Great service and food. Everything from appetizers to dessert was amazing. This was our first visit. We will be back. Outdoor dining was very comfortable. The staff was very attentive. read more

Have had a handful of great dining experiences here already. A welcome addition to the Shelton restaurant scene.. definitely a step up from what I've been used to locally the food is very good! Service and drinks on point also. Nice job keep up the great work read more

The oysters were AMAZING! So delicious and the dining area so well colored(I love the green!) and the service was great!

I grew up in the area and to be kind Downtown Shelton was not a place you would actually want to spend any time. But that's not true anymore. There are lots of new restaurants and coffee shops worth a look. Chaplain is at the top of the heap of these new restaurants at least based on price and general fanciness. Its very nice inside though its not a particular huge place. Its got a nice outside area when the weather is nice though the street is pretty busy and noisy. We met friends and had a 7pm reservation on Friday nigh (it was pretty busy) and were seated at 7:15, which set the tone for the evening. Everything was very slooooooow. We probably didn't get our apps for an hour or more after being seated. They seemed to be properly staffed from a waitstaff perspective but the kitchen seemed backed up. The wine list is solid, even by the glass. The menu is generally pretty limited but most people should be able to find something they like. Anyway a couple people (including me) had the kale salad, I'm not really a kale guy but this salad was outstanding. I can't believe my life has come down to raving about a kale salad on Yelp, but here we are. Just get it and you won't be sorry. My friend is still talking about the mussels app so it must have been pretty good. Everyone was happy with their meals (I had the linguini and clams). Overall we didn't hang around any longer than necessary and we were there over 3 hours because things moved so slowly. It ok for us because we were with friends we hadn't seen in a while. The food seemed very carefully prepared so even if the kitchen was backed up the food quality definitely didn't suffer. The vibe was definitely "trendy" and upscale so I really don't see my parents hanging out here but it was pretty busy and even when we left after 10pm the bar was full and the restaurant still probably half full. Its definitely not inexpensive so be prepared. And make a reservation at least on weekends. Overall its a nice addition to Downtown Shelton and I really hope they do well. I don't see other reviews mentioning slow service so I'll say we caught them on a bad night service-wise. Check it out if you want a nice night out. read more

average food expensive prices difficult parkingprobably would not go back classy resturants indowntown shelton probably not a good choice

Let me begin by saying the food is very, very good. However, the experience left us not wanting to return any time soon. My party of 4 were seated sooner than our reservation. That was great. They just opened the outdoor patio, and we were seated outside. It was much quieter outside, and they were finally able to light the heating lamp (took many minutes and attempts!). We received our first round of drinks and all was good. The drinks were very tasty and unique. We put in our order for appetizers and dinner... and the wait began! We received our SECOND round of drinks.. still no appetizers. We finished our drinks and, yay, the appetizer showed up... crispy polenta fries... Excellent! Then we waited longer. Another table was seated near us, they ordered, received their meal, ate, and left... and we waited! We ordered the Octopus, Black Sea Bass and 2 Chaplin burgers... and we waited! We asked the waitress for some bread... I'm still waiting! After 2 hours! the manager came over, and without asking, opened a bottle of sparkling wine and poured out 4 glasses! We were currently drinking bourbon, so I am not sure why he offered and poured wine without asking if we wanted it... we returned the drinks and suggested he offer us bourbon. He provided 4 glasses of bourbon, less than one shot each! And we waited!!! After 2.5 hours of waiting, our dinner finally came out! At this point, no bread and no additional water was offered. We finished our meals, and when the waitress asked if we wanted dessert, we said "about an hour ago, maybe!". We asked what the problem was, and never received an explanation. We asked what they were going to do for us, and they said they would "take care of us". NOTHING. Finally after asking again, the manager removed a single round of drinks! This is not an inexpensive restaurant. The restaurant is new, and only open for a week or so. One would think that they would do EVERYTHING in their power to correct this situation! The meal still ended up costing more then $250-and we didn't even get dessert and coffee! We were there to celebrate my husband's birthday, and it was a flop! This could have been a wonderful experience, but it turned into a long, drawn out disappointment. Fortunately, we were all not starved when we arrived, and we enjoyed our friend's company otherwise this would have been a REAL DISASTER! read more

