Just trying to get word out to support a local place that has been around for 30 yrs that has been impacted big time with the ongoing construction on 5th St. I ordered Mongolian beef, sweet n sour chicken, Pad Thai w/pork, eggrolls, fried wontons, Kang Karee and all were very good. The vegetable fried rice was so-so. And don't forget the Thai iced tea, a little sweet, but very refreshing in this heat. Service was good. It took awhile to get this large an order to go. It's been a long time since I've been here, not since 4 Seasons has come and gone. The restaurant is comfortable and quiet and they have booths which I like. We had satay's which I thought I got a picture of but must have been distracted, 2 sticks 7 bucks plus cooked well. The Lab was salty and had a funky texture, edible but not good. The soup was probably the best of the lot but was expensive at 17 bucks plus. The pad Thai the pork was cooked well but was a little sweet for my taste and needed lime, they also charged me a dollar extra for the egg. The pad Thai was acceptable but not a wow. Really I think it's not bad, but not great. I'm pretty picky though I've spent a good part of my life traveling through Southeast Asia and been to Bangkok more times than can count maybe 20. I've been going to Char's for over 20 years and they're my favorite Thai restaurant. My favorite dishes to order are the Pad Thai Chicken and Panang Curry which I usually get vegetarian but add chicken. They've always had very friendly staff and service has been great. When the ratio of customers get too high, the speed of service can slow down. I also enjoy the atmosphere. They redid much of the interior a few years ago & I like the changes. Two things that didn't change are the big southwest paintings with Buddhist themes added later are cool. The tables are covered in glass and usually have a theme presented by magazine cutouts or photographs. read more

There are few Thai restaurants in Tucson. There are even fewer good ones. Char's is authentic from its menu varety to the food itself. Did a chicken curry loaded with meat & generous rice, spicy as it should be. Enough to take home. Sampled the egg rolls. Filling almost seemed marinated, and it wasn't. Greasy. Thai iced tea- the way it should be. My big gripe is their site said serving until 830 when actually close @ 8am. Definitely a hole in the wall yet filled with about 6 patrons. Offer lunch specials. I'm not timely in submitting this review (as this experience was several months ago). . . as I simply forget to submit it . . . but here it goes. The first time I visited this restaurant was in 1996 (as we were stationed at DM). The food was exceptional (decor, not so much) that during our entire stay in Tucson (1996-1999) we frequented this restaurant at least once a week. We moved away in 1999 . . . only to return recently & this review is regarding my last visit to this restaurant. Since returning to Tucson, we've eaten here several times & the food was again exceptional. However, on my last (& final visit), we made an order to go . . . however, upon returning home, I realized that they gave us the wrong order. Upon realizing this, I called the restaurant (& spoke with a young female employee) & informed them of the situation. I mentioned that I lived 30 minutes away & would like to remedy this the next day (vs returning that day). I asked whether I should return the order in my possession -or- throw it away? To which the employee said "just throw it away & we'll take care of it" . .. so, I did. The next day, I stopped by the restaurant (to remedy the order) & was greeted by an older female employee (who I'm assuming does the cooking). Anyway, when explaining the situation to the older female employee, she stated to me: "Oh, no you must pay!" . . . I again fully explained the situation, to which she continued . .."you do not have the other order to return, then you must pay." It's because of this VERY poor customer service that I'll never return to Char's Thai Restaurant. read more

Being a small business, and an authentic Thai food restaurant, we were excited to give this place a try and were really disappointed that the food is actually... bland. I ordered a shrimp lo mein I think or just shrimp Thai noodles (something like that, this was actually a little while ago) and the shrimp was so over cooked that it turned to mush in my mouth upon chewing. Like rubbery, shriveled up shrimp that just instantly mushed up. Noodles weren't even very salty at all like you'd expect, luckily we ordered takeout so we were able to add spices when we got home but the shrimp was really gross... my boyfriend got pad Thai and let me try some and I will admit it was way better than my noodles but still just did not taste right. The one he ordered was supposed to be really spicy but it barely had any spice to it at all. I would actually like to give this place another chance soon and actually sit down and enjoy it there because they do seem like they're doing pretty well and I don't want to let this one experience dampen any possibility of any visits in the future. At 32 years, this is the oldest Thai restaurant in Tucson, and a nice little place at that. I had their chicken Pad Thai a while back, and it was excellent. Today, I stopped in for lunch, and I had the place to myself (Tuesday, at the lunch hour!). It made me wonder how they made it work, but it was quiet, comfortable, immaculately clean, and perfect for reading the latest Tucson Weekly. The staff was delightful. I had a red chicken curry lunch special, for $9. It came with soup (lemon grass veggie - unremarkable), an egg roll (pretty good), and a pile of steamed rice (just fine). I got the curry HOT, and it delivered! I was sweating when I left. Excellent flavor, too. It's not the best Thai food I've ever had, but it's tasty and fine for mid-town, and a good value for lunch. read more

As a vegan I have been searching for a Thai restaurant that has a decent number of selections and thought I would start with Char's Thai for my first attempt. I went at lunch time, the service was quick, and very friendly. I was able to order a lunch special from their vegetarian / vegetable section of their menu. I only tweaked it a little for my WFPB / Vegan desires. I ordered a Red Curry Thai with the Vegetable combo. (Sometimes I don't want the tofu - and I like having a veggie option.) The lunch special comes with rice, a vegetable egg roll and a cup of soup of the day. I ended up asking the helpful waitress to leave out the soup because that day it was egg drop. They provide a tray with a spicy dried spice mix and jalapenos. I like spicy food but Thai food can be real hot, so I find with Thai food I like to order it mild and then customize with the dried spice mix that is usually provided at Thai restaurants. My veggie red curry was very tasty - the veggies were fresh and it was delicious over my rice choice. Vegetable egg roll was nice and crispy as well. The only disappointment was on that particular lunch day, they did not have bananas... I was going to treat myself with a fried banana. Oh well..Next time. I will return to try more dishes and will remember to refresh my review then. read more

Birthday lunch for a coworker and Char's Thai was the celebration spot of choice. The four of us were greeted, quickly given a table in the dining room, handed menus and glasses of ice water. Super efficient and friendly service. Our culinary choices to be shared were Panang curry chicken (extra spicy please), Pad Thai with chicken (regular spice for the one wienie amongst us) and Pad Kra Prao beef (extra spicy) along with a bowl of brown rice and Thai iced tea all around. I'm not an expert on Thai food, in fact I was a Thai food virgin until today's lunch. With that said, I will tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered. The Pad Thai with chicken was delicious and slightly sweet, a very good choice for that wienie I mentioned. The Panang curry chicken was nice and spicy to where you feel the heat on your tongue for a minute after swallowing - good stuff. But the standout for me was the Pad Kra Prao beef. Tender strips of beef, perfectly cooked green bellpepper and fresh mint. Yummy. As mentioned by several other Yelpers, the decor is interesting. The tables have different themed pictures under the glass top and there is of course your traditional Asian decor. What cracked me up were the GIANT Southwestern landscape paintings on the wall. I can only guess that the paintings were there when Char's moved in and they didn't want to get rid of them. So what did they do to Asian-ize them? Well, one painting now has little warriors doing battle in the desert and the other now sports a massive temple as big as the mountains. It's actually quite funny. Pretty average Asian food. Tried two entrees: chicken with onion, scallion and chicken with mushroom, ginger; both were somewhat watery and sweeter than expected, onions were over-cooked, mushy. The fresh, flavorful, spicy kick that I enjoy in Thai cuisine was missing. Take out was quick and nicely packed. But I expected bold Thai flavors too. read more
