I have been to Che twice now and both times have completely blown me away. I went for dinner the first time and got a pitcher of sangria, a million empanadas, and a skillet of queso. Everything was incredible. The second time I went was for Sunday brunch. I got a skillet with breakfast potatoes and two empanadas-- smothered in queso. It was everything. The empanadas are the main feature of this restaurant, but everything else is great. You can order individual empanadas or save a little money by ordering in batches. They come out a a cute wooden board and are each stamped with their names/numbers so you know which one is which-- which is so cool! A lot of them are paired with specific sauces, so you get those too. I believe I have tried every flavor and can confidently say there are none that I wouldnt get again. We went with a large group so they seated us in the private area in the basement which was perfect with the size of the group. Great ambience, good staff and good food. Sopa de Zapallo is Spanish for "I want to bury my face in this soup." (It's creamy butternut squash soup). It's also the first thing you should order when you sit down at Ché. At Ché, there's really only a couple things you need to know: 1) Order the Butternut Squash Soup (Sopa de Zapallo), we've been over this already. It's a creamy bowl of savory delightfulness. Sure, you can keep it seasonal and save this one for fall. Or, you can be like me and order this whenever the hell you want, because you're a rebel that don't play by no rules. 2) Order Empanadas (order 1 if you're not too hungry, 2 if you want it to a normal meal (with soup), and 3 if you're drunk and "don't care what no one thinks!"). The short rib empanada is delightful, savory, and warms you on the inside. The crab rangoon empanada is actually just a giant crab rangoon made with real crab. The jalapeño beef empanada (That's the third for those counting along at home. No, I wasn't drunk, I just don't play by no rules) had great jalapeño flavor but wasn't overwhelmingly spicy. This addition to OTR surprised me to be honest. We came in here on a Friday night. This place has cool seating tables in the front, and an open bar out back, also a patio behind for warmer weather. They have a lot of beers on tap, which I appreciated. I had my stout from 50 West and satiated myself. My group of friends and I split two appetizers: Fundido and Melted Provoleta (for a vegetarian friend). No vegan appetizers, boo! The Fundido was pretty good. Skip the Provoleta unless you appreciate the cheese. The highly recommended butternut squash soup was not available. :( We took the 12 empanadas for $48 offer. I had the Pork Belly and Buffalo chicken. I preferred the baked empanadas because it didn't have the overpowering fried crust taste. The pork belly empanada was LEGIT GOOD. Obviously, we were hungier and I had the Chicken Salsa Verde empanada, which was meh. My friends recommended the Jerk Chicken, Caprese, Short Rib and Korean BBQ. I had an amazing dinner at Ché with a friend! I have only had Argentinian food a handful of times, but this was a real treat. There was a cool mix of fusion food (i.e. Korean bbq empanadas) and authentic Argentinian plates, so I would recommend you come with an open mind and an empty stomach. We started with empanadas because that's what they're known for. First off, don't get too set off of the menu because our waiter offered 6 more different options as "specials" that night, so they have so many to choose from! We got the de carne ($4.50) and the jerk chicken ($4.50). The de carne was better, but both were excellent. The crust was super flaky and melt in your mouth. The chimichurri sauce was excellent and the real deal. My biggest complaint is the price and the portion...I didn't realize that you only get one empanada for $4.50. That seems pretty steep to me. I understand these are made by hand, but I sort of assumed you got two per order. For our entrees, I got the Argentine Sausage with brussel sprouts ($18) and my friend got the Grilled Duet with asparagus ($25). The sausage was really good and homemade, but I think I liked the steak and beef skewer better. If I were to go back, I would definitely go for their steak again. By the way, every Argentinian restaurant I've ever been to has always been very meat forward, so it's good to see that they're focusing their menu on steak. I felt that these platters were a better bang for your buck than the empanadas. My only complaint was that everything felt like it had a little too much oil on it. We closed the meal with the tres leches cake. I looove me some tres leches cake, and this one was decadent and very caramely. Service was excellent. I can't remember our server's name, but he was in the front of the restaurant last Monday and he was so friendly and welcoming. Went here to celebrate a late Valentine's Day. We had to wait to be seated which was fine. We went at an odd time but it is a tad small as otr restaurants can be. We went to the bar for some drinks while we waited. Drinks were pricey but I loved my spiced wine. It was a really unique drink and it came out from a crockpot all nice and warm. We waited way less than the gentleman had told us so that is always a huge plus. My only complaint about this place is they were out of about 1/3 of the empanada options and about 4 of the ones they were out of were ones we had been very excited to try (like the crab Rangoon or buffalo chicken one). It was an odd time on a Sunday near the end of the night so that could have been why they were out. Who knows. We plan to go back at a better time, maybe lunch in hopes of trying more of the empanadas. Their fries were a huge surprise. Get them! They were very good. We ate till it hurt here. It was a nice quiet Thursday night on their patio. We tried an assortment of empanadas. None of them knocked my socks off and the chimichurri was okay. The classic argentine dish we got was okay and the potatoes were the best part of the dish. The overall favorite