I want to start this off by saying that as many times as we have dined at Matthews1600, I was ever so happy that I selected them as a place to have my 45th high school reunion! I went with a buffet as I knew people would be straggling in from many places. Everything was top notch. Todd Thomas and his staff were absolutely fantastic! I only had a few requests and they were all met with no issues whatsoever! My classmates were so impressed with the venue, everything was so nice, I got many comments on how well everything was put together and fresh. I will definitely remember Matthews in the future for any parties that I plan. The meals were very reasonable and the area of our reunion was just fantastic! Thanks again for making the reunion a success!

We've been coming to Matthew's for many years, sometimes weekly for trivia night. Food and service has been good and consistent. The Pasta Annapolis is a delicious seafood dish that I get frequently. My wife got the meatloaf this time and she said it was very good. Matthew's has a nice U-shaped bar. There's a decent cocktail and beer list. All things considered, this is one of the better restaurants in Catonsville.

Matthew's 1600 is a convenient and cozy restaurant. I came previously months ago for cocktails and was able to meet one of the owners. I told him I would come back with friends for lunch sometime. I was looking forward to returning however it was disappointing. The food was barely warm and just average. We ordered a Crab Cake sandwich and Cod Fish Filet with fries. The crab cake was broiled but it didn't seem cooked. It was cold and mushy. My friends said the Cod was okay but not warm and needed seasoning. The manager stopped at some tables to talk to customers but he didn't come to our table to ask how our meals were. I would have told him the food was cold and disappointing.

    Good food. Good service.

Good food. Good service. We had the mozzarella sticks and spicey string beans we delish. The pot roast was also good.

I looked at the menu and quickly chose a monte cristo to eat. I was intrigued by the "crush bar" on the cocktails menu. My first time to Maryland (that I remember in any case) do I decided I needed to try a flight of crushes. Orange, Creamsicle, Pineapple, and Strawberry Lemon. And you will have a hard time convincing me they even have alcohol..just yummy juice! Needless to say, my lunch was fantastic. And I read about the history of the location on the menu, and this place wins on all counts!! The service was great, and with a building from the 180's, how could we get better atmosphere? A great stop in our road trip!

My family and I dined at Matthew's 1600 randomly on a Friday night. My son visited the restaurant previously with a group of friends, so we allowed him to select the restaurant for the night. He did a pretty good job. I had two an order of mussels and two margaritas. The mussels were pretty tasty and the margaritas were nice and strong. My son and husband really enjoyed their dishes as well. The decor inside the restaurant left a lot to be desired. We were seated in a booth and the booth oddly moved when I sat down. It wasn't secured to the floor. The restaurant also has carpet, which looked old and dingy. Not sure how they keep up with cleaning the carpet in a restaurant. The ambience of a restaurant is just as important as the food, so that really took alway from the experience. A rehab is definitely suggested! Otherwise, my experience was decent.

I hadn't been here in years but I did remember they had great service, and they didn't disappoint me this time as well. We were able to sit in a private dining room and the decor was very classy and comfortable. The waitress made some recommendations that we followed and I'm glad we did. The food was good and very much Baltimore staples. I will definitely be back again soon.

In search of a good location to take my team, from work, to say thank you for all of their hard work, we settled on Matthew's 1600. I had no knowledge of this restaurant, in fact it was a suggestion from a co-worker of mine. I am so glad he did because the experience was really good. The staff was attentive, we got our parties food at a very efficient pace and everything was delicious. I think we've found a new local spot to frequent.

Matthews 1600 is a fantastic restaurant where you can feel very comfortable wearing casual or business casual attire. They feature a wide variety of appetizers, entrees and desserts that will satisfy anyone's palate! Pasta, seafood, beef, chicken or salads - You can't go wrong here! Matthews has a main bar area that is full service with seating all around with table tops. In the back is their dining room that gives a very nice warm and welcoming feel. This is a great choice for lunch or dinner - They also offer holiday specials during specific times of the year which I highly recommend to try! I can't say enough good things about this restaurant- We've been coming here for years. The staff is very friendly and so are the owners! Stop in and give them a try. You will not be disappointed!

