The Shkmeruli Chicken Cheeseboat consisted of mozzarella, feta, and traditional Georgian shkmeruli chicken in a cream garlic sauce. We were looking for a casual spot for our group date and collectively decided to try Cheeseboat (since most of us had never tried Georgian food). What a gem of a spot this ended up being! We showed up about 20 min early to our ressie and our table was already set and ready to go. We ordered a mix of everything for the group of 6 - hummus, soup dumplings, mushroom penovani, and 3 cheeseboats (Gouda, Steak&Mushrooms, Chicken) - and we DEVOURED it all, double/triple dunking bread bits along the way. Granted, our group has a healthy love for bread and cheese, so there was zero doubt we'd love the food... but honestly it was a bit of a surprise of HOW MUCH we loved it. Over the course of the meal, they ran out of the three beers on their menu one by one (first the IPA, then the Kolsch). But the quality of that comfort food still earns 5 stars in my book. read more

Honestly Cheeseboat, I'm disappointed. All that hype and buildup to come here, it just didn't deliver. Here's the thing, I'm part Georgian, I've been to Georgia (the country), I know my cuisine...and a bunch of other restaurants in Brooklyn and Manhattan where you can get the real deal. Cheeseboat isn't one of them, nor does it market itself to be... This place is Georgian-sounding food, appealing to a hipster crowd who would have no idea what the cuisine, culture, and country is all about, so my expectations weren't high when it came to comparing the food to traditional cuisine. I found everything to be...bland. The Cheeseboats were okay. We had the regular one and a mushroom one. I've had better, I've had worse. The khinkali (beef soup dumplings) were probably the best dish. The lamb kebab was tasteless though the veggies it came with were really good, and the flaming chicken was a weird dish of French fries, sauce, and chunks of chicken. The borscht was basically beet water. We wanted to order a different soup, but they were out of it, and on top of that, they also ran out of the bottle of wine we initially wanted to order. I'd understand if this were 10:30pm on a Saturday after a dinner rush, but it was 7:15! I understand the concept of having mismatched plates and silverware. When done correctly it's usually very cute and Alice in Wonderland-like. Here, it doesn't work. Out of the three soups, two were served in a small bowl, and another in a "cauldron," as my friend called it. One of the teacups was chipped all over too...not exactly safe or appetizing... The service is lacking too. The waiters rarely came by, we had to hail them down each time we needed something, and when we wanted to order more food and asked for a menu, the waiter PLACED THE MENU...ON TOP...of the cheeseboat we were STILL EATING! I understand asking for a side of bread for dipping, not a side of dirty menu to accompany my dinner. Also, ask for salt, every dish needs it. I know this review is a bit cynical, because I've eaten the real deal and this isn't it...which is why I'm giving three stars instead of two. For those who want a tease of what real Georgian food could be like, cool, come here and take your Instagram and Snapchat shots. Go elsewhere for the good stuff. The aesthetic isn't over the top or jaw dropping but it's a nice place to grab a bite to eat. Their service was quick and everyone was very polite. This used to be my favorite restaurant in all of New York City and beyond. If there was a scale out of 100 I would give it 100. Unfortunately, after coming today (for the 4th time in just over a year), things are different. Let me start with the past because the former glory of this restaurant deserves to be retold. I loved Cheeseboat for what its name suggests - amazing dough in the shape of a boat loaded with cheese. The Cheeseboat restaurant made this already delicious dish even more special by adding more amazing ingredients such as prosciutto or mushrooms or delicious garlicky chicken (schmeruli). If that wasn't enough, they also served Cheesebread - flat focaccia like dough filled and topped with cheese and, again, Cheeseboat did something special here, offering cheesebreads that are filled with other scrumptious ingredients such as potato or mashed beans or meat. On top of that, it also offered excellent hearty Georgian dishes such as shkmeruli chicken, Soko Ketze, Chopped beef in Chakapuli. Dessert equally good with the Napoleon cake being the best. Alas, times have changed. After my visit today, for which I was as excited as I always was, I have to say I was disappointed. Here is why I lost my highest admiration: 1) Menu was cut by more than a half with fan favorites (all cheesebreads besides Imeruli, soko ketze, shkmeruli chicken, and many other mains and cheeseboats(most notably Mamma Mia!, BaconEggCheese, prosciutto, El Chupacabra Venus) completely eliminated 2) Size of dishes has downsized 3) Prices have been increased by over 10% for some dishes 4) Quality has decreased (the basic imeruli tonight was barely filled with cheese) 5) Complete misalignment with the online menu (CONTENT AND MENU) The only positive is that you can still have a tasty meal but it leaves you there, at 4/5 at best, longing for more. Maybe even a 4/5 is generous but still I have to do it for what this restaurant used to be. I'm afraid that I will finally have to switch my allegiance to Chama Mama as my go to Georgian Restaurant. read more

