It was a rare cool, overcast, rainy, day in South Florida so we were seeking something hearty and warm. We have dined here and brought various friends here so we knew this would be a good lunch choice. I had the combination plate,(spelled Kombination), with bratwurst, sausage, sauerkraut, and potato pancakes. You get sour cream and apple sauce for your potatoes. With a short wait, while servers took orders from a group of about 30 patrons all the way from Cooper City, our meals were ready. So glad I chose this delicious combination! Parking is available in the back and some Atlantic Avenue street parking! Danke!

Interesting spot for German food! My wife was craving schnitzel and luckily I found this place. We went for an early dinner without reservations. There's a very small lot in the back and we got the last spot when we arrived. Not sure how far you look for parking if it's full. There's outdoor seating... for maybe events or when it's better weather. It wasn't crowded inside and we got seated right away. It did fill up by the time we left though. Fun decor with steins all over the walls. I got a German mule since I'm not a beer drinker. It was fine. For food, we got the potato pancakes app, my wife got the pork schnitzel, and I had veal schnitzel with spatzle and red cabbage. Potato pancakes were served with sour cream and apple sauce. It was very filling and we only got half way through our entrees. Schnitzel was huge with gravy. The berry sauce (can't remember the name) and red cabbage were nice to cut the friedness/grease. Spatzle was nothing like I expected. Tasted so alien to me but also wish the portion was larger! Service was good and workers were friendly. This was the first German restaurant I've been to and would definitely come back to try other dishes. There was a Groupon available so it definitely helped the overall price point of the experience which I would have felt was on the high end for the entrees otherwise.

My Love said...I am taking you on a date. It's a surprise. Closer to the restaurant he said. I'm taking you to Checkers. I fully believed he drove us 40 minutes to a Checkers fast food restaurant, but I love him and didn't want to gripe! I was more than pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be the extraordinary German restaurant Checkers Old Munchen! I enjoyed the ambience and beer stein decor. The staff was friendly. And the food and German beers were top notch. Best Checkers ever lol

Terrific German place that's an institution in Pompano Beach. Great food and ambience 5 star food: usually German food is a bit too heavy and starchy for my preferences, BUT their Chicken paprika is pretty amazing, as is their pickled cabbage 5 star service: the Brazilian man who was our server was sweet, funny and very helpful. In fart everyone my small group interacted with was without exception incredibly nice 4 star ambience: inside it has a moody brew pub feel. Outside parking can be a little tough on a busy night. There's a small lot behind the restaurant and more spaces on the street and in lots for closed offices nearby

I will complain that we had reservations but took 25+ mins to get seated. The food was delicious!!! Attitude of the waitress could have been better. Music entertaining. When I get back to Florida I will be sure to stop again.

This restaurant has the best German food and atmosphere in south Florida. There is a large population of German nationality here. The restaurant has expanded to include three storefronts. They are opened for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is a large menu of German specialties and beer. My favorite is the Bavarian platter which has a sampling of veal schnitzel, sausages, and sauerbraten with two sides. They have several appetizers such as potato pancakes, pretzels, sausages and cheese. My favorite beer is War Steiner. For beer lovers they serve a large boot shaped glass. Save room for desert, because the apple strudel is excellent.

Really like this place. Old fashion-y German restaurant. Has a cute outside patio with a live German band, which was pretty cool, although way too loud. Couldn't talk at all while they played. The food is delicious! Started out with some potato pancakes and an order of fried Muenster cheese that comes with a tasty raspberry sauce. Both delicious and surprisingly neither was very heavy considering what they were. For entrees, we had one sauerbraten, order of schnitzel, and 2 combo plates. Everything was delicious. Apple strudel for dessert also yummy. Can't wait to return!

If you are looking for a traditional German restaurant, look no further! We discovered this hidden gem when we lived nearby. We had gone for dinner numerous times over the years when we lived near and we also brought many friends and family over the years. When we recently returned to the area for a visit we went for dinner and I am happy to say It was just as delicious as always! When my husband and I went for dinner we had the same server from several years ago. That was a nice surprise. When you are seated they serve some cut up pretzels with mustard as you are looking over the menu. To start we ordered two German beers. For appetizer we ordered potato pancakes which is served with applesauce and sour cream. For dinner I ordered sauerbraten with spatzle and red cabbage. The Sauerbraten is a German pot roast that is marinated for two days and topped with a sweet & sour gravy. It is always consistently delicious and fork tender. After dinner, even tho I was completely stuffed, I couldn't leave without having their warm homemade apple strudel which was served with vanilla ice cream. Everything from beginning to end was delicious. My husband and I noticed that since we had been there last they had expanded the restaurant. We were happy to see that our favorite German restaurant is still thriving. Parking in this area can be tough but we found plenty of parking across the street. Keep in mind the restaurant isn't huge nor is it fancy but it's good and gets crowded in the winter months! If you would love to have some delicious authentic German food I highly recommend Checkers Old Munchen. The history of the restaurant Is described as the following: History: Established in 1982 Checkers Old Munchen was started by Detlef Neuman in 1982. He was a Chef at a 5 star rated hotel in Munich. He passed away and his tradition and recipes have been continued by Mathew Moore, who has owned the restaurant since 2007. In 2012, Checkers Old Munchen had a fired and was closed for 9 months. We gutted the entire restaurant and built a new restaurant with the same charm. In 2015, Checkers Old Munchen was named Best German Restaurant by New Times.

Haven't been here in awhile. It was always good food and service and a fun cute place to be. Very reasonable prices.

Everything was as good as it was last time, with the exception of this time having been harassed by several house flies and one fruit fly. Otherwise, the food and service were excellent. Please take care of the fly problem.

Food: absolutely blown away by the food. I'm not sure I knew what I was expecting when I walked in, but i'm so glad we came in. We started out with the veal and pork sausages, along with the potato pancake. All three were absolutely delicious with the mustard. The field schnitzel, was one of the best breaded fried cutlets i've ever had. The apple strudel was warm and inviting. I can't wait to come back.

If you're looking for a life-changing schnitzel experience, head to Checkers Ole Muchin. German restaurants are few and far between down here, but this place makes the drive so worth it. The veal schnitzel is out of this world and pair it with the mashed potatoes and spatzle, and you are in for an amazing treat. Pro tip - ask for extra lemons because everyone knows lemons make the dish. The walls are lined with beer steins and if you down 30 beers out of a 1 liter boot, you too can earn Das Boot! PROST!

Ask the Community - Checkers Old Munchen

    How is the parking?

    Adequate, behind the restaurant.

Has the renovation been completed yet? Just something I don't like eating in a place under renovation.

I was there a week ago and there was one wall that was partially covered by a tarp. I didn't know why, guess a renovation makes sense. Hope that helps.

    Does the staff wear masks?

No. We are mask free but guests are welcome to wear masks.

    Is this dog friendly?

Yes. There is even a dog menu.

Has there been a change in chef? I had chicken paprika yesterday and it was not at all consistent to how it has tasted in the past. It had a very weird flavor. Trying to eat leftovers today and there is a very weird taste going on. What has changed?

Both Chefs are still there and both been there for over ten years. There was a shortage on smoked Paprika which we normally use. Good news that it is back in good supply.
