My favorite German place in Florida we drive from Wellington to eat here, it is delicious, excellent service and kind people 10 stars!!!

I really enjoyed everything about this long established German restaurant. They have been here forever and I visited a few times in the past with no regrets. Now it's time I visit more often. The ambiance is wonderfully German and although I have never been to Germany, the menu appears to include all things German. We were greeted and able to choose a table near the window. Our server was new but very friendly and helpful. We ordered a pork schnitzel and bratwurst dinner with sides of red cabbage, sauerkraut, hot and cold German potato salad. Our meals came out very quickly and we enjoyed everything on our plates. The menu included many different types of schnitzel along with sauerbraten, bratwurst and other recognizable dishes. We also had a piece of German chocolate cake for dessert but had to bring it home to finish it Parking may be a little tough during the season but all in all, prices were very fair and we had a great evening. read more

It was a rare cool, overcast, rainy, day in South Florida so we were seeking something hearty and warm. We have dined here and brought various friends here so we knew this would be a good lunch choice. I had the combination plate,(spelled Kombination), with bratwurst, sausage, sauerkraut, and potato pancakes. You get sour cream and apple sauce for your potatoes. Interesting spot for German food! My wife was craving schnitzel and luckily I found this place. We went for an early dinner without reservations. There's a very small lot in the back and we got the last spot when we arrived. Not sure how far you look for parking if it's full. There's outdoor seating... for maybe events or when it's better weather. It wasn't crowded inside and we got seated right away. It did fill up by the time we left though. Fun decor with steins all over the walls. I got a German mule since I'm not a beer drinker. It was fine. For food, we got the potato pancakes app, my wife got the pork schnitzel, and I had veal schnitzel with spatzle and red cabbage. Potato pancakes were served with sour cream and apple sauce. It was very filling and we only got half way through our entrees. Schnitzel was huge with gravy. The berry sauce (can't remember the name) and red cabbage were nice to cut the friedness/grease. Spatzle was nothing like I expected. Tasted so alien to me but also wish the portion was larger! Service was good and workers were friendly. This was the first German restaurant I've been to and would definitely come back to try other dishes. Great food and ambience 5 star food: usually German food is a bit too heavy and starchy for my preferences, BUT their Chicken paprika is pretty amazing, as is their pickled cabbage 5 star service: the Brazilian man who was our server was sweet, funny and very helpful. What can you say about this great German food spot located on Atlantic Blvd in Pompano Beach, Florida. I can't think of enough causes to drive up and have some of the Pork Schnitzel, Warm Potato Salad and Red Cabbage! Honestly I have been coming here for years and can tell you that the food is excellent and affordable. Add in the fact that they have a full bar, and you have a recipe for a real good time. The atmosphere is amazing as well as everyone tends to be having a great time and all the beer steins on the walls (and I do mean everywhere) really add to the Bavarian feel of the place. Feel like joining the beer challenges, no problem as they have "beer boot" challenges of varying sizes. Prior customers that have completed those challenges have their names displayed in their walls as well. Overall, I have to say the food and drinks here are great so you won't be disappointed if you have a hankering for some good German food! The service and staff are also very friendly and if the are full you can always eat at the bar. One thing to look out for is parking as you may end up parking in the street as they do not have much of it available in the rear. No worries though, if you just drive half a block down you can park in front of an open field which works well. This restaurant has the best German food and atmosphere in south Florida. There is a large population of German nationality here. The restaurant has expanded to include three storefronts. They are opened for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is a large menu of German specialties and beer. My favorite is the Bavarian platter which has a sampling of veal schnitzel, sausages, and sauerbraten with two sides. They have several appetizers such as potato pancakes, pretzels, sausages and cheese. My favorite beer is War Steiner. For beer lovers they serve a large boot shaped glass. The food is delicious! Started out with some potato pancakes and an order of fried Muenster cheese that comes with a tasty raspberry sauce. If you are looking for a traditional German restaurant, look no further! We discovered this hidden gem when we lived nearby. We had gone for dinner numerous times over the years when we lived near and we also brought many friends and family over the years. When we recently returned to the area for a visit we went for dinner and I am happy to say It was just as delicious as always! When my husband and I went for dinner we had the same server from several years ago. That was a nice surprise. When you are seated they serve some cut up pretzels with mustard as you are looking over the menu. To start we ordered two German beers. For appetizer we ordered potato pancakes which is served with applesauce and sour cream. For dinner I ordered sauerbraten with spatzle and red cabbage. The Sauerbraten is a German pot roast that is marinated for two days and topped with a sweet & sour gravy. It is always consistently delicious and fork tender. After dinner, even tho I was completely stuffed, I couldn't leave without having their warm homemade apple strudel which was served with vanilla ice cream. Everything from beginning to end was delicious. My husband and I noticed that since we had been there last they had expanded the restaurant. We were happy to see that our favorite German restaurant is still thriving. Parking in this area can be tough but we found plenty of parking across the street. Keep in mind the restaurant isn't huge nor is it fancy but it's good and gets crowded in the winter months! If you would love to have some delicious authentic German food I highly recommend Checkers Old Munchen. The history of the restaurant Is described as the following: History: Established in 1982 Checkers Old Munchen was started by Detlef Neuman in 1982. He was a Chef at a 5 star rated hotel in Munich. He passed away and his tradition and recipes have been continued by Mathew Moore, who has owned the restaurant since 2007. In 2012, Checkers Old Munchen had a fired and was closed for 9 months. Surprisingly good German food on East Atlantic in Pompano. The service was friendly and good, the place humming with business on a weeknight, and the food was delicious. I had the veal schnitzel with very good, red, cabbage, and spaetzle.. my friend had a platter that included different types of wurst and the split pea soup was really good. Oh, Checkers!!! Nooooo! Why? How has this been allowed to happen? I picked up a to go order today only to toss all of it out upon opening the disaster that was in those styrofoam boxes. So .... We always celebrate my mother in law's birthday. She was a lovely woman who really appreciated German food. New to this area so was surprised to find there are very few authentic German food restaurants. My search did uncover Checkers Old Muchen which had the look of an authentic old world restaurant but it was over an hour away. Always willing to take a road we set off with high hopes of a good meal. Sooooo very worth it. Simple decor with beer steins covering every wall (surprisingly NOT dusty or cobwebbed) it was reminiscent of our favorite NY German restaurant. Staff was very attentive offering advice on dishes and portions. Each dish was nicely done -- the onion soup had a lovely apple flavor that enhanced the overall soup. The Caesar salad had large chucks of Parmesan and the Sauerbraten was thick cut but still moist and flavorful. Definitely heading back soon to try more ! read more