I've been planning to come visit Cheeseboat since I first saw a video about their namesake item online, so when I was in NYC this past weekend I just had to stop by. It ended up being a great choice -- but really, it's hard to go wrong with bread and cheese. My friend and I came by for dinner on a Saturday and were seated immediately -- the place started filling up a lot after we came, so we managed to beat the evening rush. We split the smoked gouda cheeseboat and a side of truffled potato puree. Both dishes were huge and excellent -- we ended up having enough leftovers for the next day as well. They truly do not skimp on the truffle oil in the potato puree, which was smooth and heavenly, and the cheeseboat was gooey and delicious. If you love cheese as much as I do, it is absolutely imperative that you visit Cheeseboat at least once. I don't know the technical term for what a cheeseboat is, but it's exactly what it sounds like - multiple types of irresistibly gooey cheese melted into an enormous bread 'boat.' I got the one with macaroni and cheese cooked into it, and it was utter heaven. They lacked an extensive specialty drink list, but their raspberry marg was delicious. Served in a mason jar and made from fresh raspberries. If I had to pick one complaint, it'd be those crazy square wooden stools... my tailbone still aches. We got the sampler which had two mini bread loaves, some type of marinated mushroom, and 6 of some type of meatball without any meat. Despite my bad description, they were so good, especially the mushrooms. We got the meatball cheeseboat, as well. Naturally, we ordered way too much food, but wow it was good and it heated up well. There is literally nothing better than melty cheese with delicious home made meatballs stacked on top in some soft, pillowy bread. It sounds simple, but it was well worth the experience. I am Georgian myself and I always welcome new authentic Georgian cuisine in New York City, and don't get me wrong we have lots of Georgian restaurants already but this is why Cheeseboat is very different, Even though food is as Georgian as it can get it has this modern twists and turns in almost every meal, which is great on its own, Place also happens to have that authentic but kinda hippy vibe, that's something new and pretty welcoming. I was there twice, once for my brothers bday and again with my friend, I loved both times to be honest, food or atmosphere wise. They do have certain things that are kinda of overpriced and could taste better according to what they charge but overall it was a great experience both times I was there. Only issue I have is they put too much salt and seasoning in certain things, which is what we Georgians love to do anyways I guess. Stuff is very friendly and understanding: last time I went there I sort of had an issue with my food, My eggs Benedict was overcooked and like I mentioned earlier way too much seasoning and salty so they gave me discount and I was charged only for one meal, which I appreciated a lot. Cheese is one of my favorite things about being alive, so you can imagine my excitement when I realized that cheeseboats exist. My friend and I came to Cheeseboat with a singular agenda on our mind: to stuff our bodies with as much cheese as we could without hating ourselves. We failed in our mission because after consuming this cheeseboat I really did hate myself (but in the best kind of way). I was stuffed for like 12+ hours. This stuff is FILLING and ridiculously indulgent. It tasted exactly how I'd imagined--no surprises. It was literally just melted cheese inside of a doughy bowl. Since my two favorite things are cheese and bread, I was completely satisfied, and my friend was too! It's more than enough for two people to share. I took off a star because the second dish we ordered was disappointing--I can't quite remember the name, but it consisted of a light cucumber salad and two pieces of slightly soggy bread topped with prosciutto-esque meat. My friend and I were averse to the texture/taste and couldn't finish it. Thankfully, the cheeseboat was more than enough to satiate our hunger, though! Lots of potential - Came with a group of 8 and was seated at a table that was meant for 6. We made it work and it was okay. Ordered food and 6 people got their food within 20-30 minutes. 2 people however never received their food until an hour later, very upsetting and we asked about the food several times incase it was missed. As a fan of khatchapuri, I was totally game to try a new place. We started with the vegetarian cuatro dip, because they were out of the stuffed grape leaves. I wasn't terribly impressed by the dips and I thought the dried lavash it was served with was a total miss. We followed it with the soup dumplings with the beef & pork filling. The dumpling itself was great in texture, but didn't have much actual soup inside the dumpling. Me and my 2 friends showed up here right at 5 pm because we were over the moon that we found a Georgian restaurant so far away from our homes (we were Armenian, Russian and Persian). This place is an absolute recommendation if you are looking for a Caucasian nook in Brooklyn - it felt like stepping into a small restaurant in Tbilisi. I went there on Saturday Aug 28 expecting to redeem pulsd voucher. I found there was no customer during that time. But there were staffs in the restaurant sitting at the dining table. One of them came and spoke to me if I'm looking to dine in. I mentioned that I would use the voucher. He responded that he will tell the manager about it, and he let me find the table to sit down afterwards. 