Decided to check this place out, I passed it a couple weeks ago heading to Chipotle. Not to far from my job so I walked over, around noon no line thankfully. I decided on a Al Pastor (Pork/Pineapple) & regular steak taco. I also got an Horchatia to drink, that was a mistake( two thumbs down, I have had better?)I will say my Al Pastor taco was better than the steak taco hands down, the place was brightly lit up with art and different colors on the wall, they have upstairs seating which is nice. The feel for the place is nice, there was about three workers working. I would go back but not in a hurry. read more

Sol is a fast casual place if you want to a quick meal. We came on a Friday night, and it wasn't too busy but it got busier as the night went on. They sell bowls, burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and salads. I got a carne asada bowl with most of the toppings. The meal itself was pretty decent, but needed some more flavor. Portion size was good too. They also have horchata and tamarind drinks: I would recommend the tamarind drink as it wasn't too sweet and flavorful. It seems most people do takeout, but there are a few tables on the upper levels if you wanted to sit down to eat. To use the bathroom, you must ask an employee for a key for the downstairs bathroom. read more

Sol Mexican Grill is fast casual, like a chipotle. We stopped by here after being in the convention center, it was a quick walk from it. The inside is pretty small, they had probably 5 tables upstairs, and they had a few tables outside. If they are busy, you might have to take your food to eat somewhere else. I ordered the nachos. They had a lot of toppings to choose from, which was nice. The food tasted okay. The toppings didn't have a lot of flavor. Also, my nachos didn't get much queso on them. Went for taco Tuesday. Tacos were $3 each! UNHEARD OF in this economy. The staff were so friendly. The restaurant was welcoming, mixing the DC artistic flare with Hispanic tradition. I stopped by for an early lunch for the first time in many years. I had enjoyed orders in the past, but this time was a huge disappointment. When I arrived I was the only customer, and I have to say, they didn't seem pleased to see me. Not hostile, not rude, just not remotely welcoming or warm. Whatever, not a big deal. I ordered what I wanted (a burrito and a side of chips and queso) and got out without any issue. The location, interior and exterior are nice, but I was in a rush to get back to the office, so I took my food to go. I wish I had stayed because I could have done something about my food. The burrito was fine. Edible, but very bland. Even with their hottest salsa it just fell flat, next time I would ask them to go light on the rice, and go extra heavy on spicy flavorful toppings. The real disappointment was the chips and queso though. It isn't cheap, maybe $5 and all you get is a small bag of chips and a small sauce container (~2oz?) of queso. Whatever, it is DC, I knew what I was getting into. The reason I was so disappointed is that it was inedible and went strait in the trash. Chips were a bit stale, but not inedible, it was the queso that was so gross. It was super liquidy, think the consistency of a light soup, and the favor was similarly washed out. If you maybe mixed gas station nacho cheese 50/50 with water, that is what you would get. Maybe I hit them at a bad time, maybe the sauce thickens over the course of the day, but for my $19 I could have had a better meal elsewhere. read more

Honestly, it feels really weird to give a fast casual Mexican place a five star review, but I have to admit, the food at Sol was delicious. Everything tasted very fresh, and so many elements of the food were more authentic than what you would get at a chipotle or another business. The portions were great, and the service was good, too. I got the chicken. If you want steak, it takes a little longer to cook. The chicken was extremely flavorful. The green sauce here is the secret weapon. It's absolutely delicious and it will leave you wanting more. I will absolutely be returning when I'm in the area and hungry. read more

