Best vegan option and Mexican fusion at that in and around the Washington DC area. Their menu is 100% vegan and they serve cocktails with some other alcohol options. Their menu has good taco, enchilada and quesadilla options primarily. I tried their taco trio which gives an option to choose three different taco types that they serve on menu on one platter. They give a green spicy sauce on the side which is amazing and spicyy! You will love it if you are a pepper based spice lover like me. Overall clean, they take the order from the screen at the entrance with their app. From ordering until you pick the order up, there is no contact with the employees involved which is good. I've thought long and hard about updating this review because I think the tacos are pretty good but the more I've reflected on this place, the more I've come to believe it is wildly overpriced for what you're receiving. Part of this is because I'm also aware of what ingredients go into their tacos and the cost per taco is not that high. Chaia charges $4 per taco. This is actually more expensive than basically any other taco place in DC, which already has expensive tacos. I believe Taco Bamba down the street has a few specialty tacos that are maybe slightly more expensive but they are using a variety of ingredients, not just vegetables. The one day I came in during National Vegan Day and they were using one or two ingredients on tacos and charging the same price. No word on whether a portion of the profits were going to some kind of sustainable organization or not. I want to love this place but I just can't anymore. read more

Visited Chaia Tacos while traveling for work. Super cute location, incredible decor, super nice staff. Love how everything is vegan or vegetarian and super inventive and fun. There's plenty of options for anyone including yummy side dishes and Kombucha on top (hello hipster!) Sat outside and it was absolutely glorious outside. A huge queue formed after I had ordered, which I assume was a workday lunch hour rush. The only reason why Chaia doesn't get 5 stars is because (while I absolutely loved the concept and what they were doing), I didn't LOVE any of my tacos - I really liked the mushroom one and found the carrot one to be a bit bizarre and the potato was okay but kind of weird as a taco. Okay I need to start this review off by letting y'all know I am an omnivore through and through, and I also live for gluten. But I'd seen Chaia on Instagram so many times that I just *had* to try it out, and as luck would have it, my best friend is a vegetarian. I suppose it's a good thing I no longer live in the MVS neighborhood, because if I did, I'd be spending alllllll my money at the newly-opened (and oh-so gorgeous) Chaia on I Street. I came into Chaia with pretty high expectations (see: all the 5 star Yelp reviews) and they were handily met. At about 1 pm on a weekday, there was still a lot of lunch crowd but the staff moved efficiently and with beaming smiles (seriously, everyone working here was smiling). While I pretty much wanted to order the entire menu, I thought I should just stick to a taco trio ($12). I narrowed down my choices to the Roasted Butternut Squash (with goat cheese, caramelized onions, chipotle yogurt, and fresh torn mint), Creamy Kale and Potato (with pepperjack, poblano crema, tomatillo salsla, and pickled red onion), and the Citrus-Roasted Beet (with ricotta salata, cilantro-lime yogurt, and fresh jalapeno). Also, since I hadn't consumed any caffeine yet, I ordered the hot spiced cafe au lait (with oat milk, lavender, cinnamon, and cardamom). Tacos: All were delicious and I devoured them, but the beet taco was my favorite by far. I love beets, but it can be hard to get them perfect. There was no trace of the heavy-earthy taste they so famously carry, and the taco was just filled to the brim with these tender purple beauties. The kale and potato taco was also excellent - the addition of the pickled red onion helped to provide a necessary tangy contrast to the creaminess of everything else. I enjoyed the butternut squash taco, but lack of contrast with textures made it inferior to the other two. While still very tasty, it felt just too mushy for me. The tacos themselves are handmade each day; you can see a woman working behind the counter shaping each one. The flavors change with the seasons, so don't be surprised if you visit in July and the taco fillings are drastically different than the hearty February offerings. The oat milk spiced cafe au lait was good, but I didn't get as much flavor from the spices (particularly lavender - it seemed completely lacking) as I had hoped. Vigilante nitro cold brew and hot brew are also available, as are various teas and kombucha. If you're looking for an adult beverage, they have wines, margaritas, ciders, and fruity cocktails. The sweets menu is limited but tempting. Perhaps next time I'll save room for the chocolate tortita (made with local DC chocolate - Harper Macaw!). Another 5 star reason to visit Chaia beyond just having delicious food and being a local business is that it is woman-owned and they are truly committed to sustainability. A win-win! read more

