Menu 1/2024

Walking in and surveying the crowd, I got the impression this is the type of place men go to get away from their wives for a while. Dark sports bar vibes. The bartender was nice to us and super-attentive. They didn't have any ciders on tap but did have a great selection of cans. I went the beer route with a Soft Parade and my husband had a Guinness. After looking over the menu, we decided to make a little sampler platter (bummer they don't have one on the menu.) Prices were fair; I almost felt like I was transported back to 2019 before The Thing Happened. Food came up quick; we got the chicken fingers with fries and an order of cheese sticks. The chicken fingers were very generic; standard, flat GFS tendies. A little disappointing. It's my understanding (by reading reviews) they used to be better. Fries were cooked perfectly well done. The mozz sticks were lukewarm. Weirdly, their chicken tenders are served with cocktail sauce and sweet and sour by default. We told the bartender we didn't want either but would want BBQ instead. We got charged for the BBQ sauce .___. Not cool. Anyway, like most old bars, this place gets by on nostalgia by regulars. Unless you've been coming here for twenty years, it's probably not gonna blow you away.

Roast Beef Sandwich. Before the meltdown.

Arrived a bit after 1 PM on a sunny summer Sunday. Maybe a dozen or so patrons there. Champs has a good draft beer selection, though most of the taps were out of order when we went due to some mechanical problem. They also have a large selection of canned/bottled beers, so we got a couple cans of Old Nation Brewing's M-43. My wife got a basic burger and said it was ok. I got the roast beef sandwich, which was a bit of a letdown. They didn't stint on the toppings-plenty of beef and the advertised sauteed veggies--but they really could have done with less of them. The sandwich fell apart when I tried to pick it up. About half of it had slid completly off the bun. Some of the would-be sandwich fillings were actually covered by the potato chips in kind of a reverse loaded potato dish, so the problem started in the kitchen and could have been corrected there. The roast beef came in thick slices, though didn't have a lot of flavor. Some of the grilled onions were quite underdone. Atmosphere-wise, it's a pleasant small town bar. Foodwise, it might not be the best option in the area.

Always a good stop for burgers, beer and fun. Lots of TVs to watch the game , gambling machines and more. Staff friendly and fast. Lots of parking lots near by and it's a seat yourself when you arrive

2 scrambled eggs, sliced ham, hash browns well done, as requested, rye toast and coffee.

Curious about this place. I stopped by on a late Thursday morning and ordered breakfast, availabl until 11am...which only allows one hour from their opening time at 10am. I ordered the 2 scrambled eggs, ham, hash browns well done, rye toast breakfast $5.50. It was huge, and I could not finish it. Rye toast was really good with just enough butter. The hash browns are cubed potatoes not shredded, glad I ordered well done so they were a little crispy. Thin slices of ham, huge portion. Enjoyed the coffee. Waitstaff very pleasant.

We've heard legends of the Long Islands at Champs from our friends for years. Finally, the time came for us to try for ourselves. They did not disappoint. One of the best Long Islands I've ever had. Can't believe it was only $12 for top shelf. The waitress was super nice and attentive. The only food we had was curly fries and they were decent. I loved the vibe here, hometown pub where the employees know the locals and treat you like you've been friends for years.

It seems like they would benefit from an "order to table" type system so they don't have to keep coming outside to check (not that it bothers me at all, just felt bad having them need to do it). Beer list is big and expansive and also very straightforward. I appreciated the thorough tasting notes. They do also have food (small bites mainly like cheese and charcuterie) but they're super chill about you bringing stuff in which is nice. We picked up Gus's right down the street. I loved the beer and the service was excellent. They're super helpful and kind people. The space is beautiful too. I wasn't surprised to see that they do weddings. Their German-style beers are unique and thoughtfully crafted, offering something different from the typical brewery lineup. You can tell they put a lot of care into brewing historic and traditional beer styles. My only wish is that they offered a few more non-alcoholic beverage options and some food. Having those available would make it easier to stay longer and accommodate a wider variety of guests. Even so, it's a great spot for beer lovers looking for a distinctive brewery experience.

