We were incredibly excited to try Char Blu. Given its beautiful location on the river in Champlin and the stream of positive reviews, we were anticipating a high-end, upscale dining experience. Instead, our visit to the patio felt less like fine dining and more like a bizarre episode of the Twilight Zone. To start, the service outside was painfully slow. We spent a massive amount of time just waiting for basic attention. But the real issue was the sheer chaos at our table. Between our server and the busser, drinks were spilled on our party not just once, but twice. To top it all off, a knife was dropped right at the table--thankfully, it narrowly missed hitting anyone's feet. The patio was an incredibly frustrating experience and completely lacked basic coordination. That being said, the inside of the restaurant looked nice, so we might be willing to give them one more chance strictly for drinks or a bite at the indoor bar. However, as far as outdoor dining goes, the execution was an absolute mess. read more

The restaurant was bustling, yet it was not overly loud. The plate ware was gorgeous, I was speculating that it was perhaps handmade pottery? The food and drink were all extremely excellent. It is an expensive place, but both the quality and quantity of the food were quite high. We had the pork belly appetizer, the bone in T-bone steak, risotto and the filet mignon steak. Service was plentiful and excellent, which was even more amazing given they hadn't been open very long yet. Suggestion: maybe contact the restaurant directly for a reservation, I had used open table and we were seated closest to the kitchen. read more

We went to Char Blu last night for my Husbands birthday. We were very careful while choosing our food as I have an allergy to ALL nuts. We decided to share two entrees that did not contain nuts in their descriptions. When our lobster tails came out, there were nuts sprinkled all over them and into the potatoes. Our waiter asked if he could take it back and have an entire new one made, but I just asked if we could just get one single one without nuts, and my husband could eat the one provided and he said no problem. Come time to pay the bill, we were charged for the one lobster tail they brought out with no nuts ( when the entree comes with two) but we were charged MORE than the original price for the one plus the price for the first entree! Incredibly disappointing especially given the price of each entree. Allergies are not something to take lightly and to make people pay extra for when it's the restaurants fault for not disclosing the full menu. read more

Wanted to try out this new addition to the NW Metro food scene. Busy Saturday night. With a reservation, seated within minutes. Nice, welcoming atmosphere. Service was spot on. Friendly and attentive without being pushy. Cocktails were exceptional. Shrimp appetizer was very nicely done. Food brought in a very timely manner. This place is fun and beautiful, but I feel they need some work. The menu looks great, but poorly executed. Its expensive, which we expected, but the service was lacking (server never came around to check on us), the steaks were not cooked correctly and the lobster tails were mealy. I was really excited to go there for my birthday dinner but was really disappointed in the experience and the service. There were 8 of us so nothing huge the service was really not what I expected from a place at this price point. The water guy was more attentive then our server. We always were asking for refills never was just brought out, I was asking questions about the menu nothing hard and was given very little information on the menu. The food was good except my son had a burger that was like a hockey puck and the server was like yes that is how they are, what? Weird our steaks were good perfectly but we were never checked on to make sure of that. The sides come with the meal you do not get a choice unless you want to pay the full price of the side you want. Never once were we asked how everything was tasting or if all was good. I asked if they do anything for birthdays and he was just like no we don't? Not like oh happy birthday we don't do a dessert but let me show you.... I don't know it was just not a great experience from a place that sales themselves as a higher level space. WOW! Great new place to eat and drink! Was here for a nieces birthday dinner, started out with green beans and tiger shrimp appetizer, shrimp was light and crunchy!both were delicious, the green eans could have been cooked a slight bit longer but flavors were all there. The items the rest of my party had were the Halibut burger which I was told was just ok, more of a mush ball of fish formed into a circle and put on a burger, was also told the salmon and risotto were fabulous! The Shrimp scampi pasta was flavorful but too spicy for my fiancé, lucky for me I got to eat it for lunch the next day. The steaks were thrive worthy and the sauces with the steaks. Look forward to coming back and trying new dishes, must also say I LOVED the walnut square decorative wall!! The service was very good also. Tiny bit on the expensive side but everything was a treat, maybe a great birthday or anniversary place. read more

Visited to celebrate our anniversary. From the moment we walked in, noticed the music was very loud. Why? Don't go to "upscale" restaurant to listen to music. The hostess initially tried to seat us next to kitchen door. Right. Not for what we thought we would spend. Finally sat us in a booth for six. Music grew louder in the restaurant proper. We received the recommendation to try the pork chop by several of the staff and were blown away and even though my partner and I shared it, we still had a lot of it left to take home. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME & MONEY!! Have tried this place twice now and both times have been an awful dining experience. They can't get their crap together here in any way. Due to an out door band nearby there was zero parking for restaurant guests so had to park blocks away at a plaza and walk. Ridiculous service- waitress went through a long script on all of her "favorites" on the menu for both drinks and food and basically called the entire menu her "favorite". Waited 15 minutes just to get our beverages and over an hour and a half for food- The restaurant wasn't even half capacity!!! The wait time in between requesting cocktails, water & food was ridiculous. Tried to order the "Japanese Steakhouse salad" $16 (which was one of the waitresses "favorites" again,) then was asked if I want to add steak to it? Which was an additional $16 that she neglected to mention? I changed my order when I realized that. The first time we tried this place I ordered the Grass Fed Ribeye $$$ Which was the worst steak I ever had, it tasted like they plopped it in a pot of boiling water and plated it for me- it was awful. My husband and I had dinner on the patio on Saturday night. Atmosphere was nice but not great service experience. This is actually our third bad experience so won't be back. My husband ordered an extra dirty martini. He got an extra dry martini. Waiter shared that he would bring some olive juice then came back and shared that he rang it extra dry by mistake. How should this be fixed? Replace the drink that we are paying for. Nope! We asked our server what another table had ordered. Our server shared that it was the double bone pork chop. We ordered that to share. Our waiter told us that it was great and we would not be disappointed. We had about a three minute conversation about the great taste of the pork chop and thickness. Finally, we got our order and it was short ribs. We waited for the waiter to return. The waiter finally came to the table after a bit. He then said that he misunderstood and wrote down short ribs. My husband said to him that was weird since that is not what we discussed and he told us about the pork chops and came back with a spoon and knife and said this is to be fancy for that double boned pork chop. We continued to wait and then got the pork chop. The waiter stopped by and said he was glad it didn't take long. Maybe 20 to 25 minutes. Manager stopped by to say that he was glad we finally got what we ordered and walked away. Not a great experience. Had to wait. People pay for food and experience. Nothing was comped . No one took the opportunity to really care. Very disappointing and we paid full price. Manager and server could probably use some training. Great customer service goes a long way. Date night was us being concerned about the problems and looking for the waiter to correct vs relaxing. read more

