I paired it with a bratwurst on a pretzel bun and roasted broccoli. The whole combination made for a hearty and satisfying lunch. Great beer, good food, and a bartender who clearly knows how to make you feel welcome. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. It's not a large place by any means, but the coziness adds to the atmosphere. Next time I'm in the area, I will be back here, dragging coworkers along with me!

Just note, this is a legit country store, offering random canned items, dried goods, toys, collectibles, drinks, snacks, and even hot food. We saw a patron come in, looking for charcoal, and there was a bag hiding behind the front door! We stopped by, as we had heard about Mr. Jay's famous burgers - we ordered one to share, open to any toppings he recommended - ours came with fresh Romaine lettuce, sliced onions, a hot pepper spread, sliced fresh jalapenos, cheese, and mayo, all nestled in a locally baked bread. This was a simple, but a tasty burger! The freshly-ground beef is picked up every morning, from the slaughterhouse that is across the street; I don't really want to think about that all too much, but just know that what you're getting is some fresh proteins! Mr. Jay also grows his own peppers and such, so you'll taste the freshness! There are a few comfortable chairs around the store, so you can definitely just sit and enjoy your food, or take it to go - we opted to dine-in, and we almost fell asleep since we were that cozy and relaxed! HA! Mr. Jay is also known as the Mayor of Oella, so be sure to sit and listen to his stories - he's so kind, personable, and has a lot of history to share! I saw a published photo book of his, which I found super cool; we also received the town's community calendar and a sampling of a neighbor's homemade brownie! Be sure to stop by to grab a meal - we had heard that he makes amazing omelets, so we'd love to try that next time! This is a familiar place that updates the look and menu now and then, yet still feels like home. We often get a beet salad when it's available. Matthew's is scrumptious, with tender sweet juicy roasted beets, tasty grilled chicken, red onion slices and fresh spinach, tangy crumbled bleu cheese, and delightful candied walnuts, complimented by tart raspberry vinaigrette. By the way, it's gluten-free. We loved the rich cream of crab soup du jour, full of crab lumps and full of flavor, with a little spice from good old Old Bay. Delicious and dreamy. Their quesadillas were served a la carte as an appetizer, loaded with savory roasted chicken, heavy with a mild cheese and a lightly spicy flavorful thick red sauce, rolled in tender lightly seared flour tortillas. Generous and satisfying. Matthew's building dates from around 1862 as a station and hotel at the end of a horse-car line, before electricity! It's been through around 5 names over the years, and has been the Parsons family's Matthew's 1600 since 2004. We've felt comfortable and welcomed here for decades. It has plenty of free parking in their own lot. By the way, many of their already reasonable prices are discounted a little if you pay cash. That's a endearing way of keeping it real in Catonsville, only charging when it costs them.

Over the last few years their side salad went from having bacon and eggs to just lettuce , a couple carrots shavings, two sliced tomatoes and maybe two or three cucumbers. Saturday I was craving a steak and traffic was so backed up going to the restaurant I was originally going to, that I instead decided to just go somewhere close to my house. Upon sitting down I was told they has a berry mojito special so I ordered. It was not good so I only had two sips. Next I ordered the sirloin dinner that was on special. As soon as the sliced steal was placed in front of me I knew it would not be goid. It looked unappealing. Sort of like boiled meat instead of a grilled steak. I took a bite. It was so bad I asked for steak sauce. It was still horrible. I only ate two of the pre-cut slices and told the waitress it was by far the WORST steak I ever had and said I would have wings instead. The wings were good as always. This horrible meal ended up costing me $56 for the uneaten steak dinner, horrible mojito I did not drink, and the wings. The bartender was nice. I use to bartend and if I noticed a customer not drinking a drink I made, i would have asked if they wanted anything else, or I would have remade the drink. The bartenders were nice so I left an $8 tip . This ended up being the most expensive buffalo wings I ever had. I was exhausted after having a long work week and not having eaten breakfast or lunch so I just paid and left without complaining.

We must have waited nearly 45min before anyone took our order, after waiting close to a half an hour at a dirty table before anyone came to bus/clean it. Our questions about whether we should order at the bar or not were met with annoyance and a dismissive attitude. Once we finally got food, the burgers and wings were enjoyed overall. As the vegetarian at the table, I was disappointed by the lack of options. I settled for the "Veg" board, which was fine but felt more like a "girl dinner" than anything else with an odd assortment of components. The absence of any cheese or other spreads beyond mustard and a jam on the board was also notable. Sadly, ever since the switch in head brewer, the quality of brews at Black Flag has continued to go downhill. The IPAs are missing the mark, while the rest of the tap list is consistently unremarkable. Unfortunately, not sure we'll be racing to come back.

A nice old building of stone and dark wood my friend and I perused the menu: very New American with lots of Maryland seafood classics. I ordered the crab cakes with fingerling potatoes and coleslaw. The crab cake, though small, was mostly lump crab meat with very little bread crumbs and served with a remoulade. Very moist and flavorful. The coleslaw was slightly bland, but I enjoyed it none the less. And the fingerling potatoes were cooked and salted to perfection. However they were lacking any real fat: no butter or oil. Now, it just so happened that my friend had purchased a bottle of Rosemary infused olive oil a mere half-hour ago. A drizzle of this turned these dry potatoes into something of a revelation, but I really shouldn't have had to doctor the meal I pay for with outside condiments to make it truly enjoyable. My friend enjoyed a hamburger with caramelized onions that was cooked precisely to her order and she enjoyed it a great deal. So, clearly, not all menu items needed as much help. The server taking care of us was very on top for job and kept our drinks filled and us happy. I really wanted to give this place a higher score, but there were too many little things off. I think with a few tweeks to some of the menu options this could be a really excellent restaurant. But currently, it's just "fine." For the price (think thirty dollars for a typical entree) I expected better.
