I'm not sure what has changed at CenturyLink, but we have had a completely different experience than many of those writing 1 star reviews. Their engineering (esp their Fiber Optic group), tech support, field techs and customer service have been exceptional (and continue to be).
Okay, we live out in the sticks in the western, coastal range of Oregon. We get a lot of rain (avg 50+" a yr), it's overcast on any 3 out of 4 days, our property has old growth fir and surrounded by towering trees. Only one mobile phone carrier out here and we are lucky to get 1 bar, in fact we loose service completely at times. We have tried satellite TV & internet, but the reception, speeds and service were so bad, we cancelled them after only a few months. So aside from an occasionally working hotspot on our mobiles, it's been some time since we had any real, reliable and reasonable internet service.
Then, a couple of years ago, along came the Oregon Rural Broadband Initiative. Fiber Optic, being installed by CenturyLink, was going to be laid down along our one and only highway, connecting a large, valley city to the largest coastal city - and we lived only a 1/2 mile from that highway! Our course we live in a 120 year farm house, our county road is still one-way, gravel and used heavily by logging companies. The underground phone land lines were put in sometime in the '70's and we quit using them over 10 years ago, just used it for emergencies. With plans to lay Fiber Optic cable in our area, we were cautiously excited.
Two years, gov't red tape, funding and sub-contractor issues, later, we finally had internet! CenturyLink upgraded all the equipment and lines to handle the new service, they installed new access boxes and phone lines to our house and kept working with us day and night to get it right. We have about a dozen neighbors spread out over a wide area, and all of them were waiting and watching to see how our experience went and if it was going to work at all. Have to tell you, our expectations sank to zero after a while, but hope, like Spring, runs eternal, eh?
So the good stuff: customer service kept us up to date with scheduled dates, changes and cock-ups. True we called them more than they called us, but the fact that they called back when they said they would was surprising. The Fiber Optic group, they were awesome: gave us the straight low-down, kept us informed on the project's over-all progress and made sure our orders were kept up-to-date. Then there were the field techs working on the lines, the new switch boxes, control hubs and our rural electrical co-op engineers who kept us informed as to their progress and in some cases, their exact problems! Once everything was connected and up-and-running, the tech support staff was nothing short of amazing in helping with our minor issues, questions and upgrades. We started with 10mbps (unheard of by us with DSL) and within a week we had 40mbps, just as they said we would have. In another month we should have 100!! We don't need that, but it's good to know it will be an option.
Sounds too good to be true? Well, it was not and is not! For almost a month now everything has been working as advertised, nary a glitch, no outages at 40+mbps download and 3+ upload and in happy streaming land (and better data, mobile service now that we can use wi-fi).
The take-aways from all this are: patience, politeness, persistence and perseverance. We'd give them 5 stars, but we felt that would be a bit over the top as there were a few mis-communications, dropped orders & minor connection issues initially. But every person who worked with us at CenturyLink (some 30 or so folks) were 5 star performers.
Bottom line: we have great service, a great internet at reliable speeds and connection and CenturyLink made it happen all with one, small service charge to us. Cheers! read more
