Just moved into the area and needed to find my new neighborhood nail spot. There's not too much close by and when I called another nail salon, they quoted me $40 for a gel mani. That's more expensive than some places in the city! So decided to give Charming Nails a try, even with the 3/5 rating and I'm so happy that I did. I'm honestly shocked by how low the rating is given my experience here. Yes, it is a no frills nail salon but the prices match ($43 total for a gel manicure that was done impeccably and a just as perfect regular pedicure). The space is clean, sanitized, everyone is wearing masks, and very friendly/cordial. I am a perfectionist when it comes to manicures and my nail technician (Erika) did a perfect job. I have zero complaints- she took her time, was really careful and detail oriented and my manicure/pedicure couldn't be better. The place was almost completely full for a Friday afternoon and my personal experience is that I did not see them treat any one customer differently than the next. Everyone was also busy with their own customer, so I did see some people enter and not immediately get a boisterous hello. But it was not a malicious ignoring of guests! I think if everyone is busy, you just need to talk to the owner (Asian guy in the front) who will assign the next available tech to you. I had the worst manicure experience I've ever had at Charming Nail. My first manicure was done so poorly that there was nail polish all over my fingers and cuticles. I assumed it would be cleaned up with nail polish remover at the end, but instead they asked for my credit card as if the service was complete. I complained to the manager, and to his credit, he agreed that it wasn't acceptable and redid the manicure. Unfortunately, that's where the positive experience ended. The entire time he was redoing my nails, he had a terrible attitude. At one point I paused for about 30 seconds to send a text letting someone know I'd be late to my next commitment because I had to get two manicures instead of one due to the original poor work. The manager actually raised his voice at me, saying I was wasting his time, that he had other customers, and that I was being disrespectful. To make matters worse, while working on my nails he cut my cuticle badly enough that it bled. When I instinctively pulled my hand away because it hurt, he accused me of having "a lot of attitude." I understand that mistakes happen, and I appreciated that the manager was willing to redo the manicure. However, there is no excuse for speaking to a customer that way or treating them so disrespectfully after the salon had already acknowledged the original manicure was unacceptable. On Saturday, I had the WORST experience EVER at Charming Nails & Spa. I've been a customer for over TWO DECADES. I truly miss James, because the new owner is a hot mess piece of work! After getting a pedicure, when I tried to pay with card - the male owner claimed that my card was declined and wanted cash instead. When I only had $20 in cash, magically the card machines worked and the balance was able to be pulled from my debit account (which had enough to cover the full amount). Confused, and distracted to see what was happening with my card - I didn't leave a tip. However, TIPPING ISN'T MANDATORY!!!! As I left the shop, this man not only followed me down the block towards the corner of Lafayette Ave, saying that "I clearly didn't like the service because I didn't tip." When I asked to confirm, "Are you following me?" He then said that I am no longer welcomed back because I didn't tip. I snapped his photo. I went straight home, called 311 to file a complain with NYCDCWP and the Better Business Bureau. I then shared his photo with the Police Precinct to make a police report for harassment. If you like your nails done, with a side of harassment, inflated prices, and aggressive behavior - this is your place. read more

They let me come in early because I was in a rush and they finished a LOT of work in a short amount t of time and with amazing results. Everyone was so nice and the rest of the customers were regulars who had great a rapport with their techs. Also I've never heard of a gel mani in a clean, fast place for $30 in NYC. I never have lick with my fills. At the end the man was rushed. He didnt have the right color for mt fill & aomething was wrong with the clear gel overlay. It was all bumpy. I lived 2 blocks away from Charming when it first opened. I went back a week ago and was shocked. Service has gone downhill, and so has the quality of their manicures. My gel mani which was supposed to last two weeks started peeling at Day 6. I thought it was just me, but my friend went there and hers lasted a day longer than mine. They spent a whole 8 minutes on my boyfriend's manicure. Eight minutes. Plus I noticed a huge difference in how customers were treated, based on their race. I observed three examples of different treatment for walk-in customers. And to add insult to injury, I was charged a credit card fee even though my bill was nearly $50 and I'd given a generous tip. I cannot speak more highly of this place. Firstly, phenomenal prices!! Gel manis are only $25, and I got this beautiful magnetic gem polish that has lasted perfectly for over 2 weeks. The owner/manager of the store is so kind and funny, all the prices are unbeatable. My gel pedicure was $50 (I paid for an extra honey service) and Erica was HILARIOUS, and entertained all of my friends. Two adult men were also getting mani-pedis and the whole environment was very supportive and fun, now my roomates and I always return for the best prices and service. read more

