A sweet diner, not to big, but has a big selection of breakfast, lunch, & dinner. We were greeted by a young man that was polite & knowledgeable. The establishment was Rail Road Theme with a train running the rail all around the ceiling of diner. I thought it was cool even at my age. I had the small chicken fried steak with salad and mashpotatoes. I ate it before I realized "NO PHOTOS" Were Taken. So sorry. But it was very tasty ! The ambiance was peaceful, the establishment was clean and everyone was attentive. The price for 3 people to eat was LOW !! Which pleased us. oh-emm-gee.. this wasn't just bad.. this was like, "we're going to talk about this for years to come"-awful.. my wife's food was unidentifiable as being the dish she ordered, the owner or manager or whatever came over to argue with her about it when she sent it back. Then he told us it was the waitress's fault. My meal was only just terrible, but i could identify kind of what it was supposed to be, and i could clearly recognize the french fries. A couple at another table had chicken and waffles with way undercooked chicken.. Too bad, i wanted to like this place. I live in Cleburne and wanted to try someone new. I usually give everyone the benefit of the doubt but the food just wasn't it. I got the 2 eggs with bacon and a pancake. My husband got the breakfast sandwich. My eggs and bacon were good but the one thing I wanted was a good pancake (on a diet) and I took one bite and it was terrible. The pancake tasted old. When we spotted this cute little restaurant in Cleburne, we had to try it. It's been open since around 1920 and it is a great place to go for breakfast or brunch. They have a regular breakfast menu plus they have some other breakfast specials. I only got a picture of one of our plates but they all were pretty good. Hi Everyone! Today I had breakfast at Chaf In Restaurant I. Downtown Cleburne. Not sure what the name means, but, oh well!! I won't lie, I probably would not have eaten here if it weren't for the yelp reviews and it's a local mom and pop that advertises it has been around for about 100 years.... I'm glad I chose to stop by and give it a try. I had Chicken Fried Steak for breakfast. It came with two eggs, hash browns and two biscuits with gravy. The chicken fried steak was very good. The eggs nicely cooked, hash browns were great (sadly wish I got a little more). The biscuits were fantastic. Light and very tasty!! Gray was so so, which was disappointing. Our server was extremely friendly, gave great recommendations and provided excellent service. The ambience was quaint and a bit weathered. I doubt it was in the same building 100 years ago. But definitely 50! Finally, the prices were very fair for what you got. Yes, there were small things that weren't perfect about my meal. All things considered, including the great prices, I will definitely give my visit five starts. If in downtown Cleburne, it's definitely worth stopping at Chaf In Restaurant for breakfast! Food was just plain bad. It's on the same level of Dennys, so if that is your idea of a good meal, you will love it here. They will ask you how you want your burger cooked and how you want your eggs cooked, but what ends up on the plate will be a surprise. Sorry, but this place could use a major facelift - it's dark and dingy. We went for breakfast on Easter Sunday. I had the Cinnamon French toast stuffed with cream cheese and topped with strawberries & whipped cream. Sounds delicious, right? Not. It wasn't hot, I didn't taste any cinnamon, the cream cheese was just a slab of cream cheese - not creamed, nor whipped, no added flavors. Just cut off the block and placed between the toast. The strawberries were mush, obviously frozen for a while. The best part of the experience was our server. She was very attentive, checked often for coffee / water refills. Food was better than expected. I had steak and eggs. It's supposed to be a New York, but I can't verify that, but it was good and cooked to order. Home fries were greasy. Rye Toast was thick and good. My husband had their Monday chicken pot pie and he enjoyed it. The place is filthy and out front smelled like garbage. We ate here anyway, and weren't disappointed. Well, look no further than Chaf-In. This place is pretty popular, so parking is a bit hard to get once you get there, but once you're inside, you'll be greeted with welcoming, antique-feeling décor, my favorite of which is the model Union Pacific train running along the rafters. You can just take a seat wherever, and someone will be with you rather quickly, usually within a minute or two, to take your drink order and give you their menu. They have a rather large menu with all the diner classics, plus some novelties. Breakfast is served all day, but so is lunch and dinner for that matter. About the prices: I got a 