Tasty! A colleague wanted to get some tacos and as we were in a the neighborhood nearby for an event, we headed there for a lunch visit. On the way there, he said, "Oh, they're just vegetarian." Slightly disappointed, but willing to give it a go, we trudged on. So glad we did! The tacos are delicious, and I highly recommend the chips with black bean dip. Their drinks are tasty too! read more

This food was phenomenal! It was so nice to have such a good/healthy selection that didn't include meat and could be made vegan or GF. The teas were also super yummy. The restaurant was very clean and the staff were friendly! read more

Chaia has delicious vegetarian and vegan options for all. You can get 3 tacos for $13 which is a bargain. I've tried a few, but my favorite is the creamy kale & potato taco. It has large slices of potato and has a delicious crema on top. Could easily demolish three of those. The enchiladas are delicious as well but a little dry - they do include a lot of cheese however. Whether you're a vegetarian or looking for something different, it's definitely worth a try. The staff are very friendly as well! read more

This was a surprise hit - i LOVE chaia tacos. IMO the tacos are the best offering, and not all flavors are made equally. But the Chipotle Sweet Potato Hash and the Scrambled Egg & Black Bean are actually to die for. This is a great quick service place in this area, and helps accommodate some dietary issues (gluten free, vegetarian) that is still absolutely delicious for those without those restrictions. Also on toogoodtogo which is a big plus! read more

Happily surprised at how good the food was. Did not really think much of the place walking in. You order on their iPad and then just wait. Only a couple of people in there, so we didn't wait long. Food was really good for a fast casual place. Was expecting more generic blandness like a major chain, but the three of us ordered different things and walked away really happy. read more

Not my first visit but this time it was exceptional. Visited Chaia before a Sunday matinee at the Shakespeare Theatre in December. It wasn't crowded. Nice and warm inside on a very cold day. My daughter and I both got a trio of tacos. Hot, well spiced, good amount of fillings. Excellent! I should have expressed my thanks and appreciation to the staff in person. I regret that I didn't. It was all so yummy! A not-to-heavy lunch before the play. read more

Food is quite literally mouth-watering! I ordered the vegan black bean enchiladas and herby rice, a brussels sprout quesadilla, and a mushroom quesadilla. Absolutely delectable. The salsa that came with the quesadillas were "meh" but the fresh ingredients melded so well that they really don't need a salsa accompaniment. Ordered through Uber Eats and everything was neatly packaged in individual containers and food was warm on arrival. I also appreciate that the utensils were packaged. read more

I love chaia - it's easy to order with the kiosk, and their food always tastes great and fresh. The service is very quick too. If you're going to sit inside, the ambiance is very cute & boho/beachy. It is right around the corner from my office so my favorite thing is the habanero pelican dip + chips for a snack! My only criticism would be that It's just a tad expensive. read more

Are they really tacos? I'm conflicted. Are they really delicious? Yes. This is probably one of my favorite restaurants in DC now. The food is legitimately "good." Extremely flavorful, obviously fresh and the service time is fast. This is not your typical taco place - don't expect to taste the normal bean burrito flavors. I tried the mushroom, sweet potato, & kale tacos. Each were good so it's hard to pick a favorite. The tacos kind of reminded me of other American dishes served up in a convenient wrapper. I would also say for all the non vegans out there, don't be scared! The meal is very filling and it gives you the pleasant, not weighed down feeling. The restaurant is also very aesthetically pleasing. In our post-pandemic world, I think it would make a great place go grab a bite and study. I would definitely recommend checking this place out! I myself plan to go back and try new flavors next time! read more

After a really long and stressful day at the office. Decided to try this taco place. Went in knowing that it was a vegetarian joint. Opened minded. Paid more than I would at any other regular taco joint. Was I wowed or floored on the experience? NO. Were the tacos out of this world enough to warrant 4.5 start after all those reviews - no. Must be a lot of vegetarians in DC that don't eat meat. But leaves the question as to how can they rate that this taco place as better than all others? The place is really cute and chick. I will definitely return to try other items on the menu. It won't be anytime soon. But could venture back eventually. Ordered 4 tacos and the chips and dips. read more

Delicious tacos with complex flavors. Great vegetarian option! I would definitely go back.