Food: This was my first time at this restaurant and also my first time trying German cuisine, so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. Overall, the food tasted average to me, nothing bad, but nothing particularly memorable either. We started with the Kombinationen Platter as an appetizer, and that was actually the highlight of my meal. The sauerkraut and potato pancakes that came with it were amazing and ended up being my favorite things I tried that night. For the main course, we ordered the Veal Schnitzel with a potato dumpling and Spätzle. Without the gravy, everything on the plate tasted pretty bland to me, especially the potato dumpling. Once we added the gravy (which is incredible, by the way), the dish improved a lot. Still, the overall dish didn't wow me enough to want to return for the food alone. That said, others in my party enjoyed their meals much more and rated the food an 8/10. Service: We arrived as walk-ins on a Wednesday at around 6:30pm with a party of seven. Even without a reservation, the restaurant was very accommodating and seated us right away. Our server was extremely attentive and gave us helpful recommendations on what to order. A few people in our group arrived significantly late, but the staff remained patient and understanding the entire time. Since this was a celebratory dinner, we asked to take a group photo at the end, and the staff kindly turned on extra lighting so we could get a great picture. Everyone we interacted with was warm, friendly, and very welcoming. Overall: If you love German cuisine, I would definitely recommend giving this place a try. If you're not particularly into German food, you might find the dishes a bit underwhelming like I did. We went on a Friday night, 3 people, no reservation, and were seated right away. The staff, as well as our waitress, were so helpful and friendly! Since it was our first time, she answered all our questions and suggested some great dishes. We started off with the sausage sampler: Bratwurst, Knockwurst, pepper & cheese Bratwurst, chicken & apple sausage. They were all absolutely delicious! Definitely need to add this to the rotation! I wanted to celebrate something special and this was the perfect spot to do it. The server was attentive, sweet, and quick with service. I like how intimate yet homely the ambiance was! The Irish bangers and potato pancakes were cooked to perfection and were perfectly seasoned. When we arrived I second guessed my decision. The restaurant was packed, but everyone had a walker with them. It was an older crowd for sure. We had to sit at the bar because there weren't any tables left! Grey took care of us at the bar and he was fantastic. He was personable, efficient, and had a great personality. First time ever going to an authentic German restaurant and this place did not disappoint. The decor and feel of this place when you walk in felt like you're in a pub somewhere in Germany, it was very cool. The staff was so nice and attentive and took time to answer any questions we had about the menu, decor and really anything we wanted to talk or ask about. The food was excellent. Being that this was my first time eating authentic German cuisine I had no idea what to expect. Looking at the menu i knew I've heard of a couple things before, but everything else for the most part was all new to me. The food was really good, eveything came at looking and tasting delicious. Everything was very flavorful and tasted so fresh, like they were just cooked by your grandma in here kitchen. You could really feel the love that went into preparing everything. Been wanting to try this place for a while, and finally got to with a group of friends. It has a cute atmosphere with lots of beer steins on the shelves of the walls. It also had a decent size covered outside area in the back. We went on a Sunday evening, and they had a live singer singing outside, but no patrons were eating outside. They first gave us pretzel bites with mustard like other restaurants would give bread and butter. They were tasty. I tasted my friend's apple and onion soup and it was very yummy. I ordered Lemon Riesling Catch of the Day. It came with two sides. I chose the spatzle and red cabbage. It was a nice size and very tasty. Everybody at our table was happy with their meal.
