This is probably the best Cheddar's I've ever been to. The service was great the last few times I've been. The honey butter croissants are a must! I usually get the steak & shrimp, it's yummy. I returned my meal and didn't get another because I was afraid of how long it would take. We've ate here years ago and loved it. We were driving through Dover when I noticed a sign reading "scratch kitchen" The brakes went on immediately... Now, not all scratch cooking is great. You can make hideous food if you don't know what you are doing. On the other hand, if you use processed, frozen and canned starters, you can pretty much guarantee a result not very good. Well, Cheddars has someone who knows how to utilize fresh ingredients well. First, the complimentary croissants were truly to-die-for. (Next time though I will ask for them at the end of the meal rather than as an appetizer-they are sweet and qualify as a dessert) The salad was chock full of good, fresh veggies with a superior honey lime dressing. (I do love a good salad!) The chicken pot pie was the best I've ever had out. (and I've tried it in many many places...) The burger was so good, I'd go back just for that. (It may sound weird that a burger could be a destination food, but a really great one is rare) The fries were the only let down-they were good but not great. Just left Chedders and I'm traveling for work as I do regularly. Had a bad experience here. Bartender could care less, not busy but 25 min to get the salad, food came shortly afterwards, ribs and steak. Ribs were decent, steak was horrible. Didn't see the bartender again for 20 minutes. I would have had a second drink and sent the steak back. Over cooked a lot! I ordered medium but it was well, well done and shoe leather. No one to be found. My girlfriend and I decided to go here for lunch the other day, in spite of the fact that multiple people told us how horrible the service had been. The preceding Yelp reviews did not bolster my confidence as we sat down for our meal. Nevertheless, we had a pretty good time. Although it was well before 5 o'clock, we decided to try Cheddar's cocktails. I had the Landslide, and she had the Painkiller. Both were served in a massive goblet-like glass, tasted absolutely delicious and were well worth the $5.99 price tag. (My gf wondered why the menu stated that customers were only permitted two Painkillers when we ordered... she figured out why after a few sips). As for food, I got a simple club sandwich. Nothing fancy, but it was prepared properly. My gf got the steak and chicken tenders combination. The steak tasted okay, certainly not the best, but for the price it was a great deal. The chicken, broccoli, and mashed potatoes were good too. I'm not sure if my experience is an aberration, or if Cheddar's has actually improved. We finally got into the new Cheddars in Camden. The food was truly amazing, especially for a chain restaurant. The fish tacos were the best I've ever had. I had them grilled rather than fried and they were light, moist, and seasoned to perfection. it came with a spicy dipping sauce, but it was much too hot for my tastes. The black beans side dish was quite good as well. I had a taste of my wife's ribs and they were meaty and quite moist. Overall I thought the food was a step above what you can normally find in the Dover area. Service was prompt and friendly. However, they sat us in a booth near the back of the main room, close to the kitchen. It smelled really bad, almost like some kid wet his pants on the seat. I mentioned it to the waitress before we left and told her what I thought it smelled like, and she said the people sitting there earlier thought it smelled like dirty mop water. It turned out to be a small rug on the floor just behind the booth and as soon as they removed it the smell went away. But, if you've already had one customer complain about the smell - why in the world would you seat someone else there before fixing the problem? read more

This restaurant has a lot going for it: beautiful building and decor, good food, fair prices. Maybe someday I will get to enjoy dining there in another location. Unfortunately, in the Erie PA location, which I have tried twice, I will not try again. The first time I visited was a busy time of the day, so I made allowances. But I recently took my 95 year old father at 2:00 PM on a Monday, when the restaurant was almost empty. Several sections were not being seated for some reason, but there were many available tables in the open sections all waiting to be bussed. There was no hostess on duty, but the manager, a man covered in tattoos and carrying a squirt bottle around aimlessly, told us there would be a ten minute wait. So we waited. After 20 minutes I grabbed the manager and had to remind him that we were still waiting, along with 4 other groups who had come in behind us. He pushed a few buttons on the computer, which caused some kind of a malfunction that flustered him for another few minutes. Eventually, he resolved the problem and seated us. After being seated we placed our order and were given the opening croissants, but we had no silverware or napkins. I had to stop the waitress and ask for cutlery. She disappeared for 10 more minutes, then came back and said she "couldn't find any silverware" and disappeared again. No wonder, since half the tables in the only open section had still not been bussed since we arrived. We both ordered the salmon and waited another 40 minutes before giving up and walking out, passing piles of dirty dishes on at least 6 empty tables on our way. We passed a line of ten or twelve guests backed up in the doorway, waiting for a hostess that we knew would never come. Slowly shuffling my 95 year old father through the restaurant and out the door, there was nobody around to either take a payment or ask us why were leaving. Never again. read more

