I had gone to this place for almost 18 years. For approximately 12 of them I had Sonya do my nails and she was incredible. However, today I witnessed something which made me sick to my stomach. Until now I went 4 days before Valentine's Day I got tips with gel polish and a gel pedi and my polish on my nails started chipping the same night. I've lived in this area for over 8 years and have gone to this spot since. Over the years the shop has been spruced up and their prices have raised to match. Just went in today for a manicure that is now $10 (was $8 for as long as I can remember), and the manicurist cut my cuticles to the point of drawing blood. I recognize the risk that comes with getting them trimmed, but I've never had this problem before. The woman seemed ambivalent towards the blood, proceeding to clean my nails with acetone that nearly shot me through the roof. What gives? Place used to feel much more welcoming. While it might have fancy new decor, the basic fundamental of friendly service seems to have deteriorated. I will not be returning. read more

I've been going to this salon for 6 years and been a loyal customer. They have new young girls working there and I gave the girl a chance and she did a terrible job. I wasn't too upset because I know she's new. I had to ask the manager to paint my nails over. I came back today and was here before 2 people and they let me get skipped. I asked Erica who is one of the nail techs to do my nails because she always does and was available and she took a customer who came after me and did not want to take me. Use to love this place... Until I saw an unwanted visitor crawling around on the floor. And no it wasn't a "water bug." When I let the girls know they chuckled and started talking in Spanish. None of them decided to kill it. So therefore I'm sure there's a nest somewhere in the nail salon. Needless to say...I won't be going back! AND last but not least, the green scrub thing that they use to wash your legs/feet with. Welp, I've seen them scrub the tubs with it too. So beware when it gets to that point in the pedicure. RUDE!! RUDE!!! RUDE!! When one enters and ask about a service you're told "you have to wait." No welcome, no nothing. After waiting a LONG time I then began my service which entailed soaking off a nail wrap. I explained to her that I didn't want my nail material stripped down to nothing (which happened before) and asked her if I could soak for another minute. She then took another customer and refused to continue to complete my manicure. I was told "you have to wait" until the customer that she was serving was over. So, yes, I had "to wait" TWICE. I left sans a tip and will NEVER RETURN!! I also notice that they reuse files, scrubbers and other tools from person to person without cleaning them. Other salons now use clean unopened packets of tools with each customer. I can't wait until this business changes hands and they get more professional staff. read more

When i went to pay with my card she asked if i wanted to add a tip on my card and i told her my amount and she proceeded to say "that's it" like if she did a good job to deserve any more. Charming Nails wasn't my first choice in Fort Greene when I was looking for a place to get my pedicure, but I stumbled upon it because another salon closer to my place was closed. But boy am I glad I found it because it was one of the best pedicures I've had in a while. I got the basic $15 pedicure, but it definitely wasn't your "basic" pedicure. Not only did they do everything you would expect them to, they also scrubbed off all the dead skin on the bottom of my feet (in such a way that even though I am super ticklish, I was able to endure), exfoliated my legs, and best of all...they used parafin wax on my heels!! I am kind of a germaphobe, so I couldn't help but be a little grossed out when they started scrubbing my legs using the green scrubber towel, because I kept thinking about who they last used it on, and how they cleaned it afterwards. But once I got over it, it was nice to have super smooth legs. And as far as the parafin wax goes, they put individual warm wax in sandwich bags and put your heels in it, so it's much more sanitary than dipping your feet in a communal pot of wax. I got everything I asked for and more, and will definitely be back if I'm in the area again. Next time, I might bring my own green scrubber towel though, just for my own peace of mind :) read more

Five completely well earned stars! I came here for a gel mani & regular pedi. The women were friendly and got me seated immediately. The pedicure was great - including lots of massage, hot towels, etc - and the woman doing my manicure actually did it at the same time. Both look excellent. The work was not sloppy or rushed. And although there was a steady flow of customers, everyone was greeted and helped quickly. On a whim I added the 10 minute back massage for an extra $10 and holy freaking cow. Angela (who did my massage) is better than most deep tissue massage therapists I've paid for. No kidding. HIGHLY recommended. It almost trumps the nail work. I tipped really well because the service merited it. This will be my new go-to place in the 'hood. read more