Sol Mexican Grill is your usual Chipotle style restaurant that has Taco's, Burrito's, Quesadilla's, and Bowl's. It's easy to find being a few doors down from the CVS. Interior is small and there is very limited seating upstairs. I went with the bowl option and chose Chorizo as my protein. They have a nice selection of rice, beans, and all the usual items you would include. Four sauces are available and they have cups if you want them on the side. Bowl was good and the sauce was fine. I tried Sol Mexican Grill after a former coworker suggested it. As a disclaimer, I will say prior to my review I am from Los Angeles and I love tacos. I picked up dinner from here on Taco Tuesday ($2.50 per taco). I ordered chicken, chorizo, steak, and carnitas tacos with onions, cilantro, red salsa, and green salsa. Unfortunately, the chorizo was greasy and chicken didn't taste great. The carnitas were not bad. I also ordered the side of rice and beans. I also ordered the mango margarita. The margarita is large but very strong. I couldn't taste the mango as I much as I could taste the tequila and lime. A bit too strong to enjoy with dinner and almost couldn't finish it. I was excited to try Sol for taco Tuesday. You can get any taco with a protein of your choice and two toppings for $2.50. They also have margaritas, which are limited to however many they make each day. Fortunately, I grabbed the last one! The tacos were okay, whereas some aspects were better than others. For instance, I ordered veggie tacos, which come with sautéed peppers and onions. Veggie tacos also include guac for free, like Chipotle, which is awesome. I also really liked the chipotle aioli. However, the flour tortillas were a bit soggy by the time I started eating. Granted, I got caught up, so I don't want to knock them for that. But I would recommend eating them as soon as you pick them up. I also tried a fish taco, which comes with pico de Gallo, cabbage, and chipotle aioli. The fish was soggy like the tortilla, unfortunately. The margaritas were okay. A bit tangy and strong, but something fun. I think they have a couple different flavors. Also grabbed a fountain drink and ate inside, since all the outdoor tables were full. The seating upstairs was quite dirty - they should pay a bit more attention to it up there. I haven't eaten here before and I traveled from Boston to try this place the person who served my food was so rude. 1 the place is supposed to be open until 10 (I got there around 8:15) most of the chairs were put up and they seemed to be closing things early so from the jump it didn't seem welcoming. 2 the server was super rude and came off irritated that we even wanted to order anything Especially the man you had tattoos. I asked for a certain thing but I wanted to substitute one of the items for more veggies in my chimichanga. He literally rolled his eyes at me and said that I would be charged extra and that I couldn't do that. Again, it was my first time nothing was explained to me and I wanted to enjoy a larger portion. Continuing to support local businesses during this time of crisis: ordered a bowl to try out for lunch. The toppings were very similar to what I would get at Chipotle but the bowl tasted so different at the same time. Assuming the seasoning and the ingredients are different, of course. The bowl was flavorful, which I really enjoyed and the portion was good. I actually wanted to try their quesadilla so I'll probably do that next time. I went with Pollo (chicken) and the other good stuff like white rice, pico de gallo, sour cream, corn, cheese, and lettuce. Perfect combination for me. I should've gotten a bit more of spice or salsa like the salsa verde but I didn't want to over do it. I love Sol so it pains me to have to leave a two-star review, but I have had far too many issues with their delivery service to justify anything higher. The food at Sol is outstanding, easily some of the best Mexican food I've had in DC. My issue is that whenever I order delivery, they ALWAYS get the order wrong. Last night, for example, I paid $2 extra for guacamole, and $4 extra for double chicken in my bowl. I also asked for all of the sauces on the side. My bowl arrived with a meager amount of chicken, no guacamole, and the sour cream and chipotle aioli splattered all over the food - not on the side as I had requested. I am curious how and why this keeps happening with them. The people who prepare the food have to read my order since they give me the meat and toppings I ask for. Do they just consciously choose to ignore my add-ons, despite the fact that I'm paying $6 extra for them? I suppose I will have to order from Sol in person from now on so I can watch them as they prepare the bowls to make sure they include my double chicken, guacamole and sauces on the side. This was my first time trying SOL and wanted to explore restaurants in my neighborhood. Something I have not done and I had high hopes for this restaurant. Let me start by saying the customer service was terrible. When I walked in I said this is my first time here and I wanted to look at the menu. I ordered a chimichanga as is on the menu but added beans. The person making my order seemed to have an attitude, did not engage or respond when I was talking to her. I also ordered a kids quesadilla and wanted to add beans. She started speaking and Spanish and someone else stated that I was unable to do that. All in all, she did not want to speak English to me except "what else". I trying asking what do people normally get in their quesadilla since online it looked loaded with beans lettuce and other stuff. So that process of making my food was a mess. When it came to check out. I was trying to ask if sour cream comes with the order since it says it on the menu. The guy act like he didn't understand. I ended up paying for 3 extra sour cream in addition to have two in the bag. Not only that he charged my for the persons food behind me!!!! As I am trying to ask why does a quesadilla and chimichanga cost $35 he acted like he didn't understand and also had an attitude. I just ended up paying and looking at my receipt and saw that it had someone else's order on my receipt. I waited because I had to tell the person behind I had his food. The guy at the register didn't even believe me and ask for my receipt. He didn't say anything but oh I'm sorry. No discount. No taking it off my bill or anything. This was a Tuesday evening October 25th. Food: chicken taste like rotisserie chicken but all in all it was descent but I won't be back. The experience has thrown me off. read more

