We were in Baltimore visiting family this weekend and my brother-in-law suggested this place for lunch. If you want a meat sandwich this is the place. Really good pit beef and they give you a lot of it. At least enough for 2 sandwiches and they will give you extra bread if you ask. It's better than most pit beef places if you want to stay and eat, they have a little inside seating area with tables. It looks like a shack on the outside but, not that bad on the inside. On a unassuming stretch of Pulaski Highway you can easily miss it if you don't know what you're looking for. Having heard rave reviews of Chaps Pit Beef on the Travel Channel and the Food Network, I had to try it for myself. I arrived around noon. It was busy but my order was taken and I was served promptly. There is ample seating both indoors and outside. My sandwich came piled high on a roll. I added some onion. very crowded place. line was out the door. but lets get to the food after being ranked #35 in the best sandwich shop in america i thought i would try it and it was on food network etc. i paid 8.50 for a beef n turkey combo and they must give you about 4-5 oz worth of meat. it was good for what it was but to get only 5 oz or less of meat on a sandwich was a bit of a disappointment. it wasnt even worth taken a picture of because the sandwich looked small. it seems like the subs maybe a better way to go. read more

Best Pit Beef I have had in Baltimore so far, and I have lived my whole life in this city. After reading numerous reviews about Chaps Pit Beef, I decided to give this place a try. As many previous viewers have mentioned, Chaps Pit Beef is located right next to Gentleman's Gold Club (a match made in heaven if you're a guy). I bought the pit beef sandwich from here. The cashier was friendly (first positive), the cooks were diligent (second positive), and the sandwich was prepared perfectly (third positive). I think the only negative in regards to my adventure is my regret of not getting ANOTHER sandwich for the road. No need to worry, I will definitely be back again. Stop your search my friends, this is it my friends....Pit Beef heaven is at 5801 Pulaski Hwy. The lovely fumes of charcoal can be spotted from afar. It's like the establishment is calling you from afar. The place is homey, just a pit stop on the side of the road with some pic nic tables for customers to sit in. Enclosed so that nobody freezes during the winter months. It's nothing fancy, lets focus on the food kinda place, or rather DA BEEF!! The menu has several choices, from the picky eaters like myself, that prefer roasted 1/2 chicken with no carbs (lets focus on the chicken). Delicious doesnt even start to describe this. Their specialty is da beef, da pork. da ham. Moist moist and just lovely juices filled with mouth watering flavors comes to life with this perfectly basted meats. Come hungry, this place serves some enourmous sandwiches! Dressing and other spices are at your own liking. The horseradish sause is amazing and so is their bbq sauce. The crew is extremely friendly and they will accomodate gluten allergies, by skipping the bread or letting you know if the sauces might have gluten. I dined at Chaps on Saturday and ordered the Chaps Special which had corn beef, ham, beef, and cheese. I topped it off with their famous tiger sauce which is a mix of mayo and horse radish and I was in carnivore's heaven!!! The mix of meats and tiger sauce hit the comfort food spot. In addition, I ordered their open face corned beef platter which came with a huge amount of fries. The entire platter was covered with their gravy. This platter also satisfied my craving for comfort food. Chaps is located in a working class part of Baltimore on Pulaski Highway. I wouldn't say it's ghetto because Baltimore definitely has more ghetto areas. Don't believe the other reviews about the area. We did NOT have to dodge bullets to eat there. Granted, this area is not Canton, Fells Point or Federal Hill, all yuppied areas of the city which are great, but it's definitely not the worse neighborhood in Baltimore. Looked for this place because it was featured on DDD, Best Thing I Ever Ate, No Reservations AND Man vs Food. I can see why all four shows featured it. It is not much to look at. Almost "hole-in-the-wall" feel about it. But the food is very good, especially the pit beef. Certainly try the "Tiger Sauce" and the spicy peppers mix they have. LOTS of condiments to choose from. But I found just a basic sandwich with meat and little add-ons is the best way to try it at first. Expand from there. The folks working there are friendly, helpful and accomodating. Even when it is busy, it moves VERY fast. So do not let a crowd chase you off. The prices are fair, and worth what you get. Well worth the stop and return visits. Love the beef, the ham, the sausage, and the fries. The fries look a little limp, but if you know that they've been fried in peanut oil, you are not TOO surprised. There's something about peanut oil that makes fries look "dirty" and limper than other oils. But OMG, they taste wonderful! If you want your beef medium, order it rare. Seems to work pretty well. The folks that run this place are just great. Friendly and funny! I have the feeling that if a person can't find ANYTHING positive to say about a place, there is something wrong with the first impression. This was my second visit here, and while I'm sure it's still the best pit beef in Baltimore, the quality had certainly dropped in the year prior. Upon arrival a little after 1 PM, I noticed the parking-lot wasn't nearly as full as last time, and the line wasn't out the door. No big deal, it was a Sunday... however this did end up being a harbinger of things to come. The line that was inside moved swiftly, as those ahead had clearly been there before. A local officer of the law cut the line- but I won't complain about that, Baltimore's a tough city. At the ordering station the guy was cordial, quickly typing the order into the POS station. We ordered two beef sandwiches, both medium, with lettuce and tomato (Warning: a 75 cent up-charge), a large fry, and two drinks. Service was quick, having to wait only a few minutes before the food was ready at the counter. The lady in the kitchen/at the delivery counter announced my order, however she stated only one sandwich had lettuce/tomato. Confused, I told her both sandwiches were supposed to have lettuce/tomato, her reply was "Well that isn't what you ordered". No apology, no offer to rectify the situation, even if it meant paying the 75 measly cents. Honestly, I'm going to try to claim after ordering that I ordered something, as a way to get a 75 cent freebie? Shocked, I left and went to dress my sandwiches. The topping bar was well stocked with a selection of onions, pickles, and then their tiger, house, hickory, and Stubbs BBQ sauces. There were seats inside (space is limited), but being a nice day I decided we'd eat outside instead. Tables line the outside of the building, wouldn't recommend the ones near the bathroom, however the rest are ample room away. Thankfully, there's a fence separating this area and busy Rt 40 and its sidewalk, helping to isolate the area. Finally onto the food... The sandwiches were good, however compared to last time the quality just wasn't there. The meat while somewhat juicy, wasn't cooked medium and had a fair amount of fat. It did however have a flavorful charcoal edge, which sets it apart from others, as this is pit beef. The one sandwich which did have the lettuce/tomato had 3 slices of tomato on it (generous), however there was barely any lettuce. I ended up giving the third slice to the other sandwich. While my sandwich had a generous portion of beef on it, the other had about half the amount, another disappointment. On both sandwiches the bread fell apart, creating a mess, although this is a BBQ place- its supposed to be messy. Fries were hot, too hot for the Styrofoam box they were placed in- as it scorched the box, but very good, and a portion large enough for 2 or 3 people. I even found a chunk of potato mixed in with the fries proving they are indeed fresh cut. All in all, this is clearly a Baltimore landmark, thanks in part to its television fame (There is no shortage of plaques/memorabilia on the walls, and influence evident on the menu), but also its loyal following. I do question however if their fame isn't getting in the way, as quality, customer service, and portion size has clearly decreased. Maybe they were having an off day, or somebody in the kitchen was, but I will say this... while I'm sure people will continue to flock there, this customer will think twice next time before driving all the way from New Jersey. read more