Charming carries a selection of premium polishes, beautifully color coordinated; unlike that last place I visited which had dead insects sprinkled along the shelves of old crusty bottles of swap meet polish. A row of comfy looking massage chairs for pedis. Clean facility and pleasant touches like possibly faux plants and ceiling fans. Friendly service. Deep tissue massage to cap off your treatment. My mani was performed quickly but w/ precision. It's gorgeous. And at the end of a hard days work, that lil' deep tissue massage is just want I need. All for $8, why not? For a mani/pedi combo, I might stick w/my usual spot for $17 (it's $26 here), but I'll definitely return for an occasional neighborhood beauty splurge. read more

Living in NYC all of my life, I have tried numerous nail salons in many different neighborhoods and price ranges, and I must say, "Charming" is one of the best I've happened to stumble upon. Since discovering it, I have not used any other salons since! Roberta, the owner, is friendly, polite and professional, as are the rest of the staff (for the most part). The nail polish selections impressed me with high quality brands and a variety of colors that have NOT been watered down with acetone to last a little longer. Price-wise, it's a little expensive, but totally worth it in my opinion as the pedicures last a long time and the girls are thorough in their technique. I LOVE their massages, and selection of colors. Not to mention, I never have to wait more than 10 minutes to be seen! Would've given 5 stars, however, they lose one star as the quality of nail technicians really varies. After a not so great experience with one of the other girls doing my french tips, I now exclusively use Roberta for my tips and gel manicures. I hadn't been here in like 5 months. I used to live in Clinton Hill and was there almost weekly but moving to Bed Stuy really didn't give me a lot of flexibility to come back during open times. That being said, I love love love this place and its not for a lack of being able to be there. I was a little disappointed when an older gentleman came in and he wasn't attended to quickly and I saw his sadness, so I told the young women, they're younger than me.... and kind of told them they have to be careful because other non spanish speaking customers could see the exchange and see it as a negative interaction. Anyway, we moved on and Mari my pedicurist, new to me anyway, went to town! Dude can I say joy, joy, joy in a pedicure. She also gave me a 10 minute foot massage because I was having surgery the next day and the stress was killing me. I was really impressed with the place again, which reminded me why I used to go so often. If you want to feel relaxed not rushed, and feel like you paid what you got for and more, go visit them. This was my first time here and it's one of the only places open on a Monday in Clinton Hill and I was not disappointed. The women that work there are so sweet and amazing, just the nicest people. I got a mani/pedi, they have a nice selection of colors, the massage chairs are nice and they did a great job all for $26, can't beat that. At the end, they put my socks, shoes and jacket one (even zipped my jacket)...honestly so sweet! Went here for a gel manicure because there was a long wait on a Sunday afternoon at every other place in the area. Was thrilled it was only going to cost $25! However, this was the fastest, most rushed gel manicure I've ever had done, which should have tipped me off to the quality of the service from the get go. Less than 24 hours later my gel was peeling!!! On not just one, but 4 fingers! My friend who went with me had the same experience. - even worse, her manicurist painted the gel all over her cuticles during initial application. This is my review for a full leg + bikini wax. Overall - great price, fast service, no waiting time, and it looked good afterward! As soon as I walked in as asked for a full leg wax I was taken to the waxing room, so no waiting time at all! The wax was also done very quickly, probably less than 30 minutes (I wasn't timing, though). The only reason they got four stars instead of five was because they were very business-like... less personable. Perhaps it was a language barrier, but usually I like talking with the lady as she waxes. It makes the experience somewhat more pleasant, don't you think? Good pedi & Mani but I felt rushed. For $26 I expect to get a enjoyable pedi but they do ur mani at the same time so you can't just lay back and enjoy cuz u have to keep moving ur hands. How do you mess up a mani pedi? I got a less skilled nail tech. I understand that they hire cheaper labor, but my tech LITERALLY spoke no English. Explaining or asking for anything was difficult and required a translator. Like me saying "lotion" and "feet" required her to get back up and me to have to dig in the trenches for my high school Spanish. Bringing me to the point that she didn't lotion my feet before getting to paint them. So I stop her and ask her to lotion which became a 4 person conversion. Where they tell me I have to pay for a massage to get my foot lotioned. She's saying she put it on, I'm saying she didn't lotion my whole foot. So I get the massage, which was terrible. Now I'm mad. My friend who referred me here and is a loyal customer, tells me to complain to the owner, which I don't have the patience to do. Then trying to explain to her to clean the nail polish on my skin was an issue, the point I just said gimme the check, no mani, I'm done. So rather than leaving feeling relaxed, I paid $45 (she told me $42, then charged me $43 plus a service charge, which I am too tired to fight about) for aggravation. Also, they weren't very kind or welcoming. Really felt like a dressed up "get em out" salon. And I went in the middle of the day! 2 stars because 1 tech was holding her Customer's baby. read more

