I stopped in while my son was in an nearby appointment to get my nails cleaned up with a no polish manicure. The technician did a great job and took me at my word when I said I wanted my nails cut short. Most places don't go as short as I'd like. After I asked for a 10 minute back/shoulder massage and it was great. She even started it with a heating pad on my shoulders. It ended with a scalp rub and moved into a brief face rub too. The only reason for leaving one star off is the cost. The massage was $35 and the manicure $20 which I feel is fair. I would've skipped the massage if I knew it would be that much. To be fair, I didn't ask the price ahead of time. Lesson learned. Overall, I would return if in the area again! read more

It was great that they can slip me in when I called for a last min pedicure appointment. However, I felt the person who did my pedi definitely rushed and she pushed my cuticles really hard, and I even felt a slight burn when the cleanser was applied on my nails. Not till the next day when I took a closer look, I found out three wounded toes, slightly cut, red and a bit swollen cuticle roots. It's really upsetting and now I worry about sanitation of the tools she used on me. read more

I was visiting for the day and had a few hours before my flight home, so decided to get a dip manicure. So, so, SOOO HAPPY I went to Charming! First, they took their time - no rushing (I was the only client there on a Monday afternoon). And unlike my spa back home, they did my cuticles AND gave me a shoulder AND a hand massage. WOW! All for just $50!!! And my nails looks great - I've been struggling to find someone who would make a dip manicure look light and smooth (despite the fact I asked for a need 4 coats) and they did it!!!! My friend told me about this place months ago but I hesitated to go because it wasn't that close to my house. I went to other closer places and have been disappointed by one thing or the other. So I finally walked into this place. It was mid AM, and not busy at all. Got my eyebrows cleaned up. Staff members were very very friendly. Again, english is a second language to most of the staff but that doesn't bother me at all. The "head lady" was really friendly in terms of even helping me pick colors for my nails since I didn't really have a set color in mind, but I had a pattern in mind. After my eyebrows, I saw for my pedicure, midway through another lady started on my nails (efficient) and I also enjoyed my foot massage. I got the gel nails and it was done very well. Better than the other places I've been to. While my nails dried, I received a lovely shoulder massage...really nice. Overall, I felt I like I got a mini spa treatment. I would recommend this place. Best nail place I've been to in PA. They were also voted the "Best of Philly" in 2004. Haha... just a little fyi. There is public parking in the back street located behind it. Keep in mind there are meters back there too! The staff is very friendly and not phony like some nail techs. Small but clean. Unlike some other places they do just as good of a job if you have two girls working on you at the same time. (As in one doing your nails while the other works on your toes). Yes, it might be a pricier than others, but are you going to get a neck/back massage when your nails dry? Right away your eyes are drawn to the nail polish wall. I remember the first time I came in and was shocked on how organized the colors are kept. It does help when trying to pick a color! "Do I want something so pink? Maybe I should go a shade lighter! Oh! It's RIGHT NEXT TO THIS ONE!" - that's typically what goes through my mind. I am usually given the latest People magazine when I get my pedis. I went here for a pedicure because they are open on sundays and there were many positive reviews. I would not go back. Many negatives: the space is not relaxing. The pedicure chairs face each other so my view was the open legs of a woman wearing a dress sitting across from me. Playing music on her cell phone. The salon tv was blaring a cooking show which was also not relaxing. The tubs for your feet are disgusting. They are lined in plastic and there are not water jets. It feels like putting your feet into a pond with seaweed. The foot and leg massage was well done. But the pedicure itself is sloppy with each nail a different length and messy polish application. And they charge $5extra to work on calluses. Isn't that a mainstay of a pedicure? read more

BEWARE!! Went in for a pedicure and to have my eyebrows cleaned up. Pedicure was sub-par and expensive. The woman who did my eyebrows literally took off half of my eyebrow after I specifically noted that I wanted a clean up (e.g. Keep the shape of my brows in tact). I was visibly upset, as I feel like anyone would be. No apology, no one in the whole place came up to me to address the situation in any way (I was the only customer in the place). The shining light of this salon is Gloria. Her warm personality and skill at doing nails are the only reasons I've kept going back to this salon. However, the owner, Susan, is not professional and caters to a "certain" Main Line clientele. Despite having set weekly appointments, Susan has intentionally and constantly overbooked my appointments to cater to Caucasian or Asian clientele. Whether they come in off the street without an appointment or have set appointments, they are always treated with the utmost respect and accommodated to the utmost degree. If you're a dark skin African American woman, don't bother going here. It doesn't matter if you're upwardly mobile. You won't be treated well. I will take my business elsewhere. read more

I was very pleasantly surprised by this place (and if you've been following my reviews, you know what a saga it's been finding a suburban nail place that I like.) When I first went in on a Saturday afternoon, it was empty except for one other customer, which usually sends me into a panic because I think we tend to associate empty places with bad places. However, I was greeted right away and shown to the nail colors. I decided to get a manicure and pedicure, and they began with the pedicure. It was your standard pedicure, which is all I really needed. Soon after, they started doing my manicure simultaneously, which was a little uncomfortable at times (reaching over with my opposite arm) but perfect from the point of view that I was in a bit of a rush. The ladies were friendly but not extremely talkative, which is just how I like it. The prices were comparable to other suburban nail places (and there's like 4 just on that block!), and it was finished off with a nice shoulder massage, which is probably what won me over. There was one extremely minor minus. The one lady told me that the yellow/gold color I picked was too pale for my fingernails (I'm extremely pale), but the other lady told her to just let me pick the color I wanted. At the end, they both said that it looked nice, and I liked how it looked, so no problem. I think I just prefer to pick my color and then have them go with it, but it's not even enough of an issue to impact the rating. I'll just assume she mentioned it to be helpful. Either way, I'll be back if I need my nails done in the 'burbs. read more

