I don't normally go for Mexican in DC, but gave this spot a try. The food is actually very good. I often judge a place based on their chips and salsa. They passed my test. Our party of two started with Margaritas, with a side of chips, guac and salsa. I order a chicken burrito with pollo asado. Tried some of my friend's yucca and loved those too. Overall, a great meal. This place is very big. They have indoor seating in the front and back, as well as covered outdoor seating. We sat on the patio, but noticed the popular area is towards the back of the restaurant where the restrooms are. Decent service, but not the best for being a slow evening. Came here for Cinco de Mayo and was pleasantly surprised! The food was not bad and the portions were pretty decent. The verde enchiladas were tasty and come with two sides of your choice. I recently went here with a friend for a impromptu weeknight dinner and were seated immediately. We had to order on our phones using a QR code which was not intuitive and we got our food quickly. I got the mole barbacoa enchiladas, although I could not choose my sides contrary to what the menu said. The sauce, rice, and guacamole were all fine; everything else was disappointing. Restaurant double charged me and did nothing to resolve the issue. I split the bill down the middle with my friend, tried to use a card - the kiosk terminal they were using seemed not to work, so I tried another one... went home to find two charges. Mistakes happen, but they did nothing to fix it. Two African American women walk in and ask to be seated outside. They are told there's nothing available. About 15 mins later they ask again and are told there's nothing available .two Latino people walk in within 1 minute and talk to the same people and one leaves the host stand to go look and comes back and tells them she has a table for them. The two Black women are sitting within 15 feet of the door and witness this. They go to the door to talk to complain about this situation and one of the hosts stutters because he has no appropriate explanation. That was my experience today. Won't go back ever. I had been wanting to try Fresca since it's local to me and finally had a chance to stop by last night. It was about 7:30 and the inside part of the restaurant was empty. The outside had a few occupied tables and we had no issues getting sat. By the time we left about an hour later most of the outdoor tables were sat. We ordered chips and salsa and they were average, lots of chips and a small bowl of salsa. For drinks we got the jalapeño & pineapple margarita and I rate that about a 2/5 - overly sweet and not enough tequila. I ordered 2 fish tacos and 1 shrimp taco and rate those a 2/5. The fish and shrimp were tasty but a bit dry. I asked for some hot sauce and got a dish with a green and red sauce, neither was too spicy and I ended up using the salsa from the chips for the tacos. My boyfriend did the same with his chicken quesadilla so I'm assuming his was a bit dry too. Overall the patio is cute, the service is decent (they're probably understaffed), the prices were comparable for the area and the food and drinks were just average. read more

What makes this place cool and unique is definitely their outdoor patio. It's very comfortable, and has lots of nice plants all around. The main dining area definitely didn't seem as nice to sit in. The horchata here is super on point. I really appreciate that it was on the sweeter side. The tacos were good, but I was not a fan of the tortillas. They broke apart pretty easily. Presentation, however, was pretty good. The salsa was also sorta mid - not as spicy or as flavorful as I would want my salsa to be. Overall, this place is good if you're craving Mexican food - it just won't blow your mind. A good place to sit and chill though! read more

I came here for lunch on a warm day and wanted something that would fill me up but not weigh me down to the point I couldn't walk to Capitol Hill. I saw many reviews for the veggie tostadas and got myself one, it was very good! It was smaller than I thought but nevertheless after eating it felt like a good portion size how much it was - $5. I asked the waiter for a vegetarian recommendation because though there are some options, there are also a decent amount of vegetarian choices here too. The waiter recommended the corn tamales which was a pretty big serving size for me; sharing it was perfect. Fresca! When one of thinks of Fresca, they think of a refreshing beverage. My experience at Fresca was nothing less of that. They had live calming music on the outdoor patio. An excellently cooked pupusa and finally, a Mexican Cola to top it off. Fresca will always be a pillar in the H Street Atlas Corridor. I randomly stopped in this spot after my initial destination was closed. It's a smaller location on the inside but the floral covered patio is the bigger attraction. The menu has a variety of traditional Tex mex options: chips and guacamole, empanadas, pupisas, several quesadillas options, enchiladas, and several fajita options with prices ranging from $10-$40. They offer various beverages from teas and milkshakes to sangrias, mezcals, and a large selection of margaritas. I ordered the tacos which can come as a single order or a la carte. I tried the shrimp and chicken tacos, they took awhile to come out but not a excessive wait. Overall decent tacos: the chicken taco was good and the shrimp one was ok but I definitely prefer my shrimp to be served whole instead of chopped into mini pieces. While this wouldn't be my top recommendation the service was great and the tacos get the job done if you need to satisfy your fix and you happen to be in the area. read more