The food is interesting, not great and a bit bland. The sweet potato taco was good but the cabbage taco was terrible. The tacos don't have any flavor or sauce and are dry. Wouldn't come here for the food. The restaurant is nice, interior is well designed. read more

Our tacos were delicious as they always are when we've ordered from the other location Georgetown. This location is much more spacious. They have 2 to restrooms that are clean, and outdoor seating is available, but they weren't set up today. I've seen it set up before though. The service was good, as we were greeted upon arrival and told "thanks for coming in" at our departure. The ONLY reason I docked a star is because I ordered my food online and chose a pickup time of 2:15 because that's precisely when mg arrival would be. My order was placed at 1:49, and the 6 tacos and side of beans were ready at 1:54. Don't get me wrong, it's obvious that they're efficient lol but I specified my time for a reason - I wanted fresh, warm tacos. My only suggestion would be to pay more attention to the time on online orders especially because the shells were kind of soggy and falling apart. If we didn't eat them there, they would've been worse off by the time we got home (25+ minutes away). Aside of that, great tacos and good service! read more

I've had my eye on this place for a while and was finally able check it out and got the braised mushroom enchiladas and a side of black beans through too good to go. The food was delicious and flavorful. This place is entirely vegetarian and fast casual, think chipotle. I did pick up, but the place was so cute I would definitely eat in! I thought it was just okay. I've had a wide range of amazing vegetarian food from impossible burgers to vegetarian Bun Bo Hue Vietnamese soup. Personally I think India makes the best vegetarian due to the sauces they use. All those experiences got me excited for Chaia Tacos because everyone is raving about it. Must be good right? I tried three different tacos and unfortunately nothing blew my mind. I was expecting some sort of religious vegetarian taco experience that would send me on a rollercoaster ride of salsa flavors that I would not forget. I did not get that. Not horrible, but not good enough that I'd come back. Their cocktails are really good though! Unpopular opinion, but I'd rather go somewhere else if I'm looking for a flavorful green meal. read more

I participated in an Outdoor Voices event in collaboration with Corepower Yoga at this Chaia tacos location in Chinatown. After the workout, I ordered their new breakfast taco and the seasonal butternut squash taco. Both came out very quickly and warm. The breakfast taco had eggs, beans, and cheese - pretty tasty but missing the wow factor. The butternut squash came with this cheesy sauce and micro greens - that one was really good! Butternut squash was seasoned well and cooked perfectly - not too hard or soft. I appreciate the plant-based idea behind this restaurant. Space is pretty spacious with nice lighting and cute decor. Great place for casual dining and vegetarian friendly. read more

After spending a morning being a local tourist, I needed some lunch to cap it all off. Chaia's been a longtime favorite for creative, fully vegetarian tacos. Vegetarian variety: 10/10. Everything is vegetarian and all but one taco can be made vegan. Taste: 9/10. Each taco has a totally distinctive flavor, and they've really thought through the pairing of core ingredients with salsas and garnishes. The braised mushroom (front) came with a red salsa and some feta to give it creaminess, and the collard greens taco (back) had a really tasty paprika salsa with radish to cut through the heavier flavors. Bonus point for the house made tortillas, which were lightly browned in my dish. Ambiance: 8/10. Ordering was contactless, done through a touchscreen kiosk at the front, and it took 8-10 minutes for my order to be ready. The decor was sunny and cheerful, with bright tiles on the floor and greenery throughout. Price: 7/10. $4.75 per taco or $13 for 3. For me, two tacos was a perfect light lunch. read more

This location is even better than the Georgetown location and so much more convenient. Located right in Chinatown, on I St, this location is bright, spacious, and full of seating. The staff here are always friendly and the food is always delicious, though sometimes cold. This location has more non-taco food options (including some vegan dishes, such as a seasonal vegan quesadilla). What really sets this location apart though is the fact that they have cocktails... real legit cocktails such as sangria, margaritas, and negronis for only $8. Even better is the fact that all wine, beer, and cocktails are half price during happy hour Mon-Fri from 3-7. Yes, that's right, $4 margaritas and negronis. I've already become a regular here. read more