I honestly LOVED this place. My friend and I came here after work and it has super cute interior. The tacos were a pretty good price - $12 for 3. Who knew that vegetarian tacos were the perfect cure to a cold winter day? After the recent shout-out by the Washington Post, we popped in for a late weekend lunch. Three tacos for $12 with about five different to chose from. I opted for three different ones and each just about knocked my socks off. Sweet roasted butternut paired with creamy goat cheese was my favorite, nicely pairing sweet and salty flavors. The braised mushroom was packed with large, meaty buttons. The creamy kale and potato was very easily eclipsed by fantastic pickled onions that took me instantly to a summer picnic (more please!). Spouse got Smoky Collard Greens taco, which was not good, and I got Creamy Kale and Potato taco which was ok. The tortillas were delicious, and everything was fresh and tasty. Even though both of us loved the location, service, atmosphere, and concept, neither of us felt the food was that great. Better than I thought. I was not excited about vegan/vegtarian tacos. However, i got a coupon on five stars and saw it had great reviews. Pro tip- they do brunch on the weekends. They have more food options and you can do unlimited sangria.The sangria is delicious but not strong. It wasnt until we had about a pitcher a piece that we felt a little buzzed but it was very rich and refreshing. I got the Chilaquiles which were amazing despite not having meat lol. The ingredients were super good quality. They even hand make the corn tortillas, which adds to the great taste. As someone who is looking to have a more of a plant base diet, i will be back. Chaia just opened their second location near my apartment, and I'm super excited to have them as a neighbor. I went on the first night to check it out. The space is really pleasant - light, airy, and spacious, with plenty of seating. You go up to the counter to order and pay first, and then you can observe your tacos being made in the back. I ordered the kale and potato taco and a mushroom taco. They were both so good! The fillings are flavorful and plentiful, spilling out of the thick handmade corn tortilla. I especially loved the savory and slight creaminess of the kale. The tortilla was just thick enough to handle the weight of the filling and not fall apart. Readers of mine know that I like to bash my veggie friends who accompany me on my culinary adventures around D.C. While I do this in jest, it is time for my veggie fans to push back. There's a new restaurant in town, and its name is Chaia, and gosh darnn it they are some of the best tacos I have ever had. No joke. Located two blocks from the hustle of Chinatown, Chaia occupies a large storefront on I street. The restaurant is fairly easy to find--go down the street that has the TD Bank on the corner, and you'll run right into it. While I love Taco Bamba for it's greasy and meat-heavy menu, Chaia is heavy on flavor and is completely vegetarian-friendly. I have been here three times since it opened, and I can proudly say that I could eat these tacos for the rest of my life and be satisfied. There. I said it. Veggie friends: feel free to throw whatever cheese and vegetable taco at me. I deserve it. On a lighter note, Chaia has a rotating menu of tacos served with *gasp* homemade hand-made tortillas. Coming from California, this is a huge rarity in D.C. But you can see staff making the tortillas fresh right before they are stuffed with fresh ingredients on the assembly line. The tortillas help to make the tacos taste even better. Order whatever peaks your interest and sounds good, because I guarantee it is. I have had 80% of the menu, and I like all of the tacos pretty much equally. If one of my veggie friends threatened me and forced me to choose one, I'd pick the braised mushroom. But the potato and kale and rainbow carrot tacos come in a VERY close second. JUST ORDER THREE AND EAT THEM ALREADY! Oh also, the seasonal shrubs are amazing. Get one of these to go with your tacos.