6oz steak, sunny side up eggs, hash browns, and biscuits with gravy for $9.99. Despite that price, there was absolutely no compromise on quality. In fact, it's easily some of the best diner food I've had. It's easy to see why this place has been around for over 100 years. Perhaps it would be wise to drop in to this place before it gets on Guy Fieri's show and they raise the prices. All-in-all: it's a great place with excellent food and a very welcoming environment. I have been going to this restaurant for as long as I can remember. And it's always been good and consistent. I grew up near Cleburne, but moved away. Today, I was in town and we dined here for lunch. I got the chicken fried steak which is legendary with mashed potatoes, pea salad, fried okra. And the lunch special comes with their to die for banana pudding. It was just as good as I remember. And plus, you get corn bread and a roll with the meal. There are fresh butter packets on the table. This is what I would consider a café or a diner. It's old-school, not fancy. You seat yourself and pay at the counter when you leave. My daddy was a railroader so coming here also brings back fond memories of him. Since Cleburne was originally a railroad town, there are a lot of railroad motifs here. read more

This was our first time at the Chaf-In and we loved it! I believe we met the owner today, she was at the checkout stand. She was so sweet, and we got to chat with her for a few minutes. The restaurant had so much personality, the decor gave it an antique vibe. Our son really loved the train that runs on tracks at the top of the room. The food was great. First time her and overall it's was "ok". It's a beautifully quant country atmosphere with a lot of old town railroad history. Complete with a running train around the dining room. Wife liked hearing it go overhead. We were mainly curious about going to the oldest established restaurant in town. 102 years old!!! Wow!! Cool nostalgic moment. Have to go. Had the fired pork chop special and the chicken fried steak special. Wife liked the brown gravy, was a bit on the sweet side for me. The fried steak was, well, thin and about 6 inches round at the most. All other country stops have had CF steaks that covered the entire plate. That's what was expected. Was a little disappointed. The fried pork chop was more fried ham cut across grain. There was not traditional bone and it wasn't even 1/4 inch think. Was WAY thin. Coleslaw was decent. It's a very wet and thick mayonnaise cold slaw, old school, not the modern vinegar tinged coleslaw you get most places. Staff was more than friendly. Owner was cool, from Greece with a very cool accent. I did here one waitress tell us that the food is more on the bland side, due to the older clientele that frequents here. It tasted as such. There weee a good bit of regulators, wait staff and owner talked to several tables like she's known them for a long time. Not just a "how is your day?" , but more "is the wife feeling better?", "how's your grandson doing in baseball?" More personal. Neat place. Small portions for the price compared to other places. So....I'm giving it a 5, because the service was GREAT!!! The girls that were working, were doing an absolutely amazing job. They were hopping back and forth making sure customers were taken care of, had what they needed and making sure drinks were full. Now the food is a 4, my eggs were good but, I ordered over medium, but they weren't exactly over medium, the whites were still runny....I went ahead and ate them, but I would had rather have had them be over medium, whites DONE and yellows runny. The steak....ummmm...it wasn't seasoned at all. I had to use salt and pepper and then I had to use some Heinzs 57, mixed with some pepper, a little ketchup and that still didn't help. So my one suggestion is season the steak as it's cooking. Besides all of that, I would return and I would try other foods. BTW....they have daily specials that apparently change everyday. The service was outstanding. I have food allergies so I am primarily vegan. I usually end up with a salad so I was excited to see some things I can eat on the menu. I ordered the Veggie burger. This was a Black bean patty that was vegan and doesn't have any nuts or mushrooms. I had to ask because of the allergies mushrooms and peanuts would cause a emergency room trip. Chaf In, a Cleburne institution, has fallen on hard times caused by inattention to quality. Their CFS is preformed mystery meat devoid of flavor as were the mashed potatoes (without gravy) and greens, the vegs served lukewarm at best. The guiding principle seems to be serve anything, they'll eat it. I hope someone recommits to quality. read more

Really good burgers, full dinner meals or sometimes I just want eggs, bacon, grits, toast and it will served quickly and hot!