Decided to give this new restaurant a try. As the others have said, the food is excellent! Clam chowder and broccoli rabe to start, both very good. Both had NY strip which was cooked perfectly. I had the mashed potatoes, let's just say incredible. The fries my husband had were also very tasty. We had wine but started with a cocktail, Whiskey Tart which was great. The one odd thing was that they don't bring bread to the table. When we got our dinner and still didn't get any we asked. We were told they don't bring bread, it's on the appetizer menu with a variety of butters. So we went ahead and ordered. Let me say the butters were very good but I still think the bread should be brought to table anyway. The inside was nice but small. They have a large outdoor section with heated lamps. My feeling is that it would have been better to make the inside bigger, really no view from the outside. But that's just me, some like to sit outside. Young group of servers but the service was very good. Will definitely be back. read more

Delicious!!! Everything was out of this world and do yourself a favor and get the bee's knee's -- it's honestly the most delicious cocktail I've ever tasted! *pro tip: eat the editable flower read more

Everything was very. All 4 of us enjoyed our meals, New York strip was huge and cooked perfectly. It was not a highest end experience but the food was more inventive than expected. read more

We had a great night out at Chaplin from start to finish. This is upscale new sytle steakhouse with some seriously good seafood, pastas, creative dishes and standards. Also serving seasonal apps that range from seafood tower to panzanella (which was incredible). I had an excellent 10 oz prime filet and my wife enjoyed the equally strong ny strip with added sauces and sides. All steaks are prime so you shouldn't have sticker shock, it is going to cost more. But it delivers. Sides with the steaks are ala carte and very very good and plentiful to share. Deserts equally stood out thought limited in choice. The staff and bar are very well trained and serve some seriously good cocktails. Walter took very good care of us. A very good and versatile wine list as well where we enjoyed a bottle of Caymus Cab which was superb. Tables for 2 are limited and you will likely sit in the bar area along the window or one of the few in the dining room, either way we love the bar area and enjoyed it. There is also an outside patio which is inviting. We will be back, for certain. read more

This is a great place. The staff is friendly and helpful. We loved the decor. Very unique but very appealing. The food was delicious. We loved the polenta fries and shrimp cocktail. My son had the duck. I had chicken and my friend had the salmon. They were all good. Cocktails were great. My only feedback is there are limited fish / seafood options. It was difficult for my friend to find something she wanted to eat. read more

Might be the best restaurant in Shelton. The food is exceptional. The service is always stellar, and the ambiance is relaxing without being boring. The design aesthetics and outdoor patio are always welcoming. read more

This place is absolutely amazing. From the atmosphere to the food to the staff! My favorite restaurant in town and so happy it's in Shelton!

Sat at the bar. Attentive and prompt service. Had Reisling, oysters, meatballs and the burger. Great food! Pretty bar.

Just had dinner, literally leaving the door as we speak writing this review. My boyfriend and I decided to travel 40 minutes from where we live, to try this new place we've heard a lot about-Chaplin. The atmosphere was great, from the Kelly green tiled wall to the cymbals lighting up the bar with Edison lightbulbs, was an amazing touch. We started our evening at the bar, with a couple espresso martinis made by Josh, who is a fantastic mixologist! He is fun, personable, and is very passionate about his craft! Once seated, we were greeted by Anna, our server, she was amazing. Anna was polite, friendly, knowledgeable, great energy, and very straightforward. She was very attentive to all her tables, even down to making sure glasses of water were full at all times for all customers she was serving. We hope we can come back & see Anna & Josh again! We started with warm sourdough (should be complimentary if the wait times are long for entrees-as it was this evening), shrimp cocktail (delicious cocktail sauce, it wasn't just ketchup), and meatballs. The meatballs, were decent, they need more bite to them, less bread. The NY strip steaks were good. Sauces were fantastic, Demi & Béarnaise were our favorites. We think the highlight of tonight was the service; we wish service was like this everywhere! read more

Delicious food but service seriously lacking, so slow. I would say depends who you get because I have gone twice and had great service and then again and had so slow and inattentive. Won't be back for atleast six months, need to give some time for them to figure it out. Anyone who wants specifics comment to me and I'll explain more on the experience. read more

