This place is a One-of-a-Kind. If you're a Ravens fan, or like Guy Fieri of the Food Network (Diners, Drive Ins and Dives guy), you have to stop in here for some BBQ! The place has Ravens memorabilia plastered from floor to ceiling, most of it signed, so clearly the Ravens players are stopping in here from time to time! Although, something about it almost reminds me of the infamous Philly cheese steak spots in Philadelphia. Though the service is friendly, don't get to the front of the line and not know what you want to order. Patience isn't their virtue! Do not be discouraged that it's in a strip club parking lot, it's actually a very family friendly establishment! I've stopped in here a few times with my parents, originally because my mom had seen it on DDD. Their pit beef is amazing! It's flavorful, tender, crispy on the edges, just as it should be! Their Pork BBG and Grilled Chicken Breast are great, too! The sandwich bread is everything it should be - basically a roll that absorbs some sauce and still holds up. First time in, though I've been hearing about this place for years now and have even seen it on TV once. This place sits at what seemed to be a decently busy intersection and shares a parking lot with a gentleman's club that's just steps away. So you could be in for a show and a meal if you're looking for an outing. The shop itself is pretty small and has limited seating, a pretty low frills establishment which is fine with me. I'd rather they be concentrating efforts on the food than making the place pretty. There were several people in line when we showed up but many were exploring the menu so we bypassed them after a quick glance at sides. We knew we were there for the pit beef, it was all that mattered. A young lady greeted us right away when we made it to the order window and promptly took our order. 2 pit beef sammiches, side of mac & cheese, side of green beans, and an order of the chicken wings for exploratory purposes. Once we payed for our gluttony we stepped over to the pick up side where you have full view of the kitchen and cooks. Directly across from the window are all the BBQ sauces, horseradish and other fixins one would need for a good time. The wait wasn't more than 10 mins and we were ready to rock. I was so excited to eat that I took only one of quite possibly the worst pics of food I've ever posted. But hey, the thought was there. I enjoyed every part of that meal and so did my friend. We're definitely planning a return trip for the not so distant future. I suggest gorging there if you haven't already. Prices were fair and meal was really good! Some things to note.. Parking was not the greatest but luckily most people were in and out. Likely due to the limited seating. They did have an outdoor seating area but it was too cold out the afternoon we went. The place is DRAFTY with doors on both ends of a pretty small building. So it was pretty chilly in there, I could see it being pretty hot in the summer also. Not a good place for large groups if planning to stay and dine. Other than that, you simply can't go wrong! I thought I had it all when it came to BBQ'd beef, but this was a treat. The main negatives are the location and the sketchy parking lot, but it's all uphill from there. You have to try the pit beef, which has a unique smoky taste that sets it apart from thin-sliced roast beef. You should also consider loading it up with 1-2 sauces/spices (just ask the people that work there what's most popular). Onion was also suggested as a topping, which worked pretty well. Seriously PEOPLE what do you expect and from a place right off of Pulaski???...I so hate reading reviews that say, "Well, I've had better beef...they could have used filet mignon but i only want to pay for the dollar menu." I just dont get it. CHAPS gets four stars from me because its just darn right simple and darn right delicious and affordable. This is a place that puts out a lot of beef and meat sandwiches making all but the unrealistic smile. You got Pit Beef, Corned Beef, Turkey, Ham, Sausages, Chicken Wings all at your disposal and most of the time in a some sort of tasty combination. The sandwiches are packed full. The last thought on your mind is, "they coulda put more meat in here...," because they can't!! True, the fries are not the strong point but you should be focusing on the MEAT!! I really like the chicken wings and the Chaps Sandwich...although, all of the sandwiches I've tried were very good. The dining area is not the cleanest and the condiment section is a little scary too. Service is decent; i've hardly had to wait long for any order. Located in a strip club parking lot this place is nothing short of delicious. Tender soft roast beef on a soft bun. Drench your sandwich in their perfectly creamy and perfectly horseradishy "Tiger Sauce" and put some of their BBQ sauce on the side for dipping. There may be a long line out the door (the place is small) when you arrive but it moves quick and they cram a decent amount of tables in the small space so nabbing a table shouldn't be terribly difficult but during the busiest times it may be super tight and you may consider taking your food to go. Guy Fieri was here for DDD and you can order the loaded sandwich with sausage and other meats that he had when he was here but as far as I am concerned the traditional pit beef is where it's at. read more

This is a fantastic place to go if you're feeling famished. Tons of delicious meat stuffed in bread, with all the sauces you could want. It's definitely a very salty and heavy meal, so be prepared for that. I really enjoyed the Rachel--the sweet coleslaw is a nice balance to the salty corned beef. So. Much. MEAT. You will not go hungry leaving this place. Even after the 'traditional' lunch time hours, the line almost was out the door when we got there. Granted, it's not that big of a place. Order at the window, wait for food at another window, pick up a tray, get your sauces, and chow down. I got the Chaps Special sub - filled with heaping portions of corn beef, beef and ham, and lined with American cheese. I doused it in Tiger Sauce (horseradish and mayo) and towards the mid-point of the sandwich added some BBQ sauce to the mix. Had to take a good bit of meat off the sandwich in order to get it to even fit in my mouth. But it was very, very good. A little over-salty, though, and next time I will probably just try the corn beef on it's own. Depending on how you like your meat cooked, know that they seemed to be slightly overcooked - my meat was ordered medium-well and it was more well than medium. Rare seems to be a good way to go, or medium-rare as my friend ordered. My friends and I split a large fry and a large mac n' cheese (which isn't on the menu, but they have it - order it, it is delicious!) and we were unbelievably stuffed. We waddled to the car. Ok, not literally. The only qualm - they need to add birch beer to the menu. That would give this place five starts. No joke. read more

