We Plumb - New tub and surround install with sheet rock repair

I asked multiple companies for a quote and Zach was available same day. He initially didn't want to provide a quick quote without seeing everything in person, but I pleaded and he eventually gave me a range of estimates based on what he knew and they were all reasonable (relative to the Austin market) . It frustrates me as an impatient homeowner when I can't get immediate quotes, but I think the need for companies to see everything in person is probably a good sign. He doesn't want to just tell people what they want to hear to get in the door and then surprise them when the price changes because something about the project made it more difficult. He was then willing to answer my technical questions about potentially repairing my existing water heater and even some local parts stores I could look at for the components that weren't working for my existing water heater. We also talked about CoA rebates, heat pumps, and all the options for water heaters. Companies have a lot of incentive to gatekeep this kind of information and Zach was willing to just help me out as I formed a plan that took my current budget into account. I ended up replacing my own water heater, but I am a stubborn, frugal person. Zach's customer service, availability, and reasonable quotes are appreciated. If my financial situation improves, I'll probably be giving him a call next time I have plumbing needs.

TLDR: Hot Rod is not in it to help you. Their techs, management, and ownership approach customer…read moreservice with such a profit-retention mentality that you as a customer will always be wrong and will likely pay more than what you agreed to. They'll even manifest a convenient cover story to exonerate themselves. Do yourself a favor, go to the next HVAC listing. ____________________________________________ I'm not a big fan of negative reviews, as I assume they're usually written in an emotionally charged state. I decided to wait a week to gather my thoughts and write as mindfully as possible. Pros: I hired this company because they were the earliest available to assist with a sweltering A/C issue. The technician was cordial and confidently explained what he believed to be the issue. Cons: The technician completed his job and told me that it should be cooling off in the next three hours. When the temperature began to rise after three hours, I called the company and they agreed to send someone the next morning. The next day, the technician told me that the issue wasn't with the first A/C unit, but another unit that he didn't check. He quoted me several prices for a temporary patch, the price of the visit to evaluate the second unit, and the prices for the parts that needed to be ordered. When I asked why the second unit hadn't been evaluated initially, he told me that I had only requested the first unit to be checked. This is when I realized they were trying to blame the customer for their misevaluation. I am not an HVAC tech nor do I claim to have any knowledge of HVAC workings. I don't even know where the units are, much less know which one is broken and why. I simply called Hot Rod and said "It's hot. Fix it." I was taken aback by the blame game, but I was desperately going into day 2 of a broken AC in a medical office with patients. So I authorized the patch to get the air flowing again. I had a weird feeling about how things were being handled, so I hired another company to double check. They came out that night and advised me that the issue was not what Hot Rod had reported. Furthermore, their "patch" was electrical tape that they wanted to charge $125 for. When I called Hot Rod and spoke with the office manager about my experience and the shoddy workmanship, she recited the technicians version to me that I had requested only one unit to be evaluated. She spoke to me condescendingly and patronized me when I asked to speak to the owner. I left my number to be called by the owner, but instead I received an email stating that I had only asked for one unit to be serviced and that's what they did. She didn't hear my side or answer questions about their work. She essentially wrote her letter and washed her hands of it. That's the company that exists at Hot Rod, from the bottom to the top.

It happened at 4:30 on a Friday in July and with all the 100+ temps that week, the three other companies I called in a panic were too busy to come out. A local friend of mine said she'd had two years of good service from Airco, so I tried them next and they got us some help in just a few hours. Ernie the technician was AMAZING, friendly and professional and a relief to work with. Later on during the water damage mitigation process with TX Dry Out & Restoration, we ended up needing to replace the old out-of-code HVAC, and had a great experience with Airco. Brandon was extremely helpful and happy to coordinate with TX Dry Out to get our new unit installed on schedule amid all the restoration work. Both Ernie and Brandon went above and beyond for us during a very stressful time, and I'm so grateful! Thank you, Airco!

Several years ago, Airco installed a 3-ton variable-speed system in a house that had previously had a 2-ton unit (and a history of trouble keeping cool). After about a year of operation, our tenants reported mold in the ducts, high humidity, and a short-cycling unit. Our investigation found that the installer, Stuart, had never pulled a permit for the work. I want to be candid: it took a negative Yelp review to get Airco's attention. Jeremy reached out, recommended we upsize the ductwork, offered a very fair price, and agreed to close out the permits. I'm slow to trust, so I got second and third opinions from other HVAC companies -- they confirmed the system size was correct for the house, and that the ductwork should have been upsized at the original install. My own Manual J calculations agreed with Jeremy's. Notably, Jeremy was the only installer I could find who was actually willing to run a Manual J. He also followed through on pulling permits and getting the city inspection scheduled. Airco worked to schedule the new duct installation during the one week we'd be in town -- during peak season, no less -- and their crew moved fast and stayed professional, which I appreciated given how brutal a Texas attic is this time of year. A few days in, the system is no longer short-cycling, and indoor humidity has dropped to about 63%. Still a touch higher than ideal, but we think we can chase the rest of it down -- possibly window seals, possibly fan settings or duct leakage. I was impressed enough that I also used Airco for a plumbing call this week.
