I love the empanadas here. I ordered the brisket and steak empanadas. They were delicious and fresh. The sauces were watery though, that was disappointing. I went during the lunch rush so they were very busy. Even with the influx of customers, the cashier was friendly and very pleasant. I will return to try the other options on the menu.

Carne Asada Tacos and Yucca Fries

From other reviews, it looks like this place had to close down during the pandemic and is now back open. But what a fantastic surprise this was! I've been looking for a relatively inexpensive Latin option near the Wharf. I ordered the Carne Asada and Brisket Nachos, 2 Carne Asada Tacos, and Yucca Fries to go. For $13, the nachos, are filling and insanely great value. The brisket was especially savory and delicious. The tacos are seemingly a bit overpriced at $5 per taco, but they really load these things with meat. The carne asada was also delicious. The yucca fries were good but could have used some salsa or mayo to pair (my fault for not asking when I was there). Highly recommend it if you're looking for authentic Latin food at a low price in SW DC! Food: 5/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: It's in the L'Enfant Mall

Custom Arepas; Beef and Chicken ($3.95 each)

One of the food places I ventured while during my Washington DC trip. This place is located inside a food court. The ordering process is pretty simple, you can choose from pre-made Arepas or get it custom order. Topping choices are unlimited. I went ahead and ordered a couple of custom ordered Arepas (chicken and beef). The toppings are fresh and the sauce that it comes in tasted freshly made. Definitely gives you the feel of eating street food. It was a messy eat, but price wise, it was not bad for $3.95 each for some good, quick eats.

Maizal is located conveniently close to work, which makes it a good lunch or dinner option for me. I had recently tried them at an Elite Event, so was thrilled to find their actual location. The pricing is super reasonable. You can make your own arepa or bowl, or chose from pre-made arepas. I prefer to make my own arepa. There are plenty of toppings to choose from, which makes me happy, and the arepa is always super filling. I also love their yuca fries, which are one of the better versions of I've had (as are there arepas), and their tasty empanadas. Their juices are also great, and I'm partial to the maracuya. Definitely happy to be close to Maizal.

I came on a Wednesday during the lunch rush hour looking forward to trying their arepas. When I got to ordering, they said they didn't have any left. What? It's lunch rush hour. I can't reward poor management (or whatever the reason is) with a good Yelp review. With so many other options around me, I wasted my time waiting in their line. I ended up getting some of their Specialty Items which were all not bad: 1) Salchiyuca - fried yuca, fried beef frank, garlic sauce, fancy sauce, pickled onions 2) Columbian Hot Dog - gourmet hot dog bun, all beef frank, pineapple jam, garlic aioli, fancy sauce, melted mozzarella cheese, potato chip crumbs 3) Street Corn - roasted ear of corn, chipotle aioli, queso fresco, cilantro I only recommend coming here if there's no line and you're just not feeling anything else.

La Cerda (pulled pork) and La Caraquena (shredded beef)

Extensive menu and a welcome addition to L'Enfant Plaza. Its point of view is different enough - rice bowls (similar to Roti) and arepas - to add into the lunch rotation. I came a little after 1pm and while there was a line, it moved quickly. Most people opt for the rice bowl, which takes on a Chipotle ordering style of scoop and serve, so it was about a five minute wait before it was my turn to order. I ordered two of their signature arepas, La Caraquena (shredded beef, black beans, plantains, queso fresco, garlic aioli) and La Cerda (pulled pork, pickled onions, guacamole, queso fresco, fried egg, and sour cream). The arepas were prepared quickly. If you're in a time crunch, it's faster to order the rice bowl, but I wasn't waiting for too long. Two arepas amounted to $8.69, and I was pleased with the heft of the container when they handed it to me. La Cerda was disappointing. While the arepa had plenty of the protein, they forgot to include the guacamole and sour cream. It needed more flavor overall. I liked La Caraquena - I would order it again. My favorite place for arepas is still Arepa Zone, but La Caraquena was comparable in terms of flavor. However, La Caraquena was light on the cheese and garlic aioli - they were almost non-existent. I also think Maizal's arepas could benefit from some sauce. As for the arepa itself, these arepas were thin. They did have good texture, but Arepa Zone remains the place to beat. There is still room for improvement, but overall, a solid lunch choice.

This is a great alternative to ROTI but South American style. It's perfect for those days that you're looking to stay under $10 dollars for lunch and still want to be healthy. I love that you can get kale as a salad option and they even have rice, beans, quinoa, and what seems like a smorgasbord of toppings to choose from. Fill your bowl until your tummy desires!! They have arepas too but I have yet to try them!