When you're a butch-ier lesbian and you want to get a manicure, it can be awkward. You don't want polish.You just want to trim and moisturize your digits so you can stop biting your nails. I went in on Wednesday and was told there was about a 15 minute wait. So I sit and wait. Once I'm in the chair she asks me why I didn't pick a color. I said I didn't want one and for the first time ever in a nail salon I wasn't judged about it. She made nice conversation and trimmed my nails and buffed them. The best part, it was only $12 for a manicure. I've paid more money for the same thing and gotten worse service. If you want simple and to the point, come here. read more

They give very thorough manis & pedis, finishing off a manicure with a brief neck & shoulder massage. Came here for a last minute gel manicure before a trip. This was my third stop on the Main Line because the first two places I checked into were unable to take me right away and I had to be somewhere by 5:30pm for dinner. They sat me down right away at 4:40pm and started to remove my gel nail polish. The technician didn't let it sit for long enough and tried to scrape off the gel before it had time to soak, taking some of my nail off with the polish. After about 20 minutes and rewrapping my nails multiple times, all the old polish is off and she can continue the manicure. She then starts to speak with another employee about my nails and begins to slow down with polishing, asking if she can remove what she just polished. I asked why and she said the base coat from the previous gel I had was too thick. My previous manicure was done by a place I have gone to for two years and the girl that does my nails doesn't work during the week so that's why I didn't go there in the first place. So I find this hard to believe but go with it. Now it's getting close to when I have to leave and she's taking off the polish and conversing with another woman there about my nails. The other woman begins to help her, filing and buffing my nails after the polish is removed while the other is repainting. Then she other woman starts recutting my cuticles for no apparent reason. They've now caught the managers attention who walks over and asks if everything is okay, which l then said I need to be somewhere. 5:30pm passes by and I don't get out of there until 6:15pm. My nails took over and hour and half. It's now 4 days later and the tips of my nails are already discolored. Learned my lesson and will make a reservation at my regular place from now on regardless if my technician is working or not! read more

Charming Nails has been completely renovated under its new owner Linda -- it looks nothing like the photos above! There are now 8 new pedicure massage chairs and 6 new nails stations. The salon has been completely refreshed and reconfigured so when getting a pedicure you no longer face another customer. Fortunately, the facelift only applied to the salon itself. The wonderful staff and excellent service have not changed. And they still give a great shoulder massage while drying. Highly recommend. read more

Another great pedicure today! Charming nails is always consistent. Great polish color selection, and it's usually easy to walk in without an appointment. I had a horrible experience here. I went the day before my wedding for a French manicure; the woman who did my nails was barely competent. When she tried to square off the ends of my fingernails, not only did she cut them crooked, but she didn't file them well, so the ends were still ragged when she put the polish on. She did a terrible job with the white tips--it looked like a kindergartner did them with white-out--and the rest of the nails were streaky & full of air bubbles. The only two things she said to me during the manicure (other than telling me to switch hands) were, "You pay now" and "Oh, I didn't see you were bleeding." She cut a large chunk out of one of my cuticles; two days later, it is still red, scabby, and swollen. (Of course, the finger she mutilated is my left ring finger. Just perfect for wedding photos!) Afterward, when she massaged my shoulders, she pinched so hard I still had red marks & broken blood vessels around my neck the next day. I told her she was hurting me, but it didn't make a difference. Best of all, she didn't put me under the drying lamps long enough, so I smudged one of the nails trying to get my keys out of my purse. I went straight to the drugstore to buy my own French manicure kit, then went home to touch up & re-file my nails. I cannot believe this place came highly recommended. From now on, I'll save my money and paint my own damn nails. read more

Pros: -It was a very relaxed environment -Nail techs were very friendly and did a thorough job -They have room for you and someone else to sit next to eachother (& face eachother when getting pedis) which I thought was unique -Great color selection! And they let you choose from the newest OPI collection too -They use hot stones to massage your feet/legs for pedicures -Reasonable prices -There's a parking lot behind it Cons: -My tech didn't massage me afterwards, yet my friend got massaged. So i think they usually do it and maybe she forgot this time -The parking is metered Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to anyone! read more

This place ripped me off! I tried paying with my credit card and they said it did not go through. I gave 2 other cards that they said would not go through. I did not have enough cash to cover my service. After a half hour of trying I had to leave but said I would return to pay. I returned and paid with a different card. Several days later while reconciling my account I discovered that the charge they said did not go through actually did go through. I called and they refused to credit me. I do not like being cheated, especially when I went our of my way to pay. read more

I was so disappointed. I went here two years ago and had a manicure which was fine. Since then I have been going to another nail salon much closer to me which is great, but is in process of moving to a larger store. Went back here in the interim. It took my nail tech one hour to remove my polish and in the process she broke three nails which she tried to repair. She said she had been working there one year but must have been new as the tech next to her kept glancing over to see what she was doing. It took her two hours to do my manicure and afterward they charged me an extra $10.00 because it took so long! The nails she repaired are splitting and I will never go here again.