The entire staff was helpful, but the MVP was the hostess who supplied us with lollipops and helped to move all of our stuff to a booth when one became available. The menu offers a lot of delicious options, and both my husband and our friend loved the Buttermilk Fried Chicken. I ordered the Salmon, which was okay. The Spanish Coffee was one of the best I've had. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was how my food allergies were handled. I had included my dietary restrictions in our reservation and also called the restaurant the night before to make sure they could accommodate me. I was reassured after they checked with the kitchen that most items on the menu could be modified to work within my restrictions. Based on that conversation, I felt comfortable keeping our reservation. Since we were dining with others for a birthday celebration, I had hoped the information from my reservation and phone call would have been communicated to our server so I wouldn't need to go through all of my restrictions again at the table. Instead, I had to explain everything during dinner. Because the restaurant is extremely loud and the tables are packed closely together, our server had to stand across the table from me, which meant having to discuss my allergies loudly in front of our entire party and the surrounding tables. It was an uncomfortable and awkward situation. What was most frustrating, however, was then being told that my options were essentially limited to a protein and green beans. This was a far cry from what I had been told the night before that the kitchen could modify most items on the menu to accommodate me. I completely understand that not every restaurant can accommodate every allergy or dietary restriction, and I don't expect them to. My concern is that I specifically called ahead for this reason and relied on the information I was given. Had I been told beforehand that my options would be so limited, we simply would have chosen another restaurant where I could enjoy a nice meal along with everyone else for my husband's birthday. For anyone dining with significant food allergies or restrictions, I would recommend getting very specific information about what can actually be accommodated before making a reservation.

Located just outside of the main downtown area, the Canopy Lounge is hidden in the back of a parking lot. It's a well-kept secret, but one worth sharing. The ambiance is like a cozy sports bar with a rustic twist. There are several options for seating (high top tables, bar in the back, and a lounge-type area up front with a sofa and some easy chairs. We decided to sit in the lounge type area and took advantage of the happy hour specials. We did an order of mussels and fries for the adults, macaroni and cheese for the kiddos (one order split 2 ways, which was more than enough for them). Food was tasty and the happy hour drinks hit the spot all the way around. Our server did a fantastic job of making sure that our waters stayed filled and of bringing our food promptly. There were a number of interesting options on the menu, including venison chili and backstrap, as well as Korean BBQ duck. We bookmarked those to try for next time!

Aside form the pizza, I got an old fashion from the bar which was well made and tasty in its own right at a very reasonable price of $8 which borders on a steal in my book. Relative to the restaurant it is quite large with ample seating and a slew of TV's strategically scattered about to allow you to watch the big game which we did on this occasion watching UConn score an amazing comeback win against Duke in an Elite 8 game. NICE! The game and the food alone made for a memorable and enjoyable dining experience for sure. Staff is super friendly with great follow up and was another big plus for us. The restaurant itself is bright, colorful, clean, and really well designed. I loved the clever bench seating, the bar was well stocked, and there's outdoor seating plus an upstairs area that looked really cool. They also have a walk-up taco window outside, which is a fun idea. We sat in the bar area, and the service was amazing. Everyone was friendly and attentive. The food, though, was really underwhelming. Almost everything we tried lacked seasoning and flavor. I ordered the chicken enchiladas, which had very little chicken and were pretty bland. I did like the very thinly sliced jalapeños on top. The rice was nice and fluffy but didn't have much flavor, and they serve black beans, which just aren't my preference with Mexican food. The house-made salsa was surprisingly sweet, and I was disappointed that the chips didn't seem house-made. If I'm going out for Mexican food, fresh chips are one of those little things I really look forward to. My husband ordered tacos at $6 each, which felt pretty steep considering we're used to excellent tacos in the $2-$3 range. His carne asada was cooked closer to medium rare, which wasn't what we expected at all from carne asada. The queso was another disappointment. It tasted very similar to Rico's cheese sauce you can buy at the grocery store. Overall, great service, great decor, very clean and a fun atmosphere, but the food just didn't match the setting or the reviews for us. At these prices, I expected a lot more flavor. Unfortunately, we left pretty disappointed.