10 minutes later, the same guy came back and refuse me to redeem that voucher. Said it can't be used for that day. So I checked the voucher again to make sure, also clarified with him that this was eligible to use, still he didn't let me use it. Once I left this place, I contacted Pulsd that I wanted a refund since they don't let me use it. Their customer service reply that my report was a lie after they found the restaurant let another customers use the voucher at the same day. This situation was truly disappointing and unacceptable. They must have not trained and updated their staff to know what terms of promotions the restaurant are running on. And I personally will not go back to visit anymore. read more

I'm starting to love Georgian food. Seriously love it. This is a welcome new addition to the neighborhood of Williamsburg and I think it will do well here because who doesn't love cheese?! Especially with all the trust fund kids and the youngins drinking their pbrs and evan williams shot combos nearby. I will say its not the best Georgian food I've ever had though. A few kinks to work out still which slipped this to four stars but its pushing to 5. Things you should definitely order: The original cheeseboat - It's a boat made out of bread with copious amounts of cheese and a runny egg that you swirl around in the center and then you tear away at the bread and dip dip dip. That and the Imeruli Khachapuri are awesome starters for your first time here. The later is more like a flat cheese pie. The sweetness of the cheese and the flakiness of the puff pastry is out of this world. Don't stop here though. We also ordered the cheese stuffed mushrooms (I can envision this sucker being stuffed with crab which is probably not a Georgian thing, but crab and cheese in button or larger sized mushrooms, dear god) The cheese is still great. Dumplings: They have a pretty large variety. Khinkali soup and meat dumplings are the most traditional kind. Unfortunately the meat was lacking in flavor and there was nearly no soup inside. They were tasty meat dumplings with a very nice yogurt dill sauce that was drizzled over. The other type of dumpling I thought stuffed with cheese was actually really phenomenal. They give you spreadable butter just to add on to the heart attack. I love it so much. Upon my last and first visit we actually didn't try any of the meat dishes, so I know I should probably definitely come back. Desert was a little uninspiring but we split an apple cobbler that was a bit on the tough and dry side but the ice cream that accompanied it (pistachio and vanilla) was really quite good and tasted homemade. It got quite packed while we were there and feel they could use one more server on the floor for busier nights. My friend and I shared the traditional cheeseboat (with butter and egg on top) and it was WAY more than enough for two people, and so delicious! I was full after but not feeling too gross. I came with a party of 8, which was perfect because we were seated in this slightly secluded alcove and also got to try a bunch of things since we ate family style. I got the beef soup dumplings for my main course and they were decent, but I would have preferred more salt and less pepper. The service was pretty good. This is the only Georgian restaurant I've been to but definitely wont be my last. I mean cheese and bread, sign me up! I've always gotten the traditional cheeseboat - a self proclaimed CAULDRON of cheese served with egg and butter. After furiously mixing the butter and egg into the cheese you literally start to rip apart the bread boat to dip into the yummy mixture. If you are a cheese lover this is def the place to you - and it's even helped me cure a hangover or two. My one tip here is to split the cheeseboat with whoever you are dining with so you are able to sample something else delicious on their menu. I usually opt for lighter dishes to balance the heaviness of the cheeseboat and the salads or the spicy avocado dip are always good bets. Again, you will lave STUFFED so I definitely suggest coming to Cheeseboat on a lazy weekend day for brunch or before a casual night in. read more

All four of us ordered together, but when the bill came our wait staff asserted that there had been a malfunction which meant that the bill was divided into bills of different totals which they then left for our party to work out. These checks were not in any way correspondent to our orders, mind you, and we had not asked for separate checks. They did not apologize with a complementary dessert, and they didn't not appear to try to correct the check . It almost felt like they were aware that by creating a confusing situation at the end of the meal, that they were likely to benefit from the desire of all parties to not underpay or under tip. With a restaurant concerned with real customer service, they would have cancelled their weird fractured billing and started from scratch, rather than making it out problem. The behavior of the staff who were in charge of our check changed my review from a positive one to a negative one, as the negligence of that staff palpably deflated to mood of our party. And the person who left the dinner the most frustrated was the same person who had been the most enthusiastic about dinner at Cheese Boat and had suggested that we all eat there.
