so some of them were still crunchy. Good amount of food for the price.
Wow! Insane, I was mind blown by their special of the day - Shrimp Katsu Burger w/ TarTar Sauce. It might have been a seasonal special - I can't remember but it wasn't on their regular menu. If you see the photo I posted, you can see how thick the piece of shrimp burger was... and the katsu was cooked perfectly in that the shrimp retained its texture and juiciness. I can easily eat 3 pieces of the shrimps katsu (without the burger bun). They should definitely consider adding the shrimps katsu burger as a main menu item! The shredded cabbage was a nice refreshing pairing. Their drink option looks amazing as well. I saw a couple folks order the strawberry match latte and they also have hojicha option as well.
3.5 stars. This wasn't really anything special but was a good quick spot to eat. I imagine the curry or other dishes are better - the bread was a bit too overpowering/much leaving little taste of the pork katsu
If perfection were a katsu bowl, that's exactly what Chef Katsu would serve. Every time im in the area, this is a must visit lunch spot. The katsu bowls are delicious, the soups are always good, and the service is fantastic. The price is fair and it's just overall an amazing experience. They have very limited seating, so keep that in mind when visiting! Overall, would highly recommend.
I tried takeout from here recently and felt like it was a very solid Japanese sandwich and bowl spot. The katsu shrimp burger was well-prepared, crispy on a soft bun with some nice crunchy veggies--I do feel like they could have turned the flavor up a little bit with another spicy or tangy or even sweet sauce in addition to the classic tartar. It was kind of like your typical po'boy, which I enjoyed, but nothing really set it apart or connected it to the particular cuisine. I also had the salmon dashi chazuke because the salmon ikura bowl sold out. Very simple, salmon rice and some shredded nori and scallions with dashi broth, but it was yummy and nourishing. The miso soup was also good, pretty standard. A good meal, just maybe could use some punchier flavors all around, but a solid option in the area for sure.
ordered the special katsu of the day- the shrimp katsu burger! it had the perfect bite and the bread was nice and fluffy. the shredded cabbage was crisp and well seasoned too! the pork katsu burger was a bit forgettable in comparison but still enjoyable overall. i wish the pork katsu was thicker. i think that would've enhanced the dish. for the price, it was acceptable. finally, we got the salmon and ikura bowl, which was fresh. the sushi rice was more flavorful than the standard stop and go spot. i'd visit again to try their salmon dashi chazuke.
Casual spot for a homey meal. I liked the salmon ochazuke more than the katsu rice bowl. There weren't many tables inside, and it was hard to find a table inside on a Friday night.
. I have been ordering from this restaurant for many years . I always order delivery as I live further away and it arrives hot and super delicious Love to order Salmon Dashi dish - really warms my insides especially on a cold day and I've gotten it when I was very sick and it nurtured me back to health! Chef katsu's dishes are like eating at someone's grandma's home. Beautiful presented, perfectly balanced . Also love the Salmon and chicken teriyaki bowls . Owner is lovely too and often supports others in need. Great business to support ! Still as yummy as 3 years ago when I last reviewed it!
Only had the shrimp katsu burger special, which was phenomenal. Very big patty and juicy shrimp, fried to perfection. I wish I did a better cross-section since it was so flavorful. Would definitely come back to try their other things.
I've been wanting to try this place for so long and so glad I did! I got my order to go, but wish I ate there so the katsu would've been crispier. The katsu was cooked perfectly and flavorful. I loved the side of shishito peppers and watermelon radish. The desserts looked super good, so I'll have to come back to try them!
A true gem. Finally stopped by on a Friday for lunch. Warning, they can get pretty busy so if you see a chair/table, grab it and then order. I wasn't sure what I wanted but I ultimately went with the salmon katsu burger w/ tar tar sauce ($12), french fries ($4.50), and a katsu palmer ($4). For $23 it was worth it. Obsessed with the salmon burger and the fries. Great tasting fries are hard to come by. I was pleasantly surprised and so was my friend. The salmon burger was fried and seasoned to perfection. It also came with shredded cabbage, shiso and mayo. I'd definitely order those again. I wouldn't get the katsu palmer again. I liked the yuzu lemonade but the japanese iced barley tea flavor wasn't for me.
It was busy on a weekend for a late lunch. There are only a few tables in the casual restaurant and there was some people standing around waiting for their orders. You order at the counter and can seat yourself. They will bring your food to you, and then you clean up after yourself. I got the salmon and ikura bowl and it was ready quickly. The quality of the salmon and ikura was great, but the portion size was small. I would come back to try some of the other items, but it is definitely a place for quick or casual meal since it's small and busy.
We got curry rice bowls to-go a couple weeks ago for a quick and easy lunch while we worked from home. Everything was packaged neatly, with the curry in a separate container from the rice and katsu. P.CURRY RICE BOWL (PORK KATSU) - 17.50 The pork katsu cutlet was still pretty crispy by the time we started eating, and the pork was nice and thick, although it wasn't particularly juicy or tender. I'm very glad that the curry was in a separate container -- not because it would have made everything soggy, but because it was so salty. By the end, I barely made a dent in the curry. The katsu curry isn't exceptional, but it gets the job done. We were just looking for something quick and nearby, and Chef Katsu Brooklyn was only a 10-minute walk away, so it served its purpose. read more
Chef Katsu is a casual, non-traditional katsu restaurant in Clinton Hill. They sometimes have more typical katsu sandos on milk bread, but their base menu is more focused on katsu burgers and healthy-ish rice bowls. I opted for the portobello rice bowl, which is served with a soy sauce-marinated egg and shishitos. The shishitos were pretty dry and flavorless, but the egg was excellent. I also loved the mushroom, but could have used a larger portion to go with the full serving of rice. read more