was the queso fundido which wasn't our hopes. Let it be known - "empanadas and fries only after 9" It takes a lot for us to venture out on a weeknight. We not only work long hours, but this week I'm also working through the weekend on a 12 day stretch. But we're new to this city, so when I learned it was restaurant week this week, we thought we'd give it a try and only pick one restaurant to dine at on our least busy day. We scoured the whole list and picked Che. We made a reservation on open table under "experience - restaurant week" for 9pm (again, we work long hours). We rushed over after work, paid for street parking, and then were told we could not get the restaurant week menu during the last hour of opening, and that the open table reservation listing was a mistake. They would only be serving empanadas and fries. I explained our situation, showed them the email I received from open table, asked pretty please it's just after 9 can we order now for the restaurant week menu which we specifically came for? The answer was still no, even from the manager. One star from this review is for the nice and apologetic hostess. One star is for the manager looking out for the kitchen staff. Minus 3 stars for the bad customer experience given all the circumstances and not honoring a reservation that was clearly made for restaurant week. The manager even tried to blame the situation on us for not reading their website and their open table description box. Sorry but when the reservation listing on open table even specifically states it's for the Greater Cincinnati Spring Restaurant Week, I don't question it. We ended up going to a different restaurant in OTR with amazing customer service despite not knowing how frustrated we were when we arrived. I cannot say enough good things about Che's empanadas. I had tasted a few of them at the Taste of OTR and Taste of Cincy so obviously needed more. Came by on a Sunday around 4:30, so they weren't serving the full menu (until 5) but did have the full empanadas selection. Over-the-Rhine (or OTR, as it is now often stylized), was once an enclave for Cincinnati's German immigrants, who likened the city's Miami and Erie canal to the Rhine of their beloved homeland. Today, the neighborhood bustles and buzzes with a variety of living, shopping and, of course, dining options. Ché, an Argentinian restaurant located practically in the center of it all at Walnut & Mercer, adds a uniquely flavorful addition to the mix. We stopped in for an early dinner, skipping the patio due to the 90 degree afternoon heat. The restaurant is cozy and inviting, with a dizzying display of beer tap handles covering nearly every inch of space along the wall above the bar. The actual draught beer selection isn't nearly as vast, but still quite respectable, featuring many local brews, including the ubiquitous Rhinegeist. Our server, Tiffany, was professional, patient and pleasant; quite knowledgeable with both the food and drink menus, and expressed a genuine passion for the cuisine. With her guidance, we chose a variety of empanadas (fried/baked, filled turnovers) for our appetizers. I tried the roasted mushroom, onion, feta and mozzarella fried empanada--absolute savory deliciousness which soon made me wish I'd ordered several more. For our entrees we chose to share a pizza and an order of Argentinian sausage. The pizza was topped with grilled asparagus, prosciutto and arugula, along with mozzarella in a mildly sweet cream sauce, complemented by a cibatta-style crust. The sausage was served with a traditional Chimichurri sauce; an oregano pesto bursting with the type of flavor you only get from using fresh ingredients. Anyway, it was two beef empanadas sitting atop goetta gravy, potatoes, pico, and cheese. It was big enough that I ended up carrying out half of my meal. We also ordered the mimosa pitcher for $20. It was a bit pricey for what we got. It was about enough to fill 3.5 wine glasses. It may have been more cost efficient to order separate mimosas. I love this place! Great spot for weekend brunch- I've been 5-6 times on the weekend, usually between 11 and 1, and never had to wait. So rare in this area, and for such good food. I love the "goodbye hangover" dish- 2 beef empanadas over delicious cubed potatoes, onions, peppers, chorizo and cheese. My bf goes for the steak and eggs with cubes potatoes- the steak is great. He gives the Bloody Mary's high marks as well. We usually get an extra empanada or two, I personally love the ham & cheese. Finally was able to drop by the actual Che restaurant, after seeing a booth for it at many events. We were seated right up front at a table, so it was nice and bright but it's a bit more mood lighting as you move further back in the restaurant. Service was good, we were attended to right away, and she was very helpful with recommendations. Ordered the fundido cheese appetizer with pita, and 2 empanadas (shrimp scampi and de carne). I also ordered some cocktail, cannot remember the name. The fundido was nice, since I was super craving cheese that evening. I was pleasantly surprised by the shrimp scampi empanadas (had no idea how this would be done into a scampi), had great flavor however was lacking in the actual shrimp (only small shrimp inside). If you've read my reviews before, you know I feel about hype- I don't want to believe it! And so was the same with Che. I had a group of friends that visited during restaurant week and they just RAVED. Naturally, I was curious, so when I had the chance to go, I was ready. They kept talking about tomatoes, which is a very strange menu item to be madly excited about. I have to tell you guys, though, that these little colorful cherry tomatoes lived up to the hype. They're marinated in their house made chimichurri and really are the perfect foil to their full flavored roasted/grilled meats, a bold cheese or any of the other items on the meat and cheese starter plate. I will definitely remember to bring my appetite the next time I come. I'll need it. read more
