We went to DC to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month Fiesta DC & Nats Game. We were quite hungry after the game, so we ended up walking a little bit farther from the Stadium to avoid the crowd and ended up in Capitol Hill. We wanted to get Mexican but sit down type of place with homey food after a long day! That's how we found this place! We saw a lot of people eating outside, thought that place must be very popular in Capitol Hill, the inside was a less busy and quieter so we stayed! The decor is very colorful and festive! The bar area had lots of hard liquors from Central America and Mexico. It's a mix of Salvadorean and Mexican food owned by a family, everyone was very attentive and kind, re-filling our water and sodas, as well as bringing chips and salsa every time my partner and I gorged them hahah. The food was nothing too outstanding, since we both had the enchiladas (which to be quite honest, took a lot to be prepared, that's why I'm giving them a 3.5) I ordered the Seafood Enchiladas, which came with red sauce, lots of shrimp and scallops, the rice was surprisingly very flavorful (maybe cooked with some stock or magi cubes) but the refried bean lacked seasoning. Maybe they had a super busy morning and afternoon, by the time dinner time started they had probably short staff in the kitchen. I'm not from the area, so I won't probably get out of my way to eat there, but surely would be my to go spot for local Tex-mex and comida salvadoreña. read more

La Plaza is a vibe. They pack the tables inside and there's a popping sidewalk patio with more tables. It's decorated with bright colors and the staff are friendly. It's a fun spot to get queso and frozen margaritas. We popped in after Santa Rosa was too busy. The menu at La Plaza is large with tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and more. The prices are a bit steep for the quality of food. Everyone in my party thought their dishes were average from the ground beef enchiladas to the veggie fajitas to the nachos. Everything lacked flavor and was just okay. The mango frozen margarita was pricey, but I enjoyed it! I also appreciated the free chips and salsa. read more

I can't count the number of times that I have walked by this place and I've always wondered about it, but never stopped. Well, I recently rectified that and I really liked La Plaza. It's really cute inside and they have some outdoor tables as well. Service was fast and friendly. I enjoyed the chips and salsa. My chimichanga was huge and delicious and while I usually can't eat a whole one, I devoured this one. Everyone else in my party enjoyed their meals, too. Ordered togo on 3/22/25. We ordered pupasas because we wanted to try them in DC. It did take some time for our pupasas to be cooked, but it was busy when we arrived in the afternoon. Pupasas: 3/5, tasted average for my taste. The flavor wasn't there and it is a little bit pricey. Next time we should try it in person. read more

I'm so sad to give this place a bad review because it was SO yummy and so cute, but they poisoned me with a known food allergy that I disclosed ahead of time... and I had a very serious reaction and it ruined my night out. They need to take food allergies more seriously and be more careful...if they do that, it would be an easy 5 stars. What a wonderful place! Great menu ranging from authentic Salvadoran food to more modern Tex-Mex dishes. The food is excellent with good-sized portions (and being from NYC, I know good-sized portions). The staff and the service were terrific. I felt as if I were in a private club, although, to be honest, it was a holiday, and it was very quiet in the restaurant and on the streets. I came recently for a weekday dinner and had a great time! We sat outside, which was very pleasant and I ordered the enchiladas (one beef, one chicken). Both were good, but the beef one was slightly better in my opinion. The portion was generous and the price was pretty reasonable (for DC). Ever since I started coming to DC and the Eastern market area.. we've been going to La Plaza.. told long stories about the neighborhood foundations support of this restaurant and it's hallowed place in the community, and I saw it. We received great service over the years good food and fond memories.. Last night was completely different. The restaurant was a little full at 6:50pm when we walked in, looked like a couple bigger gatherings were there they cleaned off a small table for two people literally right next to the bar. For the next hour and 15 minutes every person who walked by that table bumped me. The servers and the busboy.. each guest.. everyone every time. It made waiting 20 minutes just to get an order in excruciating. We waited so long they brought us another basket of chips. 40 minutes into the whole experience they finally bring us a plate that looked like it had a salad thrown at it and whatever stuck to the plate went out to the table. The span between the salad and the entrees was better but my food came out cold. Tacos A La Brasa is a couple pieces of meat wrapped in a tortilla.. with a side of beans and rice.. I waited almost an hour for a plate so simple it should be almost impossible to serve cold.. but they managed it. My dining partner ordered pork fajitas. Which came out of course sizzling and steaming. Looked good but was a bit tough and chewy. We were seated directly in the middle of the restaurant I could see most of the service and there is something when you see every other table receive a smile and handshakes.. hugs or small moments of community building, and we couldn't get the check to our table to save our lives.. we had to ask for it 3 times.. then had to track down a server to pay the bill. After an hour and twenty minutes and a hundred dollars for dinner, I was completely disappointed. It's overpriced and a shadow of what it used to be. If you go I hope you enjoy yourself, I hope that my experience is unique and that others continue to enjoy the place. That they just had an off night. It's hard to leave critical feedback for such a local business, I hope they can hear it and I Hope they care enough to address these issues. read more