I have been a customer at this salon for 2 years and the service has gone down hill. Today was the final straw. The nail tech cut up my cuticles and put on way too many coats of nail polish. All the ladies at the salon are very nice but that doesn't make up for the laziness and lack of profession. They give you the young and unexperienced technician while the good ones sit in the back and fold foil. My toes look worse than when i came in, I didn't even bother to let the polish dry because I'm going somewhere else to get my feet redone. read more

Meanwhile another women came in who had done the same thing- she was told the wait time and left to come back for that time, and they said she should've waited and denied having said she could leave. I frequented this salon for years and thought it was a neighborhood gem--quality nails, kind service and affordable prices. But when I returned this week after a few months away I was disappointed. They've stopped taking credit cards, it feels run down, the staff has changed and there is no attention to customer service. After I got a mani-pedi and dried my nails, I had trouble getting someone to help me with my shoes and coat (I'm pregnant and also didn't want to ruin my polish). I was the only customer there, and about 5 nail techs were congregating in the back while my own tech was on her cell phone. love the people that work here- but I can't stand the utter stench of the Gel nails anymore that crap is totally toxic and they don't have any ventilation - I had to leave mid pedicure because 4 women were getting gels all at the same time and I almost threw up.... I had been going to this place for years as the prices are good and they do a nice job. Angela is wonderful as are several of the other girls. I have stopped going, however, because I observed a very unsanitary practice which makes me question other practices. They use a green exfoliating mitt on your legs and feet, and then when the pedicure is over, they wipe down the sides of the basin with it, rinse it out and use it on the next person. Gross!!! The gel manicures also have not been lasting very long, chipping within 3 days - and i have witnessed on several occasions customers coming back in and complaining about their next day chipped gel and the response is, sorry. I dont think i will be going back for any services other than a massage from Angela until I see more sanitary practices. read more

Anyway, I felt perfectly safe coming here, it's not ghetto by any means. Lots of different people as clients and walking the streets. Black, white, Asian and Hispanics people. I've been to many nail salons in VA and I must say for prices this cheap it would've been in the dumps back home. I thought it would be dirty inside but nope...very clean and I'm a neat freak. The ladies inside were super nice too. I waited maybe 5 minutes top and it was a Sunday. The lady who did my mani/pedi, Angela took her time explaining everything and made me feel right at home. I never remember people's name but her's is branded because of the great service I received. My biggest complaint is the brands they use but so far my nails are faring well. I also received a lip and chin wax as well (no double dipping here). Overall, I paid 45 bucks for everything, super cheap in my book considering the quality, the timing and the amount of services ( I also had gel polish removal). Back home I would have paid at least 80 to 90 bucks for all that. While I waited for my nails to dry I received a quick back massage, amazing. Overall, I will be back. No doubt. read more

I've only been here twice but it's good service and the little back rub they give you once your mani and/or pedi is done is just a nice touch... really it's a teaser for one to get a massage and it does work. I believe I have had Angela both times and she is great- her massages are strong which I tend to like but you can of course ask for it to be softer. I dunno, good prices, close by me. An $8 mani? That's doable! Their hours are M-F 10am-8pm, Sat 930am-8pm and Sun 10am-730pm. I wanted to post this info because I couldn't find it here already?