Listed anniversary and booth request; got bar table and "happy birthday " on the bill. No special dessert for our friend's anniversary. Food and drink service was slow, but server Lamar very attentive. Food no where near expectations and very disappointing. Crab cake appetizer at $25 was well seasoned but was canned crab and overdone, with burnt edges & bottom. I requested French dip sandwich and they were out (on a Thursday). Shrimp in pasta tough and rubbery. Salmon was excellent, as well as the Caesar salad and French onion soup. Espresso ice cream dessert ($15) unremarkable. My husband made reservations for Saturday at 4:00 to celebrate my birthday. When we arrived we were told they'd lost our reservation and offered us nothing instead. They were full. It was a real disappointment and we're considering whether to cancel the reservations we have in two weeks for a group we've made. Who knows if those will be lost as well. read more

Nothing is marked as gluten-free or any other way. But we've had luck at other steakhouses (and this is really close to us, so we were really hoping!). We emailed ahead of time, and got a list from the general manager of items that were gluten-friendly. We decided to risk it. This was a mistake. When we got there, our server warned us there was no dedicated fryer or grill space and a super-high risk of contamination (she also works at another, unrelated, restaurant that actually cares about allergens and dietary restrictiions). Even though she checked with the chef twice about the scallops and risotto and aligot potatoes, I still got sick (we're wondering if the "crispy ham" and "fried basil" were in the shared fryer???). Not violently, but even a bit is too much, and I won't eat here again and warn everyone else Celiac away from it. So disappointed! My non-GF husband got a steak and said it was okay, but we thought things could have used more salt. The scallops were seared well. So, maybe okay for others, but I can't go back. Me and friends went at 8:30 on a Friday night, we made a reservation and got seated right away. Me and my friends are teens and got treated with such respect by our server Stephanie. She was very thoughtful with our service and we didn't feel forgotten about which can happen when people our age go to nicer restaurants. I got the shrimp scampi to start and it was good, just wasn't my style and she took the time to go over options that I could have and we found something else that worked perfectly. We got a booth when we were seated and I felt that it was a perfectly lit area. It wasn't too bright that it was overwhelming but not to dark where it was hard to see. Overall I thought the restaurant itself and the staff was great and met expectations perfectly, we will definitely be back in the future for dinner and to try other menus as well! read more

Six of us, ages 10-70's, met here last night for 2 birthday celebrations! What a great choice! We all thoroughly enjoyed our time and meals. Diane F was our server. She was friendly, gracious and attentive. She knows the menu and made great recommendations. We started with the crab cakes, YUMMO cakes and sauce, and the bone marrow fries. It was plenty for all of us and delicious! I really enjoyed the Mississippi River cocktail. So tasty and made more so with the addition of the pine sprig. It adds so much fragrance to the drink. Did I mention that it even had glitter in it! Deeelicious!!! I had the Ribeye Beef Dip and it's huge! My side was the wedge salad and it is large enough to be a whole meal. The others had steaks and a burger with leftovers to take home. The Clean Plate award goes to the scallops and the salmon dinners! We shared the Pistachio Lava cake which disappeared quickly. I would have licked the plate if I was at home! Thank you again to Diane and all the others who brought our food to the table. Everyone was kind and efficient. There was NEVER an empty water glass, either! Let me make one suggestion, please. A real chocolate dessert would be a welcome addition. We had a reservation for 3:45 on a Sunday. It was a cold January afternoon, and the first booth by the front door was where we were seated, and that wasn't going to work. I realize its probably a rotating server section seating chart, but we needed to go back somewhere away from a draft coming in. Service was in between lunch and dinner, we were given a lunch menu only, and asked for a dinner menu also since we could wait 15 minutes if we needed to. There were issues with each menu item we ordered. The batter on the tiger shrimp app was way over done and hard as a rock. 2 of us ordered the 1/2 prime French dip with French onion soup that came out without au jus, had to ask for that. the burger had way too much sauce on it, and for dessert I ordered the affogoto it didn't come with 2 pirouettes like described. when asked about them the server brought one out on a plate and said " we're not going to serve it with them and they just haven't changed the menu" okay. the menu is very very descriptive with certain ingredients listed which I love, so it should include them when presented and served. read more