Fast and casual spot serving comforting and delicious food. Tables are first come first serve, you order at the counter, grab a seat, and they'll bring your food out when it's ready. We got the curry chicken katsu bowl, pork katsu bowl, and a side of fries. The curry had so much depth and umami. I need to know the recipe. The pork katsu was savory, tangy, and slightly sweet, making for a really satisfying meal. They substituted the shishito peppers with green beans, but I didn't mind too much. The fries were so good. They reminded me of McDonald's fries, but somehow even better. I also tried the yuzu mint lemonade, and it was way too tart for my taste. I'd probably skip it next time, but if you love sour drinks, you'll probably enjoy it. read more

Came in for dinner on a Friday and their curry was unfortunately sold out :( I opted for the portobello katsu burger instead and it was mid. Little flavor and too much bread. Wish there was more sauce. I was looking forward to trying this place but it missed the mark for me. I'll have to come back again for the curry or another dish. read more

Food/Drinks: We got the curry and the sandwich for food and the yuzu lemonade for drinks, as we noticed one on almost every table. The curry was rich and had a nutty flavor but something about it was slightly off to us. The drink was nice and tart but slightly dehydrating if we're being totally honest. The flavors would good but it seemed to be heavy in flavors that make you have the need to buy more to drown out the original flavors. We loved the pudding and fries though! Service: The cashier was sweet and understanding of our semi big order. The food came out slightly slow but it made sense as there was an abundance of people both inside and outside. Ambiance: The decor was really pretty and although it's a smaller shop, the ambiance was still very cozy. read more

Came on a Tuesday afternoon, and it was packed. There were people waiting to be seated while others just got takeout. Definitely come earlier if you want to sit down. There was a park across the street, but the children from the nearby school were having recess there so not much other seating. The katsu sandwiches were great. My favorite was the salmon. The curry on the chicken katsu was good. The breading on all were light. The meats were a little dry, so I would've liked if there was more sauce for all of the sandwiches. The purin was amazing, super creamy and milky. The caramel sauce wasn't too sweet either and paired so well with it. Don't skip it if it's available. Solid lunch spot with prices that are low for NYC. read more

Nice little spot for lunch! Very easy and convenient order at front. Staff were all really nice. The katsu is sweet and saucy over rice with some soshito peppers and radish. Delicious and healthy! The lemonade and matcha latte went well with the dishes. Definitely will be back! read more

I came here to get takeout for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The place was packed and there's limited seating so we decided to get takeout. We ordered the chicken katsu rice bowl and the salmon with ikura (salmon roe) rice bowl. The portion size was larger than I expected. The chicken katsu bowl had two cutlets and was crispy. I think the pork katsu would not be as dry as the chicken katsu so I would get that next time. I also really liked the shishito peppers and watermelon radish on the side. The salmon and ikura were very fresh and looked so pretty. I would definitely come back, everyone seemed to be ordering the katsu burgers. read more
Delicious food and drinks. The Hojicha latte didn't even need any sweetener. It was delicious and refreshing. The food was perfectly portioned. We got the Salmon & Ikura bowl, and the Salmon Dashi chazuki. For the bowl all the sauce was on the fish, but it never overpowered the fish or made it salty mixing it together added to the rice, but you still got each distinct flavor without it being boring. The wasabi tasted amazing and added an amazing touch to the food. I didn't think I would like the salmon Dashi bowl with fear of it being soggy, but the Dashi broth was amazing and the salmon was perfectly seasoned and the rice had a nice bite. We also had the option of choosing it hot or cold. The service was fast. Overall, a gem of a place 10/10 would recommend! read more
Very cute katsu place in Clinton hill neighborhood. We stopped by for dinner and it's a very casual place. The food was okay, and I wouldn't consider it authentic Japanese katsu, but I didn't try any of the salmon dishes. The yuzu cheesecake isn't very sweet which is great, it does have a grainy texture so if you're not into that I would skip. Overall pretty solid for a quick meal but not one to go out of the way for. read more
Stumbled across this place during a solo day in Clinton hill. This place is super small and very neighborhood vibe. The vibe was awesome and just relaxed the second you walked in all the staff were just having a good time with each other. No pressure. The yuzu mint lemonade was awesome because it wasn't super sweet. It was more tart which I really like. The pork katsu curry bowl was awesome! The pork katsu and the curry and the rice were all wonderful! read more

