1-Star Review I had a very disappointing experience at Beauty Charm in Hackensack, NJ this past Saturday. My appointment was at 12:00 PM, but I called ahead to let them know I'd be a little late. I arrived at 12:30 PM and was met with a very unfriendly attitude from the owner--she gave me a very angry look and was not welcoming at all, even though I apologized for being late. She said she would fit me in between clients, and I accepted that. Monica, my hairdresser, asked the owner for the formula for my hair color and went to the back. When she applied the color, my scalp started to burn badly. I told Monica, and she said it would go away, but I had never experienced that kind of burning before. To make things worse, the final color was completely wrong--much darker than the chocolate shade I usually get. My scalp was extremely dry and irritated afterward. During the hair wash, water ran down my back and left me soaked. I was supposed to get a blow-dry, but instead, she sat me under a dryer and said it would help because my hair was long. But it was obvious she did this just to take another client. After waiting too long, I had to leave without my hair properly finished. The entire experience was unprofessional, rushed, and uncomfortable. I felt like Monica had to follow whatever the owner said, and there was no concern for my comfort or satisfaction. Review Update During COVID I admit that I use to get my eyebrows threaded religiously every other week so when the pandemic hit and this place closed, I was beside myself! Luckily, when they were getting ready to re-open they gave me a call and I happily made my eyebrow appointment! Prices had went up from $8 to $15 initially since many establishments had been hit hard and were trying to recover but price went down to $12. This is still a great price if you ask me. They require you make an appointment prior to coming which they adhere too as I almost never have to wait and they now have plastic in between each chair. Your temperature is taken once you arrive and you also fill out a form for tracebility which makes me feel safe. They also have hand sanitizer and all the chairs are wiped down between customers. Parking is always tricky even though they have a parking lot but sometimes hard to get too since there is a lot of construction in the area. Review based on eyebrows and to me this is still the best place to get them done! read more

I got a pedi done and Angela did a great job! The only reason why this place gets a 4 star instead of a 5 star review it's because they don't have a "nail dryer" so I had to sit there waiting for the nails to be dry on their own. This is the first place I've been without a UV dryer. Second thing I didn't like it's CASH ONLY!!! Thanks God I had a $20 bill but that left the girl who did my nails with only a $2 tip which I believe it was too low, I wanted to give her $6 and although they have an ATM machine there, the fee is $2.50 and then my bank was gonna charge me also an additional amount. So although the service was excellent, I think this place should improve their logistics. Everyone takes CC's, everyone has a UV dryer. Sorry, they should get with the times! If they would had taken CC's I would had done my eyebrows and my manicure. They lost on the additional business. read more

The salon has a bunch of safety measures in place such as divided between each station, plastic to cover the sink when your hair is washed (changed between each client), and of course the staff are wearing masks. I came for the first time to get a blow out from Angie and I was very satisfied. The only thing I didn't prefer is that the shampoo smelled very chemical based and some of the products used / displayed look like they aren't salon products but rather products anyone can buy at the store. Tatiana. That's what I'm going to name my daughter (if I am to have one). When my (imaginary) daughter asks me how she got her name, I'm going to tell her the story of the hairstylist that I almost left her mother for. I'm going to talk about how Tatiana was this sweet and quiet middle-aged Hispanic woman who cut my hair and did such a great job that I sat in the car afterward just rubbing my head in amazement. The place is full of Eye-talian and Hispanic female employees (and one man who appears to be the proprietor) and a bunch of older white women customers. I was the only male customer and the only reason I even happened to be in there is because my cousin was getting her... something or other waxed, I didn't pay attention when she told me. I asked if they do men's haircuts and they looked at me like I was stupid for asking such a silly question (cash only though, heads up on that). The lady at the front hollered for Tatiana, and this small unassuming woman did what she does best. She took what I said (which was very little) and then apparently read my mind and took care of the rest. And she took her sweet time, like she was putting icing on a cake or something. She went over every spot on my brown head with the precision and attention to detail that I had all but given up on ever receiving without paying oodles of money. She even used a straight razor to clean up her work at the end. Who does that anymore? No one I ever wasted my money on in the past... The total came to $15.00 (tip included). Now I will be forever spoiled on all future haircuts. New Jersey, I come back not for your malls or your diners. I come back for your women... who cut hair. read more

I have been going here for about 5 years. Rona did my hair religiously, color, highlights and cut. This time around I wanted red with highlights and long layers. Needless to say almost $200 later I had nothing remotely close to what I wanted. I thought maybe she was having a bad day but honestly that shouldn't be my issue. I can't believe she let me walk out looking the way I did. I had to find another salon to correct and redo my hair and that was another $300. Eyebrow review: I got to Sylvia and I love her. She always takes good care of my eyebrows and know exactly how to make the eyebrows symmetrical and never over threads. With that being said since Covid-19 the prices went from 9 (i think) to 15. That's a 60% increase in the price. I think for the location, never any parking, and they don't really respect appointments it's overpriced. I know it was the owners that decided that but it's a bit high for the location. read more