I only come for Sonia. The other nail techs are nowhere near as professional. I'm here now and the tech redid 3 nails, one 3 times, because she didn't paint the sides and piled on 4 layers of polish, one layer over the top coat. She used so much pressure with the top coat that she removed the color. She cut my cuticles, without asking, then left skin she cut hanging on the nail bed. It was so rough that i flinched multiple times. She rushed through my pedicure in 17 minutes after starting with my hands then seeing a free pedicure chair. There was nobody waiting until half way through the pedicure, someone with Judy showed up. I used Judy once, never again. Too rough and nasty attitude. Me and two older ladies discussed Judy's bad attitude that day and I didn't use her again after that. I really need to give up on all of them except Sonia. If I had more time I'd have this woman redo a 4th nail where she missed the sides. I don't know her name but used her once before. She's the one full of compliments about being beautiful and having beautiful nails....I suppose to throw me off that she isn't good at doing nails. Walked in and was immediately seated for a gel manicure. Everyone was very friendly! The woman doing my nails did an incredible job. She payed great attention, left my cuticles perfectly neat, and my gel looks flawless. I had slammed one finger in a door and broken the nail, so she built up a tip on that finger for me that looks so natural (I bet you can't even tell which one!) While waiting I was given a back massage, warm towel, and hand massage, too. Excellent service! All for only $25. If I could leave zero stars, I would. Horrible service, absolutely unprofessional. I went in only for a soak-off of my full-set and ended up leaving after spending almost one and a half hours with my nails still on and extremely dry hands. The guy James initially used the wrong nail polish remover and after another tech changed it, I waited with my hands soaking for about 50 minutes before deciding to leave. When I said I needed to go, James tried to yell at me for his mistake and blame me for him using the wrong product. Worst pedicure I have ever received, the stone was cold and she ran it over my leg once, she overflowed the water In the pedicure bowl THREE times in a row and flooded the entire place. Then as I look at my nails when they are done, they are messy and horribly painted. I have white polish all over my toes. It looks like a child did them. Then after they said it would be 30$ they charged me 50$? And when I tried to tell the guy at the front that he lied about the price he was very rude to me. Charming gets five stars for a few reasons- their prices can't be beat (trust me, I've been around for several years and around this area and surrounding, their regular mani/pedi prices are the best). My nails are always gorgeous when I get out of here and I get tons of compliments! See picture of my regular mani ($7). Rachel did those!! She takes her time and is precise. Everyone here is so sweet and nice as opposed to some other salons where they're aggressive and trying to get you in and out in a hurry. This is a no frills place. Don't expect candles and white robes- you want that you need to go somewhere else and pay more. For price and quality, you can't go wrong here! I keep going back because This is the only place in the neighborhood. my nail bed look like it's caked with gel and it appears to have little black dots/bubbles on each nail. I think you have to be very strategic about who you go to but I haven't found my person yet. So Annoying! This cost me Soooo... I tried again. NOT A PLACE FOR ACRYLICS. I've been to Charming Nails a couple of times and have had varied experiences each time, usually dependent on who did my nails. Today was the last straw though. I got a pedicure, which was pretty basic but the lady cut my toe nails so short that it's uncomfortable and doesn't even look right. I tried to keep faith and still allowed her to give me a full set of acrylics. This was a bad decision, especially being a perfectionist when it comes to my nails. Even before she started doing them, she cut my nails down so low to the point that a couple of them began bleeding. She continued with the acrylics and I had to coach her trough the whole thing. I wanted coffin shape which is far from what I received. By the time I kept telling her what to file, they didn't look so bad and it was time to begin the painting. I got a basic white Essie color, so I thought this would be simple. The woman could not even handle the paint job. Parts of my nail look extra thick because she left globs of paint on my them and then part of my nail isn't even painted near the edges. Overall I am disappointed with this experience and it is not worth your money. Giving two stars because the woman was sweet despite her inability to do my nails properly. read more