This quaint restaurant serves some delicious food. My friend treated me to dinner here and it was tasty. I love the clean and minimalistic decor of this restaurant. They also have a covered attached outdoor dining in front of the restaurant. We had the chicken Katsu curry bowl and the salmon teriyaki rice bowl with yuzu mint lemonade. The lemonade was so refreshing. I enjoyed the curry bowl and the chicken was perfectly crispy with a juicy interior. Both pieces of protein was a nice portion and the food is very affordable here. read more

My friend and I came here for dinner! You order at the front and they bring the food to you. We both got the pork katsu sandwich and shared fries (plenty for two people). Everything tasted so clean haha like its real food and not bad for you. read more
Very fresh and yummy food! I ordered the Katsu Salmon Burger and the cabbage was the perfect crunch to contrast the rich flavors of the salmon. The ingredients were organic and higher quality. The miso soup was seasoned properly as well. Service was great. Definitely recommend for a quick lunch in Brooklyn! read more
Small shop serving katsu burgers, teriyaki burgers, rice bowls, and an assortment of drinks and desserts. This is a perfect lunch spot but with limited seating indoors and outdoors. We stopped by here on a weekend afternoon after passing by it several times. We opted for a chicken katsu burger with curry sauce, and a salmon teriyaki bowl. All their items are around $10-15. The burger is so worth $10! they don't skimp on the chicken (pretty sizeable) and they top it off with cole slaw, all sandwiched in between a really delicious bun! almost like a potato bun?? I loved the curry sauce, which actually wasn't too messy. The burger is quite big though, so I'd share this + another item with a friend for some variety. The salmon bowl was good, but we thought the burger was way more worth it. We gulped everything down with a yuzu lemonade that was super refreshing but a little on the sweet side. read more
I'm hoping today was an off day for Chef Katsu, but both the Japanese fried chicken burger and salmon katsu burger were incredibly flavorless. All we tasted was the cheese and shiso. Both the chicken and salmon were incredibly thin, so that could've added to why there was virtually no flavor to either sandwich. Service was also alright. It was quite crowded on a Sunday, so the staff were not super tactful at ushering people from their tables out the door. I know this place is pretty popular on social media, so perhaps that was also why my expectations were quite high. Likely won't try it again... read more
My girlfriend and I had an outdoor weekday lunch here. There are about 10 folding chairs under an awning- not the most comfortable outdoor space, but I appreciate the option during these covid19 times. The menu is on the smaller side, but you can easily find something to order. Some items were unavailable, but they make that clear on the signage. I went for the pork katsu bowl, which had a lovely presentation and taste. Get it! My girlfriend got one of the burgers. She said it was good but that the bun was unnecessarily large. There were quite a few things that were unavailable on this day that I'd love to try in the future! There seems to be a decent takeout crowd, with lots of people hovering around waiting for their orders. The orders seemed to come out quickly! read more

I had wanted to try Chef Katsu after seeing the Kickstarter through the Just One Cookbook instagram account. I fell in love katsu burgers after a trip to Seattle in 2017 that blew my mind. I was waiting for the next trip I could take out to NYC where I could stop by Chef Katsu after it had opened. Ended up driving up to NYC for Labor Day Weekend with some friends from DC. I was able to find some street parking right on the next street near Chef Katsu. Walked in with a group of 5 and we were meeting up with 2 people there. It is a pretty small spot with a couple outdoor chairs/tables (for around 6-8 people) and then some small tables inside to hold another 10ish. It was a little crowded when we got there, so we had to make do with some of the seating and split up. It was a little squished but doable. We all ordered at the front - they have a bunch of different types of katsu burgers, bowls, and sides. Food/Drink: - Pork Katsu Burger with Miso Sauce - Shio-koji Marinated Pork Cutlet with Shredded Cabbage, Shiso, Mayo and Original Curry Sauce. I thought the burger was decent, but it didn't knock my socks off (I will say this was a couple weeks after I ate at my favorite katsu burger spot in Seattle). The katsu was a little small looking in comparison to the big bun and I wasn't a huge fan of the shiso. Flavor was good with the miso and the cheese was a good addition. - Fries - they were pretty nice and crispy. goes well if you're eating a burger. - Yuzu Lemonade - this was good! I would drink it again. Overall, good spot to try out in the Brooklyn area. Lots of different burgers and bowls to try out and different meat/veggie varieties. I would definitely come try it again next time I am in the area, but I am not sure if I would go out of my way again for it. read more