This is about the 6th or 7th place I've eaten at that was on Food TV. Until now that was coincidental, Yelp says it's good, I go. It doesn't matter if Food TV follows or not. This time I saw it on DDD and thought it looked good so when I had plans to be riding through Maryland, I stopped at Chaps. Normally this is the type of place I would have skipped, if it isn't in the hood it is definitely hood adjacent. On the way there I'm pretty sure I witnessed one drug deal. Just an FYI in case you decide to visit with the kiddos or get nervous in such places at night. I was thinking of turning around when I caught a whiff of the place from a mile away. I kept going. Warning, Chaps sort of comes out of nowhere if you come in on Mulberry from the west to be ready. As I roll up I see it shares a parking lot with a strip club, and across the street is a porn shop... NICE. I'm again thinking of leaving because I don't want to leave my bike in the parking lot. Fortunately just then three police cars arrive at the strip club, lights on. One cop goes into Chaps the other two go to the strip club. So being well protected I go inside. The line is long and slow. 22 people long at one point, yes I counted (the line was long and slow, what else could I do?) Finally the review of the food... While in line I notice the fries are only cooked once and it looks like they don't cook them hot enough, so they are oily and brown and over $3. Not my thing so I order the cole slaw, beans and a beef sandwich. Once you order your food this place is fast, once I've paid my food is ready. I get my sides of onions, tiger sauce (like horsey sauce from Arby's but actually good) and horse radish. The sides are awesome, the beef was super tender and cooked perfectly strangely though it was a little dry and needed salt, but the sauces worked that out well. The bread was just an egg bun. I wish it had a little more chew to it. As I finished I noticed the guys at the end of the line when I got my food were only 2 people away from ordering. Would I go back? Sure next time I'm in Baltimore, feel like waiting in a long line for 20 minutes and want to see something naked while I also happen to be hungry, I'm there. But odds are, I'll be able to find pit beef elsewhere that is in a better locale. Still I give it 3.5 out of 5 so let's round it up to 4. read more

I've been coming to Chaps for years and have had just about everything on the menu. My favorite is still the pit beef sandwich (medium rare). The beef is sliced thin, always tender and juicy with little to no fat on the meat. The Richwich is also a great sandwich, although you have to eat half the meat with a fork before you can even attempt to eat it like a sandwich. I went to Chap's based on driving by a million times and smelling it before I saw it. It always smelled good but waited to hear reviews before I ventured in. I saw the review on the Food network show, Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives~Dive being the keyword. It is located next to a gentleman's club and it is in an industrial area, but good food is good food and I don't really care where it is. So, my husband and I went in and got 2 lbs. of ribs and some mac 'n cheese. The ribs were very good, not too tender and moist and juicy. The sauce was also not over done with no sign of ketchup, I hate ketchup in my BBQ sauce. The mac n cheese was also pretty good, the portion was kinda small but still, pretty good and I would get it again. All in all, our meal came to around $18 and the food was well worth it. I do recommend it but please remember that this is a pit beef joint, not a restaurant. Dont dress up and bring the family for Sunday dinner. read more