4-star!! food and service here were excellent. But the main reason for the review is to give some helpful tips. Being a visitor to DC as we were, you may not have heard of Maizal. tip1: For everyone sake, step to the side and review the menu before getting in line. Maizal is similar to Moe's in that you can build your own bowl starting with rice, protein, veggie, then sauce. But if you do not know what they are, you'll be one of those standing there with peeve hungry DC'ers behind you. Do not be one those people :-) tip2: better yet, just review their menu online before getting in line: http://www.maizalstreetfood.com/Maizal-Menu.pdf tip3: to avoid getting food, and sitting down, only to find you forgot your utensil to eat with, they are to the right of the cashier. So as a tourist, I try ordered a rice bowel as a DC'ers : Base: Rice ("what type of rice?", they ask. Me quickly answering, "Cilantro Lime Rice") Protein: Chicken ("what type of chicken?" DC'ers behind me looking up from glazing at their phones. They smell a tourist nearby. I quickly answered, "grilled! I want grilled chicken!" As I check over my shoulder) Toppings: "Everything!" check over my shoulders again. Some return back to their phone glazing, a couple nodes of approval. umh!, one millennial still giving me the once-over. not sure what to think! Sauce: "Spicy." I say. "We have several spicy sauces." And the extreme helpful server proceeded to name all 10 sauces they have. I HAVE BEEN OUTTED! Phones ignore and true DC'ers begin their mumbling fest! LOL, I decided to go with Chipotle Aioli. Having been outed, and to rub it into the millennial that now throwing eye daggers at me, I asked, "how big are your empanadas?" Might as well go for broke as a tourist right? :-) In the end, this tourist enjoyed his rice bowl and chicken empanada!

I really wanted to try Atol de Elote, but it was made with cows milk, which i don't drink. I ended up getting for different pupusas and some yuca fries. I LOVE yuca fries, but i did feel like for the amount I received, it was over priced. There was maybe 2/3C of yuca for $5. I got one garlic, one chicken and cheese, one pork and cheese, and one spinach pupusa. I was getting very full, so I didn't even try the spinach. I ate a portion of each of the other three. The pork and cheese and garlic and cheese were very good, but the chicken was lacking. It was mine there was no cheese inside and no flavor added to the pupusa! My Friends both got chicken taquitos and liked them very much! Usually when I get pupusas, I get the curtido and a special salsa on the side, which I did not get a salsa. I used the salsa I got with my chips and salsa and that worked out! I would probly come back to order to go, but maybe not dine in. We also ordered a variety of grilled meats, including the two large Parrillada meat platters and picanha . The accompanying sides we tried were the fries, cheese rice, fried yucca, and plantains. I really liked the plantains, but the cheese rice was not was I expected. It was more like grits than cheesy rice. The meats were cooked to how we requested it, and of course tastes especially good with the sauces. My favorite cuts were the strip steak, beef rib, and picanha. I didn't really care for the sweet breads, but that is a personal preference. Value wise, the Parrillada platters could easily feed 4 - 5 people, so we had plenty of leftovers. I walked a little back and forth, but.. no. Across the street, I saw another Mexican restaurant on the corner, but it looked closed, or even shut down. Maps told me it should be there. Looking across the street my eyes were drawn to the second floor, and a series of neon lights for a tarot card reader and psychic. Taking this as a sign, I crossed. That's when I found Benito's and realized that it's neon sign was out. Walk too fast and you might miss it. A narrow door aside a bay window lit from inside. It's a small place with a warm, cozy feeling. Benito's is very much a neighborhood Central American restaurant, but FYI: no alcohol. Started with guac and chips, usual fare, delicious but nothing that singled it out. I ordered the Pollo a la Plancha and it was rather good. The chicken was grilled through but not tough, it still had moisture and you could cut it. Rice, greens, etc. and the small 2oz solo of black beans, all standard fare. The corn tortillas were interesting, not your usual thin tortillas, so it took my mind a moment to consider what I was holding. It had the thickness of a pancake, maybe a sope base, and reminded me of thick, handmade tortillas when you don't have the press. Curiously, the tortillas were not the same that my friend got with his Mole Poblano, which were thin. Granted, it was a cold Tuesday evening, but in two hours only two other individuals came in to eat. Seems like they do brisk take away business. I expect on a warmer night with higher foot traffic this place fills up quickly. The service was great, did not want for anything. We were served with two containers of sauce, green and orange. Ostensibly green chili, and habanero, I did not learn specifically however. When I dine in DC I can't help but confront the blunt question: Was it worth it? Yeah, it's good food, good people, and a good place. You'll feel comfortable there and leave full. But the price of dining out is too damn high, and this meal is on the higher side of what, ten years ago, would have been $15. I fear that prices will continue to be pushed higher and places like Benito's might disappear, so get over there because the food excellent, the people are nice, and it's just a warm space to hang out for an hour or so talking to an old friend.