This place is a chain with above average food. Had dinner here on a Sunday night with my parents. Waited 15 minutes for a table. Service was a bit slow. We had to ask for our initial drinks twice. Our table had all our plates and cocktail glasses when we left the restaurant. The cocktails are the right price! The decor is nice but the vibe was a little dull. Our portions were decent for the price and presentation for our food was pretty nice. The rib eye, onion rings, Asian salad and croissants are good! I do not recommended the broccoli casserole side as it seemed to be all cheesy rice and no broccoli. All in all- I'll probably be back for another meal at Cheddar's. read more

Now let's get to the down side....we were there for lunch and waited over an hour and a half literally no exaggeration. It took approximately 30mins to get our drinks then a little over an hour later to get our food. When we received our food it was not hot it was just about room temp. The kids Mac and cheese was cold, the cheese on the top started to turn into that old Mac and cheese dark orange color. Also my maple chicken sandwich was still on the pink side in the center, I didn't dare send it back because I didn't have another hour to stay there. Our server never came here and there to check on us. While having so much time to kill waiting for my food I people watched as we all do....I never saw my server, I watched another server drop trash on the floor. That same server who noticed she dropped the trash walked by it and looked at it as she kept going, she did this 3 more times never picking it up. Right from the appetizer, we appreciated the origin of the place's name - the onion rings were obviously made in house from scratch, the best I've ever had. I got the 8oz sirloin with sauteed mushrooms, my wife got the chicken maple bacon sandwich. My steak was perfect, the mushrooms were delicious. My wife's sandwich was wonderful. Both our kids loved their meals as well (ribs and a chicken pot pie) and we were shocked at the very affordable price. Before we left, our server Chris, who was attentive and gracious throughout stopped by to drop off cookies for us. The food is very good and very reasonably priced. The only downfall is the service. Good service is the exception rather then the rule. The croissants are amazing. All the portions are very good sized. My kids love the chicken fingers, which are heavily breaded and crispy. The fish tacos and Monte Cristo are my favs. We would eat here significantly more if my wife could tolerate how poor the servers are. I had no complaints waiting 45 minutes to get a table, it's the newest place in town and everyone wanted to try it, so I just picked up one of their buzzer coasters and went to Walmart and came back a bit later. We got our appetizer about 10 minutes later. It didn't bother me too much, as it was a very packed restaurant. We got the trio deal, nachos (which was actually half a taco shell) loaded with burger, cheese and some sauce) mozz sticks and loaded potato skins (topped with cheese and bacon bits) That didn't last long, it was quite good! Our entree however was a bit odd. I had ordered a medium rare steak, my partner ordered medium. When our entrees came, we cut into them to check done-ness. My steak was medium well, his was medium. So we swapped. He likes them more done than I do. Sadly, the steak wasn't the greatest Ive ever tasted. No juice when cut into, due to it's temperature. However, that aside the overall flavor was good. Mashed potatoes came with. Those were delicious. I had never received my green beans that I ordered, which was a bit of a let down. I would have said something, but I only just remembered not receiving them as I'm writing this review! I give this a 4 star, mainly for the very polite and courteous staff, but with some tweaking, I know this restaurant will shine. There was nothing scratch about this and there was no home cooking present. The food was just bad. The best thing I had was the side salad that came with my meal. I ordered ribs and shrimp with the loaded baked potato, and I will say the shrimp were tiny and you only got 4 and I have never seen ribs so tough and dry. We also had the trio sample that came with chicken strips (very salty), tortilla chips, salsa (watery and no taste), and quesso dip (watery and salty). The food was pretty cheap, but I guess you get what you pay for, but the quality of the food was less than that of Friday's or Ruby Tuesday and that really doesn't speak volumes. I did already add a tip about this restaurant. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately. Within a minute a server appeared and took our drink orders and had them at our table in about a minute. I ordered a cup of potato soup and a burger with bacon barbecue sauce cheddar cheese onion straws done medium well. My son ordered 3 croissants. My soup came out within 5 minutes and then the burger took an additional 17 minutes to appear. My sons food took over 21 minutes to appear and that was after I asked about it and then threatened to leave because we were so hungry. My son also ordered a side of bacon and get this... There were two tiny , miniscule, ridiculously small pieces of terrible bacon. The poor kid was so disappointed. As it turns out burger was overcooked but tasty, and barbecue sauce is very good, however everything else was mediocre or poor. The only reason this restaurant rates two stars has to do with the fact that the burger meat was acceptable and that initial service was very fast.
