All I have to say is, Chaps is worth the hype. I've lived on the west side all my life, so I rarely get out to Pulaski. Today, however, I had to pick up some furniture on that side of town and I was a bit early and a lot hungry. I checked yelp and saw Chaps was nearby, so I promptly got my tail there with one thing in mind: pit beef. Side note: My grandfather owned a catering hall in Lansdowne for many years. Some weekends he had up to 5 bull roasts, and my parents often helped run them, so I spent the better part of my childhood in a catering kitchen eating plates of pit beef and fried oysters. Since my grandfather closed down about a decade ago, I have dreamed of pit beef as good as his. Mostly I'm disappointed. Today I was not disappointed. Chaps serves up perfectly juicy, medium-rare, lightly seasoned, thin sliced beef on a soft, fresh roll. They have a free topping bar with two kinds of BBQ sauce, ketchup, mayo, tiger sauce, horseradish, hots, pickles, and onions; HOWEVER if you grew up in Baltimore you know that tiger sauce, horseradish, and onions are the only way to go. Chaps Pit Beef was the worst of three that I tried in a single (otherwise delicious) Saturday in Baltimore. Two buddies and I had come from Pioneer (our gold-medal winner) to Chaps, and were expecting comparably tender, delicious beef. Nope. Maybe it was Chaps on an off day, but the beef was chewy and utterly flat. Even the horseradish was stale - I slathered it on my sandwich in a futile search for flavor. After a single bite we exchanged looks of shocked disappointment. The menu is too long - they're trying to do too much - and the grill doesn't seem to involve charcoal or wood as a good slow-cooked meat should. If you're reading this *after* you've ordered your sandwich and you can't escape to a good spot, make sure to put plenty of salt & pepper on your sandwich, plus whatever other condiments you like. read more

First stop on the TV Foodie Road Trip in 2015 has become an absolute must Year after year. This was not only featured on DDD twice but also on Best Thing I Ever Ate on Foodnetwork. It ain't pretty but you can smell it 2 blocks awhile and it draws you in. Walk up to counter order your pit beef, I know it's hard to choose but first timers should go for straight thin sliced Pit Beef. It's on a perfect rolled and you top it with whatever you want. Raw onion and horseradish is my choice. Pickle, mayo, mustard, bbq sauce are all there to add. I've eaten there at one of the few tables and gotten it to go and it travels well. I've been here twice before first time I ordered the Guy's Triple D (Beef, Corned Beef, Sausage) ($7.55) and the second time I ordered the Beef/Sausage ($6.80). I was a little disappointed both times. The beef was rather tasteless and dry. Without the excessive sauces you can add to it on the side there really is no moisture in the meat. The serving size is rather large so I guess you get a lot of food for your money (if that is what you are looking for). The place is definitely a hole in the wall. Meat overload is all I have to say about this place. I got the chapped sub (chipped beef and ham and cheese). There was so much meat in this sandwich I could not finish and I can eat a lot. It was about 9 bucks but I probably should have split this with someone. The meat is tender and juicy. Get the tiger sauce! My friend got the Italian sausage, it's so flavorful!!! I'm not sure how I've lived in Baltimore for almost 6 months without every hearing about pit beef. Luckily that got fixed last month when I came to Chaps for the first time. The line was long and we had to wait for seats, but it was so worth it. I got a pit beef sandwich was sooo awesome: the meat was thinly sliced, tender. I do wish the slices were smaller as I would take a bit and then have to use my hands to hold the meat to pull off a bite. Definitely recommend the horseradish and the south carolina bbq sauce. Omg, yes..yes...yes..yes! I've been wanting to try this place for years and finally did. My mom was very jealous when I told her I was going. Most triple d joints I visit hike up their prices and service goes down after a big review but not this place. Lots of beef, coleslaw, cheese, and thousand island dressing on toasted bread. I added lots of Carolina BBQ to the mix because it's freakin' Carolina BBQ sauce, one of my faves! Not sure why this place doesn't have 5 stars! First off...if you are a foodie, this place is a must. It's a simple concept, done extremely well. Nothing fancy: not fancy service or location or even decor. But the food is BOMB! You honestly can't go wrong with any of the food. There are plenty of options with lots of combos. Additionally, the sides are fantastic. Can't beat the food for the awesome price - fairly cheap for the amazing mouth watering quality. I've been coming here for years, and have driven up to 45 mins for this food. Yes, it's that good. The only downsides some people may point out - it's not in the nicest part of Baltimore and is definitely a dive. It's off the beaten path. Plan was to go to our usual spot, Philip's. But, fam wanted bbq. Fam are also fans of Guy Fiore(sp), the food channel dude. Apparently, Guy showcased this joint, so we went. Having lived in the south, I am unimpressed with bbq above the NC border. But, this place has given me doubt. We tried the all beef sandwich, all chicken sandwich and the big john. The single meat sandwiches were spot on. The meats are most, juicy and bursting with flavor. My favorite was the chicken. The big john is made of sausage, beef, turkey, and ham. It's big...some might say too big. I am not a fan of mixing different meats so I wont be getting this next time..yes, there will be a next time! If your going to get the fries, dont add cheese, it can make them soggy and hard to season as the cheese coagulates. I have eaten here twice before but no rating. Today it's for real. Small place with lots of local fare and history. The last time I was here was about two years ago but it was at the end of a bender with alcohol. So this would not have been a fair fight. Today I was very hungry so I tried two items, the pulled pork sandwich, and the roast beef ( BKA Beef Brisket) sandwich. My