I've had my eyes on this place for quite some time, and today I finally got the chance to stop in. It's a fast casual spot, where you order on your own using a computer screen, and your food is ready in minutes! Although I'm not a vegan/vegetarian by any means, the food is just as, if not more, satisfying. I went with the taco trio: choose your own combo. My favorite of the three was the braised mushroom, which was packed full and seasoned perfectly. I also was nearly stuffed with just the second taco, the creamy kale and potato - not a strong earthy kale taste, but definitely delish with pepper Jack and pickled onions. The last and final was the chipotle sweet potato hash with added greens. I'm looking forward to going back already and trying more! read more

Vegetarian and vegan tacos: Wait wait wait... don't run. There's a reason why Chaia currently has 67 reviews and 4.5 stars. Whoh whoh whoh- hold! Just read on - I gots three tacos: *Creamy Kale & Potato Taco ***Favorite Taco*** *Sautéed Asparagus & Spring Garlic *Braised Mushrooms I also got to try the Quesadilla and 2 types of dip. Almost everything was just perfect, outside of a little bunch of severely undercooked asparagus spears, each and everything I had was well cooked, nicely seasoned, and absolutely delicious. I'd go here again in a heartbeat. And to those of you who think that you need some form of animal protein in your meal. I used to be one of you! I swear, I literally thought that a meal could not be a meal without eating some form of meat. But places like Chaia and Shouk are really convincing me otherwise. I was FULL and super satiated after this vegetarian meal. It's a thing... vegetarians don't just live their lives hungry. Trust me. I'd highly encourage you to check this place out and see for yourself. The flavor combinations are really special and quite on point. read more

This is a restaurant that does it right. An array of plant based / vegan and vegetarian items that do not compromise on taste and flavor. They make everything in house, use high quality EVOO to cook everything (no seed oils), compostable packaging, and very fair prices. Absolutely outstanding tacos and other items. I would highly recommend the sweet potato tacos, the egg / black bean tacos, and the mushroom quesadilla (the vegan cheese was the best I've ever had in this one). Maybe you like tacos, and maybe you're veg-friendly or veg and just can't get in the mood for tacos as much when all the choices aren't as healthful as fresh veggies. Ok, then this place is for you. It's the taco eatery for people who want healthier tacos that don't make you feel like you're starving. That's probably my favorite part about this place. I can go here, order a trio of tacos and not feel like I'm still hungry. If I go elsewhere, three tacos is what I order, but I don't feel as satiated because other places double the taco tortillas and skimp (comparatively speaking) on the filling. Once you order tacos here, you'll know what I mean. The braised mushroom tacos are my favorite, followed by the collard greens. These are no joke tacos filled with so much veggie and mushroom goodness, you might think you've died and gone to veg taco heaven. Seriously, so good. The mushrooms have a wonderful depth of flavor without being drenched in oil. The collards are fresh and crisp but have an exceptionally garlic flavor - vampires beware. However, please note that if you're a dainty taco eater and don't like to get too messy, ummmm..... don't eat here unless you're willing to break it apart with a fork and eat the filling first. There are people who will do that, I've definitely seen people with forks for their tacos. That's not my style - I like to eat my tacos without utensils. Plus, the handmade yellow corn tortillas here are nice and sturdy for that purpose, and not to mention quite tasty. If you're gluten free, you're in luck. If you're vegetarian, you're in luck. If you're vegan, you may need to be en guard a bit more to ensure the order from the register translates to the folks prepping your food. I also like that this place has choices other than tacos, like a cauliflower quinoa bowl and tostados and side dishes like green rice, but really, is that what I want, a taco-like bowl? No, it's not, so, sorry, I can't comment on those. I'd rather order four tacos! However, they have a plethora of beverages to choose from like kombucha, nitro coffee, wine, beer, hibiscus tea, etc. So, you decide what suits your palate, you'll be quite refreshed. They also have a couple baked goods at the counter for a sweet finale - gluten free vegan cookies are small but satisfying. Because you really don't have room after eating the trio (or more) of tacos. Love the open space, the decor, the lighting, the outdoor seating, the open food prep area (behind glass), and the comfort. It's a great place to stop by for a quick meal. Mmmmm.... I want more tacos... read more