Sad , Tatiana the stylist she is the best she makes you looks beautiful, I always suggest her get her own salon ......BUT the owner Franco and his daughter of this place no professionals they change the price every time when I come of course the price increase and Franco mess up my color. Poor management. After calling to check the hours for eyebrow threading I was told to come to the salon. He advised someone would take me even if they were about to close. I drove from mahwah to hackensack with 10 mins before closing. The guy I spoke to was there when I got there and told me to go to the back where one of the girls would take care of me. Lol yeah right ! They bitched at each other saying you take her, no you take her leaving me really uncomfortable. I walked away from them pissed the hell off. It's a hood spot so what did I really expect. As I walked out the man who I believe is part owner says to me what happened. I said they won't take me. He responded come back tomorrow then. My favorite is Rehaza. She really listens to how I want them done and doesn't take it upon herself to do whatever she wants with my eyebrows. I love charms!! No one does a blow out on my hair like Valerie. Frank is a great owner and takes the time to get to know his clients. They even keep customer cards that they use to keep track of services you received. It's hard to find that at a salon that doesn't charge and arm and a leg. Whenever i go people are constantly coming in and out for threading and their eyebrows look great. They also do manicures and pedicures but I wouldn't recommend getting one. Came here based on reviews for this place. I needed a quick haircut, nothing special. I didn't realize this place is huge!!! It has about 8 haircut stations and all were full. The have 2 mani stations that were full and girls in the back threading and waxing. Glad to see this place so popular. You can tell there were many regulars there. They took me with no appointment. I only waited for about 5 mins. The shampoo girl didn't speak english but man she can wash well. My stylist was so nice and sweet. She did do a great job blowing out my hair. I feel it was a bit overpriced. I paid $40 but felt like I should of only paid about $30 or under... Anyways it was still good and the owner was really nice. read more

You get what you pay for. By far the lowest salon prices I've seen for waxing but the rooms are tiny and cramped with people waiting since they accept walk-ins (don't expect anything upscale or fancy) and they don't use gloves (even for Brazilian wax) she did disappear for a bit so I can only hope she was washing her hands between services. Don't get me wrong, the woman who waxed me did an awesome job (I forgot her name, sorry) compared to people I've gone to at other places, but if you're used to the cleanliness, professionalism and sleek design of places like European wax center, this is not the place to go. And for the record, I have No experience with them as a hair salon, I have been here one time for a wax. If you decide to go, just be prepared for crowds and questionable hygiene *edit* have returned several times and I think it is the prerogative of the technician to wear gloves or not, I have seen both instances now. Also go earlier in the morning to avoid the crowds, but if you don't call ahead, wax techs aren't in until 8am read more

I've been going to Charm for about 5 years now. I get a Brazilian & eyebrow threading done by Silvia. She is the best! The cost for a Brazilian is cheap, and she's quick, neat, & very kind. Another good thing is that I hardly ever have to wait - even without an appointment! Last time I was there, which was in August, they were renovating & expanding the shop (the salon is very outdated). I hope they make the waxing room nicer. Things you should know... I see Sylvia, and she always does such a fantastic job and always makes me feel comfortable. A hair salon can be a scary place. especially when you have questions about the product that fried your hair. When I asked to see it, they refused saying it was for stylist only. They offered to write it down and when I looked it up it did not exist. I looked for 3 hours on the internet and could not find the product. Who cut my hair for long time is so great, I came to do hair color and highlights (which I'lnwas thinking about to do it for long time and finally I decided tondo it) the owner of this place ANGELO who prepared the wrong color my stylist put on my hair and we found out that the color was wrong. I've been going to Charm now for about 3 years and each time that I've had a service done, I've left a very happy customer. I get my eyebrows and upper lip threading done by Sudabeh. The cost for both is something around $12...which in this area, can't be beat. She is very friendly and takes her time to ensure that you leave her chair looking fabulous. I can't say that I've left her chair unhappy. Sudabeh not only does my threading, but she is my go-to person for waxing services. She is REALLY quick and has great techniques to help you relax and also gives you great pointers to make the waxing process A LOT less painful. You girls know what I mean ;) I've had my hair done there twice. The first time I got just a cut and the second time, I had decided to get highlights done. I can't remember the woman who styled my hair the first time, but Anna did my highlights exactly how I had imagined them, and I can't begin to tell you how many compliments I received. Overall, I LOVE this place! I will be relocating out of state next month and I am hoping that I will be able to find a salon that can deliver the same quality service (at a reasonable price) as Charm has. *Please keep in mind that although it is not necessary to make an appointment for threading services, I HIGHLY recommend doing so since this place has really become popular in the past few months and an average wait without one is a 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. Huge warning for every other African American female in Hackensack: this place is not equipped to handle our hair type. The hair stylists act like helping someone of color with their hair is a huge hassle and they're sure to make you feel bad about it and insist you get rollers done and get a keratin treatment done just to make it easier for themselves. They act like our hair takes 5 hours. It's ridiculous. My latest visit I scheduled an appointment for the afternoon, which the receptionist eagerly accepted. When I get there the owner is at the front desk and calls over to the receptionist asking why she didn't book me in the morning then- as if he forgot I was directly in front of him- goes and says to me "can't you come back in the morning?" He says it with this look of agony or annoyance, like I'm a major inconvenience even though I always tip well and don't gripe even though he charges people with my hair type more (he thinks I don't know). I rolled my eyes when I walked away and he insisted upon making me another appointment, which is set for Saturday. I won't be back. I'll take my money elsewhere where the stylists don't make me feel like a lower class client. Bottom line: lazy and unprofessional. read more