My sister lives in the H-Street Corridor neighborhood and we wanted to try this place after walking by several times. FYI - 3/5 stars is my threshold for a place that's definitely worth going to and I would recommend to anyone! There were some functional issues with my experience. Namely the fact that the restaurant was severely understaffed (or it appeared as so). The server we had was very nice and patient, she just seemed overwhelmed if I'm being frank. The ambiance was not very engaging -- the restaurant has curb appeal and it looks nice as you're sitting in the outdoor patio area, but there's nothing about the vibe that makes me want to return. My opinion about this place was on a downward trend, until the food came -- which was much better than the rest of my rating would suggest! Definitely want to give this place a second chance (but I think it will be for happy hour)! read more

I walked by this place and thought the outdoor dining area was really beautiful with all of the plants. I should have taken the empty seats as a red flag before dining here. Starting with the negatives, I ordered the mushroom chipotle dip thinking it would be a creamy mushroom dip. I had never had something like that and I love mushrooms. When it came out I was so disappointed. It looked like steamed mushrooms in a soupy, oily, red liquid. It kind of tasted like the left over meat juice from cooking mixed with water and hot sauce, poured over some mushrooms. It was pretty foul, I do not recommend getting it. My boyfriend ordered the nachos but he wanted steak on top instead of pulled beef. At first they said it would be an extra $5, but then it was upped to an extra $10 on top of the $18.50 for nachos because it was a whole carne asada on the side. When the nachos came out, they were cold. I feel like nachos are usually slid into the oven before going out to make the cheese melt and the chips toasty, but these tasted like day old nachos out of the fridge. The carne asada came out on the side and it was cold, very tough, and lacking seasoning. On a positive note, I ordered one steak taco and it was decent. The meat was warm and the tortillas didn't crumble as easily as they do at some other restaurants, which I appreciate. The strawberry margarita was delicious! Overall, we would likely never return. While the marg was great, there are a lot places in DC where I can get good drinks AND good food. read more

Fresca is an authentic, family run, affordable Mexican restaurant. There is a quick service counter restaurant in the back and a sit-down restaurant and bar in the back. The kitchen and patio space is shared. The menu can seem a little overwhelming, but everything I have had has been great. The servers in the back restaurant have also been extremely accommodating with my kids. I swear my kid actually ate rice and didn't dump it all on the floor. It's no lie that DC has a shortage of good Mexican restaurants so we welcome any taqueria with open arms (and a little doubt it will be any good). I met my Monday night dinner friend here and we both were pleasantly surprised. Yes, there are quirks for them to work out, but the food was better than expected. I ordered the beef burrito and it was perfectly flavored and the green sauce it came with was amazing. My friend ordered the tostado and he thought it was perfectly crispy with flavorful beef. All the food is on the cheaper side, which is a win in this expensive city. I will say, I was very close to giving this place a three star rating because of the following reasons: The atmosphere was a bit off: The lighting was too bright and none of the tables matched. Seating: There are only a few options for seating and the set up is a little awkward. Amenities: I ordered tap water and they said they didn't have it, but I could buy bottled water for $1. I am pretty sure it's illegal for restaurants to refuse someone tap water.