I knocked off one star for the stale tortilla chips which ruined the experience of eating chips and guacamole. Sol is a good fast casual Mexican option in Mt. Vernon Square. Service is friendly and fast, and while you won't find anything groundbreaking or inventive on the menu, it's a good spot for a standby craving for tacos or burritos. On Tuesday there are $2 tacos - just be aware this does not apply to fish tacos and it does not apply to all toppings (just onions, salsa verde, and cilantro). You can add or upgrade for extra $, of course. I'm ambivalent towards cilantro but they really pile it on, so be aware of that if you are cilantro-averse! I found the chicken to be more tender than the beef. There's a few tables outside for seating on a nice sunny day! read more

On our visit to Washington DC, this place was literally right around the corner from our hotel. We went there three times in our week of vacation. This place can be compared to a Chipotle. Order your choice (burrito, bowl, quesadilla, taco) and whichever protein you want and choose the toppings. Simple, easy, and quick. There isn't much to it. But the portions- my goodness- they were either just perfect, or in the case of the burrito, almost too much! The food was very tasty and there was never a crowd or a wait whenever we went in. But even if there was, their pace was impeccable, so it would be a non-issue. Even on the final visit for breakfast, the young lady had just opened the door and you could tell she was new and nervous- but she was great, and got everything right. The only issue we had was the fact that I can't hear very well and a couple of people there didn't speak the clearest English- but they were patient when I kept asking them to repeat stuff. A few tables were available outside, but we chose the tables upstairs instead. Each meal topped out at around $20-24, no more. That is to be expected in DC. Should we ever go back to visit, we will be sure to stop by here for a meal. read more

Want to make sure people will attend your grand opening? Charge them $2 for a burrito or bowl and watch them flock to your establishment like they've never seen food before in their lives. I arrived at Sol Mexican Grill the day it opened on January 3, 2019. The restaurant was heavily discounting three of their popular menu items (all for $2), so I decided to brave the long (45 minute) wait to see what the hype was about. My overall impression, and yours will likely be too, is that it's a better version of Chipotle (note that one is conveniently located two blocks away). An edge that Sol offers over 'Potle is that they have fish tacos, something every fast casual "Mexican" restaurant should offer. The restaurant also "feels" more authentic than Chipotle. This location is their third and will compete somewhat with Shouk next door, although your meat-loving friends will come to Sol if they don't want whatever sort of bean or soy protein is ground up and put in pitas next door. The variety at Sol is good, and I like that they offer multiple types of greens. They also offer Mexican rice--there is no brown rice as of yet. The prices are on par with Chipotle as well, although I found the flavors came together a bit more at Sol. I got a bowl with chicken and pretty much every topping, and it was a lot of food even though the bowl didn't look super full. I will be back to try out the bowl again as well as the fish taco since they looked delish. If you find yourself in the mood for "Mexican" food and despise Chipotle like I do, Sol is a good alternative that will fill you up for the same price and arguably fresher ingredients. Note that they do take Apple Pay and have a Square card reader, if anyone was wondering. I was disappointed that they only have a standard Coke machine and not something more millennial like Puck soda or a freestyle Coke machine. But they do have Jarritos and Mexican Coke, so that's a plus. read more

We have been getting the family meal kit from Sol multiple times throughout the pandemic and it is always a great deal and delicious. It comes with two proteins (we get chicken and beans), veggies, pico and lettuce, rice, tortillas, guacamole, chips, and sauces - roja, verde, and crema. The guacamole is always really yummy, chicken is well seasoned, tortillas are fresh, rice is soft and fluffy, and I am a huge fan of the crema. It usually comes out to 6 portions - plus we often use the leftover pico/sauces/rice and add our own beans to make an easy extension of the deliciousness. Highly recommended for reliable, cheap, good food. read more