We went in right as they opened, on a Friday at 5 pm, and there was already a line! The reservations were full, but we were offered a seat either at the bar or outside. Luckily it was a beautiful day so we took a seat outside. They started us off with a sweet hibiscus flavored juice as a palate cleanser which was super refreshing. The left side of the menu had appetizers and shareables, while the right side had entrees. We ordered the short rib tacos, pork belly, wagyu empanadas, and seafood enchiladas. Everything had a beautiful bright orange sauce on it and made it look like it would be spicy but it wasn't! I think it's their signature guajillo sauce and it was VERY good, super creamy. Seafood enchiladas: This was my fav. Might have been because it was extremely hungry and it was my first bite. Definitely best when eaten warm, as the cheese is gooiest and the seafood inside is hot. I wasn't sure how the salad was going to be but it added a perfect refreshing and acidity to balance out the creamy sauce. Wagyu empanadas: Much gooey-er and cheesier than expected, but also a hit! Came with a decent amount of beef inside. Comes with the orange sauce and a chimichurri, which I think was a good idea because given how cheesy and creamy the filling already was, the chimichurri was a nice balance as well. Pork belly: Melts as soon as you cut into it. The Asian in me low key wanted a giant bowl of rice with this so that I could soak up all the sauce and veggies. Pretty fatty so if you're not a fan of that you might not like this. Short rib tacos: These were loaded, not with meat but with tons of crunchy topping (maybe fried carrots?) Could have done with slightly less crunch but overall still good. The orange sauce on the bottom had a peanuty flavor which I thought added a unique kick. Also, we were surprised at how quickly the food came out. We were in and out in under an hour. Our server Rebecca was also extremely nice. Will def be back if in the area. Highly recommend all around!

You DO NOT get to choose what items you want from the ayce brunch menu, they bring every single dish out and they do it at a pace that you barely get a chance to enjoy anything. Every dish is loaded with fillers and barely any meat. Every dish has a similar flavor of chilli, lime and cilantro. I say this with the upmost respect to this restaurant, the only good thing about the brunch were the churros and they don't give you that until you're ready to leave. The chicken and waffles were almost good but the sauce on the chicken with the waffle just ruins it. The steak and eggs were ok and you only get a 1oz piece of steak. Birria tacos were just ok and the fish taco was ok. Everything else was not worth it. A lot of items went to waste. If we could've chose exactly what we wanted, it might have been better. This would also add to why the service did not start off well because our server gave us our first drink and left. After that, every item from the brunch menu were just getting dropped off by food runners. It became overwhelming. We didn't even have room on the table for all of that. Then we also had to ask for new plates because we did not want to mix the flavors of every dish. The drinks were also not good, I had margaritas for my drink of choice and they are so sour and filled with cheap tequila... respectfully for 70$ a person you're better off ordering à la carte. The restaurant is beautiful though, great for pictures and the food is colorful as well but the flavors are just not that good and you're ultimately paying for a bunch of food that you don't really even want nor enjoy. I really hope they adjust this because I heard it was 10x better in the past.

What keeps me coming back time and time again are their double-fried tostones. The texture and flavor is absolutely insane, and the sauce it comes with is to die for. I've also tried their Cuban sandwich, which is hot, melty, and scrumptious. The shop itself is bright and modern, and even has a small outdoor patio section. I will definitely be back when I have more shows at The Wharf in DC!

The staff seemed a bit overburdened trying to keep up with orders and get everything out in time. That said, the young man and woman who prepared my order were kind and very focused on doing their best. I definitely plan to return and give them another try under less hectic conditions. This location is an entire vibe. It's tucked down a painted alley that leads you to a side entrance, which I actually preferred over the front. Parking is what it is at the Wharf, but I recommend parking near the museum and walking over. Once inside, you're met with gorgeous decor and a thoughtfully designed space that feels like a Spanish-style bar set in nature. The tile, the color palette, and the food and drink options all come together beautifully. I ordered the Carrot Cake Con Leche, which came out to about $8 after tax. It was tasty and a great treat after my morning run. It did take about 15 to 20 minutes to receive my order, but given how busy it was, that felt understandable. I'm looking forward to returning and experiencing it at a calmer time.