Appreciate La Plaza is open a little later than other places. Additional bonus when opened late and have great tasting food and good service. Not sure if it was due to how late we went in, but it wasn't too busy in the restaurant that is decorated with some cool flair. We were asked for drink orders fairly quickly and beverages and food were provided in a timely manner. To start your meal, highly recommend ordering the papusas. Instead, I was met with attitude and told I should have come back the same day--even though I explained I live far and couldn't return immediately. The staff begrudgingly agreed to remake my order, but took so long that I started questioning whether I even wanted to eat food that was being made with such an attitude. As someone who doesn't like Mexican food, I absolutely loved everything prepared for me from LaPlaza. The salmon was seasoned perfectly, beans were delectable and the rice was soft. The calypso sauce was so delicious, I could've drank it straight out of the container, lol. I drizzled that calypso sauce over the salmon , broccoli & even put my rice and beans in the empty container. Guaranteeing, none of the calypso went to waste. Upon receiving my food, I initially thought it looked mediocre and was hoping it wasn't as bland as it looked. Boy was I proven wrong. I will definitely be eating from LaPlaza again. read more

I've been coming to La Plaza since I moved to DC a few years ago. The restaurant is very convenient to where I live. Just recently ordered for lunch and most of the food I had was extremely bland. I ordered the crispy beef tacos which came with rice and one other entree. Both entrees including the rice were under seasoned or not seasoned at all and didn't taste like much of anything. The best part was the side of guac. Very disappointed because they usually have consistent service if you order from them at least a couple hours before they close for the day. I called to let them know about the taste. Since I do find it to be helpful when others share their experiences, I decided to leave a review as well. I think I'll try a different Mexican restaurant in the area for lunch next time. (But not crossing off La Plaza completely. Will probably go back to only ordering for dinner.) read more

Very fast and friendly service, the staff are all very attentive and came to check on me frequently. The chicken tacos were ok, maybe a little bland but that's on me for not ordering something more traditional or one of the specialties. The margaritas are strong, i ended up buzzed shopping at the Traer Joe's across the street . The salsa is also DELICIOUS, very fresh, with a nice jalapeño kick. La Plaza is a fairly sizable restaurant in South Capital. The location is lovely and they have plenty of seating both indoors and outside.  The menu is extensive, definitely take your time reading through it because there are a lot of great options. I will note that there definitely are vegetarian options, although not a huge amount. The service was also excellent, all of the servers were all very attentive. Unfortunately, I found the food itself lacking considering the prices. Don't get me wrong, everything I tasted was delicious, but if I'm paying upwards of $18 dollars for three tacos, refried beans, and some red rice, I expect a little more. I think the high prices go toward the free tequila shots with lime and salt for the table at the end of the meal, but I don't think that's a trade-off that is worth it by any means, especially if you're planning on driving or have anyone underaged at your table. Additionally, you can only buy margaritas in pitchers, at a price I also found kind of steep for some very standard margs. I would definitely come back in the future but I'm not rushing back. read more

Just got takeout from here on a whim and I'm glad I did! I got both beef and cheese pupusas as an appetizer, and both were delicious and a good size. For the entree I got El Cuscatleco, which has another pupusa, a tamale, fried yucca, and rice. Everything was fantastic, and it's great to get little forkfuls of everything together. Mine also came with plantains, which were outstanding; I thought I made great ones at home, but these were next-level. They have one of the most extensive menus of any restaurant I've seen in DC. If it falls under Mexican food, it's probably on there! This includes vegetarian versions of a lot of their menu items. I got carryout, but spending a couple minutes there it looks like it would be a fun place to dine-in. It's very informal, but the service seems great and it has a family/neighborhood atmosphere. Holy Guacamole! It's huge, delicious, and the "chips" are fried flour tortillas. We could have called it there and settled on a light lunch but decided, instead, to create our own sampler with more appetizers: beef taquitos, pork and cheese pupusas, and sweet corn tamale. The taquitos came in number 1. The beef was savory and not too salty. The pupusas were pretty good but the curtido was a lil too chunky. The sweet corn tamale was soooo good. I had heard legends of the sweet corn tamale in Arizona but have never tried one, till today. It is somewhere in a happy place between side served with dinner and a dessert. The food here was okay. I ordered the Pupusa and a margarita. The pupusa was very good! It had a lot of cheese in it and the slaw was great. The cheese was melted perfectly. However, I felt like their margarita made me feel a tad sick. Maybe it was the tequila. Also, they were so nice and accommodating. This place saved us on our last visit to DC. We got into the city for a quick tour that night and wanted to go get a bite afterwards. The " Fight Club" joint a few doors down were no longer serving food at 9 o'clock even though they advertised that they were open till one. Staff there were a joke. Then we walked a few doors down and found this welcoming place who were more than willing to satisfy our hunger. Food was outstanding and the staff were more than accommodating.