It's diagonal from the Lafayette Gardens housing project, near Pratt Institute, and directly across from the G train at Classon Avenue. It's also blocks away from Sputnik and Rustik which are relatively popular haunts. The owners are extremely nice; they'll remember you, and it's dirt cheap in comparison to spots on Myrtle like Polish Bar. I used to go here because it's convenient. More than a few times I said I wouldn't go back because the quality of work is poor & customer service is lacking. After last Sunday, I'm DONE! The owner wasn't there when I arrived and the women acted like they didn't want to service me. The woman in charge was a nail tech I had previously had an issue with (see paragraph below). She was in no rush to assign someone to me and even put someone who came in after me ahead of me. Finally she assigned someone to give me a mani/pedi and the quality of service was bad. This woman barely clipped my cuticles and her filing was shoddy. My polish started chipping the next day. Maybe they do good work with gel and acrylic, but they are horrible with natural nails. A few months ago, I went for a mani/pedi and the nail polish on 5 of my fingers and 1 of my toes chipped within 2 days. I went to have it rectified explaining how this shouldn't have happen and they acted like it was not big deal. And they tried to charge full price for a polish change when they had given me inferior service. The girl who originally gave me the manicure acted like she was mad at me. And the owner was bothered, but I told him I came there often (he's seen me before) and he should provide better customer service. He gave me 1/2 off once he got the point. From that point on I tried to bring my own polish. And I typically go to better salons now and only come here when pushed for time or desperate. However I will not be back. Don't have time or money to waste. I world rather pay more for a better experience and a mani that looks good & lasts. IF you go call ahead and make an appointment with the Hispanic woman, I think her name is Sonia. She makes sure you get a quality service. Erica's good too - book with her as well. This place is really clean. However, the technicians are not that well trained at all. They do not know how to properly clean cuticles or file and cut nails. They are all really nice. Their massage chairs are to die for. However, all of those pleasantries does not override the fact that I want good looking nails when I leave. Some of them have trouble applying polish. This place is not worth it if you want long lasting nails. Another downside are their products. They use cheap powder for fillings. After I would do my fillings there within a week I would need another one. It is not worth it. I currently go to a place that is less money, less cute looking than Charming Spa and my nails come out looking awesome. Aura is only one part of an establishment. This nail place is a nightmare. I went in to get a manicure and nail tech began using dirty tools on my hands. The only way I realized this was from the built up dead skin on one of the tools she used on me. I asked her to clean them and I don't even think she cleaned them correctly. She didn't even do my nail design correctly. Someone else finally stepped in and then she had the nerve to keep the $3 change as tip. I didn't even make a big deal as I would never go there again. So torn. I have to get mani pedis for my work. I've been here once before and my sister just got a mani pedi and we were so pleased with the results. However, I went in today and re-painted my own nails not even an hour after having them done at charming nails and spa. I first had to tell the woman to stop grinding the file into my skin, my nails feel rough around the edges and are not filed well. I have a visible cut on my finger and she went over it with the nail polish remover which burned!!! I became nervous and asked her not to cut anything. I come here all the time because it's 1/2 a block from my house. I'm always greeted and treated kindly there. Typically I have received good service, but will admit there have been occasions when I was disappointed. Most recently I decided to try the crystal wrap before heading out on vacation. It was not as polished of a look as I'd hoped for by the time it was done and within 2 days I had nails coming off while on my vacation! I was furious since this is not a cheap service. When I got back I explained to Gene, the owner. The older woman who did my nails was also there. Both were extremely apologetic and Gene mentioned he would upgrade the crystal they use. Apparently, it is not a popular request to have that done there. Gene did my typcal natural nails with gel manicure beautifully and without charge. I appreciated that. I have seen them have disagreements with customers, but i am always pleasant there and always receive the same in return. I keep going back. read more