This restaurant has all the ingredients for a great lunch: 1. Good food and beverages I ordered a trio of tacos (creamy kale and potato, braised mushroom and asparagus), carrot kohlrabi slaw and a spiced cafe au lait. The kale and potato taco was creamy and flavorful. I wish I had ordered three of them because I didn't like the mushroom and asparagus tacos as much. The mushroom tacos needed a better supporting cast of ingredients. The feta and roasted tomato habanero salsa just didn't do it for me. I ended up scraping off some of the unflattering ingredients so that I could focus on the mushrooms. The asparagus tacos were hard to eat. I wish they had been cut up to make it easier to eat as part of the taco. I loved the carrot slaw with its colorful display of vegetables, tasty vinaigrette, fresh jalapeño and herbs. Yum! I was pleasantly surprised by the cafe au lait with oat milk. It was so good. My only complaint was that I hardly tasted the lavender. There's complimentary water and a nice selection of non-alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages on the menu. 2. Beautiful interior The restaurant features a beautiful interior with hanging light fixtures, wooden tables, white chairs, and strategically placed plants. This location is more spacious than the original Georgetown location and can seat as many as 40 people. Great choice for lunch. Highly recommended! read more

Wanted to like Chaia, the Georgetown location has been on my list for ages and there is so much hype around the place. But it's probably about a 3.5 for me and with so many options in Chinatown I doubt this will become a regular stop. What I liked: -house made corn tortillas, fried to order -cheesy delicious quesadilla, served with a nice salsa verde, for $3.50 -delicious, creamy black beans with diced jalapenos -great nitro cold brew (vigilante coffee), self-serve oat milk What I didn't: -the tacos. None of them had particularly interesting flavor profiles. The collard green was my least favorite, a taco full of bitter greens without much else going on. The mushroom, while good, was very straightforward. Simply sauteed mushrooms and I believe it had goat cheese as well. The kale and potato was my favorite, only because there were a few different textures and flavors in there (kale, potato, pickled red onion, etc). I would eat latter two tacos again, but definitely not over a good meat taco down the street at taco bamba (which also costs less). read more

It is no secret, I'm obsessed with Chaia Tacos! There was a time when I went back not once, not twice, but FOUR times in a week to get my fill and I don't regret it one bit! I used to have to trek to Georgetown to get my fix but with their new location in Mount Vernon Triangle, I am able to fulfill my workday cravings all the time! This location is bigger and brighter than the original with an expanded menu that allows them to play even more with their farmer's market finds! The entire menu is plant-based and changes seasonally. Their creamy potato and kale tacos have a special place in my heart but I also love their mushroom, butternut squash, and roasted beet dishes are in house. To be honest, I don't really love vegetables but the dishes here are so unique, tasty, and filling that I keep coming back for more. Things to note: + Their oat milk latte is steeped in lavender and cinnamon and is the absolute best + You can add an egg to any taco for a breakfast spin + For dessert they sell vegan pastries created by the owner of Sally's Middle Name When you order a meal from Chaia you are supporting a local, woman-owned business with a focus on sustainability (all of their products are compostable) . It's a new restaurant that us catering to the vegetarian/vegan trend. Found that they had opened by their sign at the corner of I and 7th St. They have Tacos and a "Bol" and I took the bowl. My boiled egg was purple, my only hope is the color came from beetroot otherwise I worked prefer my eggs to be a natural color. Great value for money. If I wasn't teaching that afternoon I'd have loved to taste the craft beer that's available there. Chaia is a vegetarian taco shop that's could easily convince the world to forgo meat. The tacos are THAT good. The sell 5 types of vegetarian tacos from creamy kale and potato to braised mushrooms. If you order a trip, it's $12. They also have something called a "beyond taco" that's like a taco pizza (let that sink in. #heaven). Once their liquor license is approved, they will sell a variety of beers, wines, and even sangria. The original location is in a small, historic building in Georgetown and it's gorgeous. Keeping the same design and style, the atmosphere is similar, but MUCH bigger. When you walk in, you're greeted by friendly staff. There's a large open room with plenty of tables and several long tables by the windows. You order your food and watch the staff create your taco. It comes out at the end of the line. If you love tacos, vegetarian or not, you must go here. Downtown DC is lucky to have Chaia here and it may be the best taco in the area. read more