Right next to a strip club if you know what I mean The Yuck: The cleanliness of the restaurant could be better and same goes with the restroom. When I came to Baltimore, I only had a couple of places to hit up and this place was one of them. The sheer amount of meat that I see on the sandwiches was a immediate decision that I had to come here. Before I came, I thought the prices of these sandwiches were going to be like at least $10+ because just look at them. There's no way that someone will resist not going to this place and try out their pit beef unless you're vegan/vegetarian but that doesn't count. I ordered the BBB(Baltimore Bad Boy's), the Raven, and the staple Pit Beef Sandwich. The BBB is practically an all in one sandwich. It was layered with macaroni and cheese, shredded cabbage, tomatoes, bacon, extra cheese on top of meat on meat on meat. It was so juicy and soft and it felt like I was in food heaven one bite after another. The Raven on the other hand was just a meaty sandwich. It was the definition of a meat sandwich because there were so many layers of meet in that sandwich that it was bursting. There was no sauce on this sandwich which was fine because the corned beef/pit beef/turkey in it had so much flavor already. The Pit Beef on the other hand surprisingly lacked seasoning and was very plain in terms of salt. When I took a bite out of it I was pretty unimpressed but I was kind of glad it was like that because once you add the Tiger Sauce/BBQ sauce it just completely changed into a different sandwich. These sauces just complimented this sandwich so well so I definitely recommend to try it out. The Tiger Sauce is a horseradish mayo/aioli of some sort and the BBQ sauce they had there had a very sharp vinegar taste. I mixed these two sauces together in my sandwich and it just made my sandwich pop. The complimentary pickles were also a must get with the sandwiches because they were so crunchy and there's something about eating bbq and pickles that feels so right. I must emphasize that for the price of less than $10 for each sandwich this place is amazing. This place also offers traditional BBQ food like ribs and wings etc etc. I would definitely come back here again if I ever visit Baltimore. If you don't have a car or don't want to spend $10+ to uber/lyft there you can try the bus which takes you directly to the restaurant. I've eaten here more than a few times. I usually get the pit beef medium rare or the guys triple d sandwich. The food is usually pretty good and the service as well. Yesterday I went for lunch and got the triple d sub. It's was lunch time so fairly busy but not packed like it can be sometimes. I didn't see the guy who usually wraps and calls the orders in the window. It was a different employee doing this and I was watching waiting for my food to come up. I saw the cook pull my meat off the grill and bring it over to where they make the sandwiches. I saw the lady at the window had black latex gloves on completing the sandwiches and wrapping them. The gloves made me feel good but then the phone rang and the lady answered the phone and answered a few questions and hung up the phone and put it down. She pushed up her glasses with the gloves hand and then went right to closing up my sandwich and wrapping it in foil. I did not like to see that this person handling all of the food was not following proper food handling safety practices. I wondered what germs were all over that cordless phone and how many of them got on my food from what she did. This is the kind of stuff that can make people get sick. If I wasn't in a hurry and hadn't paid already I would have walked out when I saw this unsanitary food handling. I will go to the other pit beef place I like where one person handles the meat, one makes the sandwiches and another person runs the register and answers the phone. Chaps would be smart to refresh some of the food safety training for staff to ensure that they are doing things in a sanitary manner. I will think twice about eating here again. read more

But frankly, the beef was just rather tasteless -- really no "there" there. When it was all put together as a sandwich, it was pretty good, but not so much that I'd go out of my way to B'more to eat here again. Although i won't lie, chaps does not accommodate groups larger than 4 that well - there's only one larger table inside. for the actual food review, the beef was under seasoned and a bit cold. The meat was dry too. though the different sauces and free condiments like hot peppers, onions, and pickles add a much needed acidic kick to your bite, the beef sandwich overall was not as good as what other reviewers may think. I have only had the Pit Beef Sandwich, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. You don't come here for fancy food, but if you like good meat cooked over charcoal, then this is a wonderful place. A friend came with me, and he wanted his beef, "Very Rare". The folks behind the counter we're more than happy to oblige his request, and he thoroughly enjoyed his sandwich as well. Any restaurant that is willing to accommodate their customers like that in my book is a really good place to eat. I saw Chaps on DDD, so I thought I would go and find it. Overall the food was quite good. I had a Pit Beef sandwich and fries. The Pit Beef was excellent. The meat was well seasoned, plentiful and delicious. The fries were hand cut and were too greasy for my taste. I tried a number of their sauces including Tiger sauce and their BBQ. Overall I was impressed. The bad. The place is WAY out of Downtown in a less than desirable neighborhood. I am like 99% sure that it was found by Guy and his crew as they drunkenly stumbled out of the strip club that shares a parking lot with the small restaurant. There were a number of homeless in the parking lot soliciting and SWEAR TO GOD, there was a car up on blocks with bullet holes in the windshield as I merged back onto the freeway less than a block from there. 3 stars. This just might be the best pit beef I've ever had. I absolutely love that you can get it medium rare. Top it off with the tiger sauce and it's one hell of a sandwich.