We enjoyed the food and the space but our food was seriously delayed. 2 hours for appetizers and entrees. Not like they were slammed either. The server mentioned the kitchen was running behind 30 mins but then we saw people who arrived after us getting the same things we ordered so she was full of it. I don't mind a mistake, but own and take care of the customer. Bummer Mother's Day dinner for sure. :( read more

Chaplin is a wonderful new restaurant that served me the best NY Strip I've ever eaten. We were with a large party so we ordered a lot of the menu and nothing disappointed! Will definitely be going back. read more

Cool little gem hidden in Shelton. That said, parking is on the street and can be a challenge. There is a public pay as you go lot across the street from the restaurant which I recommend otherwise you will be driving in circles for a long time. The restaurant itself is small which means it's loud. If you're looking for an intimate dinner this is probably not the place for you. As for the food, mussel appetizers were awesome. French onion soup could have used some more broth and less bread but good. I had the dry aged ribeye steak. My expectation was a 30 day dry age (that would be comparable to the price of the steak at $65); however it was not. It was a good steak but the menu was unfortunately in my opinion misleading. Portions were on the smaller side, my son had linguini and clams, and could have had three more orders but he's a growing boy. That said I would definitely go back and would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a good meal. read more

Great atmosphere, good food. Unfortunately this place will not last in downtown Shelton. A 10 ounce fillet, , no sides ,,no sauce plain on a plate $60 , add sauce, a salad and a moderate glass of wine, with tip, you're at $100 tab per person. Maybe in Manhattan, but you're not paying Manhattan rent. This is a special occasion place, not sure they can last when you break the bank taking a family out to dinner. I've had just as good a cut of meat, for half the price in other nearby locations. read more

don't bother making a reservation, they don' honor it. They will politely ask you to take a drink at the bar and then ignore you as they seat smaller tables of 2 to 4, we went on Saturday night with a reservation for 6 people to be seated outside. we waited for 45 minutes, then a patron who had stepped outside (where we had to wait), told us their meal didnt arrive for 45 minutes. Our reservations had been made 8 days in advance. read more

Everything is absolutely amazing I was very impressed with all aspects of this restaurant. I was visiting for a conference and will be back

Great little place. Food is fresh and fantastic. I'm still talking about the duck. Truffle fries are one of a kind. Service was great.

This was not my first time visiting Chaplin, I want to start by saying every time I have visited this restaurant it has been an awesome experience. It is truly a hidden gem in Shelton. The vibe is so upbeat and the staff is amazing. We went with another couple and started off in the bar. The bar staff is always very attentive and makes great drinks. My personal favorite is one of the Staff creations, The Real Dill. Mel, Walter and Peter have all served us at the bar and each one has made delicious drinks. The manager, Fran, always makes sure everything is running smoothly and makes it a point to visit the table to say hello and make you feel at home. Our waiter, Jake, was extremely attentive and very helpful explaining the entree's. We asked several questions about items on the menu and he was very patient and on point with his explanations. It was an extremely busy night and he made sure he visited our table often to see if we were happy with our appetizers, main entrée, drinks and dessert. I give him an A+++!! Everything came out in a timely manner and was absolutely delicious. We started off with the Brussel sprouts, mussels, charred octupus and sour dough bread for appetizers and they were all amazing. The burger, filet and Bronzino were to die for! And yes, I had a taste of everyone's meal. I would highly recommend Chaplin's and I cannot wait to go back! read more

My husband and I were visiting from So Cal looking for steak and seafood (specifically oysters) and this seemed like the best option in town. We feel like we scored! Here's what we had....olives, bread with flavored butters and garlic confit, Boston Bibb salad, filet mignon with chimichurri and green peppercorn demi-glace, mushrooms, and pole beans. Everthying was exceptional, the only disappointment was not having room for dessert. We don't drink and even the mocktail was delicious. If this place was near our house we would eat here every week, I guess we will have to settle for stopping by when we are in town. read more

Good food, quality, but for the price there are alot better. Its convenient cause its close to home. Parking us ruff. But overall...7.5 out of 10 read more

My brother's birthday dinner could not have been more special. The staff was outstanding, especially our server Sonya. The general manager Francisco was also so wonderful to us. The pace that the food was brought out was perfect. They didn't keep us waiting but we didn't feel rushed. The atmosphere, the decor, the lighting, the music, the volume, the details... like PERFECT. And the food... The only meal I ever had that compared was one that I had while vacationing in Hawaii. It's hard to believe this place is local. I'm so impressed, I couldn't come up with a single complaint if I tried! read more