The new location for this Georgetown veggie taco institution promises a slightly expanded menu, one which is still in progress as of this writing, but the tacos they're known for are plenty enough. Their vegetarian, seasonal, farm-to-table tacos are expensive, but worth it for those in need of a light meal. While the new location will never match the unique atmosphere of the little house on the canal that preceded it, this place is large and prominent, with signage in Mandarin befitting its Chinatown locale. The tacos were ready by the time I had finished freshening up in a very pleasant bathroom (an asset downtown, believe me). The more downtown areas of DC have never been much of a food destination, but the scene is expanding, and the only downside of stopping here is that you have to choose between this and a number of other promising new restaurants. read more

Veggie taco place with unique flavors and refreshing drinks! I had been to the one in Georgetown but this one is way more convenient. I visited twice as part of two different run groups so we got a free drink and/or taco each time. This already gave me the impression that this place not only wants to be part of the community but part of keeping the community healthy. The ingredients taste fresh and light. I love the braised mushroom and I generally forget what the other ones taste like bc the mushroom is so delicious. I'm always looking for ways to decrease waste, especially plastic, so I asked to have my drink in a glass and they told me that their cups are compostable. That's very cool but would have been nice to not have any waste at all. Next time I will bring my own drink container. They also have real bowls if you order multiple tacos. read more

Based truly on first impression, Chaia is an excellent choice. The food is almost exclusively plant-based and there are lots of options to cater to vegan and vegetarian diets. Even if you dont ascribe labels to your diet, there will be something you can enjoy. I've tried nearly all their tacos and I will swear by the braised mushroom. While I didn't love every taco, there was nothing horrible. Just not my personal favs. I would absolutely offer that green rice as a side is a must! Decor is spacious, open and features lots of natural light. Perfect spot for a quick meal either indoors or outdoors. On my first visit, service was amazing! Sweet potato nachos and sweet potato taco were delicious! We also loved the teas and kombucha. Lots of gluten free options

The staff were crazy busy handling a party order when we entered the place. We ordered on the computer and waited for 20 min till we saw one person prepare our food. She forgot to add vegan cheese to our soft tacos which we asked her to give. Then we found that the nachos and the enchiladas were tiny with no sides except some rice. The portions are kid size and may not be enough even for 1 person per main item if you are hungry. Next due to the quantities served,we had to buy few more sides to fill up our tummies but the computer would not work and the staff had to stop what she was doing to come and take our order manually. Next, The display pic for nachos on the order page had an additional Tahini dip which apparently is no longer a part of that order but the pic was not changed. This is not fair if they are selling a food item showing 2 sauces but only give your customers 1 sauce. Nacho chips are bland and tasteless and the quantity is good for a 6 year old to finish but not for an adult. There were 3 huge fans blowing air in the floor at multiple spots with risk of tripping on the cords and you will end up with flying tissues off your table as well as the receipts we got after paying were floating away as well!! Taste of the pumpkin seed dip was good but bitter at the end. Green rice was cold and bland. Soft tacos were yummy though they broke apart before we could gobble them up right after we got them to our table Overall, there is a lot of chance to improve customer satisfaction and serve more quantity of food with better quality in my opinion. read more

Some of the best tacos (veggie or not) in the entire area. I've been to the Georgetown location many times since it's close to work and this location is pretty much the same (except slightly bigger). Got a taco trio, a taco duo (?), 2 chips and with the habanero pepita and tahini black bean dips, and an iced hibiscus tea. The tacos traveled very well and were perfect as usual. The creamy kale and potato is my favorite, it's very heavy for a taco which you wouldn't expect. The braised mushroom taco was also heft and felt meaty. The collard taco was nice and smokey. The tortillas were perfect, love how they're made in house. There were a lot of chips that came with the dips. The habanero had just enough of a kick that I was looking for. The tea was a little tart for me but it was almost like a refreshing cranberry juice. This location is much easier to get to so I'll be aiming to come here more while there's still a pandemic going on. read more