Best place around for waxing. Every time i get my brows done I'm never disappointed. I also see a lot of people coming in for the threading. In terms if prices, they are super cheap. $7 for brow wax and $8 for threading. I also get my upper lip done for $5. They also do great Brazilian's for $25. Sudebe and Rehazza are amazing threaders! I will never have anyone else touch my face! They don't just thread they consult on shaping. Sudebe made my eyebrows look like a super model when I started going to her several months before my wedding. He helped me grow and shape them into PERFECTION! The only two things this salon has going for them are Afia who is a genius at threading eyebrows And Elaine who gives great hair cuts... The staff is friendly, yes, but their skills and professionalism are definitely lacking. Uneven single process hair coloring: I've walked out with two tone hair because the colorist would not heed advice I gave him on how to apply color to my hair. My hair doesnt take color easily so I asked he do it a certain way and he didnt listen. A week later my friend who is not in the beauty industry followed my instructions with box dye and evened it out. Unsanitary mani and pedi practices: the girl working on my feet confessed she'd been reusing an old piece of sandpaper from home depot for years on customers feet, she didnt clean under my nails and didnt get all the old nail polish off my toes. Unprofessional employees: bickering and bad mouthing in front of clients as well as stopping to text and talk on their cell phones while working on you, also, even if you make an appointment, you will have to wait. This place isnt on time even if you're their first appointment of the day. Old fashioned updos and unkept promises: A good salon knows their limits and will tell you if they can't handle a request you have, this salon yesses you to death, doesn't deliver and then expects you to pay full price. I was maid of honor in a wedding and after an initial consultation I scheduled an appointment with Elaine. Sadly, Elaine's mother passed away so she wasn't available for the appointment. I tried to have a second consultation but after showing Frank a photo of a simple updo he just yessed me to death and said they'd take care of it that day. Not only did my appointment start half an hour late but they immediately started teasing my hair and putting it into a very hard and old fashioned updo. A very far cry from the soft romantic volumous curls I'd shown them. Did I mention that they wanted to use rubber bands from office depot to hold my hair up? I had to refuse to let them put that in my hair for them to find actual hair ties to use. After I complained that I wanted a softer look than the teased mess they had made, they brushed everything out and wet my hair and started to scrunch it. Then I explained that they should curl my entire head of hair and pin the curls back. It was starting to look up until they brushed the curls out and hair sprayed another helmet on my head. When I complained again, another stylist came over, took my hair apart and teased my hair again and pulled it back taking the wisps of hair that were supposed to stay out back into a semi pinned back pony tail. It seemed like the more they wanted to fix it, the worse it got. At this point my hair looked like a mess and I was late to get my makeup done for the wedding. I told them to stop working on my hair bc I had to go and went up to pay. When i offered to pay 2/3 of the original price the receptionist became very rude and threated to wash out my hair and send me to the wedding with wet hair if I didn't pay full price. I left and could feel bobby pins falling out of my hair as i drove to the brides house to get ready. Luckily her hair stylist was still there and was able to fix the disaster Charm left in my hair. I am sad to leave Elaine but moving forward I will go else where for all my hair services. If i ever go back to Charm it will be only because Afia is THAT good at eyebrows but if I'm able to find a new eye brow threader with her level of skill, I'll move on from Charm compeltely. I have been a client at this salon for over ten years and little by little dropped service by service. I only kept going back because of Afia and Elaine. Like I said, Afia and Elaine are the only two things this salon has going for them. The way management and the receptionisy handled the wedding updo was the last straw and the reason I am leaving a review. I am really disappointed by Charm. read more