test with all BBQ places is that if your bbq is good it should not require any of that made up bbq canned bbq sauce. If you have to add sauce to the meat or sandwich this is not good at all. Your meat should stand on its own. First up with the roast beef sandwich. The roast beef good, hot, and juicy. Had a good smoky flavor but I think should have been smokier but some people don't like it hot. I feel that once you add a little bbq sauce on it make it pop more. The rich deep tomato bbq on hand made it work more for me then plane without the sauce. Very balanced flavor but like I said above must add something else to it to make the flavors pop The pulled pork sandwich was my favorite. Smoking. Has more meat in the sandwich and more traditional backyard smokiness. I will return again for this sandwich again. You could eat this without the sauce. Excellent. Yea yea, it's not the best location in the world - next door to a "gentleman's club" ... but you're not likely to get jumped or anything. It's just the extra bit of "charm" that you'll receive while in Baltimore (along w/being called "hun"). Plenty of parking all around the place. I was lucky enough to get there right before the lunch rush where the line was well outside the door. It's always a good sign when ppl line up for something, right? I ordered the bit beef sandwich on a kaiser roll - added my own onions and tiger sauce. Good stuff and only about $6.25. I wasn't hungry enough to order one of those gigantic sandwiches. There's indoor and outdoor seating. Although grabbing seats is hard sometimes. Also there's a couple clean bathrooms by the outside seating. The place has been featured on so many tv shows including No Reservations, Man vs Food, and Diners Drive-ins & Dives. They were all right - it's good food at very affordable prices. I came here because I saw it was featured on food network and thought it be a good idea to check out. Let's start out with location, ita right of a Hwy and next to a gentleman's clubs. It's weird, but if you can get over that the place is a solid pit. The food was great. They have the grills and meat being cooking so you don't have to wait long to get whatever you ordered. The serving sizes are huge and price is super low for the amount you get. I got a few things to test what is good. And everything was great. I first saw Chap's on the Food Network, then saw someone on my friends list check in here. So the first chance I got (while working), I stopped in. The line that I saw from the east side of the building looked like it was for the afternoon show at the gentleman's club that was about 50 feet away..... Nope!! Not only was a wrong, I had to double back to get in the back of the line. Once inside, I looked at the menu while peeping what was on everyone's tray at the tables. The burger that was on a woman's tray looked like it had my name on it... Then I came to my senses.. I can get a burger anywhere. But I can't get a freshly cooked beef sandwich on every block at home. (ok.. not on any block where I live). I got a two meat combo of medium cooked beef and sausage, and an order of gravy fries. I got several cups of different sauces to go with the beef. The beef lived up to Guy Fieri's normal over animated excitement (Do you see that smoke ring??)... Moist and served medium like I asked for. The gravy fries were a let down. But that's what I get for going off script... So my wife and I saw this on Triple D, and since we were in Baltimore for a conference, we had to try it. SO glad we did. I had the Rachel (corned beef, swiss, coleslaw, and thousand island dressing on rye) and it was so freaking good. The pit style of the corned beef was definitely on of the best ways I've ever had corned beef. It was so tender and flavorful it was great. Every part of the sandwich was great. My wife had the original Pit Beef sandwich. While excellent, we both felt it would be even better with a type of sauce. An Au jus dipping sauce would be a perfect compliment, and we even thought cheese sauce or plain old mustard could amp it up. Again, very flavorful smokey flavor, but not too smokey. I'm not a fan of smokey beef, and this was just perfect. We also had the mac and cheese and highly recommend that as a side. The large is in the picture. Get that, as everyone there told us the small is basically a Dixie cup. We didn't try the fries, but a ton of people had them and were finishing them. The place is tiny. Very few tables, more outside in warmer months we were told. The place was packed, but didn't take more than about 15 minutes to get in, order, and get our food. We easily got a table, as most everyone in there was on a lunch hour and left quickly after eating. Plus, I think it's an unwritten rule there that once you're done, you get out and make room for the next person to enjoy. It's not a sit-down service place, so you won't be lingering anyway. Yes, the restaurant is in the parking lot of a strip club and across the street from an adult bookstore, but it's totally safe. We Ubered there and had to wait in a line outside (a couple of people in line said it's typically not wrapped outside), and felt totally fine...just had to avoid two cars that almost backed into us since they weren't looking. We then waited for our driver outside afterward and again had no hesitation. Other than people not watching where they're driving in the parking lot, don't let the reviews of the neighborhood deter you. It's a bit "rougher" than Fell's Point or the Inner Harbor for sure, but nothing that anyone who has ever been to a city hasn't seen before. No fancy hotels or office buildings, mostly industrial and commercial properties, as well as older houses and apartments. Plus, we saw a ton of police in and around the area getting there and while there (literally 7 cars and 3 roaming packs of cops on foot). I've actually never seen a city with as big of a police presence everywhere you look than Baltimore. This includes this area and the other two I mentioned. Some members of the fire department were actually there with us eating at the time. Go at lunch or dinner when there are a bunch of people to feel more comfortable if you'd like, but DEFINITELY go here. read more