I moved out of state but returned to the Catonsville area last week and stopped in for lunch. I had the reuben sandwich and have to say--all nostalgia aside--it was the best it's ever been. My brother got the basic burger and fries and I couldn't believe how thick the pattie was and the plate overflowing with fries. while some establishments can get lazy in their hometown familiarity, GL Shacks seems to only be getting better!

I went with the Half Soup/Half Sandwich combo, the Shrimp Salad Sandwich and the Ham & Navy Bean Soup was delicious. The shrimp salad was really good with big juicy shrimps; really well-prepared and seasoned perfectly. The soup had great flavor with way to much ham (yes I said, to much ham) I would loved to have more beans in the mix! My husband ordered the Shack Burger (medium rare with cheddar and bacon) and said it was a total winner. He loved the char-grilled flavor and said the patty was a great size. He did mention his hand-cut fries could have been a little hotter, but the texture and crispiness were spot on. We're already planning to come back to try other dishes, hopefully on a Monday to catch "Burger Day"!

The inside is a little cramped, and may be overstimulating for some with the TVs and lots of staff and customers (it's a slightly divey sports bar, what do you expect?). We ate outside, which despite the cool wind the night we were there, was much more pleasant. Our waitress was friendly and happy answered out questions about the menu. My kiddos got some items from the children's menu - sliders and tenders - and seemed to enjoy them. The whole family split some fried pickle appetizers. They were a little thick, but not too thick, and nicely fried with a tasty dipping sauce; I'd get this again. I got the Maryland crab soup. It was pretty standard; I've had better and I've had worse - nothing to write home about. My wife got the hot turkey sandwich, which was smothered in gravy. On a cool night, it was just what she wanted. There are some pretty standard cocktails as well as about a dozen beers on tap that included some local and some domestic brews. My waitress graciously let me see the whole list and snap a picture since I was being a bit indecisive at first. Overall, it didn't blow my socks off but nothing was bad either. The prices were fair and the service friendly.

Shrimp were good no wow factor, wings were good just plain but would have been better if they had a sauce and the burnt ends had more of a smoked bbq flavor which was different than usual but very tender and tasty. It was served with mixed vegetables and coleslaw. Veggies were ok and seasoned and coleslaw was to be desired. Not burnt ends is an entree on the menu. For entrees: crispy chicken sandwich with fries and chicken Mishkaki. Can I say, wow the portion required stretch pants! The sandwich; meat to bun is 20% more chicken than bread. It was seasoned and fried to perfection. The fries are in house cut and seasoned well too. The chicken Mishkaki is dish never tried before but reminds you of Nazan Halal's chicken with more of a rich tomato stew flavor with peppers, onions. It was about 8 to 10 skinless thin thighs seasoned and fork tenderness served in its own plate, then another plate with rice and the fixings. Think of a fajita sizzling plate and side plate of the fixings, same as this dish. I would definitely visit again! Apparently the tavern is connected to but not owned by the same folks at the brewery. It's also seemingly one of the only spots in town that's open seven days a week. Finding parking was surprisingly difficult on a Sunday night, but I circled around until I found a spot. The place seemed pretty packed, with folks waiting for tables, but since I was just there for the beer, I was sent upstairs to the bar. A couple of really nice bartenders were on duty and helped me right away. I got an amber beer which went down smooth, and I opted to get a pizza too. Heads up: If you're vegan you can basically sub out any pizza for a vegan option, but be certain to ask about ingredients, as no one pointed out the white sauce isn't vegan until I asked. I like spice and smokiness, so I opted for the Holy Smoke -- Alabama White BBQ, Tavern Blend Cheese, Cheddar, Smoky BBQ Sauce, Pulled Chicken, Pickled Jalapeños, Corn, Hardwood Smoke -- according to the menu. The pizza came out super quickly and it smelled like a campfire... in a really good way. The pizza was tasty and the crust was also realllly good. I ate half of it and took the other half to go, which ended up being another meal. And I can confirm it tastes good cold too! I'd definitely come back here, particularly on a warm day when the patio is open (it was raining pretty hard when I was there, so sadly, no outdoor seating). The people are super friendly and the menu definitely has a lot of options. If you're in Ellicott City, put it on your list!