Not worth the prices. At the present pricing, had high expectations but my steak was undercooked and multiple errors throughout the meal. Mussels were very underwhelming, the sausage was more bountiful than mussels. Potential but not on the list to go back read more

Phenomenal dinner-clam chowder, bone marrow & mussels appetizers. 10 oz filet (medium rare), 16oz dry aged ribeye (rare), mushrooms, sautéed greens & mixed salad for dinner. So good!! Our server April was attentive, intuitive & genial. It is pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. We will be back for sure. read more

the foods great but the service and wait time was sub par. made a reservation weeks in advance and when we got here they sat people who'd missed there reservation by a full day befor us and had us wait 20 mins for a table. when we ordered they informed us that we were to late for brunch (by 20 mins because of the seating). they also suggested we should get appetizers because the kitchen is backed up and it be a 45 min wait. it took well over an hr and we watched as brunch was still being brought out ,ordered , and served to tables around us. this was a celebration diner that my family will never let me live down and not in a good way. read more

I was excited to try this new seafood and steak house but left disappointed. Very expensive for the quality of the food. The shrimp cocktail was awful, watery limp looked like they defrosted a frozen shrimp ring from Big Y. The mussels were good, very small portion. The burata was excellent. The bacon was ok but should have been cooked longer. We had to ask for bread and got two small slices and we were a table of four! We split the 32oz porterhouse which was good not great. They should take a lesson from Joseph's in Bridgeport. The sea bass was ok, but very bland. The asparagus was very charred and a very small portion. The whipped potatoes were good. The drinks were a very light pour, but good. The staff was friendly. The decor is lovely. They packed the tables in the small space and had the patio doors open which brought in all the outside traffic noise, lots of motorcycles out last night. Could have potential to be great, but they really need to step up their quality game for those prices in Shelton. read more

It pains me to give this place one star. The bartender, Walter, was awesome. We were having a great time. Really fun place. Arrived at 6:00 and sat at the bar. At 6:30 we were transferred into the formal restaurant. We told the waitress we were going to have their best steak and to make sure it was aged as we were seated. We also stated that we were not in a rush and we're going to enjoy old friends and have a nice casual evening. We were seated at an horrible table. After suggesting that we would pay an extra hundred bucks to have a good table, which they did accommodate, we ordered the steak tartar, arancinis and polenta fries. Really tasty. I personally ordered a couple bottles of sparkling water and those with me also ordered at least fifty dollars worth of drinks. Here is where it goes bad. At 8:34, the waitress comes out and says they are out the New York Strips we ordered (2) and the tenderloins (2). No big deal. So we say "how about we get four Ribeyes or two dry-aged porterhouse steaks (for two, mind you $230.00)? They had "no steak." The waitress then says they were getting a delivery in "twenty minutes" and the "owner" then comes out and apologizes and states he would get us some complimentary stuff while we waited and dinner should be on the table by 9:30. At 9:02, we are begging for bread. No food, no accommodations, nothing. At 9:35 the steak was "still on the way." If this was true, which it appeared it was not, dinner would not be on the table until well after ten. So we asked for the check. After spending about $120 at the bar, we are then presented a bill for about $103 for two bottles of water and three tiny, but tasty appetizers. I was inclined not to leave a tip, but threw an extra $20.00 on the tab as it wasn't the waitresses fault. As we are leaving, we notice almost every table that arrived after us had steak. No apology, nothing. Three and a half hours later, somewhere north of $225 spent, we leave and go out to eat at a real place that actually had steak. Super disgusted and disappointed. With that being said, Walter, the bartender, deserves five stars. If he owned the place this would never have happened. He actually cares about the customer and their experience. The owner apparently does not or doesn't care. Not sure. The food deserves four stars. Had we actually been served dinner, it may well have been a five star place. The restaurant service deserves less than one. How is it that a place which is supposed to be the "best" in Shelton runs out of food on a Friday night and then makes absolutely zero accommodations for making us wait three and a half hours not to even eat dinner? Sadly, I will not go back and I would suggest that you consider not eating there as well. A great bar, great bartender, offset by a really horrible customer service oriented restaurant. read more
